My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

“Maybe what he’d felt was a spark that could start a good-sized fire and, boy oh boy, he’d love to try out that tantra chair.”

“Vivian was scared and very, very excited. She didn’t really understand what was going on, but she was pretty sure she liked it.”

“You were all I wanted. Without you, my life doesn’t mean anything.”

“With you? Forever’s not long enough.”

My Review:

I admire and adore Deanndra Hall, she provides me with some of my favorite stories and never fails to deliver my preferred type of well written smut. I love her characters and could not have been more pleased in continuing on with the epic saga of Walters clan and their extended family... as I am totally smitten with this eclectic bunch. As always, her story line for One Simple Mistake pulled me in early and kept me interested and entertained. I was fanning myself, gasping, and humming with satisfaction until 75% into the story when all hell broke loose and she broke my heart. And that wasn’t all, at 80% the nightmare was further deepened, and a downward spiral continued for quite some time… I was more than troubled… I cursed one of my favorite authors of all time and called her every foul name I could think of, and even invented a few in her honor. But silly me, I should have had more faith. No spoilers here, but she provided a peaceful and tidy ending for all parties. But the dispatch is clear, that type of “simple mistake” could easily happen with lasting effects and wipe out months and even years of ground work. Message received. All is right in my world again. Sigh – red faced with embarrassment - my sincere apologies... please delete those obscene notes I left for you Ms. Hall…

This is a spin off from the Love Under Construction series. I highly recommend you read that entire series first, not only because it is such a good series but because you will have a lot of back story to help you follow along with this one. Doug is lonely, he doesn’t know how lonely until he sees Vivian at a Walter’s family gathering. Vivian sees Doug and thinks there is no way he would ever be interested in her, she thinks she is fat and worthless, plus he is a Dominant and she is as plain as vanilla ice cream. Doug and Viv start off slow, they have both been hurt before and they both have up walls. After a while, things are finally going great, they have both gotten pasted their issues, they have confessed their feelings to each other and they are blissfully happy. That is until one slip of the tongue stops everything. Changes everything.
Characters: The characters were well written and believable. My only issue was sometimes the dialogue between Viv and Doug seemed childish. I know Viv has issues with self-esteem and is very naïve but at times the dialogue actually made her seem like she was a little slow.
Sex: yes
Religious: no
Would I recommend to others: yes
More than one book in the series: yes
Genre: Romance, light BDSM
Would I read more by this author: yes

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Deanndra Hall has some sort of magical ability that when she puts words on paper they are infused with the emotion she puts behind them. One Simple Mistake is a story about two people who long for a family and when just when its within their grasp, they do something to muck it up.

Doug and Vivian both have had a run of bad luck when it comes to love. Seeing what they can't have makes them hold on to the dream even harder. When they give each other a chance for happiness, will their doubts, fears and insecurities pull them apart?

This book runs the gamut of emotions from blissfully happy to heart wrenching grief, from dispair to contentment.

I can't wait to read the next book in the Citadel series.

What a joy to be back with the Love Under Construction family. I was in familiar and comfortable territory within pages. These characters are not ones that could be easily forgotten, so even though it's been a while, it draws you in as if it were just yesterday. That said, you could read this and enjoy it as a new series. But then, go back and read them all.

As to that mistake ... brilliant idea around which to base a lovely story. It just came and smacked you in the face and wow! Obviously I can't say more, but read it and see what I mean. Add to that the camaraderie shown by the men to Doug, and the love and affection that is given to Viv, and this makes for a good story.

Reviewed for A Wanton Book Lover Blog

One Simple Mistake, Citadel #1 is a spin-off series from Deanndra Hall’s Under Construction series. One Simple Mistake finds Doug at a Walter’s family wedding where he realizes how truly lonely he is. Seeing the woman he thought he was in love with marrying two other men is almost harder than he can deal with. Vivian is the older sister of one of the women married to a Walter’s. Doug thinks Vivian is beautiful with her golden red hair and fair complexion and begins to ask about him. Vivian has not had any luck with men; she has even been left at the altar. Vivian is told that Doug is interested in her; he has been talked up and seems like a nice guy so she agrees. Doug and Vivian soon find themselves in a loving relationship; the only potential issue is that Doug is a Dominant and Vi has never had anything but “vanilla” sex. Luckily, the find a way to work around what each needs and soon find themselves engaged until Doug makes one silly mistake.
As I have never read the Under Construction series, I was somewhat confused the first couple of chapters of the book at the wedding when all those previous characters were mentioned and in the scenes. I was thinking about calling it quits but decided to continue reading and I am truly glad I did. After those first couple of chapters, the book began to focus and Doug and his interest in Vi. I enjoyed reading about the developing relationship between Doug and Vi and how since the cared about each other, made their relationship work even though they had different sexual desires and needs. I thought what they did to make each other happy in the bedroom is a perfect example of two people who love each other working together to make their relationship work with communication and compromising if needed. There were a lot of hot scenes in the One Simple Mistake as well as times where I was tearing up while reading. I enjoyed reading the book and would enjoy reading the next book in the series. Although it might have helped me in the beginning of the book, I don’t feel that it is necessary to have read the series which Citadel is spun-off from, the Under Construction series.

It has been almost 5 months since I last read about the Walters and their extended family and its good to be back, like saying "Hi!" again to a very old friend.

One Simple Mistake is the first book of the Citadel Series, which is a spin off of the Love Under Construction Series-- I suggest that if you want to read this book, read the Love Under Construction Series first. This book is about Vivian, a naive 36 year old who has no self confidence and is working as Tony and Nikki's house helper and Doug, a 28 year old Dom who is working for Tony in the business. Doug meet Vivian in a family gathering and was interested in getting to know her better. Vivian was surprised that a hot guy is interested in her because of what had happened to her in her previous relationships which ended with her getting hurt emotionally. Doug is no different in relationships but he is willing to teach Vivian something she is too shy/scared to do. Little did she know that trying knew things could really change a person. Their relationship blossomed from a very awkward, mostly in Vivian's part, to a passionate and adventerous affair worth reading.

This book is much quicker than the first book, Laying a Foundation of the Love Under Construction Series, but like the first;it was a great read. One thing I do notice though is the age difference. Maybe I'm the type of person who thinks men should be older in the relationship but after reading this book, it turns put that age is really no matter and its all in how one perceives the world. That is what Doug and Vivian's relationship is about for me. I love how Doug helped Vivian and how Doug found his peace ( wanna know what peace it is.. READ THE BOOK). Also, I like the Vivian was trying to go to "unchartted waters" for Doug and how she still remained sweet and beautiful until the end.

The title of the book though was intriguing but then after reading the book I got my answer *winks*

We also got to see the Tony, Nikki, Vic, Laura and the rest again which is always a pleasure to read and there is an addition to the gang *winks winks*

This book is a 4.5 stars for me :)

Thanks Wicked Read for a free book to read and review.

I was really sad when the love under construction series ended but I'm so glad that there's a spin off series. All these books have an element of Dom/ sub relationship that are just wonderful. The author writes like a free spirit, meaning she can cast any character into a role and make it work. One simple mistake was Doug and Vivians go. My head is spinning after reading this book and I just don't think I can do it justice without spoiling it for anyone. Just when you think the story goes downhill.....hold on. This author never does anything half ass. Overall entertainment is five stars! Love it.

I read the Construction Series and loved it, so I was waiting for this series, but I was surprised.
This story was softer, almost gentle. The story of two broken people, wanting to reach out but afraid of the pain of rejection. Their dance is tender and cautious, but when a mistake is made, the heartbreak is shattering, almost deadly. Their journey to HEA are taken with baby steps with the help of the entire Walter's clan.
I really like where the author went with this one. Waiting for the rest of this series.

Deanndra Hall has a writing style that just draws you in. I love this new series which is a spin off of her incredible Love Under Construction series. This book had me laughing and crying right along with the characters in the story. Something about her books and the incredibly deep, well developed characters pulls you inside the story and you feel like you are right there in the room with them. When tragedy strikes, I actually had goosebumps all over my arms! This first book in amazing and if it is any indication of what is to come, this series is going to be unbelievably gut wrenching. But the journey is half the fun, and when the characters get their HEA, it is a stunning outcome to a very soul shattering experience.
Doug Benton works on the farm for Tony Walters. He was once an employee of Steve's at his BDSM club, Eden's Gate. While he worked there, he was trained to be a Dominant because he felt the pull to be in control and a bit sadistic. He was comfortable in his role and his duty to the submissives, but when he meets Brittany's sister, something amazing draws his eye to this gal. But he has his troubles too. He is as kinky as it comes and his new attraction is so vanilla it isn't funny. Doug's past isn't all roses, either. Being disowned by his dad for not following in his father's footsteps may have detrimental influence on his ability to find happiness until the Walter's clan steps in and helps him face the truth. He is also still reeling from Steve and Kelly's wedding. Now he is sure his infatuation with the busty Kelly will never be returned.
Vivian Norton is Brittany's older sister, but she is nothing like the younger girl. Since their parents were career drunks, Viv took on the role of parent at 16 to raise her little sister. Her actions came at a high cost. Not only did she have to drop out of school, but her social skills and life skills took a hit. Although she is 36, mentally she is stunted at the point her childhood was irrevocably damaged. Naive and fighting her low self-esteem because she is not a thin, statuesque beauty like her little sister, she has trouble believing that the sexy 28 year old Doug could actually love her. When an innocent mistake breaks her delicate self esteem, tragedy strikes and it might be too late for more than just her.
This book is a journey of self discovery, and it shows you how sometimes you have to fight for more than just yourself. Being true to what you believe when everyone around you is against you is the hardest fight of all. This book also teaches you that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone can and does deserve to be loved. This book ran me through so many emotions, it is gonna take more than an aspirin and a lot of water to get over this hangover. I cannot wait to see what happens in book two, and if the teaser at the end is any indication, it is gonna be a heck of a ride!

One Simple Mistake is Doug's & Vivian's (Viv's) story. Viv is a little older than Doug but doesn't have the maturity that her age should allow her to be but, mostly it is because she is inexperienced with life. Doug finds himself working with Cabrizzi Farms and Vivian is working as a housekeeper there as well. Both are trying to heal their broken hearts and the rest is up to you to read about.

One Simple Mistake is book 1 of The Citadel Series is a spin off of The Love Under Construction Series and I wish I had read that before then I would have known more about the other couples that were spoken about in this book. However, I don't think it is absolutely necessary that you read the other series before other than it would have been nice to have known more about them. I don't think it took away from reading One Simple Mistake.

At one point I was worried about how this book would end. Deanndra Hall had me ugly crying and I hate crying. But, when I do cry I think that it is a great book because the author was able to bring out such emotion from me. I can't tell you why I cried because well that would be a spoiler and I don't do them. ;) Although, this is book 1 in the Citadel Series there is an HEA and no cliffhanger. I am looking forward to reading One Poor Choice, book 2 coming in Fall 2015

Again I say I have the best non-paying job as a blogger I got to read this ARC for an Honest review.

I give One Simple Mistake 4.5 stars! I can't wait to read more from this Author and my goal is to go back and read The Love Under Construction Series as soon as I have the time.

RIGHTING A WRONG

I loved the story of Doug Benton and Vivian Norton. Two imperfect people who both have had their more than fair share of hurt and heartache. What happens when a Dominate man meets a Vanilla woman but the chemistry is obviously there? Doug likes what he sees in Vivian but she lacks confidence and he works to help pull her out of her shell and teach her that she is precious and loveable. The story will keep you captivated with entertaining characters, heartwarming relationships and witty dialogue. It has plenty of angst and heartbreaking moments, but also shows the depth of love one man is willing to go through for a woman he truly loves. Is love enough and can forgiveness be found when in the heat of passion one word shatters their world and breaks two hearts.

This is book one of the Citadel series, and it is a spinoff of the Love Under Construction series which brings the people from that series into this one. It can read as a standalone, but in understanding the people, relationships and past scenarios it may be a bit confusing to keep everyone straight, especially at the very beginning. This story will mainly focus on Doug Benton and Vivian Norton as they begin a relationship.

Deanndra Hall spins these tales in such a way that you feel like you personally get to know the characters and you feel the emotions as the story unfolds. This is romantic erotica, where there is loving, committed relationships with hot sex scenes.

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, betrayal, pain, sadness, and heartbreak.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
The Groundbreaking (Love Under Construction Introductory Volume)
Laying a Foundation (Love Under Construction, #1)
Tearing Down Walls (Love Under Construction, #2)
Renovating a Heart (Love Under Construction, #3)
Planning An Addition (Love Under Construction, #4)

This is Vivian and Doug’s story. Doug and Vivian are in love with people who are already taken. They both know they need to move on. When Doug shows an interest in Vivian she wonders if she is a replacement. Vivian has had to grow up fast and take care of her sister so she is naive and has not had a lot of experience. Doug is a Dom and Vivian is strictly vanilla. Can these two try and make it work? What happens when all is going well and one slip of the tongue causes it all to crumble? Can they make it back to where they were or is it all over? When an accident almost takes Vivian away forever will they learn to fight for each other or is it the end?

I loved these characters and also the side characters. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I highly recommend this book.

The Walters Family continues to grow by including not only the new progeny, but also friends and employees who grow close to Tony and Nikki. All are welcomed under their embrace and loyalty.

Doug Benton and Vivian Norton have their turn at their story. These two characters do not seem to be a match at first sight. Let's face it... Doug was employed as a sadistic Dom at Steve's sex club. How could he possibly survive being around Vivian who is tragic at relationships and inexperienced at sex even in a vanilla sort of way.

Somehow there is attraction, patience curiosity rising between these two. As they say, where there is a will there is a way, and these two work at a relationship successfully. That is until one slip of the tongue creates a chasm that is insurmountable.

As in all of Deandra Hall's books, family, love, commitment and loyalty are at the core of these relationships. The sex is hot, discussions about sexual topics are honest and uninhibited, but most of all, there is a foundation of values without which none of these characters could survive or exist within this family.

This is the 1st spin-off series to the Love Under Construction series. This is the romantic love story of Doug and Vivian(main characters) and many other secondary characters. This book is well written with lots of emotions!!! They both love others that they can't have. Vivian beautiful curvy woman with a lack of self confidence, who loves her married boss. She had no childhood, both parents alcoholics so she was forced to work hard and raise and support her younger sister and herself through college, no one for a life or successful relationship. Doug is in love with his once boss's pregnant wife. Doug is a DOM. They are attracted to each other but he's a dominant(BDSM) and is she or can she be what he needs as a submissive? Can they act on this attraction and both be happy with vanilla or kinky sex? Will one simple mistake(well more than 1) make or break this relationship? Received this ARC for an honest review from DRC's Review Team. I read this book not realizing I should have read LOVE Under Construction 1st, still enjoyed and will read that next or soon!!! Love all of Deanndra's books!!!! For mature readers due to content!!!A GREAT START TO A NEW SERIES!!!

I found this book a little difficult to get into at the start as there were so many names from the previous series that I was rather confused! This is the first book I have read from this author and I had no Idea who was who really! But that was just in the first couple of chapters. Once I got past that then I enjoyed the book.
I did love a few of the characters, namely Doug, Vivian, Nikki & Tony! I found the relationship "family" between them all was so great and the sex, holy crap & omg!!! Need I say anymore than that?? No I don't think so!!
Doug and Vivian getting to know each other was incredible and I loved them as a couple but they do go through some stuff and at one point I was so saddened by what was happening, that I almost shed some tears!
What happens to them and their relationship will make you not want to put the book down!!
There are some bdsm elements in the story that just add to the hotness especially with a certain chair!! Wow! A very enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more!

Man, it seems I can never go wrong with a Deanndra Hall story! She really knows how to keep your attention through her words, and sends you reeling for more when something changes that you wasn’t expecting.
This is the story about Doug Benton and Vivian Norton.
Doug is a Dominate, who is learning how to “control” some of his ‘picks’.
Vivian is very vanilla, and doesn’t know a thing about the dominate style, or even BDSM.
Doug and Vivian seem to be opposites, and you know the saying on that. It reminds me of my husband and I, very different, but we both bring enough to the table to make it work. I love how Vivian is open to try everything, her patience is really needed throughout the story.
One Simple Mistake is a spin-off series to The Love Under Construction Series, and I will definitely have to check those books out in the future.

First let me state that I received this book from the author, Deanndra Hall, and Paranormal Romance & Authors That Rock for an honest review. And I absolutely loved it ! This book was right up my ally when it comes to genre, with shifters and romance and passion! I loved both of the main characters, Vivian and Doug. The author gave you characters you could latch onto, both with the weaknesses and strengths..because lets face it, who likes it when the read and story is just too easy?? There is tragedy and there is joy in this book, sometimes unexpected twists and definitely lots and lots of passion :) I pretty much did not put it down once I started to read it :) I am looking forward to reading another one of her books in the near future!

I loved this book! Deanndra has done it again! She made me feel all kinds of emotions throughout this book. We get to see all the beloved characters from the LUC series, but we get to see some new characters and get to know some other characters better. This story is about Doug (one of Steve's employees who also worked at the club) and Vivian (Brittany's older sister). This is their love story and it's full of ups and downs. I sad cried, I happy cried, I was shocked and I laughed. This is a great addition to the LUC universe and an awesome first book to a new series with many more couples to come.

I was lucky enough to be given a complimentary copy of One Simple Mistake and I absolutely loved it, Doug & Vivian are very easy to fall for, their story was just beautiful, and following her learning's in the entrance from being total ''Vanilla'' just flowed from page to page, Deanndra did a fabulous job keeping the story alive, and bringing the characters to life for us.

It was very addictive, I was hooked, I kept reading into the late hours, just to get a more in.

I cannot wait to read more from the Citadel series

Be careful what you say, life will change forever if you say the wrong thing. The love of your life can walk out of your life forever.

Doug Benton was a young man with a lonely life, his dominant desires had left him broken hearted, or so he thought. Nothing would compare to the feelings sparked to life when Vivian Norton walked into his life.

Vivian was used to the Walter's clan since her sister was Tony's daughter-in-law. She had her share of bad relationship and her confidence was not the greatest so when Doug Benton took a liking in her, Vivian will finally know what true love means.

As always every story related to the Love Under Construction Series is nothing but stellar. This book was no different, it was good to see the old characters being presented in this new journey the new generation will take us. Love, admiration, compassion, respect, lust, sexual, and lots of passion are the emotions each character will show in each and every page. If you are not familiar with this new series or the other I recommend for you to read.

The way BDSM is showcased in this book is so sensual and extremely well introduced, is like taking a class yourself. I guarantee you will be left wanting to read more of this series.

Oh My Hotness!

This is my first book by Deanndra Hall but it won't be my last! I found myself quickly drawn into the complex dynamics between everyone. I know this is book one of the spin off series, so I will be going back and reading her other series, Love Under Construction. I think it would have made it easier to place who is who, and quicker for me to delve into the story of Doug and Vivian. That said, I was fully able to figure out who went with who & by chapter 2 I was fully engaged.
Doug is complex, hard working and struggling with being in love with someone he can't have. Vivian has tried to find love and been left behind by everyone. The person she is desperately in love with happens to be married to her boss and friend. When an embarassing encounter gives Vivian and Doug a moment to bond, they hope to find what all of their friends have. Along the way, they must learn to trust each other and themselves. Along the way there are missteps and mistakes, things to work through and accept.

I loved how open Deanndra's characters are. They weren't perfect, cookie cutter copies. The story line is unique and stayed floating around in my head and heart for days after reading One Simple Mistake. I am so thankful I took a chance and opened this book!!!

One Simple Mistake is a fantastic tender and emotional story. Vivian was such a sweet character, at first I thought she'd be a hard character to relate to, but I found myself cheering for her. She was innocent, shy and awkward, but you ended up seeing her open herself up and gain strength and self esteem through the love of Doug. Because of Doug's patience Vivian blossomed and became a strong woman. I absolutely fell in love with Doug Benton. He's so incredibly thoughtful, patient and amazing with Vivian. I will admit I was thoroughly upset with his "mistake", but loved him so much that I forgave him. Will Vivian? Should she? I won't spoil it for you, you must read to find the answer. The only hard part about reading this is that while it's book one of the Citadel Series, it's a continuation of the characters and storylines from the Love Under Construction series, the previous characters back stories sound amazing and are referenced throughout, so sometimes I was a little confused about the inner play with everyone else. It doesn't take away from the great story, it just needs to be explained. I of course am dying to go and read the Love Under Construction series, I have to read about these awesome characters in full now.
