Loooove the story. Love the continuation of Kate and Curran. But to be completely honest, the narrator for Conlan was very hard to listen to.

Conlan's POV during the battle is one of the best things I've ever heard. Graphic Audio continues to impress with one of my favorite worlds. If you haven't read the Kate Daniels series, this is your sign!

This was such a fantastic dramatized adaptation of Magic Tides. So glad they got the same voice actors as the main characters, along with some new faces. The voice actor for Keelan hit it out of the park.

I was loving this GA production. The sound production and voice casting was awesome.
Then Conlan had lines. His voice didn't fit...

The story is 5 stars as always. Graphic Audio does excellent editing and sound effects to enhance the story, as always…BUT
The actor that was chosen for Conlan is one of the worst performances I’ve heard in a long time. It really takes away from the rest of the performances.
Minus 2 stars for that. He was THAT bad.

Have You Heard the Good News of Our Consort and Sharrim, Kate Daniels?

It’s a delight to return to Kate Daniels and Co.! Kate, Curran, and their now 8 year old son Conlan have left Atlanta and are trying to establish a quiet, low-profile life in Wilmington. Unfortunately, Kate Daniels is apparently incapable of flying under the radar. Within minutes, she’s intimidating school administrators, beating up gang members, rescuing kidnapped children, fighting vampires and accumulating a small army of devoted followers.

So much for keeping a low profile.

Magic Tides is a fun return to the Kate Daniels world, with plenty of the action, humor, mythology, and gloriously over-the-top Kate badassery that fans of the series will recognize. Kate remains wonderfully hard core and fully unimpressed by anyone who thinks they can intimidate her.

The story also gives us something I particularly enjoyed: multiple POV chapters. Getting Curran’s perspective is always a treat, and we even get a chapter from Conlan’s point of view. Seeing Curran as a father and getting a glimpse inside Conlan’s head adds another dimension to the characters and makes this feel like a genuine continuation of their lives rather than simply another Kate adventure.

The story also does a nice job exploring the moral gray areas surrounding Aaron and his cult. Kate discovers that some of the cult adherents are actually desperate parents. Kate immediately understands their desperation because she has been in that position herself, and that compassion adds some emotional depth to all the sword-swinging and supernatural violence.

There is, however, one significant issue for me: the exposition. There is a LOT of it. Especially during roughly the first 40% of the story, it sometimes feels like the book is trying to cram the accumulated history of ten novels into Kate’s thoughts between every encounter. A major feat in a 5 hour novel! We get information about the Order, the People, magic waves, Kate’s father, the war, various supernatural factions, and more. Much of the information is interesting, and the world-building feels impressively researched, but the sheer volume of it repeatedly pulled me out of the current story and made the pacing feel rushed.

Fortunately, once the story gets moving, there is plenty to enjoy. The action sequences are well choreographed and full of Kate's sarcastic banter, the mythology is fascinating, and the final confrontation gives us everything from god powers and blood magic to magical pigs and Kate reenacting the Labyrinth by shouting, “YOU HAVE NO POWER OVER ME!” before proceeding to kick some serious bad guy butt.

The production is strong, with a large and talented cast. I especially enjoyed the use of actual child actors for Conlan (voiced by Charles Joseph) and the other children. Their voices sounded genuinely young rather than like adults attempting to sound eight years old, which made those characters feel much more natural.

The sound design is also excellent. One small detail that particularly stood out was the footsteps on the deck of the ferry which sounded so natural and distinctive that they immediately made the setting feel real.

The cast brings plenty of personality to the story, and there are several standout performances. Jon Vertullo returns as Hugh—although I have to admit that hearing Hugh sounding more like a jolly uncle who enjoys Kate’s misfortune than the serious, intimidating jerk I remember from earlier in the series was quite a change. I’m curious to see whether we get more explanation for that transformation.

And then there’s my new favorite character, Keelan (voiced by Delton Engel Sorrell), a powerful wolf shifter with a delightful Irish accent who absolutely stole the show for me. He practically worships Kate and Curran, delights in recounting their legendary exploits, desperately wants to serve them, and seems far more interested in swordplay and pranking the People than in shifter politics. His sheer enthusiasm is infectious, and I sincerely hope we see more of this joyful character in future installments.

Overall, Magic Tides is an enjoyable return to an impressively fleshed out world. It has great characters, plenty of action, entertaining new additions, and a satisfying glimpse into Kate, Curran, and Conlan’s new life.

And Kate's attempt to stay under the radar? Yeah. That lasted about five minutes.

Advance listener copy provided in exchange for honest feedback. All opinions are my own. Thank you Graphic Audio for the chance to review this book!

Heather's Notes
I enjoyed this story. Of course there were parts I couldn't hear because of the background noise, but I have come to expect it with the graphic audio books. I usually tried to read the books before I listen to them so I don't feel like I missed something important. I still like the story, and enjoyed experiencing it in a different way.

Basic Plot: In a new city, Kate and Curran are called on to help out a kidnapped kid.

Things I like: More Kate and Curran! New life stage, new problems, new setting. Good fights. Kate and Curran fighting separate parts of the battle, trusting each other to get their job done.

Things I didn't like: the bit narrated by Conlan. I appreciate that GA got a kid to read the kid part, truly, but the kid they used just isn't ready to act a

POW! WOW! Holy Moly, Batman! Enough superlatives? Great production by Graphic Audio of an excellent adventure as all the words of Ilona Andrews in this novel are brought forth in the best kind of audio form. No summary here, simply my admiration and complete enjoyment of Kate Daniels, Curren, Conlon and all the rest of their new Wilmington gang show the bad guys to the door.

I usually love these GraphicAudio versions, but Conlan's voice acting was really unpleasant and marred this one for me.
