She felt his hand at the back of her head, sheltering her, pressing her into the safety of his coat. A crack split the air, and the world turned in a roar of splintering wood, shattered glass, and terror. When Elizabeth Bennet awakens, Jane is married, Mr. Bennet is dead, and her injuries have altered the course of her future.
But when Netherfield Park is let at last, and Fitzwilliam Darcy arrives with his sister. Elizabeth’s intelligence, resilience, and quiet strength draw him in with a steadiness he cannot ignore.
Elizabeth, cannot easily trust his growing attentions. She has endured too much kindness born of pity to mistake it for affection. As friendship deepens into something more tender, she must decide whether to risk the safety of certainty for the possibility of being truly loved—and truly seen.
Beyond First Impressions is a sweet, clean, low-angst Pride and Prejudice variation about resilience, hope, and discovering that a life reshaped by hardship may still hold unexpected joy.
I liked this story a lot as I’m always interested in stories where people with disabilities rise above their limitations.
The writing style is very poetic. The author is talented.
This is a low-angst story focused on the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth.
My biggest quibble was that I was often distracted by wondering why no one gave Elizabeth a magnifier to help her read. Surely, magnifiers existed at this time. I consider this a plot hole.
4.5-stars rounded up. Read through KU then purchased.
Interesting premise - and one I have not yet encountered in all my JAFF years. A bit of a tear jerker - or it was for me, not everyone reacts the same way. But then it is not a joyous story. Love conquers all eventually, but the obstacles in our DC's path are, this time, their own doubts and thoughts. Because of the circumstances, we have a less fresh, energic or witty Elizabeth (circumstances also altered the other characters to the point we do not recognize them; just accept that the new circumstances could have provoked the changes - all for the better - in all usual characters. But the new Elizabeth is more thoughtful, less judgmental, more reserved also...
The story progresses slowly - and while there is a lot of page time for Elizabeth and Darcy, the avancement is made in very small steps. This is why, maybe, I felt the story dragged on for a while... I do not know - and for now I do not think - I would revisit it, at least not soon. But at the same time, I am not ready to forget it either. It made a rather good (first) impression.
I would say 3.5 is a fair mark, but I have to round up; this is certainly not a 3 star work. Looking forward to the next story, Ms Carleton.
Darcy is so steady and compassionate throughout this story, Elizabeth has an issue that she overcomes with grace and some stubbornness. They have a few misunderstood moments but quickly resolve them. Her family is loving and accommodating, a little better because of circumstances. Binley is there but with a little more backbone. The story flows very well. I enjoyed this and will probably read it again. ♥️🙏🙌
I wanted to like this book much more than I did. I found the writing ponderous stilted and repetetive. Too many backs of chairs clutched imo. Then the employment of not this but that then this within the work. This one wont be a reread for me.
Are you a Pride and Prejudice fan??? Purchase this story variation today!!!!
As a disabled person I absolutely adored this book!! I learned about it a couple of days ago from a Jane Austen page that I follow. This is first book I've been able to read in a long time. I got a head injury and already had dyslexia reading while had been a favorite activity had become next to impossible besides audiobooks. I hope this will become an audiobook because I think it would mean a lot to so many that need audiobooks to read in the disability community. I'm a huge Jane Austen fan especially pride and prejudice. My cat is literally named Mr Darcy. Elizabeth Bennet is one of my favorite characters ever. Reading about this alternative path that her life could have taken is my favorite I've ever read. I really like JAFF and it's wild for me to admit this but I enjoyed the characters even more like this!!!
It is incredibly validating to read and a character that because of their disability struggles to read when you yourself struggles to read. Like either you have lived experience of disability or you did incredible research. I'm so blown away at how correct you got disability. The feeling of being a burden or that others see you that way even when you've tried very hard to stop feeling like that. Just so much good in this.
I do wish the family coming together to be there for her was more of a common story when it comes to family of disabled folks. They're more often like Mrs. Bennet or ghost you... Or worse they're like Miss Bingley .That's how my family is mostly a mix of those three. That's how many of my friends families are.
Although, even if that wasn't entirely accurate on how people treat disability in their family's it was nice escapism.
I hope some day I can get to the point Elizabeth did and feel safe letting the idea of love in. Sadly, my government makes that impossible. I'm on SSI and need Medicare to survive... The marriage penalty would mean certain death so unfortunately all I have is my dreams and books like your lovely one.
Thanks for using a real Artist and not using AI to write or make the cover. The artwork on the cover is beautiful 🍓
Thanks for writing a story about disability especially a love story... Even more so thanks for telling a Jane Austen fanfiction with disability. These types of books are so important for the disability community.
This will make my top books of the year list. Amazing prose with qualities that approach Austen at times, but the author keeps her own voice devoid of AI. The story line is special. One of those books that made me look forward to my reading time each night. Dear author, credit your excellent editor!
very contradictory, repetitive... how can one read and sew, embroider even, but than she need to touch the walls to walk? also she can't see clearly, faces etc but she can read?! nope...! "...she see but not exactly..." this type of sentences is everywhere. just drive me nuts! AI probably ... I'm not sure

This book grew from imagination, inspiration, and countless hours of human-written creative work.
I liked the idea of the story, and loved that Darcy was wonderful to begin with, and that Bingley actually had a backbone. A bit more angst may have made it more interesting. The biggest problem was so much of the story was internal dialogue, and it was so repetitive. Not nearly enough dialogue.
This P & P variation frames the relationship of Elizabeth and Darcy through tragedy, and the will and spirit to overcome circumstances they are powerless to change. The story is elegantly written, more internal process than external action, as our characters move towards their happily ever afters. Another pass by an editor/proofreader could have cleaned up a few minor inconsistencies, but overall a nicely told story.
I thought this was absolutely beautifully written. I felt so very much without feeling any unnecessary angst. I loved every interaction between Darcy and Elizabeth. I thought the chemistry was incredible while staying squarely in the sweet\ clean space. The story was consistently true to character but modified for the circumstances. I love who Elizabeth became and I love how Darcy behaved. I really enjoyed how the author didn't wallow in the aftermath of the accident at the beginning of the story. By chapter 2 the story was already about moving forward. I think it's permanently altered me in some ways. I hope you enjoyed as much as I did.
