The Lyon’s Last Chance by Edie Cay is a Lyon’s Den Connected World novel and is quite a bit different than most. Lord Beckett is a member of Parliament, an earl, who takes being an introvert to an extreme. Because he is worried, Timothy, nearly his only friend, tricks him into a possible liaison with a client of Mrs. Dove-Lyon. The woman is question is Nell, who is nearly as introverted as Becket, living her life by a strict routine, including scheduling her friendships. She owes Mrs. Dove-Lyon a favor and now she is calling for repayment. It entails five calls by this man, Becket. It is not exciting as they are both so reticent and inward. They walked every morning and not a word was spoken. They both liked it that way. Both, slowly, came intrigued by the other. Of course, neither had any idea of how to show their interest.
The favor Nell owed Mrs. Dove-Lyon was bad, but not as straight forward as it might appear. Becket had Timothy investigate and even he could see that. They needed to talk, but that was difficult, too. This was an intriguing novel. Both interesting characters, albeit different. It moved more slowly than many. The plot was decent and moved ahead, slowly but surely. I enjoyed it immensely.
I was invited to read The Lyon’s Last Chance by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are m ine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #EdieCay #TheLyonsLastChance
This book left me utterly charmed, an absolutely delightful regency romp.
I loved how grumpy and antisocial they both were, it was so delicious seeing such intensely guarded people slowly warm to each other. It had me giggling and kicking my feet on multiple occasions. Like the tea scene and him labelling every single one? Agh. I read it in one day, it has great pacing and buckets of yearning. It was a delightful, soft, deeply human story and I cannot wait to read more by this author!
Synopsis: Beckett is an earl, a misanthrope, and content to live out his days only until his nephew comes of age and can inherit the title, at which point Beckett can cease to exist. He has no interest in marriage or life in general but finds himself at Mrs. Dove-Lyon’s gambling den one night with his best friend who stakes his entire inheritance on a wager to give Beckett the chance at love.
Nell is a young widow, intensely smart, a little strange, and has many secrets. One of which being that Mrs. Dove-Lyon gave her a life in London more than 10 years earlier at the cost of a future favour. When this favour is called in, Nell must go on at least five dates with Beckett to fulfil each of their bargains.
Beckett soon realizes that Nell isn’t the simple widow that she seems and must wrestle with his growing affection for her and his need to find the truth.
We have a very unconventional Lyons den couple! We have Mrs Cornelia Reid aka Nell who owes a favor to Mrs Dove Lyon at the time of her choosing! The time is now ten years later! Nell is to be courted by Lord Beckett which is one of the strangest courtships I have ever read! Nell is so cold to him and he is so befuddled because he is an Earl and no one has ever talked to him that way! Strangely Beckett is intrigued enough to continue the 5 visits orginally stipulated and goes into morning walks in the park even in cold temperatures. There is a theft of paintings by one upstanding and uptight Earl! Beckett is desperate to find out more about the one woman to capture his attention and won’t let it go! When his findings lead to very disturbing news he doesn’t quite know what to do! When he realizes that it won’t matter because he’s not letting her go!! I loved him for it. When there is jealousy because of Nell’s correspondence it is very comical! But these two are definitely meant for each other! Bravo for putting a love story in midst of one of the strangest couples ever! There is definitely someone for everyone! I received an ARC copy from Netgalley for my unbiased opinion!
Beckett is an earl and a loner. In Parliament, Beckett does his best for the downtrodden, but even that gives him no satisfaction. When his nephew comes of age, Beckett can hand everything over and wink out of existence, as if he was never there. But Beckett’s best mate isn’t having it. One drunken night, the two friends end up at Mrs. Dove-Lyon’s gambling den, where his friend stakes his entire inheritance to win a chance at love for Beckett. With gritted teeth and a glowering countenance, Beckett complies. Nell has many secrets, but only one of them deadly. Over a decade ago, Mrs. Dove-Lyon protected her, giving her a new identity—a new life—in London. The price? A future favour. But when the favour comes due, it upsets Nell’s careful routine. Another interesting addition to the connected world. I didn’t connect to Beckett at the beginning but grew to really like him. I liked Nell, I thoroughly enjoyed their conversations & how they grew close. It was different & I really enjoyed it I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
The Earl and the Mysterious Widow A friend of Beckett’s gambled away his inheritance and lost, leaving Beckett to pay the price: he must meet with Nell five times. Nell owes Mrs. Dove-Lyon a debt from ten years earlier, and now the time has come to repay it. Her obligation requires her to meet an earl, though neither she nor Beckett are what anyone would consider ordinary. Their first meeting does not go well at all. Beckett and Nell are unusual people who, today, would likely be described as neurodivergent. While their personalities initially clash, their hearts quickly begin to form a connection. Before long, they discover that they genuinely enjoy one another’s company. However, Nell carries a dangerous secret, one that could quite literally put a noose around her neck. Beckett is a man guided by duty and principles, but what happens when duty collides with love? Which one will prevail? I really enjoyed this story. I am always happy to read about characters who do not fit neatly into society’s expectations. Beckett and Nell both faced challenges, and I found myself rooting for them and wanting to see them find happiness together.
An exceptionally different tale of two “loners” who finally realize being alone isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Nell has a big secret and is in hiding because of it. Beckett is just existing, waiting to die, but his friend refuses to allow that. Getting Mrs. Dove -Lyon involved made sure of that. I truly enjoyed Nell and Beckett’s ‘strangeness’ It almost reminded me of high spectrum autism on Nell’s part. It made for some really interesting, funny and honest conversation between the two. Watching them both understand a bit more of themselves and see their relationship bloom was beautiful. Her friends were a hoot, each different, but necessary in Nell;s life. This story is rich in accepting people as they are with no judgement or shunning. Lord Rincon was adorable and almost wish he could get his own story. Undeniably different and beautiful to read!
I received this story for free and these are my own views.
What a dynamic, refreshing, unexpected read! I really enjoyed this quick and sharp "grumpy and grumpier" romance!
The details unfolded so naturally and gradually that it feels like a spoiler to mention anything that happened. Both characters are not what they seem, and yet are deeply genuine and true to themselves. Their flaws felt realistic and their growth was earned. I thought the depiction of neurodivergence and masking was excellently done, true to both human nature and the time period.
I also have to give a special note of appreciation to the tea sub-plot. It began with: "The tea was atrociously bad, as if the cook had merely placed the tea leaves near the pot as the water was poured." and continued through the love story, the friendship stories, and the discussion of class and privilege. In the end, the tea got a wonderful happy ending as well — and I poured myself a steaming cup to celebrate such a wonderful book!
Beckett is an earl and a loner. Very focused on his work in Parliament, he's not interested in a wife and producing an heir. He has a nephew he can turn over the earldom. But his best friend, Timothy, makes a wager with Mrs. Dove-Lyon to find him a wife. Nell Reid finally receives an expected letter from Mrs Dove-Lyon, it's time to pay her debt. On his first of five required visits, Nell unknowingly pushes Becket's patience with straight forward comments. She has the poor man twisted in knots. Forced into these meetings, he doesn't plan to make an effort in a connection. She's has never had a man's attention and finds it very puzzling and awkward. Playing over in Beckett's head, is what he has to do to finish the visits, until he discovers her paintings. Laugh out loud moments of two misanthropes who stumble into love. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from Netgalley.
An Earl who dosent care if he really loves or dies has a dope friend who does care. A widow has a favor called in, just hear out what this Earl has going on. These two are matched by the owner of a gambling hall.
I loved how these demisexual nerds found vulnerability with each other and fell in love. I really liked the,in more modern terms, neurodivergent representation of the main characters. They were not notorious rakes getting down with everyone in london. They wanted peace and quiet, they have a sense of right and wrong, sometimes they just want things to be just right. I just felt very seen.
I enjoyed the writing . Will seek out more books by this author.
Arc provided by netgalley and all opinions are my own.
I loved this book! Edie Day is willing to write realistic stories about people of all types who make up our world. Nell touches my soul so deeply as she struggles to navigate a world she doesn't understand, doesn't feel she belongs in, and one where she often feels she is rejected. Beckett has class and privilege, but also feels that he doesn't fit in. The matchmaking of Bessie Dove-Lyons is masterful. Their courtship dance is awkward, but so real. This novel isn't about traditional pretty people. It is real with struggle, humor and how special finding love can eventually be. This book spoke to me on a deep level!
Thank you NetGalley. This was perhaps the strangest story I have read. I realize it is hard to keep making a different and new story for so many books and authors. Beckett and Nell have reached middle age or close to it without a marriage (Nell is known as Mrs. Reid with the help of Mrs Dove-Lyon). They are two people from different walks of life who don't want many friends. They start walking together in Hyde Park every morning with saying "Good morning" and not saying another word until they part. If he does anything that displeases her she is not afraid to tell him in a straight forward manner. Can two people who are like this learn to love each other.?
Beckett does not want to marry he is happy to leave his estate to his nephew. But his friend Rincon wagers his fortune at the Lyons Club to find him a bride. He is introduced to Mrs Reid and then things get interesting, both characters have personality issues they seem to be in modern terms on the spectrum. Neither like crowds and dont gave many friends Nell secrets she owes Mrs Dove Lyon for resetting her a allowing Beckett to woo her repays her debt. This was not my favourite read I did not warm to the characters Thanks to Netgalley and Dragonblade publishing for my arc copy

The Story was Wonderful & Delightful. A hero who is a depressive sort & could care less if his nephew inherited the title. A heroine who is hiding a secret. She is extremely intelligent h hates crowds. When they meet, they seem irritated & intrigued by one another. What could go wrong with this relationship? Secrets tend to find a way of revealing themselves.
Nell & Beckett were wonderful characters.
I am looking forward to reading "A Lyon Dares to dream" by Elizabeth Heights in the next book in this series.
An interesting story that had several surprises along the way to a happy ending. The two main characters, Nell and Beckett brought together by Mrs. Dove-Lyon become another successful match. Two strong personalities that unexpectedly become very compatible. It’s a good storyline, well presented and one that I enjoyed. I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and are voluntarily leaving a review.
Another interesting and unique piece from the Lyon’s Den Connected World. Some of today’s best regency romance authors bring you an interesting and entertaining experience based on the machinations of Bessie Dove-Lyon a matchmaker and proprietress of the Lyon’s Den! You can’t go wrong with any of these books and I think you will be greatly surprised by their uniqueness.
An intriguing and entertaining story in the Lyon's world. Beckett and Nell rather run away from each other instead of forming anytime of connection. They rather kept to themselves and avoid be around to many people. I loved how they were able to overcome the obstacles in their way and found love with each other. I am never disappointed in reading a story in this series. It was good from beginning to end and it was worth reading.
What a fascinating pair these two were. She's a widow set in her way. He's got to woo her to save his friend's inheritance. Right from the moment these two met, I was pulled in by the attitudes. Waiting to watch who was gonna win the struggle was a delight. You could feel the tension build in the air. A encyclopedia romance that will have you gasping and dying to see what's coming next.
This book in The Lyon's Den Connected World series was an interesting historical romance. The characters were both neurodivergent and introverts, and their relationship was complex but engaging. I enjoyed how their love story came together and ended happily. I recommend reading.
