Hazel and her husband stopped being separate people years ago. They live their happy life in the always crowded, mostly sunny, and sometimes sweltering city of LA. Though they haven’t managed it yet, plans are afoot to add a kitty to the household, thereby giving the allergist fits.

Hazel has been writing full-time for several years, with some traditionally published work in other genres. But it’s her indie-published romance that fuels the creative fire. It turns out writing isn’t a job, it’s an obsession.

When you can pry Hazel’s fingers from the laptop, you’ll find her: on the elliptical watching a documentary, indulging her audiobook habit, or spending quality time with Candy Crush. Although she’s vegan, she’s a disaster in the kitchen. Luckily, potato chips and pinot noir come ready-made.

Witches, Warlocks and almost steamy, sexual chemistry that melts off the very first pages, Hazel Hunter’s Dominic is a far too short tale of a young witch in hiding with a special ability and warlock sent to find her.

Hazel Hunter has a brilliant gift for the paranormal genre, and clearly has the talent to create MORE intrigue and more plot in this tale. She lights on many fabulously worthwhile subplots and directions, but in deciding to keep her work shorter, didn’t quite showcase her ability to its best.
Flowing with not quite heat-branded sex, instant romance and two people unaware that she is the target he searches for, Dominic DOES make for a quick and light read, kind of like the delicious appetizer to a promised entrée.

This book just didn't work for me. It started out just fine and I enjoyed the beginning of the story until they go back to her place and have sex. Now I don't mind quick sex but they don't have I just met you up against the wall sex they have over the top "emotional" making love. The biggest issue I had with this book though was the way the dialogue was written. I get that Dominic is 500 years old but he talks like he's still in the past. Not only that but it's stilted and well just awkward. Dominic is supposed to be an Alpha male but I just found him kind of sappy and well a little pathetic. Sophia I just didn't like and I didn't understand. Just because the author tells me she can't trust anyone and doesn't want to be involved doesn't mean I just accept it. I never felt like we understood why Sophia would push Dominic away after all she admitted how much she cared about him and how he made her felt safe so why she "freaked out" and pushed him away just wasn't clear. Plus I thought her reaction was just a bit too dramatic

Witches and Warlocks!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎
Character development: ☹️☺️😊🥰

The heroine: Sophia - she lives in Milwaukee in an apartment with her cat. She has the ability to hide herself in the shadows so nobody can see her. She uses that ability in her job working for a private investigator. Though her ability doesn’t work if someone gets close enough to touch her. One night she is hiding in an alley, waiting for a cheating husband to come out on the balcony of his mistresses’ apartment so she can get some pictures of them. However, someone bumps into her right when the two of them are out in the open and she gets caught in the act by the man. A strange man saves her from being hit.

The Hero: Dominic - he was born in Italy over 500 years ago and is immortal. He is also a warlock. He works for Magus Corp. His current assignment is to look for a witch in Milwaukee Wisconsin. His friend gave him a spelled crystal which should glow brighter the nearer he gets to her. Though he thinks it might be on the fritz. The crystal got him to Milwaukee, but even since he arrived it has been alternately glowing and not glowing for a few minutes at a time. So, he decides to call it a night when he hears a scuffle in a nearby alley and saves a girl from what he thinks is a mugger.

The story: Sophia lets Dominic help her home after she is attacked, since she has a sprained ankle. The two are obviously attracted to each other, and Sophia decides to shed her usual reticence and hook up with the blonde hottie. Though in the morning, she gets nervous and hides until he leaves her place. Both Dominic and Sophia feel something more for each other than just a one-night stand, but neither of them understands their quick feelings for each other and they realize that they don’t really know each other.

I liked the story of Dominic searching for Sophia but not realizing that Sophia is the girl he is looking for. Though I wished there was a bit more background information earlier on about what the Magus Corps were and what they wanted with Sophia. There was also some craziness when Dominic found out the Templars were also in town. Apparently, there is a long-standing war between the Magus Corps and the Templars, though that wasn’t explained very well either.

This is the second book I've read from the 'Her Warlock' protector series. The other title, Hugh, is only available via Ms. Hunter's mailing list. Nicely creative and different, the story features an alpha-male warlock seeking to locate and protect a newly emerged witch. In this universe, Wiccans are magic users, but not inherently good or bad. They live in secret and are in constant danger from the Templars. I keep bumping on Templars as the bad guys. The Knights Templar were crusaders and fierce warriors, but not witch/heretic hunters. So that's a distraction. That said, the alpha male warlocks and courageous witches in these novels are great together and the steam factor high. Each of the books focuses on a specific couple and can be read as a standalone.

Ehh, this is a really, really rough read. I don't mind rough seas, but I want to be on a dependable, sturdy boat for it, not a blow up dingy.

Rough Seas In A Dingy :/

The story starts fine enough with the alley incident.

But, then the author immediately takes the MCs into this tender, sickly sweet, mushy 'are you okay, & emotional sex scene before we even get FIVE% into the book. The characters literally meet, walk to her apartment, and five minutes later are MAKING LOVE like a virginal newlywed couple on their wedding night would. Now ^THAT^ is putting the very rough seas of insta love in a blow up dingy!

She disappears. He's dumbfounded. They individually poetically wax for 3% before finding each other again, which brings us to the next problem with this book...

Who The Fuck Talks Like That?

He may be 500 years old, but she's not! Plus, this is set in current time & if anyone talked the way these two do, they'd be tagged for admission to a mental health facility! Examples...

• "Have me, take me."

• "As my lady wishes"

• "I don't know what you are thinking right now. Can you tell me?"

•"I believe in the privacy of my lovers" (he said "primly")

• "You know that I used to be Italian, right?" Lmao @this one... How does one stop being Italian? Just asking?!?

The dialogue is awkward, flows horribly, is cut off by multiple paragraphs of narrative, and often feels like it's just randomly inserted inside a scene being told to the reader.

Take 8% as an example....(scene set up they had sex after knowing each other five minutes. The next am she disappears. A weekly later, they run into each other):

"It's you"

"It is....Sophia....I... What did I do?"

"What do you mean?"

"When I left, you were gone. I..I would like to know if I did something that offended you, that hurt you."

"No! I mean, no, I wasn't...it wasn't that Dominic."

"Was it simple disinterest then? That would surprise me, but I could understand it...."

"It wasn't disinterest either. I'm tired. I'm just...so, so tired."

"What honey? What's made you so tired."

"Being without you. I don't want to be without you."

"You won't be. You won't be."

Everything about the convos thus far are weird like this one, from timing, word choice, subject matter, etc, it's all just wrong! And, to add to the weirdness, it's cut up by paragraph after paragraph of musing narrative.

Not The Sharpest Tool In The Shed

description

She can make herself disappear at will. Yet, he tells her he is 500 years old and her reaction is:

"How... how can you expect me to believe this?"

I'm sorry, but yeah, she's just a fucking moron?!?

And that, folks, is my clue to exit the few shreds that's left of this sinking dingy!

An almost OK read..

I like sex in my books but I didn’t like the sex in this one. Dominic and Sophia said the stupidest things to each other during their sex scenes. And it was constant. AND then they thanked each other? Well, she thanked him twice. Really? As interesting as this book is I can’t see myself moving forward with the other books. If this author wrote such nonsense in this book she’s done it in the rest, too.

And then I ran across this: “he swept her up in his arms. She was short, but far from light.” Again, Really? A short overweight chick catching the eye of a gorgeous Adonis? Not. Going. To. Happen! And I don’t know why authors want to write such BS. If you’re going to make her too plain, too plump, too whatever, don’t make him god-like. Geez!

It was cool that Sophia could become invisible but that's about all the story had going for it. Dominic, for all his bravery and strength, was kinda love-sick from the beginning. And I don't like love-sick from anyone.

The sex was ok but there wasn’t a bit of sexual tension. No wanting, no desire, no need, no nothing. Just 2 sex scenes in the book. Makes for boring sex no matter how many scenes there are. No sexual tension = lousy sex. IMO

This book had something of a good premise, but it just wasn't fulfilled. Dominic, an immortal warlock, is sent to find Sophia who has a gift of making herself invisible. They meet, have very hot, steamy sex, fall in love but then when Dominic offers her his protection, she rejects him. I think it started well, but the story seemed to get sillier as it went on. It isn't often that I say that a book could have been longer, but I think if the idea and the story had been expanded a bit, then the two main sex scenes wouldn't have felt so arbitrary and a great deal more could have been done with it. It was a very light, unchallenging read but I wouldn't read on.

Take one brave and honorable warrior, mix with one recovering witchling, add a dangerous enemy stalker and romance.Shake and stir. We THINK we have the situation under control until denial no longer works for us, but that realization puts us on the road to healing. Thanks for the happy ending.

This is the first Sci-Fi type of book I've read from HH. It was rather good. Can't wait to start reading the next one. I love all her stories so far. I can really get into the characters and feel their emotions! Just love them and the world building is super! So believable.

Meh... it wasn't awful, but it wasn't good either; I only read it because it was a free download. Everything happened way too fast for the romance to be even slightly believable (insta-love warning!) and I found myself scoffing/laughing during their intimate moments and scenes.

Didn't like it sorry

I'm sure there are people out there that like this story unfortunately I'm not 1 of them. I found it really boring. I will admit there were parts I thought were good but the other all story just didn't do anything for me sorry.

This must be earlier work by this author. The character development isn't as good and the story is still a little muddled. I'm hoping it will be cleared up as I read the series.

I might have rated it 4 stars if not for some plot holes. Like, Dominic says, "The daggers you saw -- they've saved my life more than once," but she never told him that she saw his daggers, nor did she tell him that she had overhead his phone conversation. When he rushes in to rescue her, he says, "When you decide that you want a guy back, you really don't mess around." But in fact when did she ever say she wanted him back? She didn't summon him back using the charm and nothing in the story said she had indicated a change of heart where he was concerned.

I would like to know how Templars recognise or find witches and warlocks. Dominic has his bespelled crystal to help locate Sophia, but what do the Templars have? How could the Templar have mistaken his quarry the first time? As this is the first book of the series, I expected it to set things up much more clearly for the rest of the series.

As it's a novella, you have Dominic and Sophia falling for each other pretty fast, and on Dominic's part, he also falls pretty hard. It's hard to imagine him as a 500-year-old battle-hardened warlock when he's so gentle and beseeching with Sophia. He won't force her to come with him and join a coven, even if it's for her own safety; but he pleads with her to do so. I kind of like it and don't like it at the same time. I liked that he respected her wishes, but was not sure I liked seeing him beg.

I think the story needed to be longer because we needed to see Sophia heal from the wounds of the past. She feels safest when alone and invisible, and this isn't something that can be overcome so quickly. I think with a little more meat and better continuity in the plot, this could have become a 5-star story.

My Review: ✰✰✰✰

Dominic and Sophia did not make for a fun book to read. Their story was much too sad, both of them. Four years ago, a close friend of Sophia’s was killed in Phoenix. Since then she’s been hiding, using her ability to simply fade into the scenery, to become invisible. So working as a private investigator for Brent in his small private investigation company is perfect for her.

The Magus Corps has been trying to find her since the incident in Phoenix, tracking her with a crystal device that senses her magic when she uses it. Dominic is the one tracking her. The Magus Corps tries to gather up all witches as they awaken to protect them, sort of bringing them into the fold. Sophia doesn’t even know what she is. She has never been trained in the use of her power.

The Templars are also looking for Sophia. And it wasn’t too tough to figure out who their representative was. It was curious as to why he didn’t move to take her before the Magus Corps arrived on site though. Was he just waiting for the moment to do the most damage?

The sex was steaming hot. The violence was brief but rough. The storyline was good. This is the second one in this series that I’ve read and the writing is consistently good. I’m looking forward to reading more of this series. I recommend this author’s books. I’d go so far as to say any of her series would be a good bet.

All in all it was disappointing since the premise was very interesting and the book failed to deliver.

There was barely any world building or character development, particularly for the main leads which is bad, as in I couldn't really relate to either of them. Sofia, the main female lead starts with something dark in her past that goes really nowhere, flopping instead of landing. Dominic, the main male lead was a bit better in this, the easiest to connect to and was quite intriguing but the book doesn't develop him, there's not much behind him and his reasoning so I constantly felt his actions were either wrong or ridiculous.

From the beginning you're thrown in a world with the Magus Corps, wiccans, warlocks, templars, etc., but no answers, not much information to connect to it, to believe in it.

After reading the series immortal highlanders, I decided to have a look on Hazel Hunter other works.
It is a fast paced read with a good plot, witches, warlords and templars knights.
And the more time passed, the more I liked Dominic. He is a warlock, has seen and done lot of things, but he remains a good man who cares for the others.
And once he felt for Sophia, he will do anything for her.
A perfect book boyfriend.
While I had problems to warm up for Sophia, yes, she has a traumatic past, but she appears as a kind of a coward, preferring to hide instead to take risk. And even as Dominic offers her the world on a plate, she runs always as she always does. Her complete switcheroo at the end who a little hard to understand.

I enjoyed Dominic, but I felt that it was far too short.
I've enjoyed Hazel's Silver Wood Coven series tremendously, and the installments are about the same page count. That series continues to build continuously onto the plot line though, giving the characters room for growth. When I finished Dominic, I felt like I didn't really know the characters. There's a lot of potential here, but 100 pages isn't enough to do Sophia or Dominic justice as far as character development goes.
I have the entire boxed set of 7 books, and plan on finishing them, but I really do prefer her "Coven" series to what I have seen so far.

4.8 stars - Great short story 😁

I finished it in a day and I really enjoyed it. I would have loved it as a full length novel, but was satisfied with the storyline.

I have just gone through a looooong string of short stories that left me wanting --- bad grammer, spelling, (great plots, but bad execution), and lacking details and realism.
This book had almost NONE of those problems (one or two grammer issues, but acceptable) and I was satisfied with the quick flow of the story.
I will definitely check out more of Hazel Hunter's books in the future

I really enjoyed this.

I chose four stars because this story spoke to the softer part of my heart. I wished for the ability to 'disappear' many times. Never got it. But to imagine how it felt to be Sophia, to truly be seen by Dominic that was easy. Another book boyfriend to add to my harem.

Great book. I definitely recomend!

Warlocks, Witches and Templars. A great start to a new series.
A new concept for me. Sophia has been hiding her magical powers since her parents death. Dominic is a powerful Warlock and a captain of the Magus Corp.
The Templars must kill all Witches and Warlocks!
I forgot to mention the hot love 💘 !
