Kotik: A Russian Mafia Romance
The first time I met Vitali Konstantinov, he broke a man’s hand for touching me on the bus.
My name is Katya Petrovna.
Once, I was a girl who imagined a better life while navigating a gritty, cold, and economically depressed post-Soviet Russia ruled by political corruption and organized crime.
Then, Vitali came into my life.
I never thought this would be my story. What started out with roses and Mama greeting him at the door became my shaking fingers wrapped around the grip of a Makarov pistol.
Became caviar and fur coats.
Became watching a gangster get cooked on the floor.
Became a love the likes of which I’ve never known.
My name is Katya Petrovna, and this is the story of my best decisions and my worst mistakes.

I am SHOCKED. Easily one of the best mafia romances I’ve ever read. Guys, this felt SO real it actually gave me goosebumps.
We’re talking early ’90s post-Soviet Russia, right after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unreliable paychecks, blackouts, shortages, corruption, economic chaos and organized crime rising everywhere. The whole setting felt incredibly authentic.
And when Katya first met Vitali and he broke a guy’s hand for groping her on the bus? Well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly a random coincidence that he happened to be there. 👀 We find out why later.
We get only a handful of Vitali’s POVs, but HOLY HELL. His obsession, manipulation and pain? That man is a walking red flag factory, and I was absolutely here for it.
And the writing! It has this slightly old-fashioned, almost unusual feel to it, but somehow that made the whole experience even better. It felt raw, immersive and refreshingly different from your typical mafia romance.
I don’t know how to explain it, but this actually felt like REAL mafia. And I loved every second of it. 🫶

Excuse me while I pick up my face off the floor, because what do you meaaan!
If you want to take a rec from me, please choose this one. It's definitely in my top dark romances of the year at this point. I didn't expect to be so consumed by it!
Also Alina, sign me up to all of your books, all and everything you write asap! 😂😂
I'm very much in love with the writing, the pace and especially the vivid atmosphere that this book creates, the 90's post Soviet Russia is illustrated in the most breath taking way throughout this. And as a Romanian girlie who's lived through the 90s in my childhood, while I don't remember much, the communist influence was there, and there were so many things that impacted our culture from there. And as such I knew so many things and could point them out like an AHA! moment lol. Of course this is rather personal to me, but I'm sure that even people that live outside of anything to do with eastern Europe or Russia, could very much appreciate the beauty that Alina created in this story.
And aside from the setting, we do have the Bratva mafia element, which is not painted as something to be enjoyable or admired in any way, but rather shown as something cruel and chilling, through some actions that will definitely leave you either speechless or make you wanna close the book. Especially towards the end.
I don't even know what to say about the couple, because I love them so much and got attached to them super quickly! BUT before 60% I was like omg this is so cute, look at them omg, and after 60% I wanted to scream into the void honestly. The whiplash it gave me was real. Not to say that I didn't enjoy it because it was SOOOO WELL DONE, applause. This is the kind of dark romance that I like to read. The raw, unfiltered, absolutely insane type of reads that leave you wondering wtf after. Vitali is one true little psychopath, we got a little of his POV at parts and it was giving me a few chills reading how he sees the world.
Really loved all the side characters portrayed in this, how the author created all of their profiles without ever blending anything, all the distinct voices, and especially also Misha!! Omg I hope he gets a book because if he does I would actually lose it!! He's not a perfect character by any means, but throughout the book he also became a favorite!!
In conclusion, an absolutely gorgeous DEBUT novel in this genre, that I will probably try to pick up as a shelf trophy as well and will definitely be thinking about this couple for a while!!💖💖💖

Lucky I don’t love mafia romances that much because I’m not sure how one will ever top this one. This is the most realistic take of the genre I could have ever imagined.
If I had to use one word to describe this book it would be atmospheric. It’s set in the 90s Russia after the fall of communism and having grown up in post communism Eastern Europe myself it was so easy to get immersed in the concrete brutalist jungle. I can feel it in my bones that’s how good the author was at projecting it into the pages.
Now you want psychopath? There’s a psychopath. The romance and the est he loves of absolutely obsessive and toxic. The fucked in the head score sits at 10/10. He’s so irredeemable I wasn’t even sure I’m not reading a tragedy. I don’t even think this story deserved a happy ending, but sometimes we just love too hard, even when we know it’s bad for us.
Do yourself a favor and read this 😩😩
Edited to add, since I can’t stop thinking about this book. The few chapters written from vitalis perspective really stuck to me. The way his mind and inner thoughts were written had such an impact. I keep thinking about the static and the TV analogy and the way he saw Katyas reality versus his. Also I really liked that some things were left open ended. I’m still thinking about Vera and Michas implications versus his explanation.

I'm finished, but I'm still processing the last 25%...😳😳😳
I will say it's almost certainly a 4-5 star, but I have to work it all out in my head first, so review to come after I stare at a wall a while....😂

I read this as an original work on a fanfic site before it was available in print and let me tell you it is worth paying for. This was a fantastic read and I’m obsessed with Vitali. The 1990’s imagery was so well written I could picture myself back in time. If you like dark Russian mafia romance, definitely give this one a try!

Let me start by saying that I never read books like this, so giving it 5 stars is a big deal. This is my first "mafia romance" book, and I was completely hooked with the "Acknowledgements" page. Maybe because I'm a "good girl" who fell in love with "the bad boy"... But I LOVE these characters! Maybe I identify with young Katya to a certain extent, and who doesn't love a crazy, possessive hot guy like Vitali?!! Maybe I'm a nut. Maybe I'm 53 years old now and just needed a reminder of young love/lust. Either way, I could not put this book down! Great ending also. Thank you Alina Dobrova.

This just wasn't for me. The writing style felt very old school which made it hard for me to connect with either the story or the characters. And when a man disappears for a month after going on a date with you and the response is basically "okay, welcome back" you've officially lost me.
Not only do booktok recs suck, now Reddit recs suck too.

4 stars
I really enjoyed this authors other work Binary 44 which is available on Ao3. I think it was slightly stronger than Kotik, but with that being said, this was still very well written and researched. And the romance was top notch. It was a little slow to start, but it definitely kept me on my toes once it got going.

Wow!
The best way I can describe this book is mafia fiction with strong romantic themes. This mafia slow burn romance is about two seriously flawed characters finding love and compassion with each other and having to actively choose each other every day. A true love story. The author’s writing is so unique and detailed you feel like you are experiencing their harsh life. Told mainly from the viewpoint of Katya the story is part mafia fiction, part love story and part mystery. The reader is discovering right along with Katya how all the pieces fit together. And wow! When everything falls in place you are like “Woah!”.
I look forward in reading more by this author.
The themes in this book are very dark. Vitali’s childhood is described on page in flashbacks and is very hard to read.
Tropes/CW: Mafia, Childhood trauma, PTSD, drug use, forced imprisonment, slow burn, possessive her, obsessive hero, stalking, virgin heroine, virgin hero, poverty, historical(1990s) and death of a loved one.
Spice level: 🌶️🌶️

Hands down one of the best mafia romances I've read so far. Engagingly written and the backdrop of a fallen apart Russia is highly intruiging.

3⭐️? (I think…?)
I really really wanted to like this. And I did for the first half of the book actually. But then after that I feel it just went downhill!
The writing style was so enigmatic that I was second-guessing and struggling to understand most of what I was trying to read, no matter how many times I reread it. I really did not enjoy the Vera drama in the second half of the book. She seemed like the obsession preceding our Kotik which I did not enjoy and did not understand why Katya so easily overlooked it, when she was an extremely jealous person. More importantly, I was so confused. Who actually was Vera? Did he love her or not? How did he find Katya? What was actually going on in his head- I understand he used to mentally black out and lose control but what actually is that condition? What happened in his childhood specifically to produce this version of him? Also, I was mad at Katya for not being more willing to keep in touch with her one and only childhood best friend, Elena. Moreover, her relationship with her mother fully fell apart, not to be salvaged, which was disappointing and sad.
The first half of the book had me giggling, kicking my feet and squealing! It was so so so cute and adorable, and I loved to see a DR MMC actually courting the FMC for once, while sneaking his way into the hearts of her family members. And Vitali’s devotion to Katya was incomparable and intense. He literally mauled and destroyed the men who hurt her and it was so satisftingly dark. Like this man was more than happy to let her use him for money, just to have her around! I loved to see it! And I loved how Katya, despite being the “good girl” in this relationship wasn’t meek and didn’t just take whatever Vitali gave her, like cutting herself out of the collar and leash. Some of the lines in this book were unbelievably sweet and swoon-worthy!
“I’ll give it all to you, Kotik,” he said, shrugging, as if telling me to order anything on the menu at a fast food restaurant. “I’ll give you money, love, and forever.”
“And then Yekaterina Petrovna became my song, and she was stuck in my head on repeat, and probably would be for the rest of my life.”
“If I could remake myself just to be with you, I would. And God knows I am trying. I know I’ll never be good enough, but I can promise you that I’ll never stop trying. I’ll give you everything, and if you want more— I’ll find a way to give you more. Be mine, because if you don’t want it, it doesn’t count.”
LIKE, HELLO?!?!? 🥹😩💘
The second half of the book was significantly darker, unpolished and not romanticised at all. No more sunshines and rainbows, just cold, hard truth, sadness and pain. It left an unsettling sensation slithering down my spine and was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Whether that’s good or bad? I honestly don’t know. Overall, this was a unique read, and I doubt I will ever encounter anything like it. But I would be lying if I said I enjoyed the whole thing.

This book had a lot of potential but didn’t quite deliver. Sometimes the scenes seemed randomly put together and that made the reading experience not as smooth as it could’ve been.

I had to take a bit before writing my review because I was so annoyed with this book. This was a tik tok rec for me and I should have just scrolled on or at least listened to the other negative reviews because I went into this with high hopes and was left underwhelmed— the storyline overall could have really went somewhere but the writing was really bad so it kind of ruined the whole thing

oh. my. god.
where do i even start? actually i don't think i even have the words to describe my feelings about this book.
SUCH a unique concept and i loved the setting - bratva but done in a totally different way, set in the 90s, the writing is so fresh and real that i literally felt like i was there in post soviet russia experiencing vitali myself. I love the insight we got into russian culture and life especially as a working class family, it was just so raw and gritty but extremely well written.
i liked katya as a heroine - she was strong willed but not so much that she didn't accept all the financial spoils that came with being with vitali - and i love that in the epilogue she admitted she's not a good person but she chose HIM!
another book where i have a soul tying attachment to side characters -
- Mama who was so well characterised but had her flaws too (like in the epilogue where katya says their relationship was never the same - but surely Mama knows life would have been so so bad if they stayed??? Like I know he caused the power blackout but vitali saved you from freezing to death!!!) Classic example of the mum who enjoys the money with closed eyes but holds judgement at the wrong times. But she was also SO endearing and warm in her own way and i loved her.
- Misha OMG what to even say about this loyal teddy bear he was absolutely brilliant and i love the relationship that developed between him and Katya. Another extremely well developed character, at the beginning of the book I'd never have thought he'd turn into someone so important to the love story but by the end i was soooo grateful he was mentioned in the epilogue
- Elena obviously i kind of gathered how she'd end up but it was still sad and i like how she came through as a hallucination one last time to help katya
VITALI KONSTANTINOV OMG MY MAN MY MAN MY MAN!!!!!!! Literally had me kicking my feet blushing giggling with his romantic gestures and his air of authority but I love how katya didn't take anything lying down either. She was not afraid to go drop herself in dangerous situations whilst he was off on a jolly and yes she was a bit stupid sometimes but at least she was BRAVE and had misha as her bestie.
I was getting a bit worried we wouldn't get Vitali's point of view but when we eventually did later on in the book .... damn proper psycho and definitely gave a different insight into him than what we saw from katya's POV but i know I'm fucked up cos his psychopathy and broken crazy soul actually just made me love him more. I love that Katya didn't try to fix him but she learnt to ACCEPT him once he was able to let her in.
The plot was incredible, I was constantly guessing and on my toes especially in the final 20% of the book. There were so many lines where my heart dropped to my feet and honestly it should be illegal for that to happen so many times in one book LMAO. One of the big ones being when she said she never became Mrs Konstantinova .... I genuinely started second guessing my man Vitali thinking does he really not marry her? Or do they not end up together in a happy ending because if that's the case I would lose my shit and cry myself into next year. And also when the "delivery" happened OMG what a plot twist that shook me. How can one author come up with so many incredible plot points to keep me going??!?!?
I was also absolutely terrified at 97% because they weren't together in the escape and it almost seemed like he was letting her go - but the author did not let me down and I got my happy ending tied in a neat little bow 😭❤️
My only minor gripes with the book - there were quite a few ominous anticipatory sentences foreshadowing certain bad events and plot points in the book which kind of took away from it. Like I didn't really like that what happened at Elit was foreshadowed cos it kind of reduced the emotional impact since I knew something was going to happen. Another minor teeny weeny criticism is I wish there had been a bit more sex scenes - there was so much sexual tension and obviously you find out why Vitali was not allowing any action to happen between them but 1 or 2 more sex scenes would have rounded the book off I think.
I am going to be chasing the high I got from reading this book for SO long and i genuinely don't think that any books can compare to this - its so so different and special compared to your usual bratva books and I feel so grateful to have experienced it!

“It takes strength to create something beautiful.”
Daaaaaang. Okay. All right. I am seated for all of this author’s next books.
This was so good!! And I genuinely enjoyed the endnote after each chapter explaining what the Russian words meant and providing context for life in 1990s Russia. As a history buff, I really appreciated them! So fascinating!
I gotta say - I’m legit shook by how dark this got. I’ve read quite a few ‘Mafia romances’ - and I watched Sons of Anarchy and The Sopranos and Eastern Promises - but oof. Some of these scenes were graphic. I don’t think I’ve had so visceral a reaction since THAT scene in Vikings. Which … IYKYK.
Really puts it in people’s minds that there are monsters in the shadows. Of course, in reality, monsters don’t need shadows. He’s right there, in the open.
I loved how the author framed and presented both characters. They were just a fascinating pair, together and apart. More obsessive and toxic and ride or die than Cathy and Heathcliff, I’ll say that. But then, I feel like these two were soulmates in a way Cathy and Heathcliff never were. These two want each other and don’t want to touch anyone else ever. So, like, they are absolutely ride or die.
“Because I can’t be friends with you. I can’t fucking be friends with you—because I am who I am—and there is something deeply wrong with me—but it didn’t stop me from being in love with you from the second I saw you. From knowing that I’ll be in love with you until my last day on Earth. Deeply, world-shatteringly in love with you. You want to know how long? Do you?”
But also, okay, so like Vitali is COMPLETELY UNHINGED. I’ve read obsessive, yearning, full on cray-cray MCs in contemporary and fantasy romance before, but I’m pretty sure he just snatched every crown of madness. Oh boy.
I absolutely rooted for Katya. Her life was ROUGH. The descriptions of the blackouts, the pay withholding, the creeps, the cold, taking care of her family - I just wanted to hug and protect her.
But like … despite how absolutely insane Vitali was for 97% of the book - he was adorable with Maxim - I was still rooting for them. GAH. Toxic? Yes. Insane? Yes. Therapy stat? Yes yes 1000x time yes. And yet … I loved them.
Can’t wait for this author’s next one!

"That’s how it was until I saw her.
And then Yekaterina Petrovna became my song, and she was stuck in my head on repeat, and probably would be for the rest of my life."
Holy shit, so many red flags and the girl chose to be blind. Like girl, if your country's economy is collapsing and then you meet a guy who gives you a gold necklace and expensive things you probably can't find anywhere, then you must realize that there's something seriously wrong with his income. But hey, I'll probably be blind as well,I love money.
I didn't realize how insane the mmc is until I read his pov. Everything he does is for her. The plot twist made my jaw drop a few times. He's crazy but I love crazy anyway so this is such a fun experience!!

What an incredible book. I absolutely loved it from start to finish.
One of my favorite aspects was getting a glimpse into Russia in the 1990s. I found that part of the story fascinating, and it felt like I was learning about the country’s history and culture while reading. I also really appreciated that Alina Dobrova included explanations at the end of the chapters about certain Russian customs, historical events, and cultural references. It added so much depth to the story and helped me understand the setting and the characters even better.
The relationship between Vitali and Katya completely captivated me. Vitali is a psychopath, shaped by an unimaginably traumatic childhood, and throughout the book he commits truly horrific acts. Watching Katya slowly uncover who he really is, yet still choose to stay with him and accept every part of him, made for such a complex and compelling relationship. In real life, I don’t think those would have been the right choices, considering the dangerous and traumatic situations she ends up in because of him. But within the story, their love felt incredibly deep and genuine, and I found myself completely invested in their relationship.
I also loved all the side characters.
Overall, Kotik was emotional, gripping, dark and unforgettable. The historical setting, the cultural insights, and the deeply complex characters made this a book I won’t forget anytime soon. An easy five stars from me.
I want to add: it’s a couple of hours later sinds I finished this book, and im really experiencing a book hangover from this book. Wish I could read it again for the first time.

I never thought I’d say this about a mafia romance, but I genuinely feel smarter after reading this book.
The imagery was incredible, it’s set in post-soviet Russia and the author is Russian herself so had so much insight to give. I fear no other mafia romance can compare when it comes to realism and research.
As it’s set after the fall of communism, the fmc and her family are living on the brink of poverty. Then she meets the mmc, who is in the Bratva and wants to protect and provide for her, except with this comes a whole new level of danger.
I can’t tell you enough how feral I am for an mmc who appears dangerous and composed, but internally they’re literally bat shit psycho. So imagine my joy when this was literally the mmc.
I loved how much of a slow burn this was. This book makes you wait for that first kiss. There’s a couple of spicy scenes throughout but it’s definitely not as smutty as most mafia books. If anything I wish there had been more.
The only reason this doesn’t hit 5 stars for me is because I think it needs some editing, both with grammatical errors and with cutting out some fluff. Then it would be perfect!

People could not stop recommending this online so I went for it. I do love the setting and the way the author adds in / explains Russian words. I don’t think I was quite prepared for the deep level of obsession. Definitely a level that somewhat kinda works in this book, but in real life you’d be begging to be behind bars 😂 overall, not a bad read!

Holy crap. Where do I even start... I haven't felt this way about a book in so long, nor have I felt compelled to write a review in ages. I literally stayed up all night and lost so much sleep reading this and still had to finish the next day. I felt the angst, the butterflies in my stomach...oh, the butterflies. The beginning of the story especially hit that hit sweet spot for me because I have such a weakness for stoic, intense, and/or unreadable MMCs who Throw in the fact that Ugh, this book hit so many sweet spots for me!!
The setting of post-Soviet 1990s Russia was wonderfully original, immersive, and visceral. I know little about Russian culture, esp from that time period, and even if I didn't know the author's name (provided it's not a pseudonym) I could tell right away that she must have ties there because of how detailed the descriptions were. There's a certain quality of realism and grittiness to the writing. You don't see this style of writing in romance often and I love it. The narrative was set up like a memoir in that the protagonist is telling you the story from the future where she already knows what took place. The book felt so realistic that I actually questioned several times whether this would have a HEA. The whole memoir-like quality to it also lended to that questioning. Spoiler:
I've grown tired of mafia romances because they all read the same to me and I find a lot of the "alpha" dialogue and male POVs to be cringey due to how they're written. There are only a few sprinklings of Vitali's POV here, but as someone who usually prefers female-only POVs in romance (I'm the minority, I know) I would've gladly read more of his because hallelujah!! His POV was NOT cringey and not filled with "Ayyy women throw themselves at me and I can get as much p***y as I want because I'm so alpha! Lemme brag about how many women I sleep with and use slang for genitalia every other word so I sound tough and like a mobster." Y'all get what I mean? When I read those types of POVs I just wanna be like boy please.
One downside was that sometimes the conversations were hard to follow. I don't know how to describe it, but the way some of them were written had me not quite knowing what was being said. I also can't deny I wish there were more spicy scenes, but that's not a problem with the story or writing and just a me thing. :P The ones we did get were great, though. The build-up definitely paid off.
If you're interested in dark mafia romances that stand out from the crowd, I def recommend checking this out. I'm bummed to see this is the author's only book because I love her writing. I look forward to whatever else she puts out!

Oh man, I loved this book so much. And I need to start by saying that I am VERY picky when it comes to mafia romances.
The FMC was hilarious. Did she make some questionable choices? Absolutely. BUT, I think given the situation, her choices were justified.
Which brings me to the background. The story takes place IN Russia in the 90s and as a 90s child, I loved this aspect so so much. (The 90s were the best and I will die on that hill.) However, I did not grow up in Russia, but the author included very short summaries at the end of chapters that may have required an explanation for certain aspects for people who did not grow up in Russia. They were very insightful and not too long that they took away from the actual story.
Now the MMC. There are triggers of insinuated s*xual assault and let’s just say they were not done to our beloved FMC. Vitali had a very tragic backstory that has left him…damaged (to say nicely) and he is navigating how to become the person our FMC wants and needs, but he lacks the social ability to initiate a relationship with her in a way that we would consider normal. Thus, comes in our stalking trope.
My favorite part was the writing. The foreshadowing, the imagery of emotions, the humor, everything was so much fun to read and often read like a thriller.
Oh, and there are only about three or so chapters from the MMC’s POV, but they were some of my favorite chapters by far. The inner workings of Vitali were written so well and it really helped solidify my love of him and his tortured and broken soul.
The only issue I can understand some people having is a rushed ending. However, I think it was appropriate for the story and the genre.
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Possessive/Obsessive MMC
Dark and tragic backgrounds
Mild gore
90’s backdrop
Dual-POV’s
Real historical connections and explanations
A huge thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this. My thoughts and comments are my own.

Did Not Finish
June 2, 2026How I wanted to like this one. I was hooked from the first chapter, but then I found the whole atmosphere incredibly depressing.
The poverty is relentless, the MMC is barely present in the story, and when he does appear, he just pops in, offers a few things, and disappears again. Katya comes across as clueless, which made it difficult for me to connect with her.
Overall, it's very slow-paced, and I'm not even sure there was much of a plot.
Review of advance copy
This book takes place just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Part of the reason I chose to read this was because of the book cover - it showed both the MCs in it (he was leaning over her with a building in the background, but it's changed since then).
The first time Vitali & Katya officially met was on a bus when he broke someone's hand for groping her. The second time was at a party of her best friend's cousin. At the end of the night, he drove her home. Her best friend, Elena, warned her that she had heard he was in the mafia.
Vitali was romantic and sweet on the outside (to Katya), but dominant and controlling underneath it all. He was not as he appeared. And Katya stayed strong for her family, was sweet and a kind soul. I really felt for the challenges they were facing and loved that Vitali stepped in to help. I really loved them as a couple; they fit so well together. Vitali not only showed that he wanted Katya, but also treated her family well; he knew they were important to her. The spice was super hot (I would have loved more scenes!) and descriptive.
I wish the two of them were together more often, as they had so much passion and chemistry that I felt it jump off the pages, but he had to go away so often (due to his job).
I really enjoyed this book and how it portrayed the economic fall and the struggles the people went through after the collapse. Jobs were not easy to find, pay was being withheld, and living day to day was a real challenge.
The ending moved faster than I would have liked, but they did get their HEA, and everything turned out well!!
