Three roommates attempt to reinvent themselves by moving to a rambling old farmhouse in rural Oregon. When their experiences of their new home begin to disagree with each other, Chris pledges to save the group from whatever is happening to them. But without understanding what's going wrong, can he help them escape in time?
This book ended up being much better than I thought! At first, the narrator, Chris, was so weird and I was pretty sure that I couldn’t deal with her. In an awkward, almost sexual manner, she over-explains her decisions directly to the reader. It’s like she’s scolding me for following her journey and hitting on me at the same time. I was annoyed by Chris in the first half of the book, but her haunted house is so bizarre, that I had to continue reading anyway.
The second half totally changed my mind - I was hooked! The haunted house starts revealing things to Chris and as strange occurrences start making sense, it gets really creepy. I was wide awake, tense in bed in the middle of the night, cringing with disgust and dread as more and more became clear. Chris’s side conversations with the reader made more sense too. Great ending!!
Since this book did a 180 and totally hooked me to the end, I’m giving it 5 stars. A very original haunted house story!
Can I give this 6 stars? This is a terrific, creepy, slow burn novel. I don't want to give anything away so I don't want to say too much. The narrator is Chris, who has moved into this strange house with his two long time friends. Chris is telling his story to "you" and who "you" are is a bit of a mystery. The events happen over a week or so and I'll just say this is top of the line as a keep-you-guessing, what-is-going-on, story. Haunting? Possession? Madness? Imagination? "You" do find out in the end. There are little nuggets here and there, little hints left for you in the narrative, subtle Easter eggs for you to find. It's always such a pleasure to find a rare, unique, imaginative take on the horror genre that does not rely on grotesque and gory violence and mindless torture. This is that book. Read it and then read it again (I did).
It creeps on you, unaware... and then you get the chills and the scares: this is how it feels to read this book. It's just so eerie, almost dreamlike - well, more like a nightmare. Very well written, it's impossible to put it down!!
