Rate this book
When a brutal escape unleashes a deadly fugitive into the Montana wilds, U.S. Marshal Danny Coogan is sent to bring him back, alive or dead. But the hunt turns treacherous when Danny discovers the escapee has entered the Bob Marshall wilderness, an area roughly the size of Delaware. Forced deep into whiteout conditions and uncharted wilderness, Danny must navigate blinding snow, rising danger, and a killer who knows the land as well as he does. Small towns. Big country. Stubborn lawmen. The West may be modern, but its problems are as old as dirt roads and bad decisions.

After thirty-two years of service in the United States Army, I traded the discipline of military life for the craft of storytelling. I studied creative writing at Indiana University, where I began publishing poetry, short fiction, and novellas in literary journals and magazines.

Today I write full-time from Indiana, where my days revolve around strong coffee, enthusiastic dogs, and keeping up with eight energetic grandchildren. My stories are rooted in the landscapes, communities, and characters of rural America.

I am the author of the popular Frontier Series, including Frontier Justice, Frontier Outlaws, Frontier Marshal, Frontier Vengeance, and Frontier Bounty. Blending Western grit with modern crime and mystery, the series has earned strong reader ratings and a growing audience of fans who enjoy the work of Craig Johnson, C. J. Box, and other writers of rural suspense.

The sixth novel, Frontier Ghosts, will be released by the end of 2026, and Frontier Treasure is scheduled for 2027.

If you enjoy stories about determined lawmen, dangerous frontiers, and the fight for justice in the wide-open American West, start with Frontier Justice and join thousands of readers already riding along.

Coogan's Wildest Chase Yet!

Frontier Bounty, book 5 in the Frontier series, brings us back to Danny Coogan as he is drawn into the prisoner transfer that goes horribly wrong. Danny et al are drawn into a true wilderness, motorized vehicles aren't even allowed, despite the conditions and manhunt. This is easily the best book in a great series in a genre I normally avoid. Cardwell's writing style and sardonic humor, plus some of the best characters in crime fiction and a fantastic plot! The entire Frontier series will appeal to a huge cross section of readers, regardless of what they normally read. Overall, 5/5 stars, highly recommended to any adult audience. Try the series, you won't regret it!

Crimes of Endearment presents a narrative that sustains reader engagement across an extended structure, balancing scope with continuity.

What remains most striking is the consistency of its momentum, where the unfolding events maintain attention rather than fragmenting across the length of the work. This allows the narrative to build through accumulation, giving weight to both its developments and its outcomes.

The interplay between tension, progression, and character-driven elements creates a sense of cohesion that supports its scale. It does not rely on isolated moments, but instead develops through sustained narrative movement.

This is a work that engages with the question of how far a story can extend while still maintaining its grip on the reader, and it answers that through a structure that prioritizes continuity and engagement.

What a Series! A must read.

I am at the end of this Coogan Series. I am glad I have a short wait for the next book. I consumed this series in a little over two weeks. Yes, it is that good. I can see the inspiration of current events imprinted in this novel. Sad and frightening. As usual in this series it is filled with high action. It includes Mike, Coogan's bad ass father-in-law. I have loved this character from the beginning. I do question the storyline of Mike being able to accompany Danny in a prisoner transport. BUT what do I know AND this is a fictional story.

Well, the writing got better over this 5-book series. I still had a hard time keeping track of all the players, many with similar names, especially the 2 bad guys at the end of book 5, both names starting with "S" -- why do authors do that? Anyway, I plowed through all 5 stories, lots of male bonding, lots of nostalgia about what a dramatic life it was chasing down the bad guys in Afghanistan, etc. Lots of dead people, lots of gun stuff, and at the end, knives. Oh my.

Best one yet

This was, by far, the best one of the "Frontier" series. Builds to a crescendo and then explodes. Time for the nex5 one.
