I'm currently devouring these volumes at a pace faster than I can manage to write reviews for them. There's an almost uncontrollable excitement that surges through me whenever I stumble upon a series so compelling and addictive—it genuinely fills me with such happiness, and these feelings tend to linger for quite a while. As someone who struggles with depression, experiencing this kind of joy is genuinely the best feeling in the world.

This particular volume has everything I could have hoped for. Every single story arc was executed perfectly, hitting all the right notes, and the revelations within each chapter were truly magnificent, adding layers of depth and surprise. I can't pretend I wasn't moved to tears because I absolutely was.

Regarding Chu Wanning, this volume portrays him enduring significant suffering. He's a character who prefers to deal with pain alone and refrains from sharing his struggles with others. That tendency makes his suffering even harder to watch, especially when he keeps everything bottled up inside.

Meanwhile, Mo Ran finally awakens from his slumber and starts to reconnect with his true self once more. I had been eagerly waiting for this moment, and I couldn't be happier that he finally truly starts to treat Chu Wanning well. It felt like a cause for celebration when he began to change his feelings and perceptions about Chu Wanning.

Xue Meng's character truly tugged at my heartstrings. His unwavering love and respect for Chu Wanning, along with his constant loyalty, stood out profoundly. He's the kind of person who, even if Chu Wanning were to commit the worst offenses, would still stand by him and defend him loudly and proudly. I love him deeply.

Now, the developing romance between Chu Wanning and Mo Ran is especially heartwarming. Their relationship subtly and gradually evolved throughout this volume, making steady progress that felt realistic and nuanced. Mo Ran's treatment of Chu Wanning was especially touching—showing his genuine feelings as soon as he recognized everything Chu Wanning had done for him. His quickness to act and his determination to treat Chu Wanning with kindness and respect were remarkable.

Their relationship is filled with intricate complications and knots that are difficult to untangle, yet resolving even one of these issues seems to make the rest more manageable. The pain and hurt embedded in their connection become even more intense when you learn about their shared past and the history that binds them. Discussing Mo Ran or their relationship in detail is challenging because doing so would spoil many plot points.

In conclusion, I'm diving into volume 4 immediately.

4,5 'Wontons, stairs, and Mo Ran's childhood' stars

I don't know if anything is really a spoiler, except if you don't know absolutely nothing about erha.

These are, in my opinion, three saddest moments of vol 3. I kind of knew what to excpect from this volume because I spoiled myself these scenes way before I even started but it was still very heratbreaking to actually read them. However, before I get to these sad moments, I have to talk about the earlier chapters first. I never get tired of Chu Wanning and Mo Ran being arrogantly powerful.

Li Wuxin had reached the limit of his patience. [...] "Do you dare proclaim yourself the creator of the Sigil of the Returning Billows?!"
Chu Wanning lifted his eyes and considered him stonly. He took another sip of tea before leisirely replying, "Darent't I? Then I'll tell you now."
Li Wuxin stared at him in confusion.
"I created the Sigil of the Returning Billows."

High above them, Mo Ran's brows were drawn low in a frown. "Didn't I fucking say that no one is to touch this barrier?" he asked darkly. "Tell me, are you deaf or stupid?!"
He may have loathed Chu Wanning, but that was between the two of them. Be it in his past life or this one, on pain of death, he would never permit anyone but himslef to touch so much as a hair on Chu Wanning's head.

Fanart by 葵小小

Now, let's go onto the sad parts 😭😭😭😭

The whole heavenly rift arc is so tragic. As I said, I already knew what happens, so it was even more painful to read about Mo Ran believing that Chu Wanning abandoned him. Like Xue Meng, I also wanted to shake him and yell at him for being so blind and not seeing Shizun's actions. And then, when Mo Ran finally does find out... it's written so painfully...

Fanart by eneada

"No way..." Mo Ran choked on a low sob and clutched at his head. He murmured helplessly, "No way..."
"The stairs are still stained with a trail of blood; that's the road he took to bring you home." Xue Meng's hatred made him ruthless. "Go look for yourself, Mo Ran. Go look."

Fanart by zolaida

"Ge." Xue Meng had finally stopped crying, but his voice was flat like he was dead. "We don't have a shizun anymore."

My heart was shattering reading this scene!! First Mo Ran not being able to believe, then Xue Meng's broken 'ge'. If only Chu Wanning could see how much he is loved.

The wontons... I know, I'm repeating myself but this scene really was sooo sad!! As readers, we already know that Chu Wanning has a soft side. But Mo Ran seeing this for the first time.

Chu Wanning's human soul had lost its sight, couldn't tell one voice from another, didn't even know what day it was. He'd likely returned to the world of the living because he believed he'd done something wrong, had made a mistake, and felt bad about it. Wanted to make up for it.

Fanart by thekansta

It broke my heart because it broke Mo Ran's heart; realizing how much he had hurt the one person that never gave up on him, the one person who stayed with him till the end.

"Shizun, if you just come back, I'll listen to everything you say... I'll respect you, I'll cherish you, I'll treat you right..."

I also mentioned Mo Ran's childhood. He was such a sweet child and he tried so hard to take care of his mom. It wasn't much said about his mother yet but poor woman really didn't deserved all the horrible things that happened to her and her son.

The following scene didn't make it into top 3 saddest moment (despite being on the cover) but that's just because it happened in the past, so in my opinion, it's slightly less sad. Afterall, that was in the past when everything was tragic anyway but ranwan are finally doing better in the present timeline and I want to keep it that way.

"It's useless. Mo Ran, I used the last of my life to summon Jiuge. This is the end for me. But if you... yet have any clarity in your heart, then please... forgive..."

Chu Wanning raised a trembling hand, and a cold fingertip - as if out of pity, but also almost tender - poked lightly at Mo Ran's forehead. "Then please forgive... forgive yourself..."

Fanart by ertroveria

😭😭😭 well, it still makes me very very sad. Just thinking about what Chu Wanning went through because he didn't want to give up. But we all have a breaking point. I can't imagine how hard must have been to summon his holy weapon without his core.

Mo Ran didn't believe - he refused to believe - that Chu Wanning could just die like this. That the great zongshi of an era, that high and lofty man, his shizun, the person he despised more than anyone, could just die like this. Lying in his arms at the edge of heeavenly Lake, dyed red with blood. Growing cold bit by bit, cold as frost, frozen like ice.

Poor Mo Ran here 😢😢 I still have mixed feelings about Taxian-Jun but seeing him so broken over Chu Wanning's death 🥺🥺

Alright, enough sadness. There were also many precious moments between ranwan 💞

Between the flashed of lighting and crashing of thunder, he reached out without thinking and pulled Chu Wanning into a tight embrace. Frenzied heartbeats againts quivering soul. Chest to chest.

Fanart by eneadart

I have to admit that the underworld arc dragged just a little bit. I missed all the other charachters no matter that it was interesting to learn more about Chu Xun. But of course, I got totally invested again, when Mo Ran found Chu Wanning 🥰

Chu Wanning lay asleep on this fur rug. He was the kind of person who, though he appeared resolute and undaunted, was in truth ever a little uneasy deep down. This manifested most clearly in sleep - he always slept curled up, shriking into himslef to make himslef smaller. As if he was trying to keep warm, but also as if he was afraid to take up too much space. Seen like this, he looked frail and a little pitiful.

My poor baby! That was equally cute and heartbreaking 🥰💔

"When Chu Wanning's eyes fluttered open, he found himslef lying in Mo Ran's embrace. The look of concern on the young man's face, those features that had yet to fully mature, was an expression the likes of which he'd never seen. He furrowed his brow and thought that perhaps this was some kind of dream. Thus, after a moment, he sighed and closed his eyes once more.
"Shizun?" someone called by his ear. It wasn't Wanning this time. "Shizun! Shizun!"
Chu Wanning's phoenix eyes flew open.

Fanart by tiangouu

I have a feeling my head is empty and I can't come up with something better, except that I really love ranwan so much and can't wait to see more of them together in vol 4. And now, let's wait 5 years for Shizun to wake up 😌

"A misunderstanding of one year is a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding of ten years is an injustice. A misunderstanding of a lifetime, from life unto death, is fate."

This volume gutted me. I outright SOBBED no less than three times and was an emotional wreck for the remaining time.

After being disappointed with book two, I was not expecting this volume to be this amazing. The misunderstanding between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning had been eating me up; seriously putting a damper on my overall enjoyment of the story. Finally, having it all laid out and explained was so cathartic and satisfying that it felt like I was drifting on a cloud for the remainder of the story. Still crying and experiencing every emotion under the sun... but freely, without that dark layer of confusion that made everything 10x more heartbreaking.

That probably doesn't even make sense, so I'll just say that I LOVED this volume, and I'm so happy with where the story went.

"Chu Wanning was like a person exposed to the freezing cold for too long. Suddenly plunged into warm water, he felt not warmth, but pain. He had never been wanted before, so he hadn't even known that to be frozen was an agony. But now that there was someone who treasured him, who surrounded him with warmth, it was as though he finally had the right to feel pain. Every inch of his body was on fire, every inch of his skin cracked. Only now did he feel the hurt." 🥰

Gah! Chu Wanning deserves all the love Mo Ran is finally willing to show him. I can't wait for the next volume to come out! 5 stars 💜

Edit 19/02: I just saw a pretty a fan art and realised I’m still emotionally ruined by this series. Fuck my life.

The best part about hurt/comfort is first the hurt and then the comfort.

I’m in this series so deep now. Its claws are under my skin.

"A misunderstanding of one year is a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding of ten years is an injustice. A misunderstanding of a lifetime, from life unto death, is fate."

Finally, the volume in which all of the drama is resolved; all of the bad feelings were produced by a misunderstanding about Wonton. It's both hilarious and sad.

We finally saw Chu Wanning's genuine side. They're falling in love, and I'm here for it. The entire heavenly rift storyline is incredibly disastrous.

Finally, the most tragic dialogue (which I nearly saw everywhere, making my dumb ass upset since I assumed Shizun had died).

"Ge." Xue Meng had finally stopped crying, but his voice was flat like he was dead. "We don't have a shizun anymore."

This statement crushed my heart, but then there was this lovely art after it. It was simultaneously heartbreaking and lovely.

""No way..." Mo Ran choked on a low sob and clutched at his head. He murmured helplessly, "No way..."
"The stairs are still stained with a trail of blood; that's the road he took to bring you home." Xue Meng's hatred made him ruthless. "Go look for yourself, Mo Ran. Go"

Later, we see Mo Ran's upbringing and what happened to his mother, and the art truly brought everything to life and beauty.

And now for the scene in which we see TXJ. That scene was incredible, but I'm still divided about my feelings for him. I'm here for the redemption arc, and I think the author did an excellent job there.

Let us now wait for Shizun to awaken after five years. *sobs*

i cannot even begin to describe just how many different emotions i went through just in this volume alone

meatbun continues to dig my heart clean out of my chest by writing the most disturbing, heartbreaking, devastating scenes out there only to turn right back around two seconds later and gently put my heart back in my chest by giving me the sweetest fluff

and it’s exhausting. not even factoring in my messed up sleep schedule, since starting erha my brain feels like it’s melting 24/7 because when i’m not reading erha i’m thinking about erha

this volume tore me up soooooo bad but by the end i was oddly at ease? i feel like at this point (yes i know there is more to come hdjdhshdhs), i know to enjoy every little bit of crumb of sweetness erha gives me because it most certainly will never last for long 🥰

mo ran and chu wanning are two characters who are full of so many layers and i love them to pieces. but like,,,also,,,i seriously want to reach through the pages of this book and shake these two until they learn how to communicate because they are TERRIBLE but i kind of love it at the same time cjwjcjwjdh

on the surface but those dumb misunderstandings cracks me up because they literally connect the most random dots & simply decide to roll with it until everything blows up in their faces. but on the other hand? sooooooo much agony in their past lives could have prevented if they actually cleared everything up

erha rewires my brain chemistry, ranwan makes me feel a level of unhinged that i don’t think i ever felt about a fictional ship before

p.s. meatbun i’m praying for the next volume to not destroy me as much as this one did, let me just have one volume where i don’t cry my eyes out okay??? 😭

HOLYFUCKINGSHITHSGJHJGHKGHHSGJKSHJJHJSKNHJKSHGJKGSN 😭😭💔🤯🥺❤️😭😭

this review (rant of me gushing about how amazing this was) is about to have some MAJOR spoilers....

first before i get started, i quite literally thought my world was crashing down when i read how chu wanning carried mo ran on his back on the brink of death, crawling up over three thousands steps to save his life. who thought it was okay to allow this tragedy in a book 😭 and the damn wontons!!!! 😭😭😭 i had to take a break and cry my eyes out at least 3 times….i don’t even know how to deal with myself after reading these scenes. i don’t think i’ll ever recover.

is it too much to say that this is one of my favorite books i've ever read in my life? 😂 i was glued to the pages from start to finish. definitely my favorite volume so far. it is even possible for two people to be as much as soulmates as mo ran and chu wanning? i did not think this level of soulmates was reachable to be honest. i need to know wtf meatbun puts in her books because i get the exact same feeling with hexie (from case file compendium) and i swear these two couples are the only ones who have given me this type of feeling ever. like saying they’re soulmates doesn’t do them justice enough 🥺❤️ the DEVOTION?! and this is only the beginning too! i can just imagine the lengths mo ran is about to go through for chu wanning. that man is helplessly down bad, infatuated, and completely obsessed with chu wanning. THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT??????? how does this author even do it?????? the way things are slowly being revealed to show that mo ran's actually been in love with chu wanning this whole time is chefs kiss. and the realizations mo ran came to on his own? 😭 SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED, yet meatbun reveals things at such a good pace and in such a devastating way it feels like your life is being ruined. when mo ran said he regretted what he has done in his past life I BELIEVED HIM 😭 i genuinely felt his regret and his want to make up for what he's done. THE PLOT? BITCHHHHHH i was shook!! most of the time danmeis confuse tf out of me, but i was fully immersed in this plotline and could not tear my eyes away.

if the rest of the series is anything like this book, i think my tears will never stop 😭 but i'm feeling so thankful i finally started this series 🤗🥰
