Undercover agent Liam Connell stared at his captor. He looked like a pirate from a holovid— black trousers, a white, puffy-sleeved shirt, and a purple sash wrapped jauntily around his waist. Wavy black hair fell to his shoulders and ... Connell couldn’t believe it. He actually had gold hoops hanging from his ears. The pirate ran his forefinger lightly down Connell’s cheek and smiled. “Mmm! Mmmm! What do we have here?”
Just what had Connell gotten himself into? (M/M Romantic Sci-Fi)

After thirty years of working with the unemployed, coping with threats, tears and broken lives (and these were only from fellow staff), LV Lloyd decided it was time to make her escape. And what better place to go than the world of m/m romance? She started writing Dangerous Tension, her first ebook in the Aurigan Space Saga, years ago, but put it aside due to work and family commitments.
In 2012, she dusted off the foolscap pages stored under her bed, finished the story and turned it into a book. Since then, she has written six more ebooks in the Aurigan Space Saga series, and numerous short stories.
Gothic Romance is her first venture into a new genre, Historical Romance.
LV Lloyd lives in Adelaide, Australia, with her family and two cats. In her spare time she enjoys fishing and visiting the many local wineries.

This was amazingly homophobic for a (supposed) MM romance.

Pirate Man:

First, we have Space Pirate Man. He is the predatory gay man stereotype, which is totally fucked up. There’s a throwaway line about how women are totally safe from him, which …neat, but wow sucks for all the men who are getting assaulted (apparently?) instead. I couldn’t quite tell if it was suggested that the captives were pleased with their captivity sex, or if it was just rape. Very unclear. I’m leaning towards sexual assault and rape.

Was he meant to be rapey? Because he sure came off that way, especially all the Bad Touch. The lack of content warnings suggests it was an accident.

Undercover Failure:

For a supposed experienced undercover agent, he was a fucking mess. He frequently jumped to conclusions based on appearances, panicked in the face of gay, was wildly unprepared for everything…just can’t buy it.

He was also aggressively homophobic. Not vocally, but in his reactions and thought patterns he was …big ew. Check out the quote:

”He found Mars himself completely unfathomable. On the one hand his skills as captain were above reproach; the ship was well run, apparently without the bullying or intimidation he had expected. On the other - he simply didn’t understand how one man could be attracted to another, …”

what the actual fuck. what does this even mean. why would a dude being gay or bi affect his ability to captain a ship, or like…you know, do anything? It doesn’t.

I fail to see how a romance will develop between a predatory gay space pirate and a homophobic dipshit failure.

Speaking of weird homophobic random asides: this quote from the second in command Nowak (random POV segment, was useless)

”Although Nowak was not homosexual, as second in command he was used to being Mars’ chief confidant.”

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN

The Writing:

There was a lot of issues with the writing itself, and it frequently made it hard to figure out what was going on. The opening scene - wow, I was so lost. I got that there was an attempt at a clever reversal (who pirate? who not pirate??) but until the end of it I just had no idea what was happening.

There was a lot of head hopping, like two paragraphs in Character 1, then two paragraphs in Character 2, then again for random side character, etc. It was very choppy.

The writing was also …young. Unpolished, frequently over explaining things, and used far too many exclamation points. Things that are easily fixed, but were jarring to read.

Overall: this was extremely homophobic, and left many things to be desired as far as characters and their interactions. I didn’t get far enough to critique the plot, but given how utterly useless Undercover Man was as an undercover agent, I can’t imagine it’ll be anything good.

When the pirate has so much charisma and character that it is impossible not to like him, you know you're reading a great story.
The tension, the suspense, the ending I didn't expect are all great attributes to this story.
I've enjoyed reading all the books in the Aurigan Space series and that they are all stand alone stories, the author has been able to build an amazing world with many wonderful characters and places, with wonderful plots and adventures.
Pirate is a great read.

I'm not sure why this is labeled M/M Romance since it's pretty much a pirate story with a ... bromance?
Super shitty ending to otherwise 'meh' adventures.

Original Blog Post: Review Request: Pirate by L.V. Lloyd

Review by: multitaskingmomma
My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

Pirate is about Nicholas Mars, a wanted pirate of the high space. His reputation is phenomenal: kidnapper, rapist, a space-age Robin Hood. He is just as cunning and his weakness is someone who appears not to like him as a lover. His adventurous spirit is taking the Aurigan Space by storm. When he steals the Patrol Ship, Ebano, he made a huge mistake. He gets the ire of one Captain Rice who swears (like a character of an opera mind you) that the pirate will regret his actions.

Liam Connell is tasked to insinuate his presence into the Pirate Mars' crew, and maybe his bed. This terrifies Liam as he is straighter than straight. But his assignment is clear, he is to become an undercover agent and present Rice with Mars.

When Nick spots Liam, he likes the type but is hyper aware that this man may just be a plant to capture him. This is a complication because he is very attracted to the younger man. His feistiness and independence is a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, Liam is found out, and this is where the real story unfolds.

What follows next is a space adventure involving the running and capture of Nick and Liam. I cannot spoil why they are both being sought, you have to read that yourself. Just know that this is not a story connected to the Aurigan Space Series but this does happen in the same space vicinity. The terms are the same, the world is the same. The story is just one of those offshoots to it.

I have to be honest, it took until the 50% of this read before my interest got piqued. It was ho hum in the first half, but it had to be for there were a whole lot of things going on that had to be established. The second half, now that was the real kicker. It was impossible to drop this after that. I persevered for I follow the Space series and was curious: where is the author taking us with this?

Now, for those who are wondering about the ending? hehehhehehhee oh, what an ending! I cannot reveal anything, but I just want to say: that was AWESOME!!!

Overall, yes, the first half was good, but the second half was spectacular. Four stars rounds it up.

WOW! What a ride.

This is the first book I’ve read by L.V. Lloyd and it certainly won’t be the last. I love finding a book that grabs me right away and I’m unable to put it down until the last page. The story is about a law officer and a space pirate who serendipitously meet. The relationship goes from one of mistrust to something more. The book has so many ups and downs and surprises that I was in tears one moment and smiling the next.

Ms. Lloyd has a seriously kick ass writing style and you can tell she loves to write. Kudos to her for sharing her gift of storytelling with us. I can’t wait to read more of her work.

I enjoyed this book. The ending, Lord, loved it--Nicholas Mars, the pirate, is not above doing what it takes to get what he wants and I found myself rooting for him! Also liked that the author made it easy to follow a space saga.

The sci fi aspects are easy to follow and the universe the author created is well described. The point of view was muddled in places and a bit of head hopping. All that made some scenes jumpy. Oh, and what was with the exclamation points used at odd times? Overall, Pirate had promise.
