On August 29, 1975, six men vanished in the middle of the night.
Fifty years later, mechanic Harper Brinkman didn’t come to this sleepy seaside town for mysteries. She came to escape her toxic ex and start over. Armed with a duffle bag full of tools and her slightly crazy best friend, Harper is finally getting back on her feet when fate steps in to throw a wrench into her life.
She should have known better. Who wins anything from those boardwalk claw machines? Of course the teddy bear was cursed!
Now Harper has a gorgeous, tattooed biker in her bed who can fix motorcycles and make breakfast…and who turns back into a teddy bear at the most inconvenient moments.
And why is he always naked!?
Harper is working hard to ignore all of that non-bear bare skin. But his protective instincts and flaming hot kisses? Those might just break down her carefully built walls.
Now Harper must decide if she can trust this mystery man from the past. He's the toy, but is it her heart being played? Will she hesitate too long and lose the chance at true love?
"Bearly Human" is a sweet supernatural romance that proves love can be found in the most unexpected places. Perfect for readers who enjoy their romance with a side of whimsy, a dash of danger, and a whole lot of heart.
Bearly Human is Ferguson Ray's debut book and the first I've read from the author. Debuts and first-reads are always a bit nerve wracking because of the unknown, but I'm really glad I gave this one a try! It's an MF teddy bear shifter romance, told from both POV (but mostly the FMC). It's relatively short at fewer than 200 pages but super cute and packed full of action with very minimal grammar and spelling errors. I would give it 3/5 on the spicy scale because it has open door spice and quite a bit of it (medium burn), but it's all fairly vanilla, which lowers the spiciness. The spice was almost more about the emotional connection building between the characters than it was anything explicit.
The FMC, Harper, is a mechanic who left an abusive relationship. She moved to the hometown of her bestie and roommate from college, Quinn, and got a job in Quinn's dad's garage. The town is adorable and a little strange in the best way, with eccentric people that take care of their own (like a police chief who believes the victim for once??). It's a little seaside town called Santa Paola (in California?). One day Harper is walking home along the boardwalk and finds a token and a vintage claw machine, so she decides to try it out. lo and behold, she wins a vintage teddy bear with a name tag reading "Ronan." What follows is a super cute and quirky romance between the two as they navigate inconvenient shifting and healing from trauma. There's this whole element of mystery and some suspense that made me read this entire book in one sitting (no joke). I don't want to reveal anything more about Ronan (MMC) because it would spoil things.
Honestly, my favorite part was the town and its people. Santa Paola's residents had Harper's back when she needed it and were just so funny and practically jumped off the page. I want Quinn to be my bestie (unicorn pajamas and baseball bat included). I honestly can't wait for the next one (teased at the very end) because it involves a side character already briefly introduced in Bearly Human.
While I rounded up to 5 stars due to the rating system, I think I'd personally give Bearly Human 4.5 stars, for two reasons. First, the spice became somewhat repetitive. There was quite a few of those scenes, despite the relatively short book, and they were all very similar. In one scene, I got deja vu because the wording was so similar. That said, the writing was really good, it felt like I could see the characters in my mind which only happens with good writing. I think it could have gotten away with delaying the spice and building up to it with other types of spice? Second, nobody ever mentioned birth control and no protection was used. For some reason that always stands out to me--maybe I'm reading too many secret baby romances?
There's no trigger warning list at the beginning, but here's what I found (may not be inclusive): past abusive relationship (both verbal and physical), stalking (by the ex), mentions of deceased parents, mentions of arson, on page violence and weapons, on page drinking (wine), and conspiracy theories. There's no bullying, no OW drama, no pregnancy, and no non-con or dub-con (consent is key!). It's honestly full of green-flags (except for the ex). I wish it had been longer, but it's also nice to read quick and fun shifter romances!

This is a very creative concept. I love that this exists. It is a super sweet read and I adore Harper for being so genuine. Ronan is a handsome teddy bear. I enjoyed their adventure of getting to know each other and witnessing them fall in love. Quinn is a hilarious friend and I love her goofiness and how well her and Harper get along. I did not like DD at all, Derek is a lunatic. The characters are well written. I loved how the town reacted to the Ronan Bear. I do wish there was a little more behind that part, I would have enjoyed more of that aspect in the book. It would have been fun. It was not disappointing though with how it was written. I did struggle with following the timeline. It felt like no time passed yet at same time it was weeks or something. I also felt confused by how much time passed with Ronan being out after the final fight. It seemed like time hadn't passed except for how they all acted like it had been forever. Clarity would be nice there, days or weeks passing without him changing would bring on more anticipation and worry. This would make his final change more meaningful. I mean it was very meaningful but anticlimactic. I really enjoyed this story and now will be counting down until book two. I want to witness all of the bears and their stories. I really enjoyed this book, it was a great read.

Ferguson Ray delivers a delightfully original paranormal romance in Bearly Human, blending humor, heart, and just the right touch of mystery into a thoroughly entertaining read. Harper is an easy heroine to root for—capable, resilient, and refreshingly down-to-earth—while the story’s whimsical premise quickly proves it has real emotional depth beneath the charm. From the first pages, the book balances playful supernatural fun with genuine character development, making it feel both escapist and sincerely heartfelt.
One of the novel’s biggest strengths is its tone: warm, polished, and consistently engaging. The chemistry between Harper and her unusual love interest is charming and memorable, and the seaside setting adds an inviting atmosphere that makes the whole story easy to sink into. Ray has a knack for keeping the plot moving while still giving emotional moments room to breathe, which makes the romance feel earned rather than rushed.
For readers who enjoy light paranormal romance with personality, humor, and an uplifting emotional core, this is an easy recommendation. Bearly Human feels fresh without losing the cozy satisfaction romance fans look for, and it leaves a strong impression as the opening entry in a series. A charming, creative, and highly enjoyable start—I’d gladly continue with The Teddy Shifters.

Harper Brinkman has escaped her abusive ex and has started over again in the scenic small seaside town working alongside her best friend. One night, she wins an adorable teddy bear from a claw machine and discovers he's actually a hot man named Ronan who went missing fifty years ago. Yet Ronan cannot control when he shifts and he has no idea how he ended up the way he did. Harper agrees to help him as he slowly breaks down her walls and she starts to fall for him. Yet will they have time with her ex stalking her in town?
This is the first book in the cozy supernatural romance series, The Teddy Shifters. Harper won me over right from the start with her trying to start over but fear of her ex haunting her. Plus I love seeing women as grease monkeys, strong and smart. Ronan is a delicious cinnamon roll, a biker with a big heart, who was cursed to be a teddy bear alongside his brother and friends in his gang. There's great chemistry between the two of them, and I do like a good supernatural mystery. Especially with the quirky townspeople who seem to know more than they're letting on. This is a fun and light-hearted read, and I'll definitely pick up the next one.
3.5/5 This was a really cute first installment of a new series that puts a new spin on shifters, specifically: stuffed animals. I have to admit, I found it to be a really weird premise, but at the end of the day, that's also what made me want to read it. The love story was cute, the small town setting was charming, and I think the book did a good job of teeing up the rest of the series. Lots of loose ends remain, but with several more installments to go, that's to be expected. I'm definitely looking forward to Bruno's story!
Many thanks to BookSirens for an ARC in exchange for my honest assessment of this work.
Bearly Human – Ferguson Ray Harper and Ronan I absolutely inhaled this book. A cute, heartwarming cozy mystery with lovely found-family vibes. I adored Harper’s little cottage and the town itself — it felt like somewhere I’d genuinely want to live. Harper being a mechanic was such a fun touch too. I always love competent FMCs, and the biker mystery backstory completely hooked me. Ronan was an absolute teddy bear :) Loved the final chapter setting up the next book in the series, and I’m already curious where it goes next.

This was a light, fluffy, cozy read (no puns intended). The stakes were low, which was exactly what I needed. There was enough relationship building and tension to make the chemistry feel believable (even if the circumstances were pure magic). I really liked this book and look forward to reading others in the series!
I found this book via a Freebooksy email and the premise intrigued me so much that as well as getting this book, I also grabbed the prequel. It was definitely quirky using teddy bears for a shifter romance but it really worked. If you are looking for something light hearted and a little bit magical, give this a try.
Harper is a mechanic a nd she works in her friend's , dads garage. She escaped an old boyfriend and started over so she thought. Then one night everything gets strange as she walks on the boardwalk. She finds a coin and puts it in the claw machine and wins a bear. The bear is a shifter who can't control the shift. It is funny and very interesting.
This book was fantastic. Absolutely loved the story.
Ronan was definitely my kind of bear. And Harper was a strong independent woman not afraid to stand on her own. It would really be awful to be stuck like Ronan but Harper came along and fixed him right up. Next book is about Agatha I can’t wait. But how on earth does the whole town know what is going on?
This is a cute instalove story. I smiled a lot while reading it. I feel like the story could have been better with more details, but it is enjoyable as is. The characters are so fun, I totally loved Quinn's quirks!

This was fun! I loved the characters, and hated the bad guy (which means good writing). I liked the balance of serious themes and topics with fun, rompy magic. And the community rallying to support our FMC was lovely to see. My interest is piqued, will be back for the next one.
3.5

This was a very cute story that really grabbed me from the blurb, to the cover, and finally to the actual story. I love the characters and I love how this is the start of many more stories to come from the little town. It wasn't a completely new concept but it still had that fresh read vibe going that I found quite endearing!
This is one of those books that I was half expecting to be just weird smut and instead it turned out to be absolutely freaking adorable cozy romance that was so sweet If you licked it would taste like strawberry bubblegum it was funny cute and absolutely adorable and for anyone who loves a hea this is the book for you
A clever concept that had me smiling throughout. If you are a fan of the 80s movie Mannequin, you will enjoy this book! (But, unlike the film, this book’s protagonist is strong, independent, and utterly lovable!) I can’t wait to read what happens next. A little bit of open door spice, but the plot is strong and drives the book, rather than the story being secondary to the spice.
What a great read!! A shifter who can’t control his shifts and has been frozen for 50 years and a mechanic who brings out the man in him!! I loved the chemistry between Harper and Ronan. The story had me reading this in one sitting and now I am anxiously waiting for the next book in the series!!
Fun quick read. The story wasn’t like other shifter stories I have read. I liked the plot and the characters. I especially liked Quinn as a side character she was really amusing.

Super cute love story. I couldn't put it down. The characters are loveable and the story is interesting. The romance is hot and there is a happily ever after with no cliffhanger. I instantly ordered the next book.
This was so adorable 😍 an action packed romance that had me laughing and biting my nails along the way. Now that Ronan is out, how do we get the rest out???
