Bogie & Bacall: Love Lessons from a Legendary Romance

Rate this book
“He adored me. I’d never had it before, and I’ll never have it again. I was lucky to have it at all.” --LAUREN BACALL
Ever since nineteen-year-old Lauren Bacall seductively taught Humphrey Bogart how to whistle in the most famous scene from 1941’s To Have and Have Not, fans have been fascinated by the palpable heat between these two movie legends. Their onscreen passion blossomed into a full-blown off-screen love affair, and culminated in a blissful marriage that lasted twelve years, until Bogart’s untimely death in 1957. Bogie & Bacall celebrates their love, with rare photos of the couple, along with tips and anecdotes that will inspire you to ignite your own legendary romance.

What a sweet little (very little) book. Just 6" high, and a picture every other page -- but it left me wishing for the romantic days of old Hollywood.

Gorgeous pictures of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and little blurbs next to each picture telling the story of their legendary romance. Maybe it was a little sugar-coated (okay, maybe a lot...), but it was nice to drift into a world where everyone was rich, beautiful, famous and deliriously in love.

Okay, it was probably almost a fiction book, but still the half-hour it took to read it and gawk at the lovely pictures was escapism at its best.

I admit it, I'm not the target audience for this book. I don't believe in "shipping" couples (which is basically what this is), nor do I believe that any couple can really identify the secret to their happiness. Every relationship comes with challenges, even the "legendary romance" between Bogie and his baby, but there's little doubt that they loved each other deeply and passionately. True love was the secret to the success of their marriage, and a true love connection is not something you can strive for. You have it, or you don't. So the whole basis of this book is a little childish, in my view, basically saying if you do it like Bogie and Bacall you'll have a happy relationship too, and moreover, the "secrets" are really basic. Spend a lot of alone time together, hang out with good friends, cherish each other, give each other gifts, learn from each other. Pretty much just common sense. There's virtually no biographical info on either one of them, and even though it's just a little book with very little text, it somehow manages to be repetitive. The pictures are alright, nothing you haven't seen before as a Bogie/Bacall fan, and the small format of the book doesn't really do them justice. It's more a tribute than a book, and as such there's something endearing about it, but I think you're better off just watching these two legends on the screen or even just google pictures of them.

This book takes a look at the life of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall through photographs and captions. That's the short version.

The longer version is that the photos are really cool. It's a glimpse into the life of these two Hollywood actors. The captions? Corny at best. The captions do allow a better view into the lives of the couple, but it bears saying that the captions are at times corny, cliche, sappy, and even speculative. Hmmm...just give me the facts and the pretty pictures, please.

Cute little books. I was thinking it would be slightly more biographical, but it was just basic knowledge.
