Reset: How to get paid and love what you do

Rate this book
What if you could wake up every morning and get paid to be you; paid to simply be who you are and anything else is icing on the cake?

This would be a low-risk, high-reward way to live...and it's within your reach.

RESET is the road map to get you there. It's a fresh look at answering the question “what should I do with my life?” and the most straight-forward game plan for figuring out how to do your best work and get paid to be you.

What is a reset? It's an opportunity to change your current trajectory and do more of what you love, whether that means leaving your current job or doing what you do best right where you are. The key to a reset is self-knowledge -- you have to know who you are, which comes down to three essential elements: your values, talents, and ideal environments.

Once you've become clear about who you are, this self-knowledge becomes a lens through which you can explore options to identify the ones that are most likely to pay you for being yourself.

After reading this book, you’ll be able to:
Recognize the myths that might be halting your progress
Learn a new way to find your best-fit career
Identify the three foundations of any fulfilling career
Define success and plan for how to achieve it
Fight fear and take the first steps toward getting paid to do what you love!
Reset was developed from hundreds of coaching conversations over a six-year period with the intent of giving people a structure and plan for taking control of their career and doing more of what they love.

You’ll feel a renewed sense of energy for your career and maximize your greatest asset—you!

Reset: How to get paid and love what you do is a culmination of the many years Dustin Peterson has spent career coaching himself and many others. He asserts that one can develop a career that is fulfilling and meaningful. In other words, you can have your dream job. In about 200 pages, Peterson helps readers figure out what they want to do (and why) and make a game-plan for reaching the goal.

In addition to humorous anecdotes and detailed explanation of key concepts, Peterson includes guided reflection questions to help the reader develop a unique personal profile. By answering the questions, the reader will be able to clearly articulate his or her values, strengths, and ideal work environment. Following this profile development is an in-depth look at how to explore the landscape of work through the lens that the reader has created for himself or herself.

Personally, I have found this book to be enormously helpful. It provides structure and actionable steps that make the process of crafting a career seem manageable instead of overwhelming. It resonates deeply with my personal belief that work doesn’t have to be drudgery.

I heartily recommend this book for anyone who is determined to work his or her way into a fulfilling career. This book provides excellent guidance. Not only that, but it allows you to really get to know yourself and articulate what you’re looking for and what you can offer. Imagine the difference that can make in an interview setting!

Exceptional book! I have recently been attempting to discover what the next step in life for me is, and it’s been a struggle. As I read this book, however, I had so many “aha” moments with nearly every page, and my next venture is crystal-clear. I am of the opinion that this book should be required reading from middle school to the college level. I believe that if the principles taught within this book were followed, then most of society would be living more fulfilled lives and we’d all benefit. Thanks, Dustin!

Dustin Peterson takes the adage "Do what you love and the money will follow" and codifies it. But this is not some stuffy "How To" book; Dustin has a witty and engaging writing style. And this is not a New-Agey feel-good book that fluffs and flatters you for being progressive; this is not a book that advocates withdrawal into the false security of an "empowered self." No, "Reset" is a concrete plan of action to help you identify your unique gifts and to improve them. With these improved gifts you will provide your customers (and the world) with a valuable service. And the money will follow.

But how does one identify her or his unique gifts? How do you know, how do you really know, what you in fact "meant" to do? Dustin helps you discover this; it begins with identifying what you "love" to do. But discovering what you love is not as easy as you might think. And Dustin helps you navigate that rough terrain. But what if you hate your present job? How to you go from that job to one where you're doing what you love? Dustin shows you.

But what if you're already doing what you love? This was my situation. But it didn't matter. Dustin's book has helped me (a) better identify what I love to do, and (b) therefore figure out how to do more of it. (Full disclosure: I am related to Dustin; but even if we weren't related, and even if I found him to be an obnoxious and socially noxious character, which I don't, I would still find this book to be very valuable.)

So, naturally, Dustin killed it. This is a great book to use to step back from the hubbub of daily monotony and mindless chatter. Equal parts insightful and witty, Reset offers a theoretical-practical lens to examine your life, hopefully moving you closer toward—as our friends Socrates would have it—a life worth living.

Highly recommend to any college student regardless of year or major; but equally highly recommend to my mid-20s/early 30s friends who find themselves in a vocational rut.
