James Harper can be a bit wordy, in his earlier books, but hardly ever do I want to put one of his books down. He has well written, intriguing story lines, interesting characters and immersing twists, misdirection and a good pace. Main source: The author.
Angel and Kincade Murder Mysteries: BLOOD RUNS COLD, #8 - A bit of a weird beginning with the dialog between Angel and Kincade, and a slow start but the story did gain in interest and intrigue. I do like the "healing" that took place in the end. 4*
THE REVENANT, #1 - This new series is set in England and Padre was a priest. Source: The author. 4*
OLD EVIL, #2 - Plenty of secrets and twists. 5*
FORSAKEN, #3 - Intense. So unfair, the world is and I do not blame the actions because of the causes. Too many happenings created the consequences, and all actually lose. Tragic. 5*
JUSTICE LIES BLEEDING, #4 - Rather sad what happens to Amos, and other characters, and makes for interesting detective work. Bit more family involvement along with more trust between A and K. 4*
THE UNQUIET DEAD, #5 - Being wordy throughout the story with a bit of slowness here and there did not take away from the great characters and interesting story lines along with good endings, both professional and private for the Padre. I always enjoy the unspoken comments. Source: The author. 4*
LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER, #6 - I had a hard time reading this book. The dialog seemed off as well as the characters. The pace is slow and the story lines did not interest me. An average read this time. 3*
THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, #7 - The story lines are a good blending of the new with the continuous ones. Intriguing. Good pace. 5*
Once again, James Harper has created an engrossing story as told through the eyes of some of the most realistic, fully developed characters in novels today. Their personalities and voices are distinct, and we continually see how the case shapes them, as well as how their life experiences effect how they approach the case. If that sounds too analytical and like a book club take on the writing, never fear because you can simply sit back and enjoy the story. No deep analysis needed. The characters will bloom into full people before your eyes. This is the 8th book in the series and yes, I have devoured them all. It's not entirely necessary to start at the beginning since there are brief recaps of important points. But it would still make a bit more sense, and it's such an enjoyable series I would recommend doing yourself a favor and starting with book #1. But if that's not feasible, start here. You can always go back to the beginning later. I did receive an ARC at no cost to me, but this is my honest opinion. Very highly recommended.
When human remains are discovered in a forest, it is learnt that they have been there for 12 years. Subsequently, DI Angel’s team work out that the victim is Adam Keller and that he was involved in a traffic accident some miles away. How did he get buried in the forest? And who buried him? And why wasn’t the death reported when it occurred? These are all good questions that Angel’s team work to slowly uncover the answers for with a few twists along the way. This is the latest installment in the Angel and Kincade murder mysteries. With a DI who is still haunted by events in his past, and a DS who used to be a DI wondering whether she can safely return to the Met, this cast of characters has a familiar feel from the earlier books in the series. It’s a well-constructed story, but I felt that the ending was unresolved. Will there be a follow up in a later story? In my opinion, the story earned 4.5 stars out of 5.
Another entertaining and enjoyable, well constructed jigsaw of plots exploring how actions have consequences. For avid readers of the series you'll be pleased to know that the usual characters both domestic and foreign are all involved though I was disappointed that the harmonica didn't appear till half way through the book!
A plot full of bubbling anger, emotional stress and blackmail forcing characters to select the better of several disastrous options and a thoroughly enjoyable ending which still leaves readers with a bit of a cliffhanger.
Yes, I know I've not mentioned details of the plot but I'm sure others will though I can assure you that the novel's worth reading and I'm glad I gradually got to know the irreverent bunch earlier in the series.
James Harper writes a great police procedural mystery. There’s another compelling case for DI Angel and DS Kincade. There’s a cold case to re-examine. And a new one that seems to tie in with the cold case. Will justice finally be achieved? Meanwhile the lives of the main characters are complicated, and there are developments. Is all as it seems? What decisions will be made? Take note as they spill over into yet another book in this gripping and intriguing series. NB. As always, with any series, it is best to start at the beginning and read the books in order to follow the development of the characters, and their individual storylines. There is a very strong overarching storyline of the main characters in this series.
If you love murder mystery then you need to read James Harper's books. They are fantastic and this one is no exception. Once again the author kept me glued to the pages while I tried to work "who dunnit!". I have been following James Harper since the Evan Buckley series and I absolutely love his style of detailed writing. Not to be missed!! I haven't gone into detail about the book, there are plenty of other comments to read. Just know you will not be disappointed. If you're new to James Harper it is relevant to start from book 1 in this series so that you can read the background of the main characters and how they develop through the series. I received a free copy of this book and I voluntarily leave this honest review.
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story begins with the depiction of a incident that Angel and his team get involved in 12 years after it happened when Boones are discovered. The identity of the victim is made based on medical tags found with the body. Using this information the team digs further to learn about the person's life. Following clues they start talking to people that the victim knew and eventually lay out a timeline of what happened and then began to focus who the killer might be.
The story keeps your interest right till the end. In addition discover what two issues Angel had to consider while this was going on. The continuation of the series was well done and this book is well worth the read, don't miss out!
The Angel & Kincade series is one of my all time favourites. I love the way James Harper writes these crime stories, whilst seamlessly weaving in side stories relating to the characters involved.
What makes this series so special for me is this dynamic between Angel & Kincade, which I find incredibly interesting and enjoyable to read. There is a perfect balance between the humour/banter between the characters, and the gloominess of the murders. I especially liked the ambiguous ending of this book, in relation to the murder investigation the characters deal with in this story, but also in respect of things happening in their personal lives.
Blood Runs Cold is an engrossing story where a very thin line between right or wrong might be or is crossed by those who have to uphold the law. Angel and Kincade are investigating how Adam was killed and why, who was behind such a crime and why the man involved in the first accident had died in another one. The team is under pressure, Angel is questioning his values and actions because of his involvement in seeking justice for the death of his wife. Flawed characters (that could be real) leading a story that is too near the reality we live. The book is a great addition to the series and I highly recommend it! I thank Mr. Harper for this ARC.
Blood Runs Cold by James Harper is another book in this series that will have you turning pages and guessing if the crime will be solved. There are also several subplots throughout the series that involve the characters and their interaction with the others members of the team and even outsiders. So when you read this story, there is more to it than just solving a crime! Their personal lives and other factors will keep you reading and wanting more!
I received an advance copy of this book and I always review every book that I read. I recommend this one.
Well, I couldn't put it down! Great story of some remains being found and the complicated investigation, into what happened 12 years ago.
Threats, lies, deceit and a very sleazy enforcer, circle around the only witness, who has amnesia - a convenient part of the plan or a truth that is waiting to surface...
The four female survivors of this complex plan, have a plan of their own but will it have fatal consequences - fingers crossed...
Totally had me hooked, from the first page. Brilliant writing James, keep them coming...
Another great Angel and Kincade mystery with a body in a shallow grave to get them started on their quest for the truth.
As the investigation unfolds it appears the victim disappeared 12 years previously. This brings our Detectives into the orbit of a powerful man who has a reputation to protect.
Once again a well written story with great entertainment value.
Scare tactics and murder, can you catch me? Who knows? Twists, turns, the rollercoaster of who did what, can you prove it, will it hold up in court, will anyone show any accountability?
Everything the detectives did seemed to go nowhere. Deduction allowed them to determine what happened and, with a little help from someone, who did what. That isn't enough to bring legal justice. I was really surprised at the conclusion. I wasn't expecting it. It is a good read.
"I'm a huge fan of Harper's novels—he writes well and keeps you guessing. This series surprised me; I didn't expect to love it as much, but it hooked me after the first book or two. Start at the beginning to follow the story. The books feature real, character-driven stories with well-drawn people, especially the annoying ones. Two of the women I swear I know—a true testament to Harper's talent.
You’ll love this one. A totally different slant on the police and crime resolution. The two DC’s still have their banter sessions as does the DCI and the DS. It feels real and the ending was nothing like I anticipated. Max is also caught in a cleft stick situation with Balan and Stuart which makes things very interesting.
Another five Star review for my crime fighting family of the local cop shop. Angel finds it hard to concentrate on a murder that's just bones cause Kincade has the go ahead to return to her old job in London. Fast paced, lost secrets, Death threats what can be done? Clear your calendar when you start reading this story.
Blood Runs Cold. Max and Cat get involved in a 12 year old cold case when a body is found in the woods. As they dig back into the case it gets more complicated but as the delves further into the past the facts become clear. Another in the Angel and Kincade series, they get better every time.
Blood Runs Cold James Harper. Find your comfy chair and buckle up because this is a roller coaster of a read. Emotion’s are running high with Angle and Kincade as she tries to decide whether to go back to London and with a cold case murder to solve this will keep you wanting more.
A body buried in the forest just inside the jurisdiction for Angel and Kincade to get the cold case of 12 years old. This page turner kept me reading until the conclusion. Great series of detective work.
James Harper loosened the restraints on our favorite characters and released them onto the pages of Blood Runs Cold. Angel and Kincade, along with the rest of the team, uncovered mysteries and plots that will be untangled before Book 8 ends. This is the novel you can't say no to!
This is a really good book to read and that is why I gave it five stars. The characters n the book are good to read about. If you have not read this book yet,you should.James Harper Books are good to read. Tiffany
I found this story interesting of how the killer was motivated by power and money. A murder happened 12years ago, buried in a shallow grace. With med tag hidden under shirt sleeve, given them a name. Now to find out the why he was murdered. I enjoy this author's book and recommend them.
This book really starts to dig into the life of Angel outside of being a policeman. The discovered body and subsequent case is almost secondary to the trials Max is facing in his 'other life'. A great book, well written and just the right amount of mystery to keep you guessing.
I really enjoyed this, the plots are good but for me the main characters and the way the relationships have grown and developed between them that keeps me coming back Can't wait for the next one
WOW the third book is really going to surprise you!! Twist and turns and surprises! I really enjoyed the trilogy this last book I did not want to put down!
