Just A Phase

Rate this book
When you catch your long-term boyfriend getting cozy with his soon-to-be stepsister—on your couch, in your house—there are really only two options: cry into a pint of ice cream… or have some fun of your own.

Palmer Jade chooses the latter.

At thirty-something, newly single, and zero patience for emotional entanglements, Palmer is ready to make up for lost time. Her rules are simple: good times, no strings. So when someone from her best friend’s husband’s unit—Bailey Diaz, a ridiculously hot Army soldier with a smirk that should be illegal and a body to match—shows up to help with some things around the house, Palmer figures he’s the perfect candidate for a temporary distraction.

Bailey’s not looking for anything serious either. Between deployments, he barely has time to breathe, let alone date. But when Palmer invites him on a petty revenge mission to her ex’s house and he ends up accidentally (on purpose) running over the guy’s stuff, things escalate—fast. One hookup turns into two, and suddenly Bailey’s seeing Palmer as more than just a fling.

But with Bailey constantly being shipped off to who-knows-where and Palmer determined not to catch feelings, their situationship is on borrowed time. And neither of them is quite ready for what happens when real life—and real feelings—start to get in the way.

4🌟, 3🌶️

I wasn’t prepared for how much this story would make me laugh, swoon, and feel.

After a breakup with her cheating boyfriend, Palmer is determined to have some fun and keep things casual—until Bailey, a charming military man, turns out to be impossible to resist. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it was the genuine connection between them that kept me hooked.

What really made this book stand out was how healthy and authentic their relationship felt. Instead of relying on unnecessary drama, the story focused on communication, trust, and supporting each other through life’s challenges. I laughed, swooned, and got surprisingly emotional watching them find their way together.

The representation felt authentic, the side characters added so much heart, and Palmer was the kind of heroine who felt like a real friend. Bailey easily earned a spot on my book boyfriend list, and together they made this story both heartfelt and unforgettable.

If you’re looking for a romance with some delicious chemistry, and depth, this one delivers.

As someone who usually reads dark and/or taboo romances, I didn’t expect to love this book so much. Obviously I thought I would enjoy it or I wouldn’t have signed up for the ARC but seriously, I’m obsessed.
I made an annotation on the second page of the prologue saying I could already tell I was going to love this book, and I never changed my mind throughout the whole thing.

After Palmer catches her boyfriend of nearly five years cheating on her, she decides it’s time for a ho phase: no feelings, no commitment, just sex.
To do that, she obviously needs to kick her now ex-boyfriend out, which she does with the help of her best friend’s husband, who’s in the army, and his army friends.
Bailey is one of those friends. He and Palmer immediately hit it off. Because of his job, Bailey also isn’t looking for anything serious. Getting deployed often, he doesn’t know when he’ll be back (or even if he’ll be back).
So neither of them is looking for a relationship. Seems like a great arrangement, right? What could possibly go wrong? 😏

I love that Palmer is plus-size and that she’s taller than Bailey, which is something I had never read before so it was very refreshing.
Both Palmer and Bailey are very relatable and very easy to like. The flirting, the banter and the chemistry between them is just *chef’s kiss*. Not to mention the spice 🥵

From the blurb, I did get a different expectation than what the book turned out to be. It didn’t bother me though, since I still got the cozy romance I signed up for.
Reading the summary, I thought there would be a more friends with benefits-ish situation going on before either of them started developing feelings, but Bailey is a goner before much sexual happens. I think Palmer is as well, but she’s way more subtle about it 😉 (Can’t blame her for falling for him though, so did I!)

I did not expect this book to play with my heart the way it did. My emotions were all over the place, haha. I laughed, I kicked my feet, I even cried a little.

Beware when you decide to read this, because Bailey Diaz will ruin all non-fictional men for you.

(I received this book as an ARC and I am leaving this review voluntarily.)

Thanks to author Blake Morgan for the ARC copy and giving me the chance to review before publication in June.

Solid 4.25 stars!

This was such a cute read and a wild ride in terms of emotions - I have been giggling, kicking my feet, sweating and crying...

First of, I love the diversity and representation in this book: different body types, physical disabilities as well as issues like PTSD and anxiety.

I could really identify with the FMC Palmer, and the MMC Bailey.... swoon! Literally the epitome of a perfect man.

Their story felt so relatable, and a breath of fresh air from all the toxicity in contemporary romance novels - this was gentle, sweet and no red flag traits in sight! Imagine a relationship after both people have been to therapy 😉...

And the spice was spice'ing🌶🌶🌶!

Would overall recommend and wishing the author the best for publication.

Loved the different types of representation in this book!
I enjoyed these characters and the journey from where we started to where we ended. This was fun, spicy and heartfelt. The flow was a tad bit off at times- however, the story stands so well regardless. Such a good read. And, the extended friend group was also really good too. I think the characters are the stars of this novel. Plot is strong. Dialogue and monologue was good. I think there was a slight disconnect between what was written and emotional reaction a few times- but that could have been a me thing & not a reflection on the work itself. Overall would recommend this novel. Excited to see where the series will go as a whole.

As a middle school teacher and military spouse myself this book was extremely relatable. It follows the story of Palmer Jade (love her name so much) a special education middle school teacher and Bailey Diaz a special forces solider in the army. Palmer is a feisty lovable plus sized MFC and she had me laughing. Diaz is a golden retriever, he adores Palmer and is so protective over her. He makes sure she knows just how special she is to him. This story brought in so many things in life most books don’t and I loved that as well. I also loved that Palmer decided she was going to live for herself after being cheated on and have her ho phase. But Diaz really was what she needed and by chapter 4 I knew he was screwed and was already falling head over heels. I also loved that this book didn’t have a break up phase and get back together phase leading to both parties sulking for each other. Oh and I cannot forget the spice! 🌶️🌶️🌶️ this book had the perfect amount of spice in it and I was all for it.

Trigger warnings: The book shared a very real experience many soldiers and their wives go through with the casualties of war. It also involved cheating and emotional abuse. Not too much but just know if you have these triggers they are present.

I had the pleasure of being on the ARC team for “Just a Phase”. To say I ate this up is an understatement! I couldn’t put it down. First of all Palmer the FMC was so relatable and has the biggest heart, she was easy to love. Bailey literally the epitome of perfect man!

Palmer walked in on her longtime boyfriend cheating on her and finally cut him loose. She decided to have a ho phase after years of an awful and unfulfilling relationship.

Bailey is a friend of a friend who helps take her ex’s stuff to him and they end up spending time together.

Neither of them want a relationship, Palmer because she’s newly single and Bailey because of his military career. But they fall hard!

One thing I appreciate is the authenticity of the military side of things. Being a military spouse there was definitely things I could relate too as well as things my husband has experienced. It was refreshing.

The spice was SPICY but with plenty of plot. I was giggly and laughing but some parts almost brought me to tears. Overall I love this book and I highly recommend!

Just a Phase was such an enjoyable read from start to finish. The story follows Palmer as she begins exploring a new side of herself after leaving a long-term relationship. When she meets Bailey, the connection between them feels natural, emotional, and exciting in a way that keeps you completely invested.

The chemistry between Palmer and Bailey was written so well, and I loved watching their relationship grow. There was the perfect mix of love, humor, emotion, and some very spicy scenes that added so much to the story without taking away from the plot. The writing style was easy to read and flowed effortlessly, making it hard to put the book down. Every chapter left me wanting to know what would happen next.

I honestly could not stop reading once I started. The characters felt real, relatable, and easy to connect with, and the emotional journey throughout the book was beautifully done. I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this book, and I’m so glad I had the chance to read it early. If you enjoy romance with strong chemistry, heartfelt moments, humor, and spice, I would definitely recommend Just a Phase.

Just a Phase was everything I was hoping for and more!! Palmer was instantly lovable and so relatable!
Bailey is the perfect “touch her and die” MMC, tattooed, protective, slightly unhinged, and completely obsessed with Palmer in the best way. The fact that he falls first made me love him even more.
And Mouse was the perfect addition to their story.
If you love Military romance, emotional vulnerability, “he falls first,” and protective MMCs, this one delivers.
I did not expect to get so choked up in this book but I am so glad that I was one of the chosen to be an ARC reader for Just a Phase it truly was an honor!

I’m incredibly lucky to have been trusted with this early copy of Just A Phase. This book is so important to me, there’s some incredible representation that is needed in books. Blake shows so well that we can find ourselves again after sad or hard things. Bailey and Palmer are actually so hot I can’t think!! I can’t wait to see where this series goes next.

Just a Phase by Blake Morgan completely swept me away. What started as a fun, spicy romance quickly turned into a story that had me laughing, kicking my feet, swooning, and even tearing up a little. I had the pleasure of being on the ARC team for this book, and to say I devoured it would be an understatement. I couldn't put it down.

Palmer Jade was such a refreshing heroine. After catching her longtime boyfriend cheating, she decides she's done settling for less and is ready for a "ho phase" with no strings attached. Palmer is a six-foot-tall plus-size FMC (totally relatable), and I absolutely loved the representation throughout her story. Her insecurities, anxiety, and fears felt authentic and relatable, while her strength, kindness, and huge heart made her impossible not to love. As a Special Education teacher, she also brought so much compassion and warmth to the story. Watching her learn to value herself and stop accepting less than she deserved was one of my favorite parts of the book.

Then there's Bailey Diaz. Honestly, Bailey may have ruined real-life men for me. He is the definition of a book boyfriend—charming, supportive, protective, dependable, and completely gone for Palmer from the very beginning. While neither of them is looking for a relationship, Bailey's feelings become obvious pretty quickly, and I loved every minute of it. Their banter was effortless, their chemistry was off the charts, and the way he showed up for Palmer over and over again made it impossible not to fall for him. If you love a hero who falls hard and isn't afraid to show it, Bailey delivers.

One of my favorite things about this romance was how healthy it felt. So many contemporary romances lean heavily into toxicity and unnecessary drama, but Palmer and Bailey's relationship was built on trust, communication, support, and genuine affection. It felt like watching two people who actually cared about each other navigate their feelings in a realistic way. Their connection was sweet, heartfelt, and incredibly refreshing.

The military aspects of the story also felt authentic and added emotional depth to the romance. You could feel the uncertainty, longing, and sacrifices that come with military life, and it made Bailey and Palmer's relationship even more emotional. As someone who appreciates military romances, I thought this element was handled really well.

And let's talk about the spice for a second—because it absolutely delivered. The attraction between Palmer and Bailey was immediate, and the chemistry practically jumped off the page. The spice was definitely spicing 🌶️🔥 while still leaving plenty of room for character growth, emotional moments, and a strong overall story.

I also loved the friend group and supporting characters. They added so much warmth, humor, and personality to the book, and I already find myself excited to see where the series goes next. Blake Morgan created a cast of characters that felt real and easy to become invested in.

Overall, Just a Phase was a heartfelt, funny, steamy, and emotional romance that left me with a huge smile on my face. Palmer and Bailey completely stole my heart, and I loved the representation, the healthy relationship dynamic, and the emotional depth hidden beneath all the chemistry and humor. If you enjoy military romances, strong representation, lovable friend groups, plenty of spice, and heroes who fall hard, this is definitely one to add to your TBR ❤️🪖🔥📚

I received an ARC of Just a Phase, and I’m giving my honest review- thank you so much Blake Morgan! This book has spice, it has swoon-worthy moments, it has tension and twists, and I was happy to tag-along for the journey.

𖦹 ☼ ⋆。˚⋆ฺ ♡ 𖦹 ☼ ⋆。˚⋆ฺ ♡ 𖦹 ☼ ⋆。˚⋆ฺ

♡ Palmer was a dream! Give me a 6-foot-tall plus-size FMC any day of the week! I loved her characterisation. Her fears and anxiety were relatable. Her insecurities weren’t unlike my own and I felt seen in her. From one tall plus-sized girl to another, Palmer, you’re killing it and don’t let anyone else (especially a mediocre man called CLAY) let you forget who you are. This is why representation is so important and Just a Phase is a book that doesn’t hold back on telling stories of the people who often get overlooked. One of my highlights was the children that Palmer taught as a Special Ed teacher. These kids were portrayed with love and respect, and I’m a huge fan of Blake for doing this.

♡ The love between Bailey and Palmer was sizzling to say the least! If you like spice, you’ll go feral for this book. The relationship between the two main characters is a fast burn and they fall hard. If I had to critique this book I would say that I, personally, think their relationship could have benefited with just a bit more time. I wish the book was longer and the characters had more time to understand each other. I think they were a great pair, but I wasn’t entirely sold on their relationship straight away. Their attraction to one another?? 100%! I knew they were interested in each other physically immediately, and the spice was spicing, but emotionally it took me a bit longer. I would like to establish that these are just my personal opinions, and what doesn’t work for me, may work for you!

♡ The yearning was strong in this book in a way that I think military spouses can identify with. The longing Bailey and Palmer have for one another is sweet and plucked at my heart strings. There was a lot of trust between them and that’s something I always love to see between main characters. After reading the “about the author section” I can see that Blake wrote a lot about her own experiences, which I love. I think this is why the representation works so well, because Blake puts their lived experiences into their writing. This helps her words feel more alive.

♡ Just a Phase is very character-driven and mainly centres on Bailey and Palmer. This focus drives the narrative forward. If you’re an enjoyer of military romances, tall queens (and their short kings) and a fast-paced contemporary romance, you will enjoy this!

Palmer’s long-term boyfriend cheating on her in the first chapter immediately had me ready to fight, but honestly it ended up being the best thing that could’ve happened because it pushed her into finally choosing herself. I loved watching her decide she was done wasting time on mediocre men and fully commit to dating, having fun, and figuring out what she actually wanted.

Bailey completely stole this book for me. He could’ve easily fallen into the overly possessive alpha trope, but instead he was thoughtful, patient, emotionally aware, and actually listened. The man has a therapist, pays attention to the little things, supports Palmer without trying to control her, and consistently shows up for her in ways that mattered. Their chemistry was incredible from the start, but what really sold me was how naturally they connected outside of the attraction. The flirting, the tension, the jealousy, the banter, the emotional vulnerability… all of it worked.

One of my favorite parts was how much care went into their emotional development. Bailey opening up about his childhood, his anger issues as a teen, and the teacher who changed his life genuinely hit hard. Palmer being a special ed teacher added so much heart to the story too, especially when she shared why that career mattered so much to her. These two really took the time to know each other deeply, which made the romance feel earned.

There are also some genuinely funny moments mixed in with the emotional ones. The dog shelter scene, the accidental oversharing, the drunk caretaking scene, the students noticing everything, and Bailey constantly trying to keep himself together around Palmer had me grinning the entire time. And yes, the tension and spicy scenes absolutely delivered.

The final stretch wrecked me emotionally in the best way. This book balanced sweetness, humor, vulnerability, and romance so well, and by the end I was completely attached to both characters. Watching Bailey slowly realize he finally had something worth changing his future for was especially moving.

Overall, this was a really heartfelt romance with strong emotional intimacy, great chemistry, lovable side characters, and a relationship that actually felt built on trust and understanding instead of just attraction.

Thank you to Blake Morgan for the ARC!

4.75/5 Honestly the story line TOTALLY a 5!! I just had to deduct a tiny bit for one thing I thought was a bit much and carried on a little longer than needed. One of my favorite things about this book is the diversity that flowed naturally in this story. Size, ethnicity, ability, all of it was just accepted and encouraged. This story was so relatable, real and honest in every chapter. I laughed, teared up (ok I maybe cried a little!) and was so invested in Bailey & Palmer’s story from the moment I “met” them. Palmer is a Special Education teacher and coach of a Special Ed Cheer Team. She walks in on her bf of 5 years while he’s cheating on her with his step sister!! Her self esteem and self confidence is so incredibly low. Once she meets Bailey he works hard to make her see her worth and believe that she is lovable. Bailey is a friend of Palmer’s best friends significant other. He is part of the group of guys who goes to help Palmer’s bf get out of her house. Bailey is such a good guy! The care and thoughtfulness that Blake Morgan took while writing about these characters is apparent and comes through while reading. Chapter 37 🥹😭 I felt every single bit of that emotion like I was right there. I did deduct a tiny bit in my rating because the spice in some spots got a bit much for my personal taste. Some of it just feels like too much and takes away from the story and a couple times I felt like it was going on too long, again the majority of the spicy scenes were great. The other thing I wished is that there was a bit more at the ending. I wanted to see what happened during those 8 months between the end and the epilogue. But maybe that is coming in future books. This book 1 in the Vice & Valor Series and I hope more is coming soon!! I’m so thankful I was chosen to receive an advanced digital copy of this book and read it before many others. Thank you Blake Morgan for the opportunity to read this early and be on your ARC Team! This review is all my opinions.

ARC Review: 4.5 ⭐

Y'all, when I tell you I INHALED this one day, I'm not kidding. Reading slump officially cured.

Bailey. DIAZ. This man had me blushing, giggling and kicking my feet the entire time. There is nothing I adore more than a confident, competent man who is utterly OBSESSED with his girl. Right off the rip, Bailey saw and appreciated every single piece of Palmer. He loved her, supported her, protected her when needed AND had her back when SHE stood ten toes down to her terrible ex-boyfriend.

And speaking of Palmer, I equally adored her. She was kind, caring, funny, and her growth from start to finish was beautiful. The insecurities she had early on made complete sense given the years of emotional damage He Who Must Not Be Named put her through, but they never became her entire personality. Sure, Bailey helps, but Palmer ultimately makes the conscious decision to choose herself, and I loved that for her.

Honestly, kudos to Blake Morgan because she tackles so many important topics and underrepresented tropes really well. We get both physical and mental disability representation, a tall plus-size FMC, an MMC who’s shorter than her, and a narcissistic partner whose weaponized incompetence and manipulation tactics felt painfully realistic (to the point that I started wondering if Morgan had somehow met my ex-husband).

The details that kept this from being a full five stars mostly come down to personal preference:
1. I’ve never really loved
2. I would’ve liked to see more of before jumping straight into the epilogue. I mean, , and while the happy ending was nice, I still would have appreciated seeing a little more of that adjustment period on page.

Still, I had an absolute blast with this and will absolutely be binging the rest of the series.

Blake Morgan has made me a forever fan. The way she writes, made me feel everything from the hurt and fear that Palmer felt to the deep realization that Bailey can love someone despite his job. I was sold when I saw that Palmer was a confident plus size main character. What I didn’t expect, was to be able to take a part of that confidence that Blake brilliantly wrote as Palmer’s number one characteristic; and keep that tucked away for those days that I myself may not be feeling confident at all. Seeing authors write characters that are on the bigger side makes me a fan almost immediately. I can’t wait to see what more Blake Morgan has up her sleeve.
What happens when you catch your boyfriend of almost 5 years cheating on you? In your house? On your couch? The logical answer is you laugh and sit in the adjacent chair and tell them to continue. That’s exactly what Palmer does. After kicking out her cheating scumbag ex, Palmer relies on her armed forces friends to help him move along timely. After deciding to enter the next phase of her life, Palmer sets out in search of things that only bring her pleasure. What she doesn’t expect though is to befriend the special forces, no relationships EVER, hot specimen of a man. Wanting nothing more than to make sure Palmer sees how she deserves to be treated, Bailey set out to be the one thing that Palmer can use to bring that pleasure she’s so desperate to find.
When Bailey gets called up for deployment, he finds himself struggling with his true feelings for the one girl he was never supposed to fall for. Being scared that she will be hurt again, Palmer finds herself not able to say those 3 little words that she knows she feels. With a promise to return, and a piece of his heart left at home, Bailey leaves. Will Bailey return home? Can Palmer finally say those words that she knows she feels? Read Just a Phase by Blake Morgan to find out! OUT NOW!

Palmer walks in after a long day of teaching and all of the fun things involved in teaching, to find her boyfriend of nearly 5 years cheating on her, with his stepsister. Of course she’s too nice to kick him out immediately so she enlists the help of her friends husband and his mates to finally get rid of him. She knows his not going to leave without a fight. He doesn’t take all of his stuff, so she boxes up what’s been left and Bailey takes her to drop it off so she has backup. Her ex made her feel like she was too much and too little all at the same time. He tore her down and made her feel like nothing. Now she wants her ‘ho phase’. Casual, no strings.

Bailey Diaz is tasked with helping his friends kick out Palmers ex. He has 2 sisters, and was raised mostly by a single mum but the truth is his dad was abusive. His dad used to beat his mum, him and his siblings. He was bullied a lot at school because of his dad cheating on his mum and leaving her for the teacher he knocked up. That’s how he learnt how to fight. Then he met Mr Thompson. He taught him it was okay to feel your feelings and it changed his life. Mr Thompson was a Vietnam veteran and that’s why Bailey joined the Army. Been in the army, special forces for 10 years. His drawn to Palmer, there’s just something about her. They both want casual with no strings attached, until they don’t.

I recieved this book as an ARC and am leaving an honest review. This was my first read from Blake and I enjoyed it. The book was well written and you could really feel the connection between Palmer and Bailey. I feel like there was a really good plot at the start and then the ending was just there, but that could be what’s in the next book?

There was a whole lot of laughter, banter, found family and tears. Can’t wait to see what’s to come!

This book has five stars everything - banter? ✅ Green flag MMC? ✅ Writing? ✅ Relatable FMC? ✅ Drama? ✅ Swoon-worthy heat? ✅ The bestest rescue pup? ✅ Emotional wreckage? ✅ Seriously, I'm in love with this book... And my new book boyfriend, Bailey Diaz.

Palmer just caught her boyfriend of 5 years cheating... with his stepsister... in her own home! She kicks him out but he needs a little "motivation" to get the message. Enter Bailey Diaz, an Army mate of her BFF's boyfriend, and the rest of his military pals, to give him the send off he deserves. There's instant chemistry, sure - but Palmer, a middle school EC teacher and Special Olympics cheer coach, isn't looking for a relationship, she's gonna have herself a "Ho Phase" instead.

But Diaz can't stay away. He takes Palmer's ho phase in stride, knowing that his special ops job doesn't give him the ability to have a proper relationship. He figures that he can't be around for a long time, so he's going to at least show her a good time. Through hookups, helping with cheer practice, deployments where they have limited communication, and video chats, these two fall hopelessly in love. But will Bailey's job allow him to give Palmer the attention she deserves? Will Palmer be able to open her heart to love someone whose job requires him to keep secrets after her trust has been shattered by her ex?

This book captured my heart from page 1. I feel like I owe Blake Morgan gas money for the emotional journey she took me on (there will be tears of joy and heavy emotional moments - so have tissues on standby). This book is magic and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

This was everything I expected and more!

Palmer is fresh off a break up from a narcissistic cheating ex and becomes fast friends with Bailey after he helps their mutual friend ensure her ex moves out of her place. She doesn’t think someone like Bailey would be interested in hooking up with her but doesn’t let that stop her from admiring his good looks and getting to know his charming personality. Bailey can’t stop admiring the beautiful woman he met and wouldn’t mind helping with hey “ho phase” as she calls it. He also wouldn’t mind being the one to make her laugh again and again.

While they explore their new found friendship and the benefits that they are finding come with it, they start to wonder what life would be like with the other person. Palmer wonders what life with a safe and attentive person like Bailey would be like. Someone who listens and cares about her interests. Bailey wonders for the first time in his life what life outside of the Army actually might look like if Palmer were a part of it. The one he can see himself falling asleep with at night and making breakfast with in the morning. The things he never thought he’d want are now becoming things he can have and doesn’t want to let go of.

I was not expecting to cry as much as I did reading this book. I knew Bailey was in the Army and I knew it might touch close to home, but I just didn’t expect the waterworks. It was such a wonderful read and I will definitely be recommending it to others!

This review is based upon my own thoughts and opinions. Thank you to the author for my ARC, in exchange for my honest review.

When Palmer catches her boyfriend cheating on her with his soon to be step sister she decides enough is enough and kicks him out. Of course the ex being the scumbag he is has to be escorted out with the help of Palmer’s friend Lindy’s husband and his fellow Army friends. Palmer is sick of the mistreatment and the bad sex and decides to enter a hoe phase. However that is shortly sidetracked after meeting Bailey Diaz who is head over heels, protective and will do anything and everything for Palmer.

I liked that Palmer was plus size and taller than Bailey and that she wanted to put herself first especially after what she went through. Some of her internal dialogue and feelings made me feel a little sad and bad for Bailey, but given what she went through it’s understandable. I liked the representation throughout this book from disabilities, having a confident, tall, plus size FMC. I also did enjoy the military aspect especially being active duty myself although Bailey just spending the day with Palmer when it was clear he was on duty did give some pause lol. I would have liked to see a bit more of his friendships/relationships and work.

I will say there is a trope in here that isn’t my favorite especially when it happens at the end and I would have liked to see more of his recovery and how his life was now. I do enjoy happy endings though.

Thank you to Blake Morgan for giving me a chance to receive and read Just a Phase as an ARC. If you’re looking for strong plus sized representation, a short bad ass king, and want to representation from disabilities to military life then this book might be for you.

🎖️🎖️🎖️.5 and 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (not super detailed just a lot) : keep in mind the star review is based off of MY interests!

This was such a unique romance read. Just a Phase covered a lot of underrepresented tropes, male who is shorter, not rail thin female, special education and military.

This book follows Palmer as she finds her boyfriend cheating on her in her own house. She decides to start living life and going through her “ho” phase. Bailey helps Palmer move out and sticks up for her. They start a friendship with some sexual tension!

My favorite was how much Palmer loved her job and how incorporated the plot was surrounding it. I have helped raise money for Special Olympics, so I really connected with this aspect. I also really liked the realistic military aspects to the story (long periods away, no communication, at a moments notice).

I wqs not a huge fan of Palmer’s “ho” phase but as long as she’s happy that’s all that matters! Just isn’t my style. Some of her sass really came out when she was trying to get back at her ex! I did feel lost about 2/3 of the way through, when the story became all about lust and a focus on the physical connection.

Overall Bailey and Palmer’s story was a good read. Their story was extremely realistic and relatable: military family, breakups, friendships.

Tropes:
🖤 Plus-size FMC
🖤 Short king MMC
🖤 Disability rep
🖤 Touch her and 💀
🖤 He falls first
🖤 Tattoos

Palmer and Bailey’s story had me feeling all the feels! The banter is top-tier and had me laughing so much. I love how well Bailey incorporated Palmer’s passions into the things that they did together and how much they come to mean to each other, even though both of their paths are going to lead them in completely different directions. Even though their arrangement is supposed to be just a phase, it becomes very difficult for them to see a future without the other by their side. Bailey’s military life takes him all over the world on short notice and Palmer’s life is demanding enough as a special education teacher. The dangers and consequences of those dangers had me in tears during that portion of the novel. My heart ached for him and all that he lost but it also ached for Palmer as she may not have a choice but to live a life without Bailey in the picture again and it may be just a phase after all.

Favorite Quotes:
“If you want someone to help shoulder what you have been having to carry, I’m here for you. Whichever way you might need me.”
“I want her, all of her. I want this and her and Mouse and all her perfect imperfection.”
“I know that me loving her is selfish, because I can’t give her what she wants and deserves in the long run, but …I can’t help it.”
“Honestly, no man will ever be good enough for you, but I’m hopeful I will be good enough to at least be up to the challenge.”
“I didn’t think I was worth loving. Because of who I am and what I’ve done. I didn’t think I deserved love, not anymore, but then…I met you.”

When Palmer Jade catches her long-time boyfriend cheating, she decides it's a good time to enact a ho phase - no strings, just good times. Enter Army soldier Bailey Diaz, who's everything Palmer's looking for. He's not looking for anything serious, he's ridiculously hot, and he wants to worship her body. But the more time the two spend together, the more they both realize there may be feelings involved.

I had so much fun reading this. Both MCs are incredibly relatable, and the chemistry between them is absolutely fire. I loved that both MCs are a little different than what you read in most contemporary romances - they're both in their 30s, Palmer is curvy and tall, and Bailey is short. I especially loved that there was a focus on the height difference in their relationship (with her being taller), and both of them being comfortable with it.

I also loved that we get to see so much of Palmer's life outside of just her budding relationship with Bailey. She's a special education teacher, and outside of school, she coaches Special Olympics cheerleading. Because her best friend was in an accident that left her permanently disabled, helping those with special needs has become a passion for Palmer.

I did go into this thinking it was going to be more of a friends with benefits situation, and was a little surprised by how quickly things escalated between them (both physically and emotionally). I do wish they had been given a little more time for things to develop.

**ARC Review**
You ever read a book that slips under your skin and makes itself comfortable there? The kind that quietly settles into your soul and refuses to leave? That was this one for me.

Palmer resonated with me in a way I wasn’t expecting, not just because of who she is, but because of what she’s survived. Clay was truly the worst, and unfortunately, I can say from experience that those kinds of wounds don’t always heal cleanly.

And then there’s Bailey. Sweet lord, Bailey. The standard. The blueprint. The man all others should probably be measured against, though maybe that’s just me. 😅 The way he looks at Palmer, the way he loves her, the way he worships the parts of her that others made her feel unworthy of... it honestly wrecked me in the best way.

Their chemistry is undeniable, and the spice? Fantastic. Plentiful. Very much tailored to my particular brand of literary damage. 😂 But beyond that, it was the tenderness that got me. Their friends, Mouse (who I also would’ve adopted immediately), the way Bailey took genuine interest in her world and wanted nothing more than to make her happy.

As much as this book made me smile, it also absolutely shattered me a few times. The heartbreak caught me off guard, but somehow it felt necessary. Earned.

Truly, I can’t say enough good things about this story because it hit somewhere deep. Somewhere not many books ever manage to reach.

I gave Just a Phase by Blake Morgan 4 stars—this one hooked me right from the start.

Palmer is a special ed teacher who walks in on her long-term boyfriend cheating, and when he refuses to leave, she calls in help… which is how Bailey enters the story. From the moment he shows up, he’s compassionate, steady, and exactly what Palmer needs, even if neither of them is looking for anything serious.

The chemistry between them is instant, but what I really loved was how natural their connection felt. Palmer opens up to Bailey and he’s more than willing to be there for her, even if he thinks he might just be a temporary distraction.

Bailey completely stole my heart. Protective, patient, and all-in from the start (we love a “he falls first” MMC). Their relationship had such a good balance of emotional depth and steam.

I also really appreciated the military aspect of the story. As a former military spouse, I could feel the realism in those moments, and it added another layer to the emotional impact.

This book took me on a emotional ride. I laughed, got frustrated, and definitely cried.

Tropes you’ll get:

* Plus size FMC
* Protective MMC
* He falls first
* Military romance elements
* Adorable dog sidekick

If you love emotional, slightly angsty romances with strong chemistry and heart, this is definitely worth picking up.

Just a Phase ARC review
First, I want to thank Blake for allowing me the chance to read this, because I truly needed it on a personal level. As a former teacher and child in a military family, this book was amazing. This was one of the most heartwarming books I’ve read this year. This book healed me in a way I didn’t know I needed.

Palmer (FMC) is a teacher who works in special education and Bailey (MMC) is a special operations soldier. Palmer has the biggest heart yet life and people have torn her down in ways she didn’t think she could recover from. Bailey didn’t think he deserved love because of his career yet was the most loving MMC I’ve read to date. A short king that falls in love with a plus sized baddie? Yep, right up my alley.

What I appreciated the most in this book was the emotional vulnerability, not only from Palmer with her past relationship but with Bailey. The struggles he had growing up, how he ended up in the military and how patient he is with Palmer. The tension, the banter and the chemistry made the vulnerability more heartfelt.

If you want a military romance, a romance where he falls first and hard, a romance that will build your heart up only to shatter it in a moment. This is the story for you.

Also, mouse was a wonderful edition to the story, I loved seeing her journey into becoming a happy and safe puppy.

A romance about two people who, through a twist of unfortunate (or perhaps incredibly fortunate) circumstances, end up finding love.

Palmer - a plus-size schoolteacher who just caught her boyfriend cheating. She decides it’s finally time to start living for herself. Enter Bailey - a military guy with a killer smile, effortless charm, and absolute devotion to Palmer.

What starts as a simple "phase" quickly deepens into an undeniable connection. Their banter, shared laughter, and intimacy are beautifully written.
The only fly in the ointment for me was the revenge scene with Jared. That was a big NO. I kept thinking, "Girl, why do you hate yourself so much?"...

Despite that frustrating moment, the incredible chemistry between Palmer and Bailey made this a highly enjoyable read. If you love a military romance with great banter, this "phase" is definitely worth diving into!

I've read a lot of first novels for authors and some are good, some could use some editing, some could use some polishing, but this one is one of the rare ones I call excellent. I actually had to double check that this is truly Blake Morgan's first book, its so good. The plot is absolutely the best... She (Palmer) walks in on her ex with his step-sister in a way that other writers write about ;-) She needs some help with things at the house (you need to read to know, its delicious and petty), and he (Bailey) volunteers especially when she needed help with her "ho phase". Neither are looking for anything serious but we all know how that goes as a plot point. I loved the fact that we didn't have a 3rd act breakup but what we did have tore at my heart. The relationship felt so real, the chemistry between the characters jumped off the page, the banter was amazing. Now the spice... WOW it is so so good especially the kitchen counter scene. We also can't forget about Mouse who is the bestest puppy ever. This book made me cry from my eyes and my thighs lol

ARC read review:

4 stars
3-4 spice rating

there was some times when i wanted the book to be finished. i found that it did kinda drag on in some parts.

BUTTTT

it was a really good read!

i absolutely LOVE how Bailey treated Palmer (love the name). he worshiped her! he treated her right! i love that! it shows that there are good guys out there who knows how to treat women. also the way her treated the kids in her cheer group! heart was swooned!

i understand Palmer. her thoughts on her body image. i cried with her, laughed with her, hyped her up (or at least i like to think i did).

the only thing i would have liked is more about the cheer group at the end. did someone tell them what happened with Bailey and why Palmer was out for so long? why didn’t Chase and Lindy come back to the hospital to visit once Bailey woke up? things like that.

overall, a great book!

Thank you to author Blake Morgan for giving me an opportunity to (ARC) read it!
