ARC Review!
This book was an emotional rollercoaster!!! I managed to read this in a day becuase it was so addictive.
The male main character Ben Evers is swore off women due to one too many heartbreaks, until he meets Jolie Carmichael, the female main character. Jolie loves love and yearns for it, until she has a bad experience and is also avoiding it at all costs like Ben. This contrast of the main characters feeling the same way worked really well and made a very interesting plot.
Jolie and Ben meet as Jolie aspires to be a journalist and so badly wants to make it at the school paper. She finally lands a job, which involved the Nolan U basketball team and had to be good to run in the paper. However, she offends one of the players Darian who tells the boys to avoid Jolie but… Ben ignores this and gives her a chance and agrees to an interview.
Throughout this interview Jolie confides in Ben and asks him for help which leads to an arrangement which was such a crazy twist and something I wasn’t expecting!!!! This book is such an entertaining read, because the concept is so unique, and it also has the drama and suspense to keep you engaged for a long period of time.
I specifically loved the way Katy Archer was able to intertwine previous characters from other Nolan U series. For example, Caroline and Casey from book 3 of the Nolan U Hockey series “The Game Changer”. They both play a massive role in this novel, specifically Caroline who is Jolie’s cousin. This really added depth to the novel as it delved right into Jolie’s past as well as Caroline’s to explain their relationship. Caroline also has a history with another certain someone….if you know you know!!!!
This book was such an amazing read and I recommend it to everyone who loves college sports romance!!! If you don’t know Katy Archer’s books get to know🫶🏻

Ben, meanwhile, has sworn off relationships after having his heart broken not once, but twice. The last thing he's looking for is romance. But what starts as a simple interview soon turns into a genuine connection that neither of them expected.
These two were perfect together. Ben's patience, kindness, and understanding balanced Jolie's quirky, slightly ditzy personality beautifully. She's lovable, relatable, and easy to root for. I think we've all had moments where we've felt just as unsure and awkward as Jolie, which made her character feel very real.

Wow this book was a roller coaster. Ben and Jolie go through it in this book but I love it so much. Ben is so sweet and understanding with Jolie and makes her confident in all aspects of her life. Jolie fights for him like no FMC ever had and it was amazing.

I’ve been waiting for Ben’s book, and it was so worth the wait.
Ben deserved someone who truly loved him. After everything he’d been through, I was so happy to finally see him get his happily ever after.
I don’t normally read basketball romances, but at this point I’ll read anything Katy Archer writes. I love the hockey series, the football series, and how everything in the Nolan U world connects. Seeing familiar characters again while getting to know the basketball team made me love this book even more.

His Reckless Freshman

This book kicks off with having us us following basketball player Ben Evers, who we first met in book 3 The Game Changer from Nolan U Hockey series as Caroline Mason’s ONS. And Jolie Carmichael younger cousin of Caroline, all told through the telling of their dual POVs.
After witnessing the multiple heartbreaks Ben endured and suffered through, it was nice to see him finally find his one and have the HEA he very much deserved.
Although no surprise it wasn’t all smooth sailing, when he made himself the obstacle in his own journey by not even trying, instead having chosen to given up altogether.
Yet given his previous heartbreak that caused him heartache it was to be expected, something author Katy showcased within his internal thoughts in his POV chapters throughout the story.
It was interesting to learn about Jolie and her journey throughout, especially since there was much to unpack not only with getting to know her. As well as following her along in this new path she was travelling within college given her innocence and naivety.
Something we learn more as it connected to the life she lived before moving to Nolan U.
It made for quite a whirlwind ride given the ups, downs, and highs and lows she faced and endured, alongside the emotional aspect that came from it.
Despite being different in their lifestyle led and family life.
Ben and Jolie ended up being what the other needed, which we learn about and see throughout their journeys individually and the one that eventually had them trekking upon together.
The subject matters brought to surface gave the characters as well as the narrative a sense of realism and genuineness, since it was very much relatable to the times of now still.
Author Katy did a good job in making sure to explore yet handle well with care given the sensitivity of the matters presented.
It needs to be said, Caroline annoyed me in Nolan U Hockey series and even now still couldn’t stand her.
The audacity from her was unbelievable, regardless of whether she had the right intentions, she had no right or need to butt into a situation that had jack all to do with her.
Even more so when it came to her motives behind it.
Once again she proved how truly selfish and thoughtless she was and could be. And for that it had me hating her even more than before.
For being the first full length book to kick off Nolan U Basketball series, His Reckless Freshman came through in being a good read. Paving the way for a filling narrative that not only revolved around Ben and Jolie, but also giving peeks into the secondary characters from the found family relationship established.

If you enjoy college romance as well as sports romance, this book is definitely for you.
I have genuinely been anticipating Ben’s story for quite some time, and I’m so happy he finally has one. This novel offers nearly everything you could want in a story: tender moments, some spice, deep emotions, and just the right amount of tension to keep you captivated from start to finish.
Ben Evers has sworn off women after experiencing too many heartbreaks—until he crosses paths with Jolie Carmichael. Jolie lands a position with the school paper that involves covering the Nolan University basketball team. She unintentionally offends one of the players, Darian, who warns the other guys to stay away from her. However, Ben disregards this and decides to give Jolie a chance by agreeing to an interview.
During the interview, Jolie opens up to Ben and asks for his help, leading to an arrangement that was such an unexpected and wild twist—I honestly didn’t see it coming. Throughout the entire book, Ben remains incredibly kind and understanding about everything Jolie has endured. He makes her feel truly seen and helps her build confidence in herself.

His Reckless Freshman is a college basketball romance with a sheltered freshman and tutoring lessons. This is Ben and Jolie’s story filled with unexpected feelings and unexpected truths. I am so excited to read Ben’s HEA, he has been through a lot and him finally giving up on girls to protect himself. In comes quirky innocent Jolie, which happens to be Caroline’s cousin, a journalist student wanting to write about the team comes in to change his world. I love how they met and how respected Ben was to Jolie. I also love how they slowly built a friendship that led to more when the “lessons” started happening. I also love that we get to see the other characters from previous books cause of the connection they have and Ben’s past. Their story gets more interesting when unexpected truths come out and Jolie wants justice for it, while Ben wants to keep her safe and protected her. I really enjoyed her story and can’t wait to read more!

The ending of this was great but the characters took quirky straight to cringe. I really thought I wasn’t going to make it though but the scenes in the constant ads that I was getting made it seem a lot better.
The plot was good and very straightforward, the characters were just so hard to like. I really enjoyed Ben in Caroline’s book, I think it was Jolie that made him less likable.. or maybe just getting his POV? It’s cute for sure but doesn’t leave me waiting on the edge of my seat for the next book.

ARC Review of His Reckless Freshman Book 1 in the Nolan U Basketball Series by Katy Archer. This is a 5 star read for me. I have read the Nolan U hockey and football series and am so excited for this basketball series. I love Nolan U so much and this was an amazing start to the series. I absolutely loved this book, I couldn’t put it down. I have been dying for Ben to get his HEA since first seeing him in The Game Changer in the Nolan U Hockey Series. I love Ben he is such a good guy. He is so sweet and kind, he is a hopeless romantic but keeps getting his heart broken. I love that he finally finds the one who loves him back and gets the HEA he deserves. This is Ben and Jolie's story. Jolie has been pretty sheltered her whole life so being away at college for the first time is a bit of a culture shock. She was raised in a very religious household and is innocently naïve. I love Jolie and how adorably awkward she is at times. She’s trying to find her way and discover herself. This is a slow burn, low angst, spicy, athlete x nerd, lessons in the bedroom, family drama, found family, college basketball romance. Ben is 21 and a junior at Nolan U. He is on the basketball team and studying to become a lawyer. Ben is a hopeless romantic but after his heart is broken one to many times he has sworn off love and dating. Jolie is almost 19 and a freshman at Nolan U and wants to be a journalist. She recently joined the school paper and is tasked with writing about Nolan U’s basketball team, it’s her audition article and if it’s good the editor will publish it in the school paper. Jolie interviews Ben for her article. Jolie is curious about sex but had a terrible first time. Jolie feels comfortable with Ben he’s kind and patient and has a positive healthy attitude toward sex so she works up the courage to ask him if he can tutor her in sex and help her explore what she likes and doesn’t. Ben is torn he said no girls this year but he doesn’t want Jolie getting hurt by asking the wrong guy instead so he agrees. As the lessons continue and they spend more time together both Ben and Jolie are starting to fall for each other but Ben is so worried about getting his heart broken again and falling fast and hard without it being reciprocated that he is scared to give what they have a real chance. I love watching Jolie and Ben together. I love watching how their relationship evolves from spicy lessons to more and how they navigate their relationship when secrets that can threaten to pull them apart come to light. Jolie and Ben are more similar than they realize they have a lot in common and they both just want a love match. I love their HEA. I definitely recommend this book and can’t wait for Book 2

Jolie is such a sweet character. She can definitely talk before she thinks and that lands her in some hot water with the basketball team. Thankfully not all the players avoid her and this is how she meets Ben. What starts off as an interview quickly becomes something more. As they have both sworn off relationships, they think they are safe. The more time she spends with Ben the harder it becomes for her to remember why she doesn’t want a relationship. I couldn’t get enough of these two and was on the edge of my seat for someone to finally admit what we could all see happening.
Katy writes with passion and heart; filling her stories with light heartedness, but also emotional depth and layers. Bringing in characters from her previous books adds something special to her books that long time fans of hers will enjoy. Meeting these characters from past stories definitely made me want to read their story next. I am beyond glad that I finally made time to read Katy’s books and am full heartedly looking forward to diving more into the Nolan U universe she has created.

As always, the characters in this book are realistic and so well narrated that it was sooo easy to get caught up in their lives. The appearance of characters from previous Nolan U books made this an even more enjoyable read. I adored Jolie; she is a very naive, newly minted freshman who had a very sheltered upbringing, and tends to speak before she can consider the impact that her words, or questions, will have on the recipient. I will admit that she gave me a few chuckles. I think she and Ben are perfect together, he is so kind and patient with her and I loved the way he could show her how to temper her, sometimes, over the top actions and reactions. This is a steamy college sports romance with some unexpected, and possibly triggering, twists and turn in the plot that ends with a happily ever after. Whether a reader is a fan of sports romance or not, I highly recommend this fantastic book to anyone.

It feels so good to be back at Nolan U with a new series and a new team and I can tell this series is just going to keep getting better.
What an emotional rollercoaster this was. This was so addicting I could not put this down!!
With many ups and downs, Ben and Jolie are really put through the wringer in this one, but guys, it's so worth it.
Jolie has come from a strict, sheltered upbringing. She's in a new place, out of her depth and overwhelmed with starting College and trying to join the school paper. Truly the perfect match for Ben, seeing them grow their relationship was beautiful; no matter how hard he tried, Ben could not put Jolie out of his mind.

We got the first hint of Ben and Jolie’s romance in The Off-Limits Play. I was so curious how these two got together, and their story was so sweet.
We first met Ben in The Game Changer, and it broke my heart how hurt he was in that story. He is such a sweetheart, and knowing what happened to him in The Game Changer and Jolie’s connection to those characters, I knew it was going to get messy. I was rooting for him to find his HEA.

And then Jolie showed up.
Sir lasted approximately four business minutes.
This man has been collecting heartbreak across the Nolan U universe like Pokémon cards, so I have been WAITING for somebody to finally choose him. And Jolie? Sweet, sheltered, zero-filter Jolie casually asks him for lessons, and Ben somehow convinces himself they can do this with no feelings involved.
BENJAMIN. You are a hopeless romantic with a history of falling first and falling HARD. Be serious.
I absolutely ate these two up. The chemistry, the slow burn, the found family, Jolie accidentally saying whatever enters her brain, and Ben trying desperately to pretend he isn’t already halfway to planning their retirement together—it was perfection.
Then the plot decided being cute wasn’t enough and casually tossed in some “EXCUSE ME, WHAT?!” drama that had me ready to personally enroll at Nolan U and handle a few things.
Ben FINALLY got his HEA, basketball boys have officially entered the Nolan U chaos, and I am emotionally invested in every single one of them now.

This one is so close to four stars it’s not even funny.
I enjoyed this book. So much. The only reason it didn’t get 4 or more is because I feel like maybe the underlying plot twist could have used a little more foreshadowing.
But I still will recommend this book to anyone who loves a college sports romance. Just like all of the other Nolan U series!
Jolie is quirky and adorable and honestly pretty relatable. Ben is kind and sweet, even if he has a tendency to fall hard and fast. The “tutoring” was an interesting aspect. Not gonna lie, it was kinda hot.
And can we all agree that the bad guy in this one is a pile of 💩 ? Ugh. What a skeezy slime ball. I hated him from the get and knew he would end up being bad news. (Which is a punny statement considering he was the editor of the paper)
But the way Ben came to her rescue, The found family, the love respect and devotion? All perfection!
This is a need to read for anyone who enjoys an emotional connection with lots of cute fluff!!

I’ve had a soft spot for Ben ever since he got his heart stomped in The Game Changer, so I was really excited for his book. Thankfully, it did not disappoint. He deserved someone sweet who would love him as much as he loved her, and Jolie was the perfect person to deliver.

Loved being back at Nolan U and seeing some familiar faces pop up!! His Reckless Freshman was the first full book in Katy’s Nolan U Basketball series and can be read as a stand-alone. It was super sweet and had all the emotions!!
Ben had a bad couple of “relationships” and decided to be done with dating. Basketball was going to be his top priority, until he met Jolie. He wasn’t really looking forward to sitting down with her but once she started talking, he was hooked. He couldn’t seem to say no to her, even when it was just supposed to be temporary.

I love getting to know Ben better. We had some insights to him in other books and in meet the boys but it was different being inside his head and seeing things from his side.
I felt so sad with him for a good portion of his story and I wanted to root for him so hard! I kept screaming at the book like heyyyyyy she’s right there! Haha.
I really loved Jolie for him. She was so quirky and fun. She loves to word vomit and it was hilarious at times. Esp when she got the first interview and really let some secrets out. So so cute. Really lifted the spirits and at times could be annoying but to me she was endearing. I really loved the bond they made together in friendship and how it progressed. A great start
Welcome back to Nolan U where we FINALLY get Ben and Jolie's story! Once I started this I couldn't put it down and finished reading in a few hours. Ben has been burned by women and is determined to stay away from them. Then comes sweet innocent Jolie who had a bad experience with a man and comes up with a plan to get more experience with Ben. Things happen and they start to get feelings for each other. Add in some basketball (but IMO not much was mentioned just enough) and drama and you have an AMAZING story. Before you read the latest installment of Nolan U, I highly suggest starting with Hockey House V-Cards, which is the very first book that Katy Archer wrote, and it starts you on the whole Nolan U experience. You can definitely follow this book without having read all of the other ones. But….she is so sneaky good about adding fun cameos from previous characters that it makes the reading experience even more fun when you know them all.
Okay, on to the review….

Unexpected is the word I would use to describe this book. I have read all of her Nolan U books, and in this one, she went in a direction that took me completely by surprise. I was reading and thinking, “Wait…what is happening? Get out of there!!” (I was thinking this more than once too)
The flow and at times the vibe of her story were very different than the football and hockey series as well.
I love being surprised when reading but especially by auto-read authors.
Okay, now…the review…
So imagine, Season 1, Episode 18 of Friends. The gang is getting ready to play poker, and Ross Gellar boldly proclaims that when he plays cards, he is “not a nice guy.”
Keep that scene in mind as you pick up Katy Archer’s newest release.
This is Ben and Jolie's story.
Ben/Benny Boy is simply tired of getting his heart broken. He has gone all in with too many women only to be destroyed. He’s decided that “nice guys finish last.” So….his junior year, he has sworn off women. I get it Ben; heartbreak sucks for sure, but dude….you do not have it in you to be a bad guy. You were raised by THREE sisters (who I wish I could have met in this book) who would not let you get away with that even if you could act that way. It’s hilarious watching him trying to accomplish this bad-boy persona. His inner thoughts juxtaposed with the telling of the scene were some of the best parts of this book (for Jolie’s character too).
Enter Jolie, a very naïve, sheltered girl who is just trying to become a reporter for the school paper, and due to her talking-before-thinking trait, she inadvertently insults one of the basketball players who then cuts off her access to any other players. Of course, then she approaches Ben, whose guilt over his attempts to be mean, makes him want to help her to atone. While helping with the interview, he discovers Jolie needs and wants help with ‘other things.’

As always, Katie Archer excels with found family; this time with a group of basketball players who have been underperforming at Nolan U. If you enjoy the sports aspect, there is plenty of basketball as well.

After Ben got his heart broken not once, but twice, he decided to make a rule for himself, no-girls; focusing in school and basketball 🏀. However, he didn't expect to come across Jolie, a shy, introvert, reserved, innocent girl who wants to interview him about the basketball team so she can publish it on a school article. When he gave in and decided to give her a chance, he started to take interest in her and the line begins to blur. Jolie who's actually Caroline's cousin who unbeknownst to ben, they started to develop feelings. The dynamic starts to shift as they spend more time together. But not everything is always sunshine and rainbow when Caroline finds out about Ben and Jolie. Not only do they have to deal with Caroline because Ben and Caroline had a history in the past but something more dangerous is lurking around and they will need to be prepare to fight against it.

I'm so excited for more Nolan U books and this lived up to the hype for me. I do wish we got more on page interactions with the Basketball Base crew and see their close friendships develop into a found family. I also wish we got to see Ben's sisters or got to read the full scene of Ben meeting Jolie's family.
Other than those things I absolutely love this book and I'm SO SO SO SO SO SO excited for Jimmy's book and I'm so relieved that his love story is next because I can barely wait for the November release date as it is!

Everything Katy Archer writes is top teir and 'His Reckless Freshman' wasn't any different.🙌🏽 I read the entire book in a 24 hour period because I couldn't put it down, I had to know what was going to happen next!
Ben Is total protective hottie vibes that would do anything for Jolie. Jolie is the sheltered freshman that is ready to open her wings. Their love story was so adorable and had everything you could want in a story.

I loved the story of Ben and Jolie. They started out as Nolan newspaper reporter and interviewee for a basketball story, then turned friends to lovers after Jolie had a bad experience.
Jolie is a whirlwind of curiosity with the best of intentions. Ben is patient with her tendencies, but tries to keep her at arms length in an attempt to not get too close.
As they navigate their feelings and past hurts, they find themselves falling for each other despite trying not too.

I received this as an ARC. I’m normally against family members dating the same person, but since I find Jolie adorable and I feel so bad for Ben (and I was never a fan of Caroline), I’m looking past it for this book. Watching them fall in love was one of my favorite stories yet. Jolie had him wrapped around his finger since the beginning, and he never even realized it. These two have definitely made it into my top 5 boys and girls for Katy’s characters.

Arc Review: OMG! I am already so in love with this series. I am very (im)patiently awaiting the next book. I already loved Ben, but this just made me love him more. Jolie was great, kinda silly/nerdy, and just lovable. I know that we still have quite a few couples to go but these two were amazing together and they are my #1 couple (at the moment).
