Jesper Wung-Sung's short new novel (read in Danish) is the retelling of Martin A. Hansen's Løgneren from the viewpoint of one of the main characters. I'm glad that I reread The Liar before Sandøs rose, because it has been decades since I first encountered this classic during grad school. It's a poetic and melancholy reflection of life on a small Danish island that has been cut off from the outside world by ice. As spring approaches and the ice is breaking up, the narrator observes that the relationships among the island's residents will soon be changed by the arrival of the first boat. Johannes Lye is the solitary school teacher on Sandø, and he is a good example of an unreliable narrator. We never know for certain what brought him to the island, and whether he is in love with his former student Annemarie. Wung-Sung hypothesizes about Annemarie's feelings for Johannes, and what these few days in March were like for her. He also goes a step beyond and projects what her life could have been like after the ice does break up. I admire the way he maintains some of the same tone of Martin A. Hansen's novel, and wonder whether most Danes will agree with his theories about what actually was happening in Løgneren.
