Wat een debuut. Persoonlijke getuigenis van een stomachtige periode & transformatie. Vlot geschreven waardoor je in 1 ruk doorleest. Mooie taal waardoor duidelijk is dat we nog veel moois kunnen verwachten van Wendy 2.0 . Aanrader !!

This book moved me deeply. It tells a story that feels as turbulent and overwhelming as a divorce itself, the kind of storm you simply have to go through. And yet, what struck me most is how much love runs through every page. Love for a daughter, for friends, for family, and, perhaps most poignantly, for an ex-partner. Despite the grief, this is also a profoundly beautiful and hopeful story about self-discovery. About life, really.
What I found especially powerful is how the love for the ex and the process of grieving are so intricately woven together. They don’t cancel each other out. They coexist, evolving alongside new, meaningful things that unfold in life. In a quiet but significant way, the book gave me permission to revisit my own grief, which had faded into the background amid the busyness of everyday life. It created space to acknowledge that those feelings are still there, and that they are allowed, even necessary. That recognition, alongside the deep sense of relatability, is a remarkable gift to the reader.
There is also something incredibly touching in the author’s vulnerability. How she writes about finding it difficult to open up, yet does exactly that through this book. It makes the story feel honest, raw, and deeply human.
On a linguistic level, the writing is simply beautiful. The author has a gift for imagery and phrasing that lingers long after reading. One line that stayed with me: “Meanwhile I creep up the still unpainted stairs, softly, so as not to wake the years of accumulated grief in the house.” Absolutely beautiful.
The closing chapters are handled with such warmth, especially in relation to the ex-partner. Scenes like those at the Ghent Festivities and the division of belongings feel intimate and humane. I also appreciated the explicit acknowledgment that this is one emotional perspective: “We don’t know what he thinks and feels, because we haven’t lived his emotional journey.” That awareness adds depth and fairness to the narrative.
As the story progresses, there seems to be more space for love again, even as the grief remains present, changed, but not gone. And that balance feels true.
As the author writes: “He will understand. That I had to write this for myself. But that it is also a declaration of love to two people who tried to make a marriage work, and had to find another way to grow old together.”
A deeply moving, tender, and beautifully written book that stays with you. Must read!

Sommige boeken fluisteren hun pijn, andere leggen ze rauw op tafel. Jaar zonder zomer van Wendy Huyghe doet dat laatste. Zonder te schreeuwen.
Wat Huyghe beschrijft is geen verhaal over uit elkaar gaan (alleen), maar over verlies in zijn meest wezenlijke vorm: het wegvallen van wat je levensverhaal tot dan toe heeft gedragen.
Dit boek is rauw en rouw tegelijk. De verwarring, de woede, de liefde, de vermoeidheid, het stille doorademen wanneer de wereld doorgaat terwijl jij stilstaat. Nooit vals. Nooit goedkoop. Geen sentimenteel geschenkpapier.
Wat me diep raakt, is hoe Huyghe ruimte laat voor stilte. Voor de dagen waarop er niets ‘geleerd’ wordt, niets opgelost. Voor het blijven zitten in pijn zonder boodschap of troost te forceren. Dat is zeldzaam. En krachtig moedig.

Een ongelooflijk mooi en vlot geschreven boek.
Je volgt de schrijfster tijdens een moeilijke periode in haar leven. Toch is het allesbehalve een boek met zelfbeklag. Wendy schrijft heel eerlijk over de rauwheid van het verdriet en het proces dat ze doormaakt. Tegelijk is het boek doorspit met humor, liefde en vriendschap. Wat ze schrijft is vaak herkenbaar.
Ik heb gehuild, gelachen en meegeleefd, maar vooral enorm genoten van Wendy haar schrijfstijl.
Het boek leest als een trein en is onmogelijk om neer te leggen.

Jaar zonder zomer neemt je mee door de rollercoaster die een scheiding is: diepe dalen, maar ook pieken die echte turning points vormen in het hele proces.
Op een meeslepende manier beschrijft de auteur de diepste gedachten en gevoelens waarmee je geconfronteerd wordt wanneer de toekomst plots niet meer overeenkomt met wat je hoofd en lichaam verwachtten. De rauwe rouw die daarbij komt kijken, voel je op elke pagina.
Ik heb het boek in één ruk uitgelezen en voelde meteen diepe spijt toen het uit was. En misschien is dat wel het grootste bewijs dat je een fantastisch boek hebt gelezen.

Ik ben naar de boeklezing geweest en dat was een hele fijne ervaring. Daarna ben ik onmiddellijk aan het lezen geslagen en ik kon het niet meer neerleggen. Binnen de 48u was het uit … jammer, want ik had kunnen blijven lezen.
Ik vond het bijzonder pakkend en ook heel mooi geschreven.
Ik ben al benieuwd naar de volgende boeken die eraan komen. (Zeevonk heb ik ook al met plezier gelezen).
