Tales of Quoram #1

The Quoram Effect

Rate this book
"Living with regret can tear the soul apart."

Everyone craves a life on the heavenly planet of Quoram. With its healing oceans and fresh, rejuvenating air, it’s a tranquillity the Gods created for a select few. But there’s a catch. The only way to live there is to find your Damson—your soulmate.

Remi rejected her Damson nine years ago, and her decision is carving the word “regret” across her heart. Now, the mischievous deity of the world she turned her back on is harassing her, and the only way to appease him is to confess her feelings to the man she refused. The man she now calls her boss—Torz Benoit.

As Delta Ring Commander, Torz holds a position of power within a fascist society he despises. But when he is forced to comply with a tyrannous governor’s demands, Torz is left gambling not only with his life, but with those he strives to protect. As the threats escalate and options deplete, Remi realises she could lose the man she adores. But in the attempt to save him, what will Remi sacrifice? Her heart, her mind, or her soul.

Huge lover of fantasy, sci-fi and all things romance.

I’ve been writing novels since I was sixteen, however, it’s taken me a long time (25 years in fact) to find the courage to publish. But life is too short!

I began my author life writing historical romances, but over the years I’ve swayed towards sci-fi and fantasy mixed with romance. I think you’ll find I’m a desperate romantic at heart. (Shhh, don’t tell my husband).

The Quoram Effect is a gem of a sci-fi romance novella. I’ve seen very few authors take fated mates to space, but Wilson does it beautifully, in a gripping and engaging setting with a timely plot. Having just watched Andor, I can recommend this to anyone who wants the same political themes of Andor, but with a heavy dose of romantasy’s beloved fated-mates romance trope. The settings are detailed and immersive, the lore of the Damson bond is intriguing, and our characters are three-dimensional with plenty of trauma to sort through, not to mention their rejected bond. I particularly appreciated how Wilson depicted Remi’s struggle with addiction, and Torz’s constant, caring support. The ending is a bit rushed, and it somewhat diminished the gritty dark side of politics that had slowly unfolded throughout the novella, but it remains an enjoyable, quick (two-hour!) read. I look forward to seeing where Remi and Torz go next!

I liked the concept of the Damson (soulmate) bonds, and seeing Remi try to come to terms with the rejection from years before, and how that bond is currently shifting and giving them an unexpected second chance.
Together Torz and Remi have to navigate assassination attempts, blackmail, immoral political plans, and meddling Gods, all centred around the need to fuel the Quoram's energy.
It's an intriguing world of sci-fi and magic, has plenty of action and intrigue, and a compelling romantic conflict.
This packs in a lot for a shorter book, and I enjoyed the surprising ending and the layers of vulnerability and yearning.

I was very excited when the Author gave me an ARC.

I first met Torz and Remi in Plan Q (from Other Worlds: A Sci-Fi Anthology) and immediately became captivated by their story.

The Quoram Effect did not disappoint. Remi and Torz are Damson, aka this world’s version of soulmates. This story takes place 9 years after they rejected the bond. With politicians and rebel scheming, they must decided who to trust. Remi has to decide what she’s willing to pay in order to save those she loves.

I could not put this book down. Any spare moment I had I would read. I loved getting their backstory and learning about the world. I didn’t expect the ending whatsoever and I’m left reeling. I can’t wait to learn more about the world and our crew in the next book!

A captivating and interesting take on rejected fated soulmates. The author managed to skillfully create a fascinating world and meaningful characters in such a short book.

Just like in the 'When Eden Falls' series, the author nailed writing angst and pining. The characters have to navigate their complex feelings regarding their rejected bond, all while trying to maintain professionalism and their friendship with each other. Besides the romance, there are heavier plot points such as drug addiction and a growing rebellion.

The worldbuilding was detailed yet easy to follow, which I appreciated. Sometimes sci-fi can have too much info-dumping, but the author's writing style was easy to follow and I was engaged from the first page. I was unsure as to how the conflict would be resolved, but it wrapped up with a satisfying conclusion. I'm excited for the next book in the same universe!

I genuinely didn’t know I liked sci‑fi romance until Alana Faye Wilson came along and said, “Here, sweetheart, hold this intergalactic love story.” And suddenly I’m clutching the book like it’s a cosmic heirloom and whispering oh no… I care about space feelings now.

Her writing is warm, witty, and sprinkled with that signature Wilson magic, the kind that makes you giggle, swoon, and question your entire genre identity. And just when you think you’re safe, just when you think you’ve figured out where the story is going… BAM. The ending hits you with a plot twist so sneaky you make an involuntary noise. Mine was something like aaaaaaah you sneaky little star‑witch!!

I closed the book feeling loved, betrayed, and converted. Sci‑fi romance? Apparently I’m obsessed now.

Another great book from Alana Faye Wilson.
Her writing style is easy to read and her descriptions make you want to be there.

This is a story of two people possibly fated to be together but life and misunderstandings get in the way
We have intrigue, a smattering of politics and a good old story of will they won’t they.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes sci-fi, a bit of romance and a few surprises along the way.

I was given an ARC to read but my views and enjoyment are my own.

Romantasci...Who Knew!

**May contain spoilers**

I am a lover of all things AFW! I love everything she releases, and this is no exception! My only wish was that it was longer, but what a treat it was! I love the premise of the story. The way fated lovers work, the friendship/love between the main characters is a little change up from normal. The friendships are fun too. The blend of sci fi, romance, and fantasy is a nice change. I really hope to see more!

This sci-fi, romance book is a quick, easy, and entertaining read that is pretty fast paced. I really liked the characters, the MMC is a military commander (?) and the FMC is part of his team, but honestly has a history of being kind of a hot mess. They are fated mates who refused their soul bond almost a decade ago and believe they have lost their chance at a better future (embracing a soul bond means they can get the heck out of dodge). Some of the tropes include: He falls first, touch her and die, green flag MMC. There is drama, emotional turmoil, action and political intrigue all wrapped up in 200-odd pages. There is some world building but nothing overly complex as it is reasonably short, but I never felt that this affected the story in any way.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this story, I received an advanced copy of this book. I am leaving a review voluntarily.

Loved this book. Alana has a way of making me love sci-fi everytime i read one of her books.
The interaction between the characters drew me into this story and was hoping that they both realised they needed to rekindle their bond.
Loved Remi and how her character was flawed and haunted with regret. But she would still do her job even if her boss is the one man who was her Damson.
I found it hard to put down and was disappointed when I read the last page, as I so didn't want my journey in this world to end.
I hope there will be more in this universe with or without Remi and Torz.

Nine years ago, Remi rejected her Damson, a soulmate that would allow her to leave the space above and reside on the planet, Quoram. And, every year after has reminded her of the choice, especially when she became his Lieutenant and friend. Despite rejection, Torz Benoit has a home in Remi’s heart, one a pesky god pokes at every night in her dreams. Now, as regret and grief weigh on her heart, she is forced to watch Torz make impossible choices that challenge his morals and his ability to protect the people he loves. What price is Remi willing to pay to keep him safe?

Alana Faye Wilson’s “The Quoram Effect” is a novella that packs a punch. With brilliant world-building and engaging political intrigue, this story sinks its claws into you. I finished the story in a single sitting, racing towards answers and resolution. Sci-fi has always been an interesting genre, but to combine it with this soulmate trope with a bit of yearning for second-chance romance??? I was enthralled. I wanted answers for their relationship as eagerly as I wanted answers for the problems placing Torz. And I was not putting the book down until I had some answers.

This novella is a great introduction to sci-fi for those that lean into fantasy. Easy to approach and overall fascinating, any reader would be drawn into Quoram’s orbit and eager to see what happens next by the end. And, despite being a lighter read (length-wise) there is no end to the depth of the characters met and the possibilities of the world presented. I’m excited I got a chance to read this story and I am excited to return to it in the next book!!

If you want to start RomantaSci because you're sick of the same Romantasy stories on repeat, but you're also not ready to fully commit to a full 300+ page SciFi Romance novel--- THIS is the book to start!

The Quoram Effect was a fun and something a little different. I enjoyed the mix of Dystopian x SciFi Romance, especially the complicated relationship between Remi and Torz.
Finish it off with the added elements of fate, political danger and a repressive society...

*chef's kiss*

It's a nice easy read that doesn’t feel too overwhelming or drawn out, and it made for a good few hours of reading.

• Second Chance Romance
• Rejected Soulmates (no backsies)
• Commander MMC
• Meddling Gods
• Friends to Lovers
• Workplace Romance
• Regret+++
• SciFi Romantasy
• Rebellion

I will also note that there is an optional #0.5 short story that you can read prior to this. Not required, but I suggest reading it.

This was an advanced reader copy.

LOVED THIS BOOK.

I loved When Eden Falls so much, it surprised me. I loved the characters, the world building and the sci fi. Then I read Thief of Darkness and honestly, I didn't enjoy it at all. But I think Alana is most charming in romanti-sci writing!

This book was so fun. I loved Plan Q, and this felt like a great extension of that. The world building was enjoyable and creative and the characters were likeable. A lot of male sci fi writers don't write relatable characters.

Alana, please write more of these types of stories!! Whether it's continuing Remi and Torz (bc I'm dying to know if Quarum is all it's cracked up to be) or creating something new. I still think about When Eden Falls and how I want to find more stories like that. When you write sci fi, I think you've got something special.

After reading Plan Q short story I knew I had to read this, and did not regret it. We have Torz and Remi, they rejected their damson mate bond years ago, and now they work together. And Remi has a medalling God invading her dreams, picking at her rejected bond and friendship with Torz. Along with this there is trouble brewing on the stations, which challenges their friendship and their Morals.

As always with Alana's books, it's not short of some action and you never quite sure what is going to happen next. And then there is the angst. With it only written from Remi's POV, you never know what Torz is thinking, so the Angst almost killed me.

This is not heavy on the sci-fi elements, with a hint of fantasy. As always find with her books, I found it an easy read and it draws you in and keeps you reading. I can't wait for the next book.

One of my favorite reads of 2026!

The Quoram Effect is the perfect example of a great sci fi romance with complex characters struggling with a complicated past, trauma, and regrets… something we can all relate to.

They way Alana writes her main character, Remi, is just superb. She makes you feel like you’re right there, in the head of this badass full of emotion turmoil.

The morality of the story, coupled with the appearances of a mysterious Damson God, and other shocking revelations are just perfect. There is love, loyalty, friendship, duty, blackmail and other political intrigue, plus some comebacks that made me laugh out loud while reading in an airplane!

I recommend 100%, even if romance isn’t your thing. Even more if it is. You won’t regret it!

Engaging but rushed.

2.5⭐️

It starts off phenomenally with an intense political plot and two people who love each other dearly who share a bond.

And then
It ends.

And uh, everything is resolved in two chapters.
The ending is honestly pretty bad. Everything just suddenly does a 180 and we're happy now.
And the book tells you how its resolved but the payoff is in no way equal to the build up.

Honestly really disappointed in the ending to what could've been a very satisfying read.

Plan Q was a great teaser for The Quoram Effect. They were both amazing. Not overly heavy, but engaging and very fun to read.

I love Remi and Torz. I started falling for them already in plan q, but this just added a whole new depth to them both together and to themselves. This whole world is beautiful to me, whimsical with the Gods, fantastical, and still with all my favorite scifi and romantic elements. Beautiful story.

Alana Fay Wilson, YOU ARE SOOOO BACK!!

The Quoram Effect is everything I love about Alana Faye Wilsons writing! The political intrigue, the flawed heroin, the tragic love and all about space and different worlds! The idea that there is a planet called Quoram where only Damson couples (fated mates) are allowed to go and it is apparently a paradise. Everyone else has to either live on the space stations and Puran, which is the prison planet where people cannot redeem themselves. Basically the 100 meets fated mates and a paradise. On top of that this book is great for anyone who is looking for a quick read, packed with all the juicy plot points we all so love! Plus do not be scared in the last 10 pages, everything will make sense!!

Thank you very much to Alana Faye Wilson for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
