This book jumps straight into the action, with vivid descriptions and amusing one liners that help bring colour to each character. Each chapter builds upon the last gradually revealing its secrets as the plot unfolds. The characters are well written, with the relationships between them entwining in unexpected and interesting ways. Throughout the novel, the murderous tuba with a history of war experience plays a surprisingly entertaining role, adding a unique surrealist twist to this story. Any fan of historical novels and magical realism would thoroughly enjoy.
