Hi - I'm Sally Green. I'm the author of the real-world/ fantasy Half Bad Trilogy, which is made up of Half Bad, Half Wild and Half Lost. Most people read them in that order but there's always a few who don't. Many people who read them are teenagers but there's a lot who aren't.
I'm currently working on a new series called The Smoke Thieves, which is due to be published in spring 2018 and is definitely fantasy (there will be a map).
I said I'd never write another trilogy after Half Bad but it seems I lied.
I thought it was impossible for me to love Gabriel even more, well I was obviously wrong. Through his sister's point of view, we can see how a loving brother he was, a funny and handsome teenager with a broken heart. And this short story, told from Michèle's diary was so innocent and yet so heartbreaking. I just want to put my arms around Gabriel and protect him from the world. My baby is so precious. (and now we know for sure he's into guys and so I want some Nathan/Gabriel scenes in Half Wilf, I don't care, I just want some. ALRIGHT MRS GREEN? THANK YOU VERY MUCH YOU BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED WRITER.)
Romeo and Juliette the witch style! Q: Sometimes I think the hardest thing about being a witch is not being able to talk about it. (c) Q: It’s just all so wrong. Why shouldn’t we be together? We’re the sane ones. We’re not trying to beat each other up, cut off fingers, or scar faces! (c)
Well if the characters are bored what hope do I have?!
This really was just boring. I didn’t really get what was going on, the world building was non-existent, and it was just dull! It was basically just a load of diary entries, and very little actually happened. Really not impressed.
¡Recomendada!
Oh my god! I just finished reading a dead girl's diary! Her life was so tragic. I fell sorry for her. Her love story was a beauty cross star lover...which had cause unplesent conequences...I really feel bad for her.
This Black and White Witches are sooo stupid. There's no different actually. They still people...
I think what Sally Green wants to point out is our current world situations. It's happening right? Peoples killing each others...it's should stop...what am I talking about?
By the way, Michèle diary was written very beautiful!
P.S.
Why Michèle? Why? At lease you should put a photo of Gabrial as a Black Witch! I'm sure I would smile like a crazy gurl.
Half Bad was one of my favourite books read this year, way back in January and I have been very excited for the sequel, Half Wild, coming in March 2015 to a bookshop near you, so when I spotted this “prequel” short story featuring Gabriel and his sister I was very pleased. As a way to wet your appetite for the new book this worked really well.
Told in Diary form, Michele talks about losing her mother, running away to Florida and attempting to settle into a new community. Even here though, the White Witch/Black Witch divide is dangerously close and when Michele meets Sam there are problems ahead for both of them.
I actually found this to be quite an emotional tale considering its short length – Ms Green manages to pack a lot in there without making it over complicated and it flows along beautifully as we read a young girl’s thoughts as she falls in love, realises the chasm that exists between people and tries her best to make it work anyway. The mythology of the “Half Bad” world is solidified here, a different perspective from that of Nathan as we watch Michele grow up in a world where love and loyalty can often be at odds.
The ending floored me, a real emotional tug on the heartstrings and gosh I am now VERY impatient for Half Wild – I want more from this eclectic and well imagined universe as soon as possible. This was a perfect teaser and just confirms my original feeling that this is going to be one of my favourite YA series ever. Also my love for Gabriel is complete. More Gabriel please.
MOTHER OF GOD!?!?
The great thing about this short prequel is that we learn more about Gabriel's history. We don't get much of his back story in Half Bad so it was really interesting to learn more about him.
Half Lies is told through diary entries by Gabriel's sister Michele. It details the death of their mother, their flee to Florida, Gabriel discovering his Gift and how he accidentally gets stuck as a fain and Michele's love affair with a White Witch which leads to her murder.
I loved the relationship between Gabriel and Michele. You can tell that they were really close siblings who looked out for each other. Gabriel losing his mother and his sister in such a short time also explains Gabriel's protectiveness over Nathan in Half Bad; he doesn't want to lose someone else he cares about.
I recommend you read this after having read Half Bad in order to appreciate the details more.
This reads like a 16-year-old's diary - in the best way. The straight-forward and simple writing adds to the experience of only getting a glimpse at the life happening off-screen. Michèle is a wonderful and heartwarming character.
I didn't know I could love Gabriele even more than I already do.
Truth be told, this was quite boring but I'm still really glad to know more about my favourite character's backstory. It's told as a diary written by Gabriele's dead sister Michele, about how she ended up getting killed and what was going on with their family before that. So it was sad and I liked it a lot.
