After surviving the battle in Dalelry and uncovering the King of River Storm’s lies, Kienna finds refuge in Dove Port with Moira. Apprenticing under an infamous woodcarver, she begins uncovering pieces of her heritage that point to a far greater purpose. In the process, she learns the weight of trust and that love may not be the weakness she once feared.

Across Alistile, the other Guardians carve their own paths. Deep within the Malintale Forest, Danek pledges himself to Connak and the legendary Hollow Blades. Far to the north, Broan journeys into the frozen mountains to seek an alliance with the reclusive Mountainborn Vikings. Meanwhile, Moira struggles to understand the visions haunting her, even as her growing bond with Tislin brings warmth to the dark.

But escaping River Storm was never enough to escape Vaerin.

As dark shadow magic stirs at the Baila’s command, and long-buried truths rise to the surface, the fragile balance between the Elvish, Viking, and human realms fracture.

The Guardians were trained to protect River Storm.

Now they must decide whether to leave the war behind and claim the lives they were denied… or become the spark that burns the king’s empire to ash

Emotionally Ruined! But in a good way 🔥

A huge thank you to Samantha Vargas for gifting me the opportunity to be an ARC reader, this is an honest review of The Ashborn. 🖤

Kienna, wow! The Guardians! Fated futures, twisted bonds and a future prophesised but not given, it all rests on her shoulders. And she WILL burn to ASH all who stand in her way.

I don’t know how you did it, Samantha but I fell for every male character in that triangle… HARD! The literary genius is beyond words, a story that gripped me tightly, and had my heart pounding and tears streaming down my cheeks at every twist and turn. An absolute must on your TBR for fantasy readers.

Despite the heaviness of the plot and twisting turns of the story there was plenty of banter and as the characters developed they became truly familiar. Making the final chapters all the more devastating.

I have been left with one BURNING question, will Kienna succeed?! Will they ALL know freedom? Or, will the war of inequality continue to rage between the Elvish, Humans, Vikings and whatever else lies beyond the mountains and between the pages. The next book in the story of The Guardians of Alistile has cemented itself firmly in my TBR.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I need to begin this review with an important piece of context: I am a notorious sequel hater. Even extremely popular, beloved sequels have not escaped me.

Well. I apparently can no longer claim that title.

Sam wrote a sequel that not only lived up to everything I loved about book one, but completely defied every expectation I had for what came next. I genuinely think I loved this one even more than the first book (Guardians of Alistile).

We get to move beyond River Storm and see more of Alistile, more of its people, its history, and all of the complicated relationships holding this world together (or very much threatening to tear it apart).

The Guardians are no longer just surviving what happened to them. They’re scattered across Alistile, making choices about who they want to be when no one else gets to decide that for them anymore. And I think that was my favorite part of this book: the question underneath everything of what you do with your life once you finally have the freedom to choose it.

Kienna especially has my heart. Watching her begin to uncover where she comes from while also figuring out what—and who—she actually wants felt like such a natural continuation of her story.

There’s so much happening in this book—Vikings, shadow magic, political unrest, old secrets, complicated loyalties, romance, friendship, betrayal—but it never stopped feeling like a story about people trying to figure out where they belong and who they’re willing to become for the people they love.

And then the ending happened. (I will not be discussing my emotional state at this time.)

Thank you so much to Sam Vargas for letting me read an early ARC. It is genuinely so special getting to watch this series grow, and even more special getting to cheer on someone I adore while she builds it. I love you, I love your work, and I am so ridiculously proud of you.

You officially cured a sequel hater.

... Now give me book three.

OK I was not ready for the emotional trauma Sam Vargas inflicted on me in this book. The Ashborn picks up right where Risen from Ash left off with our Guardians spread throughout the realm. Kienna and Moira are settling in in Dove Port and Danek is coming into his own in Trinity and with the Blades. While Broan sets off on his own adventure into the mountains to meet his Viking family and forge an alliance.

I really enjoyed getting to expand the world of Alistile even further as we travel to the Viking lands and the ruins of M'ran. We also get a deeper look at the magic system as we delve more into the folklore of the Elvish and the mystery around the legends about Kienna.

As with the first book, the multiple POV's continued to add layers, depth and growth to our characters, as well as helping to build the complexity of the plot. Especially between Kienna and her trio of boys. I really enjoyed figuring out their unique connections to each other. As the characters started embracing who they were and coming into their true selves I found myself really starting to like characters that had bothered me in the first book like Broan. On the flip side, while she did really start to find her voice in this book Kienna's actions and behaviours did start to grate on my nerves. Even though I could understand the emotions driving them, at times they just made her seem like a child. But in the end I think this will make for a stronger final arc for her. And Ruva, that sassy wolf has my heart.

This book takes you on a fantastical journey. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll stay up past your bed time because you won't want to put it down. And after that ending I NEED book 3 in my hands right this second!

Thank you to the author and Rattle the Stars PR for my copy in return for my honest review and the chance to be part of the arc team.

5/5 ⭐️

Dare I say I enjoyed book 2 even more than book 1 🙈

Let’s start with the world building. We got a far more expansive view of Alistile and our characters native lands and I really enjoyed learning more about the different cities. With the political tensions and magical elements, it created a world full of history that I think we still have much to learn about.

The characters were another huge aspect of book two. They weren't perfect, and their choices often had consequences, but that made them feel much more realistic. I loved watching them navigate the shifting loyalties and figure out who they could actually trust, and seeing them all develop into their own individuality. Their relationships and dynamics were strong and kept me invested beyond the main plot.
I also take back everything bad I said about Broan, he easily became one of my favorites, right behind Ruva. She is actually the main character in this story.
Baila…. She’s definitely not finding any redemption with me.
As far as who our girl Kienna ends up with, I have to say I was very surprised.

The story continuation delivered plenty of tension, twists, betrayal, and moments that had me questioning everything. I was also NOTTT ready for the absolute heartbreak I endured at the end, but I’m hoping for an absolute miracle in book 3. If not, I may simply perish from devastation.

By the end, I was emotionally invested and very much in need of the next book. If I don’t get that miracle I mentioned, I will have some choice words for Ms. Vargas (for legal purposes, this is a joke).
On a series note, though, if you enjoy epic fantasy’s with political intrigue, magical bonds, wolf companions, and slow-burn romance, this series is definitely for you!

I don’t know where to begin.

Risen from Ash (Book 1) was entertaining, magical, deep and gave the perfect dynamics of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Legend of Vox Machina. But The Ashborn took my heart on an emotional roller coaster I was not ready for and I’m not mad about it. Devastated. But not mad. I’ve read many books in the fantasy genre but Sam takes epic to a whole new level. I did not plan for this series to wrought tears but it did. I cannot fathom the skill that goes into being able to write over 8 POVs while still allowing the reader to grow genuinely attached to each and every character. She’s established them each so successfully that even in the varying glimpses we get through each one, you know the value each of them brings to the development of others and the plot as a whole.

As a reader, the Ashborn is engaging, refreshing and exciting! It displays realistic and flawed characters that are still lovable and interesting. It’s deeply developed and the lore is top tier. I would read the entire series again (in fact I intend to and I don’t normally re-read fiction).

As a writer, I can blatantly see the level of skill in Sam’s prose. (I learn so much from simply reading her books) so if you don’t read this series for the adventure, read it for the research because you WILL become a better writer afterward whether you mean to or not. She understands plot, character development, the rise and falls of action and the spaces inbetween that allow us as readers to catch our breaths and reflect.

I LOVE the Guardians of Alistile. I love Kienna. I love Ruva and I love this world and I know you will too.

ARC REVIEW: 'The Ashborn' by Sam Vargas.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 stars)

A brilliant continuation from book 1! We dive much deeper into the story, learning more about each of the Guardians and their intriguing pasts, as well as the way each of the different worlds work and intertwine. The reader is kept on the edge of their seat, with every answered question leading to even more unanswered ones.

As Kienna moves throughout the story, the world building is intricately built up around her pulling the reader into the world with every detail. The plot is so well paced, with fast action packed fight scenes interlinked with slower, more emotional ones allowing the reader to feel every single emotion possible.

This book continues with multiple POV's throughout, which Sam Vargas has beautifully crafted - I didn't feel overwhelmed or confused at all, and found each POV built depth and layers to the story allowing me to be fully immersed in both the storyline and the world. I adored the complexity of the relationships between Kienna and the other characters, especially between her, Danek and Ruva which we get to see develop and deepen from book 1.

What I truly love about all the characters is how real them seem, their emotions and reactions are so relatable. Each have their own flaws whilst still remaining engaging and believable, as well as their own character development throughout the book. They really make you think about whose side you are on, and how each side can have both good and bad people on them.

Thank you so much @samvargas for an eARC of this book, I am really looking forward to the rest of the series!

Guardians of Alistile series, Book 2
The Ashborn
by Samantha Vargas

First of all, let me start with this cover is absolutely stunning! The artwork alone had me excited, but once I started reading, I was completely hooked from page one.
I'm so grateful to be part of the Street team for both books, and this sequel exceeded my every expectation. Ms. Vargas continues to build a rich, immersive fantasy world that keeps getting better with every chapter.

Not giving away spoilers. But I've got to talk about Kienna’s growth in this book was everything. Watching her step out of everyone else’s shadow and start choosing herself was one of my favorite parts of the story. She’s fierce, vulnerable, and still figuring things out, which made her feel so real. Her journey toward embracing her strength and independence felt earned, and I found myself cheering her on every step of the way.
Getting to know the Guardians storyline added new depth to the world while giving each character a chance to grow. The emotional moments hit hard, the world building was phenomenal, and the mysteries only became more intriguing. Let's not forget King Vaerin, He’s still one of those morally gray villains you absolutely love to hate.
If you are a fan of epic fantasy/Romantasy love stories with unforgettable characters, incredible world-building, found family, political intrigue, magic, and a heroine discovering her true power, this series belongs on your TBR.

Impatiently waiting for Book 3. Ms. Samantha Vargas has created something truly Beautiful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the second book in the Guardians of Alistile. An epic fantasy series by Samantha Vargas. The last book had left me wondering when more of the detail about the politics and prophecies that were hinted at in book one would be revealed. This book was a satisfying second entry as it addressed multiple open questions that helped us better understand the main characters and why they were not always as forthcoming as we’d have liked in book one.

In this installment, Kienna starts to realize that that it is time to take ownership of her own life and her future. She simultaneously lets go of some old ideas while also becoming closer with the people she had misjudged before she knew more of the big picture. She builds a family of close friends and allies and truly puts her power to the test for the first time in a well written and exciting battle scene.

Kienna learns so much about her past in this book and it’s really rewarding when the author reveals more about her origins in this book. Like most second books, it’s hard to say much without spoilers. We spend a lot of time in the perspectives of Kienna’s friends and allies as well learning more about characters from book one and meeting a new cast of characters.

By the end of this book, it’s clear that Kienna has been through a lot and it will be interesting to see where the traumas of book two come into play in book three. All in all, another engrossing and enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to what comes next for Kienna.

🔥✨ ARC REVIEW ✨🔥
Guardians of Alistile: The Ashborn
by Samantha Vargas

Thank you so much to Samantha Vargas for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. 💙

✨ When ancient powers awaken, new legends must rise… ✨

Guardians of Alistile: The Ashborn swept me into a world filled with magic, mystery, and the feeling that something much bigger than the characters themselves was waiting to be uncovered.

Samantha Vargas creates a captivating fantasy world filled with adventure, secrets, and powerful forces that keep the story moving. I loved the sense of discovery throughout this journey — uncovering the mysteries of Alistile and watching the characters navigate the challenges placed in front of them.

The characters brought so much heart to the story, each carrying their own struggles, strengths, and reasons to keep fighting. Watching their growth and the bonds they formed along the way made this adventure even more compelling.

There is something so exciting about stepping into a new fantasy world where magic, destiny, and danger collide. Guardians of Alistile: The Ashborn delivers an engaging journey full of wonder, courage, and the promise of even more to come.

A fantastic start to what feels like an exciting fantasy adventure, and I’m looking forward to seeing where this world goes next. 🔥✨

Thank you again for the ARC, Samantha Vargas! 💙

Oh man. First off, I want to say how much I appreciate being on the ARC team for this book. I read an advance copy of book 1 too and this story just continues to grow and surprise me!

Kienna is....strong, and frustrating, and resilient, and relatable. Some of her decisions irritate me, but they make sense for her character and her growth. She's expected to be this great leader, except no one is telling her what that even means. She's supposed to embrace her heritage, only she has to piece it together on her own. She still doesn't know who she is while everyone around her seems to. She's been controlled her entire life and just wants to choose her own path for once. 100% understandable.

The Guardians each find their own paths in this book, and I loved seeing them grow into their power. But don't worry, there are still plenty of mysteries to figure out loose ends to tie up for Book 3! King Vaerin is as repulsive and powerful as ever, and he is SO easy to hate!!

No spoilers here, but I can safely say that this story had me feeling ALL the feelings. Between the emotional resonance and incredible world building and character depth, it's a five-star read for me!

Side note: I hope the official release adds in a quick recap since there's a LOT to unpack here! It took me a minute to catch myself back up but it was easy to lose myself in this world after that!

Worth way more than five stars. The Ashborn will pull at your heartstrings and have you laughing. Absolutely incredible story and the journey of these characters hold a special place in my heart. I may have finished reading reading it but I haven't finished thinking about it.
I was immersed in its breathtaking world, where every detail feels vivid, intentional, and alive. The world building is absolutely incredible, but what truly makes this story unforgettable are the connections you make with the characters. The emotions are raw, powerful, and heartbreakingly real, so make sure to have tight grip on the book and Kleenex near by.
Kienna's journey is one of my favorite parts of the book. Watching her grow into her strength, find her voice, and finally begin to embrace who she is was so rewarding. The story completely shatters your heart and yet there is plenty of laughter.
The relationships, the bonds, Ruva and the characters all add so much depth and heart to this story. Every connection feels meaningful, and every moment carries emotional weight.
The Ashborn is epic, emotional, and impossible to put down. If you love richly built fantasy worlds, unforgettable characters, and books that will leave your heart in pieces, this is one you absolutely need to read.

What a Steller sequel!

The fractures of the realm deepen as each guardian begins separate journeys living outside of River Storm. Each of them, especially our heroine Kienna, learn more of their past while recovering from their upbringing within River Storm. They grow, learn to live outside the tyrant's control, and how the politics of the Elven, human, and Vikings' worlds operate. Yet, the King is not done with them and their is still many secrets of themselves, their powers, and relationships to uncover.

The author's prose is always amazing and she pulls you in with every detail. However, the real strength of the sequel is pacing and story. It's almost as if the reader is lulled into a false sense of security along with our heroine. Kienna dives into her history, uncovers more family than she has ever known, and just when you think how her story might unfold... WHAM!!! Emotional damage! One which will drive Kienna and her companions for many books to come! It's immaculate story telling!

I'm eager to see how the story will unfold from here, and the Author is planning a SIX-book series! I know it's going to continue to be epic. Well done!

Samantha Vargas took an already lush world and expanded on it making it even more magical. She did such a wonderful job at times that I felt like I was in the midst of the story, right along side the characters. She is a wonderful story teller and has created a fantasy that I hope to share with my children once they are much older.

The lore and history of the world and characters are well explored, questions are being answered but sometimes those answers left me with more questions than what I started with.

The characters are well written and multifaceted. They have the ability to make you fall in love with them or absolutely despise them. It's a full and well rounded cast that helps not only move along the plot but gives depth.

The story has its highs and lows but keeps you intrigued throughout. Be ready for a roller coaster ride of epic proportions.

After that ending, I'm unwell and craving more. I'm fully invested in this story and intrigued concerning where it goes from here.

Thank you to Samantha Vargas and RTSPR for the e-ARC of The Ashborn.

I received this arc and I’m leaving an honest review.
This series loves making me wait for answers!! Starting off where book 1 ended I was dropped into a world of emotional damage! I can’t tell you how many times I said “can somebody please just give this girl some straight answers?” Kienna he’s still trying to figure out who she is and it seems that everybody knows except for her. Each character is finding out what they truly are but Kienna is still struggling to accept who she could be. Just when I thought I knew who the villains were the story had me changing my mind. And don’t even get me started on the ending! One heartbreak after another. Kienna’s decisions have left me speechless and desperate for the next book!! Would have been 5 ⭐️ but it lagged a little in the beginning.

Thank you Sam for letting me read and review an ARC copy of The Ashborn!

After reading and loving Risen From Ash I could not wait to see what happens next with the Guardians and I was not disappointed!
I love how Sam is able to write from many different POVS in a way that you don’t feel lost or overwhelmed while reading!
Each of the Guardians follows their own path in this book figuring out who they are individually but also keeping them together as a group. I could not get enough of the character growth of each of these characters especially Kienna. She went through so much in book 1 without many answers as to who she truly is.
The story development and pacing in this was perfect! And so was the emotional damage I don’t know how I’m going to recover!

I’m just going to sit here and impatiently wait for book 3!

I received an ARC of this book. This review is voluntary and expresses my own thoughts and opinions.

Well Book 2 definitely made up my mind on how I feel about Kienna. And I am not a fan. The rest of the cast of characters are wonderful and I love them all. But man, Kienna is just so whiny and has such a victim mentality, that while understandable, is not endearing at all and does not create that prophesied one savior of a nation kind of feeling.

The romantic relationships in this book are all over the place.

But the found family is on point.

the plot lines develop slowly and then suddenly explode and then go back to slow. I think pacing in general is an issue, as it’s not consistent at all.

But damn, the emotional damage in this book…the end had me literally sobbing.

Samantha truly knows how to put her characters and her readers through the emotional wringer. The Ashborn completely shattered me in the best way possible, especially watching Kienna quietly pick up the pieces of her broken identity in Dove Port while Moira’s terrifying, agonizing visions completely broke my heart. What hurt the most, though, was the physical separation of the five guardians; their beautiful, found-family bond was the absolute anchor of the first book for me, so watching them get scattered across the map felt like a visceral ache that lasted through every single chapter. Even though the massive world-building expansion into the frozen Viking mountains was stunning. It is a darker, much more painful sequel, but the raw emotional stakes made it so good.

The Ashborn was such a great continuation of the series! I loved following Kienna as she continued her journey to discover who she truly is, fight for what's right, and build a relationship with her long-lost grandfather. With each book, she becomes stronger, more confident, and even easier to root for.

I also loved that this installment spent more time developing the friendships within the group. Watching the characters learn more about themselves, grow individually, and become stronger. It added so much heart to the story. The adventure, action, and character growth kept me invested from beginning to end, and now I can't wait to pick up the next book and continue Kienna's journey.

The absolute most amazing book I have read in a bit! Guardians of Alistile: The Guardian was just a book that captivated you from the very start.
It was a book that you have to binge. You immediately fall in love with the characters and the way the book is written is just absolutely fabulous. The world is built of perfect. I love how everything just flowed there was never no issues of being confused or too much going on or things going on that you didn't understand it was just beautiful. I absolutely love this book so much. There are several books that Samantha Vargas has you need to read as well. She is an amazing author!!

It is a common thing in media today, whether it be books, movies or shows, to find a sequel that does not live up to the first.

This was not that sequel.

Written from the heart, The Ashborn continues the story of Kienna and friends as they uncover truths and half-truths about the world they thought they knew, and prepare to fight against evil…but what face does that evil take?

The story progresses steadily, no scene wasted or rushed. Stakes are raised dramatically, till I was literally on the edge of my seat for the last quarter of the book. And the ending? I need book 3 in my hands yesterday.

Following right where Risen from Ash (book 1 of the series) concludes, the mystery deepens and some truths begin to surface, but there are so many more questions with each chapter. There are so many moments of high tension, with very little resolution. Don’t let your guard down for a single page. Buckle up, settle in and get ready for anything and everything. Book 1 was character development and world building and book 2 is where the story turns into an epic. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

An amazing second book in a wonderful epic fantasy series! I enjoyed the vast world building, dynamic cast of characters, and unique magic system.

This book was somehow even better than the first. I laughed, I cried, and I can’t stop thinking about that ending. I can’t wait to read book 3!

I highly recommend this book series to lovers of fantasy, especially those who enjoy found family trope.

Well this book has a spot on my top 5 of 2026!

I love how descriptive the writing is- there were scenes where I felt like I could smell/hear/see everything!

I don’t think I’ve made so many highlights in a book before, but there were so many great quotes and phrases that caught my eye- whether because it hit me in the feels, or because it gave me ideas for how the story would go.

My favorite quote: “The river doesn’t care which way you swim. Only how long you last.”

The Ashborn picks up right where Risen From Ash ended. There are parts that had me very intrigued and captivated. And once kienna finally admits the truth to herself, things picked up! Kienna is a complex character who frustrated me at times with not knowing exactly what she wanted. She struggled to see the bigger picture with things happening around her.

This series just keeps getting better and better! I love how much we get to see each character grow. Kienna will always be my favorite. I loved seeing Danek become who he truly is. This book kept me asking for more and more. I didn’t want to put it down.

I love watching Kienna grow and learn more about herself. I will continue to love watching her evolve throughout the story. I also enjoyed that we were able to get a deeper dive into each characters pasts from when they were taken.

I cannot wait to see where book three takes us because I know it’ll be just as good! The ending of book two was just crazy and I’m ready for book three now!
