Ezra Jiménez has spent years secretly working toward opening a tattoo shop. He never wanted the responsibility (or sacrifice) necessary to run a shabby bowling alley. That was his father’s dream. But when his dad dies and leaves Spare Time to his son—along with an opportunity to host the USBC National Championship—Ezra has no other choice.

Truett Thorne is tired of travel, the expectations, and the pressure his father places on him to be the best professional bowler in the nation. Coming home is supposed to be a chance to finally settle down and rediscover his love for the sport. So he rolls back into Spare Time… and runs straight into Ezra.

Though USBC policies forbid them from being together, a reluctant partnership turns into something neither of them can ignore. As they race to rebuild the alley before the USBC makes its decision, the lines between obligation and desire blur.

If the truth of their relationship comes out, it could cost them everything they’ve worked for.

And maybe each other, too.

Right Up His Alley is a steamy, open-door gay sports romance with grumpy/sunshine, forbidden relationship, and small town meets big fame vibes—perfect for fans of Rachel Reid and M.A. Wardell.

Did I think I would enjoy a book about bowling? No! Did I think I would cry over a book about bowling? Also no! LOL this was so good! We have Ezra who’s managing his dads bowling alley after his dad passed away and Truitt a professional bowler who’s home from a tour and when he visits his old bowling alley he finds out that his mentor when he was a kid has passed and his son is running it now! Their first meeting is prickly lol Ezra really wants to be a tattoo artist but he feels an obligation to his family to take care of the alley
Truitt is trying to escape his real dad so when the committee for the bowling league shows up saying his dad put in an application for them to host the national championships Ezra is shocked and Truitt offers his help to spruce things up! The thing is Truitt if he’s competing in the nationals he can’t be around the alley and he lets Ezra know how special the alley and his dad were to him so he won’t compete! The thing is Truitts dad is very very strict about his bowling his diet so he won’t take this very well but he wants to help Ezra! Their connection started off prickly but their friendship and relationship heats up quickly with them flirting non stop!
I liked their emotional connection they were able to talk to each other about their fears and what they want out of life!
This has some angst too! Especially when Ezra has to use his tattoo savings to help out with the mortgage! Truitt has to try and balance helping Ezra and listening to his dad about his bowling career! This has spice emotion everything and saving each other and choosing each other and their own futures!

The idea of impressing the USBC representatives and helping change the trajectory of this bowling alley, similar to how Mr. Jiménez helped me, hits me as soon as the suits come closer. All the positive memories I’ve ever had in this bowling alley flood my head in less time than it takes for me to shout, “Ezra, you’ve got some guests!”

I think it might benefit you to make a little more spare time for Spare Time, if you catch my drift?”

Like Ezra said, it has the chance to be something bigger. I’ve had chances like this my whole life. Why shouldn’t Spare Time get one now? Why not Ezra?

“Here you go, Hercules. Put this on.”“So, if I’m Hercules, does that make you Hades?” “You want me to be your uncle?” “If you’re into that kinda thing,” he says.

“You ready, True?” I nod, a little caught off guard by the sudden use of a nickname, and even more by how much I actually like it.

“Seems to me you’re jealous of my size.” “Jealous?” he snorts. “I’m the size of a normal person. I’m not jealous.” “Well, nothing about me is average, True.” I smirk. “Everything about me is big.”

“You got this, Ezzie,” he says, his voice quieter now. “My dad called me Ezzie when he started teaching me how to bowl,” I blurt. “No one else has called me that since he died. It took me off guard.”

“For once in your life, Ezzie, I need you to do what is not expected of you. Live a little.”

Subject: It’s Truett Hi, Ezra! It’s Truett, but you probably know that from the subject. I’m emailing you, but you also probably figured that out as well. You’re so smart.

Holy Meg Ryan. I’ve got mail. I click on the icon and see it’s from Jimenez@SpareTime.com.

I hate myself for feeling this way. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve had hope for something. Allowing myself to be fucking happy.

getting to know Ezra’s family, eating the kind of food people actually fight over, and the easy way everyone folds me into conversations like I’ve always been here. It’s strange, though. I keep waiting to get something wrong—be told to mind my own business, say the wrong thing, or forget I don’t belong here. No one in my life has ever passed plates around like this, bumping shoulders, debating over who makes the better sauce like it’s a joke instead of a one-up or a less-than-humble brag. It’s always been about perfection, business, and competition with the Thornes.

“Shh, baby. I want to make you 😱 , but you need to be quiet for me.” Realization dawns, and an adorable flush colors his cheek. He nods once, telling me he understands. “Good boy,”

It doesn’t matter what number is written across the check Tía Lucia holds. What matters is that Ezra’s family—both his mom’s side and his dad’s—came together for Spare Time.

“Sorry to burden you with it all. I just wish my dad would be there to cheer me on, you know? I feel like I’d do better with a little bit of encouragement. Who wouldn’t, right?”

And then I see Ezra. What the… There he is. Standing slightly apart from the crowd, shifting his weight from foot to foot like he’s not sure he belongs

“I can’t believe you’re here.” I’m breathless as I drop my hands to my side, realizing just how risky it is to be so affectionate with him at this moment. Representatives from the USBC could literally be watching us right now. “What made you drive all this way?”

“You’ve done so much for me, True. I wanted to be there when you needed me too. I know we’ve discussed you not competing for the good of Spare Time, but this is your life. You should be able to compete when you want. On your terms. When you told me yesterday about competing, I saw something in you. You wanted to be here. I don’t want to be the person who holds you back from doing something you want to do

“That guy… the one you were flinging around like a rag doll a little bit ago…” He pauses as if carefully considering his next words. “Is he going to be a distraction come time for the USBC Championship?” I hesitate at first, but then a flicker of mischief warms my face. “Maybe.”

seeing Truett in his element—all those years of dedicated practice—truly was remarkable to see. My True isn’t just good. He’s a fucking star.

“You’ve been showing up for me in a lot of ways, Tru. I wanted to be here for you. Though, I can’t say I did it for entirely noble reasons,” I admit.

“I wanted to see my… you,”“Your what? What were you going to say, Ezra?”“I selfishly wanted to come here and see my boyfriend play. “Boyfriend?” He says the word like he’s appreciating a fine wine, then licks his lips. “Boyfriend.” “Hmm.” I frown. “That’s it? That’s all you have to say?” Disappointment colors my features. “For someone who has something to say about everything, you are certainly quiet about this. If you don’t want that, then just tell me. I’m not a—” “Ezra,” he cuts me off, eyes shining with mirth. “What?” I snap. “You’re an idiot.” And then he kisses me again.

“I’ve been your boyfriend for a while now, Ezzie. I’m glad you are finally caught up to date.” He chuckles, stunning me. I don’t get to ask him exactly what he means though, because he speaks again. “Seeing you at my match today is the first time I have had anyone there supporting me.” “Your parents—” “It’s not the support I needed,” he cuts in. “My father lives vicariously through me. I’m little more than an investment to him.”

“So, unfortunately, Ezra, no one’s really ever been there for me in the way I needed.” His gaze settles on me. “But you were. You are.” A gentle thump stirs in my chest. “And because of that, I’m winning—and for the first time, it actually feels good. I feel more alive than I have in a long time.” His mouth curves. “And I’m ready to celebrate my win properly.”

“You sure you want a bowling pin?” he asks. “I mean, you’re already a professional bowler. Do you really need a reminder of that?” I glance down at it, then back at him. “I don’t see it as a nod to being a pro,” I say. “It’s more like… honoring Spare Time. That’s where I figured out I love the sport. Where it all started for me. So yeah, I’m sure.”

“Please tell me you didn’t—” His voice cracks. There are tears in his eyes, which he furiously tries to blink away. “Tell me you didn’t use the tattoo money you’ve been saving for years to cover the delinquent payments.”

“I know you’re pushing me away, Ezra,” he says, making me stiffen. “And you know what? Fine. I’ll go. If that’s what you want, I’ll go. But know this. You are so much more than this alley. I’ll never know why you limit yourself, and maybe I’m not supposed to. But I hope one day—” his voice breaks, and my instinct is to comfort him. But I can’t. Not when I’m the one hurting him. “But I hope one day you realize you are allowed to walk a different path than the one people expect of you. And I truly hope you will. You’ll be a great tattoo artist. I just wish I could be part of that.”

Goodbye, Ezra. I love the man you made me.

“What are you even talking about, Truett? Bowling is your life. You can’t just not compete. What is wrong with you lately?” He pauses. “I swear, ever since that walking tattoo of a man, you’ve been so damn distracted. Don’t think I didn’t see that new addition to your wrist, either. Thank god the USBC doesn’t have any rules about tattoos showing.”

“Shut up.” My voice is low, a hollow lump tightening in my chest. “Excuse me?” My volume rises. “I said, shut up.” “Truett, I know you aren’t—” “Shut the fuck up,” I shout, flying out of my chair. My anger can’t be contained, and I need to move. “You don’t get to speak about Ezra that way. If you can’t speak about him respectfully, then do not speak about him at all.”

“This is your father’s doing,” she says once she’s close enough to pull me into a hug. “I know he’s watching over us. I know he’d be proud of you, son.”

“If you want me to leave, I will,” he says quietly, voice gentle. “But I couldn’t stay away without saying this.” He steps forward and holds out the large bouquet of balloons, their strings trembling slightly in his hand. They have a weight tied to them, so when he lets them go, they stay in place. “I’m so happy for you, Ezra. You worked so hard for this, despite it not being your dream. You earned it. Congratulations.”

“You have to start thinking about yourself. And I’m going to make sure you do.”

“We’re really doing this, True,” I say softly. “You, me… our own place. Our own lives. Everything we dreamed about.” He grins, brushing his thumb across my cheek. “Yeah, babe. This is just the beginning.”

The has all the components for a sweet, lighthearted love story. Ezra is in a rut, he’s been left running his family’s run down bowling alley after his father’s death. He’d rather be anywhere else, but particularly dreams of becoming a tattoo apprentice and eventually setting up his own shop. Truett is a professional bowler who has fallen out of love with the sport, is struggling with the pressure his father puts on him and is looking for something else in his life. They decide to work together to get the alley ready for the USBC championship which will bring in some much needed money for Ezra.

I was expecting lots of cute renovation moments, connections building over late nights of hard work and an eventual, inevitable magnetic pull to each other. Instead it was almost instant physical attraction, lots of boring worry about the USBC regulations (which I’m sorry but I just could not take seriously) and some rather clunky sex scenes. Ezra and Truett are both very likeable throughout but they read a lot younger than their actual ages with how bad they are at dealing with their emotions and how they let themselves be dominated by parental expectations.

Mostly the writing style in this just really didn’t work for me, it’s highly repetitive at times and it needed at least one more round of editing to fix this and lots of little plot points where it just didn’t make sense. I really felt the complete lack of any decently fleshed out side characters who could have added a lot more depth to this story, almost the only female characters in this are their mothers.

Thank you to the authors and Flying Pig PR for the arc.

Okay, I did NOT expect this book to have so much to offer! A bowling romance was definitely a new one for me, but oh my God, it was actually so interesting!

More than just the romance, I really loved how this book explored what it means to carry the burden of your family, live up to the expectations they have for you, and eventually learn to chase your own dreams and be happy with the choices you make for yourself. Both Ezra and Truett had spent so much of their lives trying to live up to what their families expected from them, and I really loved watching them finally realize that they were allowed to choose their own paths.

The story follows Ezra and Truett. Ezra owns the bowling alley his father left behind, even though running the business was never really his dream. He actually wants to become a tattoo artist, but he feels like his parents expect him to continue what his father started, so he keeps putting his own dreams aside because he doesn't want to disappoint them.

Then there's Truett, a professional bowler who has spent most of his life being controlled by his father. He used to love bowling, but after years of being pushed and told what he should do, he eventually stopped enjoying it. So he takes a break and returns to the town where he grew up.

That's where he meets Ezra when he finds himself back at the bowling alley that used to mean so much to him. It was the place where he spent so much time growing up and where he first fell in love with bowling. Ezra's father was also one of the people who supported him back then, which made their connection even more meaningful.

The chemistry between Ezra and Truett was there from the start, but it never felt forced. Everything just flowed so naturally. When Ezra gets the chance to have his bowling alley chosen as a USBC venue, he decides to fix the place up with Truett's help, and I really loved watching them grow closer while working on the alley together.

And I loved how they slowly helped each other let go of the burdens they had been carrying for their parents. They both had spent so much time putting their own happiness aside, and it was so satisfying to see them finally stand up for themselves, choose their own paths, and actually chase the things they wanted.

And their relationship?? SO WHOLESOME. 🥹 The love between Ezra and Truett felt so genuine, and even though there wasn't a ton of spice, there were SO many butterflies. THE FLIRTING. Oh my God. These men know how to flirt!

I also loved their moms! They were both so supportive of their sons and their choices, and it was honestly so nice to see parents who wanted their kids to be happy rather than forcing them into a life they didn't choose.

I really didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It was sweet, wholesome, romantic, and surprisingly meaningful. I loved watching Ezra and Truett find the courage to stand up for themselves, follow their passions, and finally choose the lives they actually wanted. Honestly, this was such a lovely surprise. 🥹

Okay, I did NOT expect professional bowling to give me this much romance, tension and butterflies, but here we are. 😂❤️

There was just something about these two together that worked SO well. Their chemistry was obvious from the beginning but what I really loved was watching that attraction turn into something deeper. There’s a wonderful push and pull between them, especially with everything standing in the way of them actually being together.

The forbidden romance element added SO much tension. Knowing that their relationship could potentially have serious consequences made every stolen moment feel more intense.

Ezra really pulled at my heartstrings. There’s so much tied up in the bowling alley and what it represents to him, and I loved seeing how much he cared about preserving something that meant so much to his family. He’s strong, determined and stubborn when he needs to be, but there’s also a vulnerability underneath it all that made me want to wrap him up and protect him.
Then there is Truett, the professional athlete returning home, the confidence, the reputation, the complicated feelings… I loved getting to see the man underneath the public image, particularly when it came to Ezra. Their relationship gave him the opportunity to be vulnerable in a way he couldn't always be elsewhere, and those quieter moments between them were some of my favourites.

And can we talk about the fact that the authors managed to make bowling sexy?!
This book had me giggling away😅
Highly recommend!!

This book was AMAZING period full stop.

First, I have to commend the setting itself - bowling. Among all the sports romances out there, this felt refreshing (is bowling even a sport?!).
The anguish of doing what is expected of you and abandoning your dreams for it is so viscerally portrayed in the book that it left me speechless. The weight of the obligations both, internal and external, for the MMCs is palpable. Both Truett and Ezra are dealing with this throughout the story in their own way eventually overcoming their anxieties to become stronger together. The juxtaposition of their struggles and their disposition, sunshine for Truett and grumpy for Ezra is delicious. Their love felt hard-earned.

Also, fully sobbed during the last 30% of the book. Obviously, I read this in a single sitting.

READ IT. It's worth it.

This is a beautifully charming story about bowling, love and expectation. Another book I quickly devoured, finishing in just over 24 hours. It's a great read with two appealing leads, they may not be perfect, but they are wonderful characters who you can't help but cheer for.
Ezra has inherited his father's bowling alley, and runs it, even though all he wants to do is be a tattoo artist. Truett is a bowling champion who returns to the lane he discovers his love of bowling. His own passion is waning and his former champ father is pushing him too hard. With the expectation of their families wishes the men struggle, while gravitating to each other.
First bowling romance book read and I am into it, was the perfect background. These are two wonderful lead characters, Truett with his puppy dog energy and his resistance to stand up to his father, and Ezra, the grumpy loner afraid to be honest about his true desires.
This was very enjoyable!

I was an arc reader.

I absolutely loved the story between Truett and Ezra.  They were both dealing with the same issues of finding themselves instead of being who they want to be.  Ezra being in a career that he was forced into and dying slowing inside. Truett being in a career he was following that he no longer loved, just trying to make his father happy.
There is a third act breakup with Ezra just feels like there is no way to get out of what he believe his family wants him to do.
Truett ends up finding want he wants to do with his life and tells his father he was done being a pro.  By doing that he was able to help Ezra face his fears and end up doing a career he loves.

Overall it was a great story and you couldn't help but love both of the characters.  And Ezra having a praise kink is just an added bonus.

4.5 ⭐️ This book made me laugh, kick my feet, cry, and swoon like all great romcoms should! Ezra and Truett both have so much on their shoulders and the pressure from their family has them putting others before their own personal dreams. Ezra is honoring his late father’s memory by continuing to run the family bowling alley even though tattooing is his real passion. Truett has been on the road for years as a professional bowler, but he longs to put roots down and find something that will make him happy again. Ezra is closed off and all sharp edges while Truett is sunshine personified. The banter is hilarious and romantic. I could not put this book down! Thank you to the authors for the ARC!

This was a super sweet story about 2 men living under the weight of their father’s legacies and being afraid to hope for something more.

I adored these 2! Neither thought they could get out from under their circumstances until they saw in the other a future that made it seem possible. Truett’s mother was just hilarious “Oh sweetie, every body m*sturbates.” had me cackling! I also wished for more emails between the Ezra and Truett because they were so adorably flirty and charming.

I had a feeling that Truett was going to end up running the place happily and I’m glad I was right. And Ezra getting his dream apprenticeship was the icing on a perfect ending to the story.

Truly a lovely love story, with a little angst but mostly sweetness and thoroughly enjoyed it

Right Up His Alley has everything you could want in a queer sports romance - incredible banter, tons of tension, and two MCs that hook you from the first chapters. Dean and James create a wonderful world of depth with Ezra and Truett who will have you laughing out loud right before you start to cry over how vulnerable these two allow themselves to be. There were so many moments that had me kicking my feet under the covers - let’s just say, *Dallas* - IYKYK - and I didn’t want this love story to end. One of my favorite aspects of this book is the family dynamics on both sides and how those are present in realistic and complicated ways that ground the story. Right Up His Alley is a must read!
