The highly anticipated novel that delivers what romantic suspense fans have waited for—the return to Rock Harbor.
A mysterious crying in the night leads search-and-rescue worker Bree Matthews and her dog Samson to an abandoned baby in the woods outside of Rock Harbor, Michigan. Against objections from her husband, Bree takes the baby girl in. Quickly she begins a search for the mother—presumably the woman reported missing just days earlier.
While teams scour the wintery forests, Bree ferrets out clues about the woman. Where is she and why did she leave the child behind? And how does that connect to Bree's first husband's mysterious death years ago in the Upper Peninsula? Everything Bree thought she knew about her life is turned upside down with the sound of a Cry in the Night.

Book 5 in the Rock Harbor series and I have to say this one has to be my favorite out of all of them. Bree wants to have a baby but so far can't. So she help takes care of a little baby that was left in the snow. But things are not feeling right. Someone tries to take her son. Then she feels like she is see her dead husband everywhere. Could it really be him or is she seeing things?? This one has you wondering throughout the book. I loved the mystery of the whole book questioning all those questions, is her dead husband alive, who is targeting her son, who is stealing babies? Another fun series by Colleen Coble and I highly recommend it to all of you!!
It was good to catch up with characters in the Rock Harbor Series and the story line kept my interest from start to finish. I found a few of the details to be stretching plausibility, but overall a good read.
My goodness, this was the best Rock Harbor book so far – by far. I can’t even say much, because everything I want to gush over would spoil the entire story for anyone who hasn’t yet read it. Make sure you read the series in order (but skim Abomination/Haven of Swans if you get queasy), but wowza. When you get to this one, you’re going to be blown away.
The earth-shattering shocker blew my mind and kept me quite riveted. I just still can’t get over it. What a twist!
I love that Davy – Dave – is growing up, but it’s happening much too fast, as with all children. He’s still adorable as ever, and I couldn’t get enough of him. I was glad he was highly featured in this story.
Samson was great again, of course, as were Bree and Kade and Anu.
The plot was superb and quite twisty and fantastic. I really can’t tell you how much I loved it.
Y’all, there were babies involved, and this made me smile so much. I loved the baby angles too. There were a couple of different ways they were included, and that added depth to the plot.
This book was tense, packed with action, emotional, complex, and completely up my alley. It’s my favorite of the series thus far.
I hate to shred books apart with my words. I really do. Because I know the effort and work that goes into them.
BUT- this book! It made me so upset. Rob should not have been a bad guy. He was portrayed as this strong Christian in the first novel. In fact, he played a role in Bree eventually getting saved. He shouldn’t have been a villain. The end.
An continuity issue I noticed: Bree says that she hasn’t held a baby since Davy was little. I find it odd that she wouldn’t have held her niece (Lauri’s baby and Hilary’s adopted baby.)
Lauri was so annoying, and she never really learned anything from the whole situation with her bum fiancé.
Samson is the best part of this whole series. Period.
Cassie is still oddly absent. We got a whole book about her wanting a relationship built with her sister, and then for the rest of the series she’s just gone.
Why oh why would you let your 8 yr old son (who you were separated from for a yr when he was little) take off to go skiing with a woman you barely know? And who has shown herself to be slightly untrustworthy? As a mother of two, I can guarantee that I would never let my kids do that. Especially one on one.

Let us thank Samson for carrying this book on his back. I really was just not a fan. I had a lot of problems with this book.
Firstly, the autism representation? Hmmm. Not a fan. I feel like Victor was babied and treated as less than. I think the representation was poorly executed here.
As for the infertility storyline, I actually thought it was good, but like, I felt like it was only mentioned a couple of times. Something that huge should take more precedence.
Kade is so hard to stand. He is extremely unsympathetic and just ughhh. Did not like him whatsoever.
The dead husband coming back was like...uhhhh okay? I guess? Weird? But whatever, okay.
Overall, this story contained lots of elements that could’ve been executed greatly, but fell really short for me.

I am torn on weather I liked this or not. I was thrilled to read another installment of the Rock Harbor series -- but I was a bit disgusted that Ms. Coble brought Rob back to life and made him a bad guy.
Still love your books though Ms. Coble!! Bring 'em on!

Wow! What can I say except it was another all nighter that I couldn't put down. Excelent Mystery Read. I highly recommend the Rock Harbor Series. Colleen Coble is a great writer, the books in this series are as follows:
When Davy tells Bree and Kade about a windigo burying a baby in the snow, Bree dismisses it as a wild imagination. She had always been clear with him that the Ojibwa legend was just that: a legend. While his insistence starts to worry her, she's more concerned about the the bodies they start finding. When she and Samson find a living baby in the woods, she immediately agrees to take custody. Since she and Kade suffered a miscarriage not long before, she feels this is Gods sign for them to adopt. Kade isn't as sure though His job in jeopardy, and his boss pushing him to falsify reports, he withdraws into himself and tries to solve his problems alone. When someone from Bree's past reappears, she needs to figure out what it is she wants in life the most Of the series, this is probably my least favourite story. It was still well written, and I still enjoyed the characters, but I feel like she wrote herself into the corner here. Something that happened in a previous book that was a major plotline was completely contradicted in this book. I understand wanting to continue the series but there were ways to do it. Bree was a search and rescue expert, there were literally endless possibilities they could have written
Excellent!! This book took my on an adventure I never expected. I fell in love with the character of Bree from the beginning of the series and have watched her develop and grow through every trial. To see how her life was upended by the return of her dead husband- what?!- and face the man she once loved to what he had become. Wow!! Excellent writing that once again kept me guessing and unable to put the book down!

I would recommend leaving this one out completely of the series. It wasn't true to the timeline or the characters and I felt that it was forgetting all about the previous books' storylines/themes.
It felt much more like a stand alone novel and I didn't appreciate where it "took" the series and that some of the same adventures could have been taken without the way this one played out. Very disappointed.
I’m generally a fan of Ms. Coble’s works, but this one was terrible!! Did she run out of plots? To bring back someone from the dead who was supposed to be a good guy and change him into a bad guy was more than a bit of a stretch. I’m glad I borrowed it from the library, because I would want my money back if I had paid for it.

I haven't read anything by Colleen Coble before but I will definitely be on the hunt for the first 4 books in the Rock Harbor Series. The series is set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the setting really becomes another main character in the book. Anyone who knows the UP, knows that land and people definitely have their own characteristics.
Because I came into the series at book #5, I worried that I would be lost and unable to follow the story. I was able to follow the story very well. Coble put enough detail into this story from the others that I knew enough to enjoy the novel. But I am curious about the other four books!
Bree Mathews is a search and rescue dog handler and her husband Kade is a ranger for a state park in the UP. Bree's son, Davy, sees a "windigo" bury a baby in the snow. This is the first of many events that lead Bree and Kade to save Davy from that same "windigo". Their families and friends all have roles to play in the story that seem natural. These are all characters that we "know". Each reminded me of someone I know.
This story is well thought out, well researched and very well written. Even though it may be classified as Christian fiction, I didn't feel preached at or uncomfortable reading the book. I think Ms. Coble does a terrific job of melding Christian values seamlessly into the writing so that it is a very natural part of the characters. I would highly recommend this series!
Cry in the Night A Rock Harbor Mystery Colleen Coble 2009 Thomas Nelson Fiction/Christian/Suspense
Bree Matthews, her son Davy, and her dog Samson have moved on with life, after a tragic plane crash, killed her first husband. However strange happenings in their UP Michigan area, has Bree on the edge. She is seeing things, or is she?
Babies are disappearing, a social worker is missing, and someone has tried to snatch Davy. Bree's nerves are stretched to nearly snapping. Add in a sister-in-law who is super irresponsible and who has blackmailed a criminal. Truly you have a recipe for disaster and that is exactly what it is taking place.
A woman in their town is found dead in her front yard, and an autistic young man is arrested for the murder. Bree is convinced it was not him, and works hard to solve the mystery. However solving this mystery, may be the unraveling of her new life and love. Colleen Coble has brought us a mystery/suspense novel that will thrill you! Most definitely a book you will not want to put down till the end. 245 pages $14.99 US
Riveting! I am hooked on the Rock Harbor series! The story is engaging from the beginning. The suspense and danger kept me turning the pages. I become attached to the residents of Rock Harbor. This series is a must read!
I have an issue with a major early character being brought back from the dead. Not like in the Zombie or resurrection way but a faked death. TBH many of the books in these follow a very similar outline with a changes of characters and moral conflict. This was just too tropey for me.

I have loved every single Colleen Coble book I have read so far (about 11 books) and really do enjoy Rock Harbor and the characters in it. This is the first book I've read by her where I was disappointed and let down. Warning there may be slight spoilers in this review A majority of the reasoning for the low rating was because of Victor and his autism.
It also feels like the ending is very rushed. The last 2 or so chapters everything is "solved" and people just move on with their lives? I feel like the other books in the Rock Harbor series are much better and this one feels like the odd one out.

To be completely honest, I didn’t read this book. I read the ending few chapters, and they didn’t make me want to read the first ones. But that was probably because I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters, no comprehension of the plot, and no understanding of how climactic the climax and plot twists were because I didn’t understand the context. So my advice in regard to this book is if you like mystery stuff, go for it, and don’t do it like I did.
I did not see this coming. Bree, Kade, & Lauri find themselves mixed up in mysterious disappearances of babies in the area. One day, Bree & Samson discover a little baby in the woods and while they search for its parents, Bree cares for the little girl. Bree is longing to have a baby of her own and quickly grows attached.
Davy has been bringing up his dad again, saying he sees his dad's ghost. Bree also has seen a man who looks astonishingly like Rob. It brings up all kinds of hurt and emotions she thought she'd gotten past.
