藏南晚星 - Evening Stars of Southern Tibet

Rate this book
Xu Nanheng was still a thousand kilometers away from Lhasa.

The longer he drove, the more irritable he became. He got out to smoke, only to find he had no lighter.

Just as the frustration was about to drive him to kick his tire, a man struck a flint, and a flame leapt out, held up to the tip of his cigarette.

Under the evening stars, this was the first face in months that Xu Nanheng found pleasing to look at.

“Are you going to Lhasa?” Fang Shiyou asked. “Could you give me a ride? My car broke down here. Name your price.”

Xu Nanheng narrowed his eyes. “Five hundred.”

Fang Shiyou: “You’re quite a warm-hearted person.”

……Damn. Should’ve asked for more.

this book feels like drinking a cup of warm tea. from beginning to end it was a relaxing experience that was low stakes, but realistic and enjoyable. the book starts off highlighting how different life is in tibet from beijing, and how Xu Nanheng, being raised wealthy, experiences the differences in how people live in Tibet. The way Tibet is described is so beautiful and I felt like I was there at the school with them.

The relationship between Xu Nanheng and Fang Shiyou is so beautiful and pure. I loved watching them interact and slowly begin to understand their feelings for one another, while also learning about how their respective jobs while being in Tibet. It was also beautiful seeing them being accepted by their families.

This book does a lot of interesting things as well, such as highlighting how busy life is as a doctor and as a teacher, and how relationships in real life when your working can be busy and hard, and sometimes you only see eachother every so often; but even so just knowing you can be with that person soon is enough to keep going. I enjoyed being able to see their growth over the years even after leaving Tibet, and getting to see the students grow as well.

One thing I really loved about this book was the ending. Rarely do I feel satisfied with endings especially in Danmei, I feel they tend to be rushed and I wanted more; but honestly? You get everything you need here. Slow burn relationship that’s incredibly healthy and they stay together over the years without their love diminishing, having passion and intimacy for one another, moving in together, marriage, life after marriage, and getting to return to tibet and see the mountain range fang shiyou wanted to show xu nanheng. It really did hit all the boxes of what I wanted in a ending and not in a rushed way

also this was written relatively recently in 2024! and im not exactly sure how the censorship works, but this didnt feel censored at all and is on jjwxc. im hoping this is a positive thing for danmei authors in the future being able to write what they want to write again without being held back.

My main reason for not giving it 5 stars is just because it is very long, especially for a book thats low stakes. I enjoyed my time reading it, but its definitely not a short read by any means (except danmei standards LOL) I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a modern day danemi with a fluffy relationship and NO angst between the couple. definitely felt like a warm hug :3
