I have a real soft spot for novellas when they’re done right, and this one is absolutely perfect for anyone aiming to stick to their reading goals or looking to dive back into their reading journey. This is my favorite author, so I’ll gladly pick up anything she releases! I read this before the novella was published, but life got a bit hectic, and I'm finally taking the time to write this review.
The book is short and packs quite a punch! Just picture yourself driving late at night in the dark when suddenly you hit something. You step out and find a bike and what looks like a mannequin—how strange! Then a child goes missing, and you start to wonder... could I be responsible? This drives you to go back and search for clues, only to uncover the unsettling truth that everything is not as it seems, and you've unwittingly become entangled in something much larger than you anticipated.
I truly enjoyed this read; it was lively, clever, and perfectly paced. The eerie atmosphere seeped into my bones! There's enough character and plot development to grasp the situation, the characters, and the setting. The author cleverly keeps most of the details under wraps until the end, and when everything comes together, it all makes sense!
This novella is ideal for anyone who enjoys a short, gripping read filled with morally ambiguous characters, dark secrets, bad intentions, and a small-town creepy vibe. When I finished, I finally let out a breath of relief, astonished that this wasn’t a full-length book, as it felt just as immersive as a novel. Bravo!
Thank you, Miranda Rijks, for the DRC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
For a novella, this one packs a punch! I could not stop yelling at the characters, which is one of my favorite things to do. Because they can hear me, but seriously what does my yelling do? The setting is perfect. A husband and wife who move into a small town. Build a large house and are trying to break through the locals. To find friends and people they connect with.
Clara, the wife of the rich couple, runs a clothing shop. On the night of her charity fashion show her husband tells her he cannot make it. Clara is fuming and stomps on the gas of her Audi. From the side she sees a blue streak. Did she hit someone? What was it? She is so late! She takes a quick look outside, sees nothing and jumps back into her car and makes for her fashion show, not the police. Clara is a disaster; the guilt is eating her up. Leading her to take the matter into her own hands and investigate. Will she find the missing boy?
I love how this book caught my attention and did not let up until the final page was turned. That last juicy twist was incredible. Thank you to Miranda Rijks for my gifted copy.
❗️She’s done something terrible. And there’s no way out…❗️

My Thoughts: ⚠️"Unputdownable. Unpredictable. Absolutely nerve-shattering."⚠️
I finished The Plan in 2 hours, because this book was impossible to put down. The suspense starts immediately and keeps getting more intense with every chapter. It literally didn’t even give me a water break 😭 I was stressed, shocked, frustrated, and fully invested the entire time. And those twists? Completely caught me off guard 🤯
Everyone already knows I’m a hardcore fan of Mirinda rijks This is my 6th book by her, and she never disappoints. I can blindly pick up her books at this point. I honestly believe once someone starts reading her thrillers, they won’t stop.
Also, I wanted to slap the wife for increasing my pulse rate every five minutes 😭 And the rich husband deserved a hundred slaps because wow… what an asshole.
But one thing I genuinely loved was the bond between the siblings 🥺
That’s all I’m saying about the plot because you seriously NEED to experience this thriller yourself.
Highly recommended for psychological thriller lovers.
I honestly can’t wait for her next thriller release 🔥📚
The Plan by Miranda Rijks is a suspenseful, twisty, and completely captivating psychological thriller. The perfect novella when you’re craving a fast-paced read that instantly pulls you in.
In the blink of an eye, Clare Cade’s life changes forever. While driving to an event at her dress shop, she’s convinced she hits a bicycle with her car. But did she really? Was that actually a child she saw flying from the bike?
Panicked, Clare jumps out of her car and searches the area. There’s no body, no injured child — only a bicycle and a mannequin arm lying on the road. Shaken but certain she must have imagined it, she gets back in her car and drives away.
The next morning, news breaks of a missing 12-year-old boy named Leo, who never made it home from school after riding his bike home. As search parties desperately look for answers, Clare becomes consumed with guilt and fear. Should she go to the police and confess, even if it destroys her life? Or stay silent and pretend nothing happened?
I won’t say anything more because this one is best experienced blind, but wow… I did not see that ending coming. The twists kept me hooked right until the final page.
Read this if you love: ✨ Fast-paced thrillers ✨ Psychological suspense ✨ Twists and turns ✨ Edge-of-your-seat tension ✨ Truly chilling villains
Thank you so much Miranda for my arc of The Plan, in exchange for my honest review.
The Plan, is psychological short story by Miranda Rijks. The story is set in the quiet English countryside, where the tranquillity suddenly ceases with the disappearance of a young local boy.
Clara Cade is the proud owner of a successful size-inclusive dress shop. Her life is a whirlwind of positive momentum, until one night her world is thrown into disarray. While running late for a major charity fashion show, she is rushing down a winding country road her headlights catch a sudden, terrifying flash in the dark. There is the gleam of metal, a bicycle, and a sickening, heart-stopping impact.
Clara, trembling with apprehension steps out of her car, terrified at what she was going to see. But there is no injured cyclist. instead, she finds only a mangled bicycle and a shattered clothing mannequin strewn across the asphalt. It feels like a sick, deeply unsettling prank, until the following morning, when the local community is rocked by the news that twelve-year-old Leo Burnham has vanished.
The village is in shock and Clara’s horror turns into a nightmare when she realises she is being watched. Someone knows she was on that road. Someone knows about the impact. And someone is expertly weaponizing the timing of the accident and Leo’s disappearance to frame her.
As the local police and suspicious neighbours close in on her, Clara is isolated in a web of small-town gossip and circumstantial evidence. To save her reputation, her business, and her freedom, she is forced to launch her own desperate investigation into the heart of Slownes. What she uncovers is a deeply buried, toxic secret involving local families, a secret so valuable and dangerous that the architect behind Leo’s disappearance is entirely willing to kill to protect it.
The story is well paced and I always felt that I wanted to keep reading it, but like most short stories I read I felt it ended a little too quickly. I enjoy reading Miranda Rijks novels and this was still a good solid read but too short for me personally.
Right off the bat this book grabs you and doesn’t let go!
Thank you Miranda Rijks for providing me with an Advance Reader Copy of your new novella.
Everyone mark your calendar for May 24th, The Plan should be your plans for that day.
This book starts out immediately when Clara Cade smashes into a bicycle on a winding road heading to a fashion show. But when she gets out to make sure things are okay she only sees a shiny bike and a mangled mannequin arm. Unsure of what to do, she leaves the scene unsure of whether to head to the police or go about her life like it never happened.
Unfortunately the news of a missing 12 year old named Leo has hit the town and Clara knows immediately that she may be to blame.
Caught up in not knowing what to do, her lies she’s decided to tell she quickly realizes may have not been the best idea. Someone knows and someone is now leaving her messages.
The twist and turns throughout this book will leave you picking your jaw up off the floor when the novella comes to its shocking conclusion.
The suspense throughout will have you devour this book in one setting. It is a perfect read for a nice comfy evening at home, weekend, or road trip (if you're not the one driving of course).
Miranda Rijks has once again delivered to us an unputdownable thriller that I highly recommend you read.
The Plan" by Miranda Rijks was an excellent psychological thriller from start to finish with a superb twist at the end and I did not see that coming! But, WoW. . . . . A Superb read.
Clara Cade is the main character within this book and she owns a size-inclusive dress shop. Clara has worked so hard and made a success with it. But everything changes one night, she is rushing to a charity fashion show at her size-inclusive dress shop when, on a winding country road near the picturesque village of Slownes, her headlights catch something in the dark. A flash of metal, a bicycle. . . . a sickening impact.
Clara stopped her car and went and checked what she hit. But, only n the road was a old twisted bike and a shattered mannequin lying in the road.
Then Nothing! Everything around her was silent!
The next morning, twelve-year-old Leo Burnham is missing. Was it Leo she hit? But Where is he?
WoW. . . . . . A perfect book to read for my Birthday weekend. . . . . I loVed it.
I highly recommend this book. 5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.
Big Thank you Miranda for allowing me to read this book before it hits the shops etc, in exchange for an honest review.
If you love paranoia, blackmail, and “WHAT is happening?!” thrillers… pick this one. 👀 👀 👀
This was a rapid read that hits the ground running!
We meet Clara, who is on her way to a fashion show when she hears a thud and is sure she's hit something or someone with her car.
She checks and finds a bike and body, well not a real one but a mannequin. Confused and disorientated she leaves the scene but it is just the start of a nightmare for Clara as a young boy is declared missing the very next day.
Miranda does a great job of sucking you in and setting a tense environment. I was page turning and devoured this book in one sitting.
I guessed some of the ending but I really enjoyed the journey to get there. Looking forward to more Miranda reads in the future!
Thank you to Miranda for this complimentary advanced copy all opinions are my own and being expressed voluntarily.
I am so happy I discovered books by Miranda Rijks a few years back, because I don't even have to think - she's an auto-buy for me!
This book is all about moral decisions. If you hit someone, but they disappear, would you report it to the police? What about if someone saw you? And again, what if you were being blackmailed? That's the dilemma that Clara must face when she clips a blue bike that appears out of nowhere as she's racing to get to her company's fundraiser.
Even though this was a novella, the characters were all fully developed - I could visualize each of them! The story was suspenseful, and of course, I had to read it in one sitting to find out what happened.
Thank you so much to the author for an advanced early reader's copy. This one really packed a punch!
Every character in this book was so wrong for what they did!! I flew through the book - yes it is short - and with each advancing page, my jaw dropped a little lower.
I don't want to give away the story, but each character, apart from Leo, is flawed beyond belief!
I know a short story or novella is difficult to write, because so much has to be packed into just a few pages. But I think Miranda Rijks got the balance right in this book. Characters were well developed without being too wordy. It was tense, suspenseful, dark, tragic, sad and twisty.
5/5 stars from me.
Thank you Miranda for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
As a mother, I was on the edge of my seat. A young boy is missing.
Clara is in a hurry on the winding roads to an event when she hits something. Not just a bicycle but a mannequin on the road.
The little boy is twelve-years old, and his father is creepy. Clara gets an usually message and someone claims to know what she is done. Her husband is not supportive at all and leaves her to figure it out.
Her lies about that night are not adding up and she must figure out what is happening and what really happened to the little boy.
Heart pounding and my mother’s heart was hoping everything worked out.
A quick thriller novella. Perfect for my lunch hour.
Miranda has become one of my favorite authors very quickly.
The Plan is a gripping, heart racing psychological thriller novella. Miranda knows how to suck you into her writing within seconds of starting the book.
Being a mom, I couldn't imagine feeling the way this mom does when her 12 year old son comes up missing.
Was it him that Clara hit on her way to a charity fashion show? You'll have to read to find out!
The Plan is a thrilling short story that is impossible to put down. It is a one shot read that had me on the edge of my seat. I loved that this was all about moral decisions and how they can affect so much. It starts off straight into the suspense and doesn't let up until the very end. For a short story the characters are very well fleshed out and you truly get a feel for them. Some twists I didn't see coming, but some I did, still the journey to get there was very entertaining.
✨ Thank you to @mirandarijks for my gifted copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Loved!!!!! This was a quick fast paced read full of lots of twists and turns that I did not see coming. The characters were all sneaky. The plot was super interesting. That ending was perfect. I couldn’t ask for a better read. I love this author and highly recommend all her books. They are wonderful.
Sometimes short stories are a welcome relief to books that can take a few days to finish. This wonderful little novella can even be read during your lunch break. Full of intrigue and mystery with a twist I did not see coming. Kept me completely on my toes throughout. Fantastic writing, story flowed really well, so glad I found this author!!
Don't let the shorter length fool you—The Plan packs a serious punch. Miranda Rijks delivers a fast-paced, suspenseful novella that pulls you in from the start and doesn't let go. It’s clever, tense, and the perfect quick read for a single sitting. Highly recommend if you want a great psychological thriller you can finish in an afternoon!
What a fabulous read this was, Clara is dragged into a nightmare where she doesn't understand if she has committed a horrendous crime or not? A real edge of your seat psychological thriller. Another cracker of a read from this talented author.
Oh my goodness, what a good book! This is my first time reading this authors work and I feel like this is the perfect way to know if I like or dislike their writing … well I LOVE it! Catch me adding more to my TBR now!!
Loved “The Plan” by Miranda Rijks! This was a great quick read, fast paced and packed with suspense, lies, and secrets. It pulled me in right away and kept me hooked the whole time. Perfect if you’re looking for something short but intense.
She’s speeding to a charity fashion show when she hits something - a bicycle? Where is the rider? Is he hurt? She searches for a victim and finds no one so she gets back in her car and drives away. These few moment will change Clara Cade’s life. That evening a boy, last seen near her accident, is reported missing and Clara receives a threatening text.
Miranda Rijks packs a lot of action into The Plan, a short psychological thriller about consequences. You feel Clara’s growing desperation and her husband Myles’ frustration with her refusal to go to the police. There are many twists to the plot and a conclusion that is total surprise! 5 stars.
The Plan is an intense psychological thriller short story. Despite its length, there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you in a state of suspense and anxiety - screaming in your head at the FMC for making so many horrible choices in the moment while also questioning how you might react in the same situation. There are no slow or unnecessary moments in the story and the ending has a satisfying twist. The characters are all very diverse and flawed in the most interesting ways to make them memorable despite a lack of character development that you would get in a longer story.
I highly recommend this gripping novella. It’s highly entertaining and very addictive. I couldn’t put it down. Miranda Rijks once again creates a thriller that immediately sucks you in and will keep you guessing. She is an auto-read author. There are countless unexpected twists and turns. The conclusion was surprising and satisfying. A huge thank you to the author for my copy.
