Penelope’s life is shaped by heartache and loss from a young age. When she meets Myles, the boy next door, her world is suddenly filled with hope, or at least a friendship that could never fade.
Naturally, she finds herself growing closer and closer to him, and deeper feelings begin to emerge for both of them as they grow up together. As they step into adulthood, everything starts to feel lighter. New possibilities and plans begin to open until their togetherness is disrupted when Myles is given a career opportunity he cannot turn down.
With nothing left to lose, Penelope runs away to a new city and starts over.
In her new life, she finds stability, but is quickly pulled into a whirlwind of emotions when she and Myles reunite. Torn between chasing love or remaining in the life she has built, Penelope learns the truth about her mother’s disappearance, and tragedy strikes once again.
As she is thrown into emotional chaos, she is forced to choose where her heart belongs.
I was genuinely excited to read the ARC for JUST KNOCK THREE TIMES by Rose D. Bentley. I was an ARC reader for her once before and loved that book, so of course, I couldn’t wait for this one! In this book, young Penny lives a tough and sad life after her mother leaves. She’s a young girl who is very much alone and unloved. When she meets her neighbor, Myles, who steps in on her behalf, a totally new concept to her, she begins to have a little hope and a little joy. As they grow up, they grow close and into best friends. She can be her real self with him and doesn’t have to keep the things in her life a secret from him. After high school graduation, they end up going different directions, both in location and in life. The author writes their story so well that you will feel like you know them. You will feel lots of emotions…sadness, love, tension, hurt, hope and so much more. The voices and mindsets of the characters is spot on; they grow and mature with Penny and Myles as they pass from childhood to young adults. I actually thought the book might be YA at the beginning based on how the characters were painted, but no, it was just really good writing. The setting too will pull you in and make you feel like you are there. This is an excellent book and one that I can’t wait for others to experience.
I completely fell in love with Just Knock Three Times by Rose D. Bentley. It is such a beautifully written story that captures your heart from the very first page.
The character of Penelope is the absolute soul of this book. Her pure kindness radiates through every chapter, and her deep, passionate love of art brings so much color and texture to the entire narrative. The way the author describes her artistic vision makes you see the world through her eyes—full of beauty, hope, and empathy.
But the absolute highlight of the story is the romance between Myles and Penelope. Their love is so genuine, tender, and deeply moving. It’s the kind of slow-burn, meaningful connection that makes your heart ache in the best way possible. They balance each other perfectly, and watching their bond grow into something unbreakable was pure joy.
If you are looking for a romance filled with emotional depth, wonderful characters, and a love story that stays with you long after you close the book, I cannot recommend this enough! A well-deserved 5 stars!
Love love loved this book! I may be biased because I know the author but I truly enjoyed this book. It takes you through such a nostalgic, relatable love story. Heart break, trauma, love, overcoming life’s struggles and so much more! This was a quick read for me because there wasn’t a boring moment! So much relatable content & I love reading a book that I can envision the characters, settings, emotions, etc. so proud of you Rose! 👏🏻
If your vibe is: 🌸 boy next door 🌸 first love 🌸 found family 🌸 childhood friends 🌸 “I’ve always been only yours” 🌸 second chance
First and foremost, thank you Rose for trusting me as a BETA reader but as a friend to be apart of "Just Knock Three Times", a stand alone first love, second chance, found family emotional rollercoaster of a story featuring Penny and Myles. This releases May 28th to KU, Amazon and Rose's storefront.
The story's writing structure is built different than most books. Between time laspe, flashbacks and letters; you will feel the raw emotional pull of how this books engages Penny and Myles storyline. First loves never not sting when chaos occurs. Rose wrote this book with a level of trauma that the triggers warnings are in place for a reason; be kind to your mind. As beautiful as she writes Penny and Myles, there are parts of "Just Knock Three Times" that ripped my heart out but these two put it back together. The meaning of just knock three times is so special and sad at the same time.
Penny grows throughout this entire book and she grows into a strong female character on paper. If any of us had an ounce of what Penny endured her life, to get to that final chapter and be where she was? Takes a real strong, forgiving, clear minded individual. We all at some point, been in Penny's shoes and how we overcome it. We all learned, "those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind."
Myles is a male character written to loftthe worlds problems surrounding Penny and be the golden retrievwr, green flag full of life spirit for her. He does that, even over the years they are apart in Penny's letters. He supported Penny through the trauma and bonded with her to navigate the stormy waters and Rose again, wrote it beautifully and represented him being a support system that any person needs struggling through mental health.
While I was BETA reading and having to put this down to be kind to my mind, I came across a quote that I believe is totally fitting for this story: "Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone." This is "Just Knock Three Times" in one quote.
"Grief is louder than hunger and it’s stronger than exhaustion. I just need to get somewhere. Somewhere that feels a little more like home."
This book is a reflection of life, it makes us contemplate on how sometimes life can be extremely hard on us, that the people that are in charge of protecting us, harm us more than anyone else, that we feels like the darkness is infinite and the happiness is impossible to reach. But it also shows us that no matter what the circumstances there is always strength inside of us, that there is always something or someone to be thankful for.
Penelope Wolfe is a survivor , she is an example of resilience, she overcame years of physical and emotional abuse and neglect.
She was left vulnerable in a household without any kind of love or protection and in spite of all the trauma, she is the most kind and caring person.
Myles is everything that is right and bright in the world, he was her beacon of light, he was a constant in Penelope’s life and no matter the days, years or even the distance that separated them he was always there for her. She always kept her promise of loving Myles above and beyond, even when they couldn’t be together she prioritized his happiness and his wellbeing, she kept him close through her journals.
One of the things that I loved more about Penelope is that through her art she expressed everything that she loved. It was a way to bring those memories to life and place them in a canvas for her to carry with her everywhere she went.
Penelope and Miles grew up together through the pain, they fell in love, they promised each other a future together and when that didn’t happen they grieved the loss and the possibility of a life next to each other. The only thing they never lost was their love.
Life broke Penelope in a million little pieces, she glue herself together, she build a life, she let people in but she always felt hollow. It was when she found her mom that she started to understand and heal a part of herself.
When everything was lost, Myles returned her hope and her faith in life. Myles healed her soul and destiny brought them together to build the most beautiful love story.
Rose, thank you for writing Penelope and Myles book. It was the most shattering and wonderful story. Thank you for returning them to each other, their souls deserve to be together.
This novel shattered my heart into a million pieces and glued it back together at the same time and I can only hope to find the right words that do justice to this incredible love story. Just knock three times is exceptionally well written and vividly described and I could see everything, both emotional and beautiful, unfolding in front of my eyes. The abandonment, the mystery, the hardship and the undeniable chemistry, it was a lot to take and I went through all of the emotions that came with it as if I was Penny herself.
The house in Coupeville felt like a dream and I could feel the warmth, the coziness and the magic of it coursing through my veins.✨ The disappearance of Iris, Penny’s mother, felt devastatingly palpable. All I wanted to do was embrace Penny for feeling so lost and lonely without her. 🥺
I loved the way Penny’s character developed throughout the book. How she was trying to build a new life and found caring and wonderful friends along the way. Every human being needs friends and lovers like that in their life. 🥹🥰
All the happenings came together in an intense and unforgettable ending. After turning the last page I had to sit with myself for a while to process everything and at this moment I can wholeheartedly conclude this is the most beautiful and memorable love story I’ve ever read. 💝 It was so captivating and addictive and I just couldn’t stop reading. If it was possible I would give this book six stars!
This book will be published as a revised and expanded version on May 28. Make sure to grab a copy. This is a must-read if you love tropes like this:
🌸 First love 🌸 Found family 🌸 Boy next door 🌸 Friends to lovers 🌸 Second chance And the mental health rep added many more layers to the story. 🙌🏼
Thanks with all my heart for trusting me with your novel Rose. 🙏🏼♥️ I can’t wait to dive into your other work.
This book was absolutely beautiful and a must read. However, check the trigger warnings, as there are some pretty heavy topics in this book. However, Rose handled those topics beautifully (physical and mental abuse and neglect (not between FMC and MMC) and mental health.
Childhood friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and this one was perfect. I hope anyone who is struggling, no matter their age, can find themselves a Myles. I'm not sure if I've read a character like him. He's a total green flag and it was genuine and never felt like it was over the top of cartoon like. The love and care he had for Penelope from childhood to adults was beautiful. The way he tried to protect her when they were younger to how he gave her the space to be who she needed to be as she was an adult.
One of my favorite parts about this book was the self-sacrificing each character did for each other. They lived their own lives - it was the epitome of right person wrong time, multiple times and it was so so fitting. These characters were true adults and didn't just pick up their lives and give everything up for each other, which is realistic and so refreshing to see. I also loved that Penelople didn't wait around and be celibate waiting for Myles to come into her life. Her relationship with Ben was sweet, and I actually really liked them together. Again, such a good writing, to make you like the FMC with a non-endgame character.
I think the most memorable part of this book were the letters and the "I miss you, I love you, I'm sorry". It made me tear up everytime.
I wish I could read this book again for the first time. It gave me all the feels, all the goosebumps and I'm so happy was able to ARC read this book.
If Rose D Bentley puts it out there I’m reading, I want to point out that I’m not a big childhood friends to anything type of lover, but I fell completely in love with this that I’m now changing my stance and trying it a bit more from now on ! I don’t know what Rose D. Bentley has in her magical writing, but she always gets me to leave all responsibilities and read even when I’m trying and failing to fold clothes. The pain that is felt throughout the beginning of this story gets you, I cried and wished for better days for penny. Myles was her rock through all her pain, she had friends but Myles was the only one that truly saw her and witness the darkness she was living in. We focus on pennys journey to her self discovery, she was forced to grow up and evolve to see where life can take her due to her devastating circumstances. Despite having such a hard time growing up she always remained positive, always smiled and did what she could to push through to move on and leave her past behind. The heartache of the truth of her reality broke me and I’m glad the author wrote it so beautifully that we could see how pennys life changed drastically but it was all due to fate? Destiny ? Overall I loved how we focus on penny, her pain her growth her positivity and her love, love everyone around her.
Penny and Myles seemed inseparable but reality breaks them apart, having to start over and leave behind what once was, the hardest thing that penny had to do. In the end, we see how some things are meant to happen.

Rose. Girl, you really did me in on this ARC. I’ll be feeling this one for a while. I’m low key mad at you but 100% grateful I got to read it early so thank you!
I really want to do this review justice because the book and Rose deserve it, but I’m all stuck in my feelings now so I’ll do my best.
First and foremost this book was AMAZING. Myles and Penny’s story is one that needed sharing and I’m glad I got to witness it. Their love is one as beautiful as their wildflowers.
You hear of stories about young love with years and years of anniversaries that follow. Years full of love, laughter, heartbreak and happiness. And Myles and Penny have got it. Their story survives and flourishes.
But that’s not why I’m stuck in my feels. Coming from someone that has a mother with mental illness I can tell you that witnessing it and seeing how it effects them is heartbreaking. And to know that Penny thought her mom up and left her all those years ago just to find out she was in a care facility is so sad.
I’m really glad that Penny found her mom but I’m heartbroken for the outcome. But as much as I’m heartbroken, I feel relief. Because while I may not get that reconnection with my own mother, this book gave me the opportunity to experience what it would feel like if I had… and that’s why I love you and your writing Rose!
This is the second book of yours thats brought me to tears but they’ve been completely worth it so thank you!!
This book ruined me. It was absolutely incredible! So many emotions throughout. Themes include abandonment, mental illness, alcoholism, abuse, homelessness, strong friendships, and first love.
The story follows Penelope and Myles from childhood through adulthood. Penelope’s mom abandons her, leaving her with her parents to raise. Her grandfather is physically and emotionally abusive, which leads to Penelope and Myles forming a very strong, protective friendship. She spends a lot of time at his house over the years. Penelope’s only other escape is her art.
As time goes by and high school graduation nears, their friendship turns into something more. However, Myles decides to take a job in another city after graduating and moves away. Heartbroken and no longer willing to stay with her abusive grandfather, Penelope moves to another city without letting anyone know. She finds work as a waitress and continues to work on her art.
Time passes and she receives a wedding invitation from high school friends. She reluctantly attends the wedding, runs into Myles, and they catch up. However, they lose touch again. Later on, Myles ends up furloughed, finds Penelope through an art show, and decides to surprise her by spending a few days together. Myles tells her it hurts too much to keep losing her. He makes her promise if there’s ever a moment he belongs in her life again, to let it happen. He returns home. Soon afterwards, Penelope faces a heartbreaking loss, which causes her to head back home. What she discovers changes everything.
“He leaves out the dark parts. The bruises, the tears, the fear, and the pain. The longing, the loneliness, the sleepless nights. He leaves those out not because they aren’t part of me—part of us—woven into my bloodstream like a disease. He leaves those out because they aren’t for them to carry. They’re for him. The weight is his, because I am his. My secrets are his secrets.”
I read the original ‘Just Knock Three Times’ that was published in 2023 and this revised edition brought tears to my eyes just as much as the original version. Everyone deserves to find a love like Penny & Myles at least once in their lifetime. Everyone deserves someone who will figure out how to braid your hair because it’s something your mom used to do to keep the hair out of your eyes. To have someone who is patient and kind and understanding. Who sees every bruised and battered part of your soul and choose to stay and attempt to heal every part of you.
I say this every time I read one of Rose’s book, but this needs to be made into a Netflix Original or a Hallmark movie.
"She was dealt some rough cards in life. My leaving was one of them."
Not me yelling BUT WHY DID YOU LET HER GO at the very first page...
Read the trigger warnings; her life was rough, and I was triggered soon enough. It feels good sometimes to read a heavy book with a MC who has a painful past and a lot of trauma, but we know they’ll eventually find their people. Myles is a sweet MMC, very helpful with the resources he has. He and Penny are lovely together.
The structure of the book is super interesting. Even though every chapter jumps forward a year, it never feels like we’re missing information, Rose writes it in a way that keeps everything clear. The short chapters keep the pace fast, and the letters in between add so much. Little tip: Grab a box of tissues for the first time the title is mentioned.
A beautiful, heavy story, beautifully written.
"And all I know is that the further away I go, the safer I start to feel. No one can ever leave me again if I leave first and I won't dare let anyone get too close to even try."
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I loved the characters, tropes, and storyline. Myles and Penny are both so lovable in their own ways and I found Penny to be very relatable. Another thing I loved was the representation of mental health. As someone with anxiety, I related to Penny's need to run/hide in response to trauma and I think others will relate to that, too. Myles is probably my favorite character- he's solid and I think his character is the perfect counterbalance to Penny's character.
There was something missing for me, though. I found myself wishing I could read Myles's point of view, too. We never really knew much about what he was up to in Washington, but I think his perspective would have added so much. The ending also felt rushed. Penny's mom's death came out of nowhere and they never had time to mend their relationship. I would have loved more reading time with Penny and her mom after they found each other.
Again, I think JKTT is a great read and I definitely recommend it!

This story felt like the perfect blend of The Notebook with a heartfelt childhood-friends-to-lovers romance that completely wrecked me in the best way. Penelope and Myles share the kind of connection that lingers through time, distance, heartbreak, and missed opportunities. Watching them find their way back to each other was emotional, beautiful, and unforgettable.
The writing was absolutely stunning, filled with so much heart, longing, and hope. I cried, smiled, and completely binge-read this book in less than 48 hours because I couldn’t put it down.
Alongside the romance, the mystery surrounding Penelope’s mother added so much depth to the story, making it even more emotional and compelling. This was such a beautiful reminder that sometimes the people meant for us find their way back when the timing is finally right. 🤍
This was an emotional read for sure but so good! The connection she had with the boy next door just warms your heart as he’s there for her through her trauma. I teared up when Myles left for school and Penny was standing in the road watching. The way my heart cracked when he said he loved her! This book reminds you that sometimes family are the ones that come into your life and choose you instead of being by blood. This also touched on mental illness and how that can alter someone’s life and sometimes not for the better. Penny is such a strong, creative and determined woman you just root for her the whole time. Also BEN, shhooo weee boy. That man made me hungry!!! It was such a feel good type of story and I want more of Penny and Myles!

This is a story full of heartache and pain, that is also, somehow, beautiful. Penelope’s life isn’t an easy one and yet, with the help of Myles, she is able to retain hope and set on a path to find herself amidst it all.
This is the type of love that few find and yet it’s always just a little out of reach.
There are difficult topics found in these pages, abuse, mental illness, loss, but they are treated with a writer’s love, that ultimately makes them kinder than we often see in life. I was grateful for that as the tears started to flow.
I hope this beautiful book finds its audience.
Thank you to the author, Rose D. Bentley, for sharing the ARC of this book with me. It’s found a place in my heart.
Review Advanced copy from author: 🌑🧸🍪💐📝🌲🌧️📓🎨👩🎨🌊🎗️👫 Myles and Penny's love story ignited as childhood best friends that blossom into a passionate romance in adulthood. Yet, life's had twists and turns that pulled them apart, sending them down to different paths. Where it took Penny, to start a new life and embarked on a journey of self-discovery where she was shedding her fears and meeting incredible people who became her world. And even despite the distance, their connection never faded—she still thought about Myles, and when they finally reunited, it was as they were destined to be together even when life try to separate them 😘.
It follows the story of Penny and Myles. Penny has a rough childhood and troubled family relationships. The only healthy constant in her life is Myles, the boy next door.
I thought the story was really good, but it also felt like it wasn’t written for this timeline. I know Penny faces financial struggles in her young adult life, and not everyone has a cellphone. I did feel the love Myles and Penny shared was endearing… but also felt they would have been happier if they had kept in touch with a text here and there especially once they reconnected.
ARC REVIEW: This book touched my soul in ways I did not know a book could. I have been deeply in fantasy and dark romance world that I have not gravitated towards a contemporary romance for a long time. This book re-ignited my love for this specific genre and in a way I feel like I was meant to read this book. I will warn that this book will make you cry, I was SOBBING by the end of it. Upon finishing it, I emailed the author and was sobbing about how beautiful it was 😂 It was an immediate buy! I had to get the physical book, it’s a special one ❤️ Thank you Rose for letting me join your journey and see the world of Penny & Myles
Wow! What an emotionally charged book. I am completely unwell after reading this—-in a good way ❤️
The depth of Penny’s character—where she started, obstacles she faced, where she’s at and the journey to becoming the best version of herself.
I have no notes, no feedback—perfectly written as is. Complete mic drop by the author.
I devoured this book on a plane trip—not wanting to put it down. It was so well written and it’s been a while since I had a book completely pull me in from the beginning that the world outside of what I was reading just didn’t exist. Loved it!!!! ❤️❤️ 6⭐️
The boy next door, childhood traumas, so much packed into this story. Following Penny’s journey with herself definitely hit home in some areas for me. I won’t lie, I was very emotional reading this at times. But I really enjoyed how everything played out and her dynamic with Myles, everyone deserves a Myles in their life. I do have several questions still lingering after reading this which is the only reason i gave it 4/5, but still a phenomenal read. Thank you for the opportunity to read their story before it’s officially published, I can’t wait to read what else you have in the works!
"I’ve always been told that feelings are neither good nor bad. They are just a part of our world, and it is up to us whether we learn how to live with them or let them take control."
I am so thankful I was given opportunity to read this book. It was a beautiful story that felt so real. I was shattered, enraged, and overwhelmed. Left with a book hangover in all the best ways. Penny finds a way to make life all that she wants it to be and more. I wasnt able to put this book down and I definitely needed a tissue or two. Please add this to your TBR!
Wow. The story with Myles and Penny will forever be etched into my memory, It was full of love, laughter and heartbreak. I just want to say thank you to the author for putting this out there and I will never forget this story! I don’t want to add to much on here for spoilers but I hope to read much more from the author. I almost couldn’t finish reading the last letter, and then going back to her “home” my goodness. Beautifully written, thank you so much for the opportunity to read this.
Had the opportunity to read this book as an ARC before it comes and I must say this book exceeded my expectations in every way I could think of. This book had me feeling all the emotions you can think of, it was such a great book that was greatly written! 5/5 star read i recommend this book for sure!
(To the author Rose D. Bentley, Thank you for the opportunity to read this book as an Arc I greatly appreciate it!)
Rose, what a beautiful love story you have here. So much heartbreak all round, but in the same way, so much love and hope, and new beginnings! 🤍 I loved ARC reading LEO, and now being able to ARC read JUST KNOCK THREE TIMES has been another great gift. I look forward to reading more books by you — you have a beautiful way of telling stories, of causing heartbreaks but also mending hearts. Thank you for making me cry like a baby towards the end, I loved every bit of it.
Well, I had a good cry while reading this story. The writing was good, emotions were high. I liked how Penny and Myles' relationship started. From childhood friends to lovers and so much more in between, it was hell of a ride.
"The weight is his, because I am his. My secrets are his secrets."
This is such a heart breaking read and beautifully written. Please check your triggers because this story is very heavy. It’s a light read, not in its themes, but in its narrative and it really made me question what it takes to earn/gain forgiveness. It’s great read and think people will really connect with it on some level.
Myles & Penny …. In love with their story. This story has such a powerful story line of how people can truly get out and inspire others along the way. I wanted to much more with this. I could have read their story over and over and it still wouldn’t be enough. I loved all extra characters throughout the story as well. They all intermingled so well! Ugh I can’t get over this read … so good!!!
