This story is certainly a wild ride! I tend to avoid reading blurbs, so I was genuinely surprised by the plot and had no idea what twists awaited me.

Serena reflects on her past as she prepares for a ceremonial event. Dressed beautifully and masking her true feelings, she remembers a fateful encounter with a charming stranger whose actions have led her to a crucial moment. With thoughts of family protection looming, she steels herself for the day's events, including vows and celebrations, while planning to confront the challenges ahead.

The narrative unfolds through multiple points of view from Serena, Art, and Paul across dual timelines. The characters are dynamic, especially Serena, who embodies the quintessential protective mother. Her instinct to shield Art leads her to jump to conclusions and act impulsively. Any momma bear can relate. We’d go to great lengths to defend our children. On the other hand, Art, as a typical young adult and only child, feels stifled by his mother’s over-eagerness, and then there's Paul. Paul is a bit of a mystery. We don’t get much insight into him right away, which adds to the suspense as we gradually unravel his character.

The writing is gripping, making it hard to press pause during the audiobook. You're constantly drawn in, eager to uncover the truth! The author skillfully conceals layers of information and details about the events and characters, often delivering shocking revelations followed by subtle hints that keep you hanging on until the next clue is revealed. I truly appreciate this storytelling style! It left me breathless at times, eager to piece everything together.

Listening to the audiobook was a fantastic experience, especially since I love a well-executed duet narration. The chemistry between the narrators was spot on; they did a remarkable job bringing the characters and their personalities to life. The energy, mood, and overall atmosphere were just right, and the emotions they conveyed significantly enhanced the overall listening experience.

Overall, this audiobook is dark, eerie, and full of unexpected twists that are well-crafted and meticulously timed. If you're okay with themes of gaslighting, manipulation, and withheld details designed to keep you on the edge of your seat, this story is definitely for you. It serves as a metaphor for the skeletons we hide in our closets, or maybe it even implies some karmic retribution. So, prepare yourself for a journey filled with surprising turns and the challenge of piecing together the puzzle, because if you don't, who will?

Thank you, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley, for the DRC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a fantastic audiobook, great narrators, really added to the story.
Serena and her son Art seem to have a good relationship until one night Serena saves a stranger from a suicide attempt. This Stranger Paul then turns both of their lives upside down.
I loved how there was a twist early on in the story. I love when a story makes you think you've got it all worked out then suddenly it's going in a completely different direction, makes the story more juicy 😃
The twist at the very end was great, a little rushed maybe. Had a lot of action in the last part of the book. Short chapters, easy to follow. Likeable and also unlikeable characters. I found it fast paced, hooking me in straight away.
My first read from this author and what a read it was.
A four stars from me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just a little caution ⚠️ going into this, mentions suicide, suicide attempts, self harm.

Thank you Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for this ARC.

The New Boyfriend is a promising thriller full of revelations. I was initially engrossed and the book had my undivided attention. However, halfway through it, I found myself disengaged and uninterested anymore. I felt like the tension was building up and then boom I was a bit disappointed. The twist on the first part of the book was unexpected because if I knew that this was under this certain sub genre, I wouldn't have requested for it. Overall, it was a pretty decent story with intereSting characters.

The New Boyfriend , the premise sounded good: revenge, family secrets, manipulation, and a seemingly perfect new relationship hiding darker intentions.
Unfortunately, this one didn’t really work for me. I found it predictable and not as twisty as I expected for a psychological thriller. The story moved quickly, but I never felt fully invested because the characters and their relationships weren’t developed enough for the emotional moments to really land.
It was an easy read, but overall it felt more generic than memorable for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This thriller had me questioning everything for a good portion of the book. I enjoyed the mother son dynamic in the book and how it played into the overall story. Paul was a very odd character and I questioned his motives throughout the book. Overall this was such a quick and entertaining read.

I have so many books by this author just sitting there on my bookshelf still waiting to be read - and every time I pick up a new one, I'm determined to catch up - because although this is only my second read, I have absolutely loved both this and The Winter Visitor which I read back in September.

What I've noticed in both these reads is that what I have expected from the covers, titles and first few chapters is absolutely not what is going to happen.

After making my initial theories in this plot, I was shocked to find that this takes a whole new turn at around 20%.

Having been completely hooked right from the start, this set me off in a new direction that had my mind whirling with new theories about what was happening and how things were going to play out.

I think this threw me off just enough and although we absolutely know that something is going on, I had no clue why this was happening not did I work outany of the twists.....and there were lots along the way.

I was completely invested in all the characters and it was really hard to make my mind up about who to trust and who to be suspicious of - although I was definitely feeling uneasy throughout, I did keep holding back and feeling sorry for even those I was uncomfortable with.

This story sets off running and really never lets up. There were no dull or slow moments and I was desperate to keep reading to find out just what was going to happen in the end.

The writing style was tense and I'm pretty sure I didn't blink for the last few chapters.

This was a brilliant, fast paced read and just reminds me that I really should grab those books off my shelf and catch up now - until the next one.....

The New Boyfriend follows Serena, a mother trying to protect her son Art, when one night she saves a man named Paul from taking his life at the edge of a lake. She brings him home, and soon he becomes part of their world. Serena thinks Paul is interested in her, but the truth is far more twisted. Paul and Art are secretly involved, and what looks like love slowly turns into something much darker as old secrets from twenty years ago come back to destroy everything.
This book had me hooked from the very first chapter. The writing was sharp, addictive, and full of tension. Every chapter made me want to keep going because I needed to know what Paul was hiding. The dual timeline was done so well, and every little reveal added more weight to the story.
Paul’s character was written so brilliantly because I kept trying to figure him out, and when the truth came out, it hit hard. The revenge plot felt painful and personal, not just shocking. Serena was flawed but real, and I felt her fear, guilt, and desperation so deeply.
The ending was intense, emotional, and honestly heartbreaking. I was not expecting to feel this much.

The New Boyfriend is a slick, unsettling psychological thriller that hooks you from the very first line and never loosens its grip. The novel opens on a wedding day—sunlight, champagne, a beautiful dress—and a narrator who is holding herself together by sheer force of will. Something is wrong, and the tension of that unspoken truth hums beneath every page.

The story then winds back to where it all began: a chance meeting with a handsome stranger whose charm feels effortless, whose vulnerability seems disarming, and whose attention lands with the intensity of someone who sees straight through you. It’s only later that the narrator realises nothing about that night was accidental. The slow dawning of that awareness is one of the book’s most compelling threads.

As anonymous threats begin to surface and the walls of her carefully rebuilt life start to close in, the sense of dread builds beautifully. The author captures the claustrophobia of being watched, manipulated, and cornered with a deft, almost elegant touch. Every message, every glance, every shift in behaviour feels loaded with danger.

What makes the novel so gripping is its emotional core: a woman trying to protect her family while navigating a situation that spirals far beyond her control. The wedding day framing device adds a delicious layer of suspense—you know she’s preparing to do something drastic, but not what, or why, or how far she’s willing to go.

Twisty, tense, and impossible to put down, The New Boyfriend is a sharp exploration of obsession, revenge, and the terrifying power of someone who refuses to let go.

Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and B P Walter for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The New Boyfriend was such an addictive psychological thriller that completely pulled me in from the start. The short chapters and multiple POVs made this incredibly bingeable, and I kept telling myself “just one more chapter” right up until the end.

The story follows Serena and her son Art after they rescue a mysterious stranger, Paul, during a holiday in Northumberland. What starts as an act of kindness quickly spirals into something much darker, filled with manipulation, secrets and tension. I loved the unsettling atmosphere throughout the book and how suspicious every character felt at different points.

B P Walter does a great job building tension and making you question everyone’s motives. The dual timeline added extra depth to Serena’s character and slowly revealed how the past connects to the present. Some twists I guessed along the way, but there were still a few reveals that genuinely surprised me.

I will say that Serena frustrated me at times, and some of the characters were definitely unlikeable, but honestly that added to the messy, dramatic tension of the story. Paul especially gave me such an uneasy feeling the entire time.

Overall, this was a fast-paced, entertaining thriller packed with secrets, lies, toxic relationships and revenge. If you enjoy twisty psychological thrillers with unreliable characters and constant tension, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.

Prologue opens on a wedding day—sunlight, champagne, a beautiful dress—and Serena is holding herself together by sheer force of will. She wishes she could go back to how it all started seven months ago.

Story begins when Serena and her twenty-year-old son Art are on holiday in Northumberland, Serena finds Paul in the woods, and it appears he wants to take his life. She talks him into going back to the cottage where they are staying.
In a few days they will be heading back to London and Paul goes back with them. However, it doesn’t end there as later Serena bumps into Paul and a friendship begins.
But soon Paul’s behavior worries Serena. She worries Paul’s arrival in their lives may not have been random.
I am a big audiobook fan, but I had a hard time liking these characters especially Serena – not sure if my reaction is more from the narrator’s performance of her or not.
I hung in there, but I never got to the point of loving it.
However, I want to try this author again.

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for granting me this audiobook.

4.5⭐ Oh my goodness, what whiplash! Plot twists and turns that continuously keep you turning pages and asking, "what in the world!??". The big reveal and denouement absolutely make the book, addressing every point and tying up strings you didn't even realize were loose!

Serena saves a young man, Paul, and brings him back to her holiday rental, hoping she can turn his perspective around. Her son Art is very nervous and doesn't trust Paul- at first. Serena's friend offers the best advice: you should take him to the hospital for an evaluation, but be careful, you don't know him. If only she heeded the warning....

Now, Serena finds herself miserable, powerless to control the people around her, knowing lies are spreading faster than she can disprove them- but why? Is there any truth here? Surely her son is blinded and will be hurt if he ignores her warnings? Art is all this momma has left and she's not going to give him up without a fight. Serena's inability to cut the apron strings help drive this book and keep the mystery of the real driving force hidden from readers. Can you pick up on all the clues and unravel the logic before the big reveal? I didn't!

Troupes: helicopter/dependent parent, big reveal, backstabbing, "you deserved it" twist
Spice: 2/5 🌶️
Gore: 1/5 🩸
Language: 1/5 👀
Triggers: gaslighting, manipulation, abuse, assault and battery, faked relationship/betrayed after sex, murder

The setup...
Serena and her college-aged son Art are on holiday in the woods while Art recovers from a traumatic event at college. On a walk through the woods, Serena finds a young man (Paul) about to end his life by jumping in a river. She brings him back to the holiday cabin and helps calm him down.

The heart of story...
Serena finds Paul to be attractive, but is 10 years her junior. She thinks he is interested in her, and after they come from the cabin they begin to text each other regularly. On what she thinks is a date with him, Paul blurts out that he has been sleeping with her son Art! Serena is horrified, and feels betrayed. For months, she agonizes over whether or not Paul is truly interested in her son, or interested in his inheritance. Art feels like Serena is just jealous of the attention from Paul.

The narration...
The story is told, mostly, from Serena and Art's point of view. The audiobook narrators were wonderful and truly captured the passion and fear in both characters.

The bottom line...
This was a fun twist on the "gaslighting" or paranoia thriller! I've read hundreds of psychological thrillers and never encountered one where the mother and son were competing for the affection of the same man! And the alternation between Art being afraid of Paul, and Serena being afraid of Paul, chef's kiss! You really don't see the ending coming. I enjoyed this! Four Stars!

The New Boyfriend by B.P. Walter is a gripping, twisty psychological thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish. The premise is immediately intriguing; a seemingly perfect new boyfriend enters the picture, but of course, things are far from what they appear, and Walter does an excellent job building tension right from the start.

What really stood out to me was the pacing. The story moves quickly, with short chapters and well-timed reveals that make it incredibly easy to keep turning pages. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the plot shifted in a way that made me question everything I’d read before. The multiple perspectives added depth and helped create that unsettling feeling that no one can be fully trusted.

The characters were compelling, if not always likable, which worked well for the tone of the book. I especially appreciated how the author explored themes of trust, perception, and the facades people maintain in relationships.

The reason this is a four-star rather than a five-star read for me is that some twists felt slightly over-the-top, and I would have liked a bit more emotional depth in certain moments. Even so, it didn’t take away from the overall suspense and enjoyment.

If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers full of secrets, unreliable characters, and unexpected turns, The New Boyfriend is definitely worth picking up.

The New Boyfriend was such an addictive psychological thriller on audio. It starts quite gently with some really strong character development around Serena, her son Art and their complicated relationship, before everything slowly starts to unravel after Serena brings home a mysterious stranger one wet, blustery night.

Paul quickly becomes far more than just someone needing shelter for the evening. Charming, handsome and difficult to fully read, he gradually works his way into Serena and Art’s lives in ways neither of them expected. I really liked how the story built tension steadily rather than rushing straight into twists, because it made the later reveals land even harder.

And the twists genuinely were unexpected. There were several moments where I had to stop and rethink everything I thought I understood about the characters, but I do not want to spoil any of it because the surprises are part of what makes this such a fun thriller.

The audiobook narration added an extra layer of immersion and believability to the story too. The narrator captured the uncertainty, tension and shifting dynamics between the characters really naturally, which made it very easy to get pulled into the drama.

A tense, twisty and very bingeable listen.

The New Boyfriend audiobook’s narration was on point! I loved the voices of the different characters. They made it easy to listen to and enhanced the storyline. The book starts with a prologue that tells about a wedding that takes place after the actual time period of the first chapter. Personally, I love books that jump from time period to time period leaving the reader to fill in the gaps until the plot is fully told.
The story begins with Serena, the mother of a college aged son. She finds a young man in distress and fears that he might make the ultimate sacrifice so she brings him home. They meet again and a “friendship” forms. Serena believes that he is flirting with her but that might not be entirely true. I do not want to say more because if you are reading this review, you need to find out for yourself.
Serena becomes leery of the young man’s intentions snd when he befriends her son, she starts to panic. She wonders if their chance first meeting wasn’t actually by chance.
Like I said, I loved the narration. The plot was good, but I did feel like it dragged on at times. The twisted ending made up for this though! I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.

➡️ "THE NEW BOYFRIEND" is for lovers.
Lovers of pacey, twisty, unsettling, pulse-pounding psychological thrillers.

➡️ TWO BIG REVEALS:
1) The first big reveal? This book was miscategorized!
This book is an LGBTQIAP+ thriller. The majority of the book focuses on a manipulative, evil boyfriend and his unsuspecting male lover. (Nothing about this relationship is mentioned in the publisher's blurb)
2). The final twisty reveal was impossible to predict.
WHY? No clues or foreshadowing. I prefer thrillers with cleverly planted "connect-the-dots" clues.

➡️ MORE REVEALS:
I especially enjoyed the heartfelt mother-son dynamic portrayed in the book. Both mother and son felt compellingly real.

Walter has a gift for crafting complex dynamics, and the tension built throughout the narrative was top-notch.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Kristin Atherton and Matthew Biddulph.

Both narrators gave outstanding performances that significantly elevated the listening experience.

Kristin Atherton is one of my favorite narrators. This was my first time listening to Matthew Biddulph, and I will be seeking future narrations by this talented narrator.

An ARC copy of this book was provided by Bookouture Audio on the NetGalley platform in exchange for an honest review.

The premise, atmosphere, and tension had me hooked from the first chapter. The book was at the forefront of my mind while I was at work and halfway through the story.

The pull and push, push, push between mother and son was the device that made both the book and the bad guy. I found it very interesting that in the beginning, both of them thought Paul was working an in. Mumma bear had to let go, little cub had to experience his journey and line the dots up. But he’s breaking away from being coddled and wants his mum to see him as a man, rather than her “boy.”

But I will say that some moments - particularly the final reveal at the end - felt more like they were told rather than shown.

This is a very good entry level psychological thriller that pulls in hallmark events and tropes, but keeps you invested enough to feel like it’s fast-paced. And there arent any lines to read between - you can clock it all from the get go, but you still want a seat at the table as the two relatives go back and forth.

After a highly unconventional meeting, Serena and Paul grow close. But it doesn’t take long for doubts to creep in and Serena begins to question Paul’s agenda.

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘
I instantly loved this book, thanks to the layered characters, short chapters and mini cliffhangers - so bingeable.

The vibe is light but creepy and the gaslighting was impressive because I kept flip flopping. Serena is high drama and kind of unhinged but she also had a point! The dual timelines and multiple POV really kept me guessing.

When it all comes together, it’s perfectly wrapped up but I’d have preferred Serena to have solved the mystery rather than it all being more or less being explained. Not gonna lie, I also found the ending to be pretty anticlimactic and predictable.

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗛 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗?
I’m a fan of B P Walter and recommend this and his other books to anyone that loves a fast paced popcorn thriller.

I couldn't put this book down. Every chapter kept me guessing and made me want to know what would happen next.

At first, I was completely convinced Paul was a psychotic man obsessed with money, but I was so wrong. I never could have guessed his real motive until the very end and that reveal genuinely surprised me.

The story is told through three perspectives which really helped in understanding each character and their side of the story. I also enjoyed the mix of present and past timelines though I do wish there had been more chapters set in the past because those parts were interesting to me.

The beginning reveal instantly hooked me and from there the suspense only kept building. The ending did feel a little rushed but overall the twists and mystery made this such an engaging thriller.

One thing I really liked was Serena's motherly instincts throughout the story. She never gave up on convincing and protecting her son and that emotional side added a lot to the book for me.

Thank you for my ARC audio copy of The New Boyfriend.

This book is about a mother and son who are enjoying a quiet stay at an isolated cabin. On their last night they come across a man who really needs their help. Will they help him? Will they regret their decision?

I read this book in one day, I couldn’t stop listening to it, I had to know what was going to happen. Although I did guess one of the plot twists, the other twists did take me by surprise. Honestly that’s all I ask for in a thriller book: don’t be predictable.

The characters in particular were what kept me hooked, they were so compelling. The character dynamics were so interesting, I can’t really go into much detail without spoiling the plot, but the more infuriating one character became, the more I sympathised with another. My blood was boiling on behalf of one of the main characters for the way they were being treated.

Overall I would highly recommend this book! It’s a high-octane thriller with shocking twists and characters you just love to hate.

Whilst on holiday in Northumberland, Serena finds a young man out in the snow on his own, seemingly about to take his own life. She brings him back into the cottage she’s sharing with her son, Art.

After driving Paul back to London with him, Serena bumps into him and they begin a friendship. But soon Paul’s behaviour worries Serena and he begins driving a wedge between her and her son. Was Paul’s arrival in their lives as random as it seemed?

With short chapters, and flipping between now and 20 years ago when Serena was about to give birth, The New Boyfriend was a speedy and twisty read. But it wasn’t one of my favourite BP Walter books!

I didn’t really warm to Serena, who made dramatic moves all over the place, Paul was awful, and although an early twist surprised me, towards the end was a bit more predictable and just seemed way OTT behaviour for what was explained!

It was an easy and fun read but not a standout!

Description
I think back to how it started. The handsome stranger I met one night, charming and vulnerable, his brown eyes fixed on me like they saw right through me.
I know now that our meeting was no coincidence. But I could never have dreamed how far he would go, and how powerless I would be to stop him.
And then I will do what I must to protect my family…

The New Boyfriend was a slow burn. It didn't have that hook that grabs you right away. But the overall story was good.
At times, the pacing felt a little uneven, and some characters were harder to connect with emotionally, but the mystery itself was engaging. There were a few twists that caught me off guard, which kept me interested enough to keep

The narrators Kristin Atherton and Matthew Biddulph provided a great audible performance.

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC! 🤩

The cover was what got me immediately interested in listening to this book. I really enjoyed it a lot. I finished within 3 days. It was twisty. I didn’t expect the son to be gay and it was refreshing to listen to a story with a different romantic dynamic than I’m used to reading! I was thinking, “Oh, this changes the stakes!!” The story continued to twist and turn, especially the ending when 🪨. Completely unexpected! I love that the story wasn’t that predictable either. The format of past, present, & character point of view was all set up quite nicely to connect and weave the entire story together. Nicely written and I don’t have any complaints or felt like any part was unbelievable. It all made perfect sense and I love that the best friend played a big part!! That was a nice way to increased his importance. The story was perfectly frustrating for me because I was invested when the mom was the one who got hero syndrome and changed their lives.

The New Boyfriend was a 4⭐️ read for me. It definitely kept me turning pages, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters.

Being a mother and close to her age, Selena was the standout character for me. She’s a nurturer, almost to a fault, especially when it comes to her son, Art, There’s an underlying question throughout the story about whether a mother’s instinct can really sense when something is wrong.

The first big twist genuinely caught me off guard, though after that I guessed quite a bit of where things were heading. There were still a few surprises along the way, and the short chapters made it an easy binge.

Some parts dragged a little, but overall this was a fast, readable psychological thriller full of family secrets, manipulation, and tension.

This one ended up being quite different from what the synopsis led me to expect. Not necessarily in a bad way, but I honestly think more readers would pick this up if the synopsis better reflected what the story actually is.

It was still a fairly quick read and definitely kept me turning the pages. There were a few solid reveals throughout and enough tension to keep me invested. I did guess the ending around the midpoint, but I also read a lot of thrillers, so that is always a little harder to avoid.

I have read this author before and, for me personally, this was not their strongest work. Even so, it was a solid read that held my attention enough that I wanted to finish.

Kristin Atherton & Matthew Biddulph did great with the narration!

Bingeable, fast paced thriller! I was constantly guessing who was lying and who could really be trusted.

Some parts were a little predictable… but I don’t always mind that in a thriller. Sometimes it’s satisfying to find out that I guessed it correctly.

Definitely has popcorn thriller energy- suspenseful, entertaining and hard to put down!

I listened to the audiobook and the narrators did a wonderful job. I found it easy to distinguish between different characters and they brought depth and emotion to their characters which always makes an audiobook more enjoyable.

Recommend to anyone who enjoys suspenseful thrillers where you feel like you can’t trust anyone. Along with fast pacing, multiple POV’s and multiple timelines.

Great quick read (or listen!) if you’re looking for something addictive and easy to fly through.

This book did not hold my attention. The storyline was okay but just felt a bit off.

You fell for him. You shouldn’t have…

I walk up the steps into the marble hall. I’m in a beautiful dress, a fake smile fixed on my face. The ceremony will start soon. I’m pretending everything is fine.

I think back to how it started. The handsome stranger I met one night, charming and vulnerable, his brown eyes fixed on me like they saw right through me.

I know now that our meeting was no coincidence. But I could never have dreamed how far he would go, and how powerless I would be to stop him.

So I will get through today. The vows, the photos, the cake.

And then I will do what I must to protect my family…

About a third of the way in to The New Boyfriend I was questioning whether the blurb was intentionally misleading? Was it intended as the first twist? Or was it not even that well thought out.

The pace was quick, the tension was palpable and I enjoyed the nuances of the relationships between the characters. Unfortunately where the title receives huge kudos from me for the unguessable double twist, I wasn’t entirely sure if a I enjoyed the twist or b it was a little out of left field. Nevertheless I really enjoyed the story, I was certainly hooked and the narration was excellent. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Y’all, this audiobook by B P Walter wasp manipulative, messy, stressful, and completely addictive.

The plot was packed with tension from the start, slowly unraveling into a toxic spiral of secrets, revenge, and emotional damage. I trusted nobody, which honestly made it even more fun.

The narration by Kristen Atherton and Matthew Biddulph was phenomenal. Kristen brought so much raw emotion and vulnerability, while Matthew added the perfect unsettling charm. Together, they made the suspense feel even more intense and immersive.

Fast-paced, dark, and impossible to stop listening to. 4 stars.
