About the author

Yana Toboso (枢 やな Toboso Yana) is a female Japanese manga artist born in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan and currently resides in Yokohama. She is best known for Black Butler (黒執事 Kuroshitsuji), a popular shonen manga series.

She has also written yaoi under the pen name Yanao Rock (簗緒ろく).

Yana Toboso draws herself as a devil with a black body and horns, a white head, and a pointed tail. She has never uploaded a picture of herself, so her actual appearance is unknown.

My first and only KS volume of the year

It is impossible NOT to love this volume. Since it was the characters vote for the 100 chapters, it is obvious Toboso-sensei let this influence her. And it made an awesome volume, I don't think any fan would be disappointed -entirely-.

What makes it a fabulous volume:

- That cover. I love Meyrin, specially since she is a badass character but also a comedy relief. She is not cute as Elizabeth, nor imposing as Lady Frances, but she is my favorite recurring female character in KS. At number #22, she finally gets her recognition.

- The end of the Emerald Witch arc, at least in Germany. This arc had it flaws but it ends satisfactorily. I confess I like the little girl, she is cute and sometimes very funny.

- Tanaka-san. The epitome of perfect -human- butler, when the Master is in danger! Of course, once the danger has passed, he goes back to "ho, ho, ho" XD

- The Shinigami Dispatch Society. We don't really get to know these two new Shinigami, Ludgar and Sacha, BUT... **rumbling drums** Grell and William are back! Just for fanservice though, but it was an incredible surprise that left me with a huge smile. And also, just one panel but still, Eric is shown crying while holding Alan's corpse. For any fan who has seen the musical, it is a bit nostalgic and a nice touch.

- Undertaker. He is in #3 in the character votes! (in my ranking, he is also #3, but instead of being behind Ciel, he is behind Grell ). His story with Dietrich and Vincent Phantomhive and another unknown guy, seems kinda like the Marauders. Vincent definitely was James Potter; and Undertaker seems like he is Sirius (looks like he loved Vincent the most, if we trust his tears).

- Ciel being a worrier. Kyaa, is Ciel getting, err, nicer? He asked Sebastian to save Wolfram (Sullivan's butler) and Sebastian himself tells him this, that he is worried for the girl. Of course, being Ciel he says this, and that, but we all know the truth: Ciel is getting nicer and seems like Sebastian is getting more human. It is all there in their conversations, like an innuendo but we fans know better!

- The Tutor. Back to England, Sebastian is in charge of making Sullivan a lady, to meet the Queen. That means manners at the table, good clothes, etc. I love sadistic tutor Sebas-chan. Not only he looks so handsome, but he is so... S. He never fails to make laugh with his methods.

- The dressmaker. Who we don't see since that unforgettable chapter where Ciel dressed in pink. She is such a fun, crazy character.

- The last and extra chapter, The Akuman 6, which doesn't really contribute anything to the story, but it was so much fun. They all look so polish (Grell and that outfit XD Undertaker and that hairstyle XD) and Viscount Druitt is such a fun.

Basically, all characters that are popular (including Lao, Agni, Soma, Snake, the Charles) are in this volume. Everything scream FANSERVICE! (including when Sebastian says to Ciel: If you disappear, I will be most distressed and worried. Because if my master is not here, I wouldn't be able to be your butler) but alas, since all characters are here, that means Elizabeth is also here. I still don't like her, and well, she is the reason I don't rate this 5* :(

How in the world are Vincent in #5 and Phillips in #6! How in the world isn't William in #5 and, I don't know, Viscount Druitt in #6! **shakes head**

*My, I was inspired. Only because I am able to read one volume per year lately *

I just realized I forgot to do my review on this volume. I hope I can remember some of my impressions.

5 Stars for artwork -- which is just as amazing in this volume as in the last few volumes.

4 1/2 Stars for the main story -- I mostly enjoyed the wrap-up for the Emerald Witch arc. This wasn't one of my favorite arcs, yet it was fitting for the time period. Parts of the wrap-up felt like a repeat of a previous story-line, which is a shame, since so much of Black Butler is so wonderfully creative and fresh.

5 BIG Stars for the Bonus Chapter! -- This hysterical, bonus story was truly a fan-girl bonus in this volume. The publisher and author had asked the readers to vote for their favorite characters in this manga series. The author wrote up a special story to let the readers know how the characters responded to the votes.

The beginning to this volume was so fucking moving. I loved it. Also loved that we got some explanation as to where the reapers come from.

XD the rest was nearly as exciting as other volumes, but it was still excellent. Lots of funny bits. & my dear sweet ciel learned a little less about empathy. Also, this certainly helps with my liking of Lizzy. :D it wasn't totally action packed but it did serve as a much needed rest form the emotional turmoil I have suffered the past few books.

The extra chapter that end with the favorites was hilarious. :) total fan service there, but it was cute and funny and I loved.

But the ever end of chapter 108? What the fuck was that?! This, my goodreads friends, is why i fucking hate the undertaker. I'm probably only the true fan who hates him this much, but I do. He is awful and what is his end came?! What does he have to do with the phantomhives?

If he really is the cause of all the death and fire like I think he is, I shall hate him for all time.

Still. A fun addition to the series. I highly recommend this series to all manga lovers. XD have I mentioned that "black butler" is my favorite?!

Lots of foreshadowing in this one with the Undertaker and his motives. Looking forward to seeing where it all leads to. I also loved the bonus chapter at the end with the character rankings. Looks like my top characters are pretty popular as well.

This is the last volume I am reviewing for now and I hope to finish the rest of the series this weekend or next week. This volume was more of a "filler" volume more than anything. It did finish the Emerald Witch arc and Undertaker is becoming a far more interesting character to me. The ending bit was funny with all the character trying to get there way to the top, but nothing too crazy with this one!

Great Mey-Rin cover. The art is as always just lovely through out and the Emerald Witch arc finally wraps up. Ciel and company successfully get her out of Germany along with Wolfman who lives long enough to get to medical help to save him.

Once in England, Ciel and Sebastian have to train her to properly meet Queen Victoria and convince her that she's no longer a threat. Ciel bribes her with the ideas of being able to study and do as much science as she wants. I liked that.

However this is a short volume in many ways. The new arc doesn't begin. Instead the fan voting for most popular characters was made into a rather long 'short story' within the volume. It's quite silly and fun but at the end of the day didn't do much for me.

Looking forward to the next arc.

This volume is just too self-indulgent. Nothing of importance happens as the creator slowly, slowly, slowly clears the stage of details left over from the just-ended excursion to Germany detailed in previous volumes. The final chapter is a horrible waste of time wherein the most popular characters (as chosen in a fan contest) are shoehorned into what I assume is supposed to be a comic situation.

C.104 - C.108 Contando con el capítulo adicional con la votación de los personajes por el capítulo 100 que termina con los favoritos fue divertidísimo. A la vez se da por finalizado el Arco de la Bruja Verde y comienza a mostrarse más cosas sobre el Undertaker que no prometen nada bueno.

C.104 - Comienza mostrando el pasado de Wolfram… ¿Estaban criando niños soldados?
Wolfram comenzó sin realmente querer estar cuidando de Sullivan pero terminó encariñándose con ella y encontró una familia a quien querer proteger…

Realmente me alegro que lo hayan llevado con ellos y lo hayan podido tratar, por un momento pensé que murió.

“Tu eres la persona en quién menos puedo confiar” Con todo lo del contrato uno pensaría lo contrario, pero teniendo en cuenta que Sebastian puede comerse el alma de Ciel en cualquier momento si así quiere dice mucho… Aunque no se si el termino de “persona” es dicho a propósito o no…

C.105 - “Y pensar que ellos seguían vivos cuando iban hacia Inglaterra” ¿¡Como!? Se suponía que morirían ahí???

“Si el equilibrio del mundo llegase a colapsar… podría causar una gran guerra en todo el planeta” Sascha simplemente previo la Primera Guerra Mundial… Es interesante cómo la Yana está viendo sucesos antes de La Primera Guerra Mundial, como la invención del gas venenoso y el tanque militar.

Los Shinigamis son personas que se suicidaron, recuerdo eso de hace tiempo, no estoy segura si lo mencionaron antes en el manga o anime pero era un spoiler que ví hace tiempo y lo tomé como un dato que ya sabía. ¿Una vez sean perdonados mueren totalmente?

Undertaker en Francia??? y llorando por Vincent… esto realmente me da mucho que pensar, la forma en la que hablan está claro que se conocieron, cosa que se sabía pero aún así, parece que no fue una relación sólo de Informante y cliente…
Es idea mía o Undertaker quería resucitar a Vincent? Por eso se lamentó que sus huesos quedarán hechos cenizas?? Y de ahí que comenzara con esos experimentos…

“el Conde Phantomhive aún sigue con nosotros” Se refiere al verdadero Ciel no?

C.106 - Sullivan mi niña jaja pobre de ella aún le queda mucho que aprender, pero es bien tierna. No puedo negarlo, pero la relación de Sullivan y Wolfram de conmueve; es algo muy bonito y fraternal.

C.107 - Lo digo de nuevo, que tierna Sullivan, por fin puede ver el mundo más allá del bosque, sus reacciones son justo como lo imaginé, y Wolfram también reaccionando junto a ella…

NINAAA!!! Esta es una gran sorpresa… JAJA esa forma de ignorar a Sebastian, y de quemarlo por el vestido de Sullivan jaja ay no, amo las interacciones de Sebastian con Nina, como siempre le lleva la contraria jaja

“Es bueno que Miss Sullivan tiene un cabello bastante largo” Sullivan: procede a cortarlo. JAJAJA por que me identifiqué? Se ve muy linda… pobre Sebastian le está dando algo jaja

Acabo de notar, Sullivan está caminando!!!

Alguien ya dele un aumento a Sebastian, ahora también tendrá que enseñarle a Wolfram… Ay dios, pobre de Wolfram y Sullivan, la enseñanza de Sebastian es infernal jaja es tan... él. Nunca deja de hacer reír con sus métodos.

Oh no… Lizzie los vio, y todavía se malinterpreta bastante jaja aunque me alegro que al final se lleven bien, igual Lizzie sigue sin caerme bien por lo que supe de capítulos siguientes… Pero si Lizzie supiera lo que hizo Sullivan en la aldea y lo que le propuso a Ciel…. La mata o a el.

"la confrontación con el tanque fué menos peligrosa" que cruel Ciel pero en cierta forma lo entiendo. Y pensar que en la primera aparición de Lizzie el Ciel casi se la madrea, que rápido se invirtieron los papeles

C.108 - Eso no fue un sueño, Undertaker sí estuvo ahí!!! ¿¡Que le dio a Ciel!? Ciel por un momento no tuvo el contrato!!, hasta Sebastian se sorprendió.

Ya me he spoileado con lo de ese gemelo, tiene el mismo mirar que el de Vincent para mí que es su alma, pensaba que la imagen en negro podría ser el gemelo, ya que cuando se mostró nunca se mostró el ojo que debería contener el sello del contrato a parte del diseño en la ventana es distinto, puede que Ciel esté conectado a él o en realidad Undertaker visitó a Ciel, no el gemelo RCiel.

Últimamente andan mencionando que Ciel es muy parecido a su padre…

First, of all: WHAT DID UNDERTAKER PUT INTO CIEL. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT. WHAT DID HE DO TO MY CHILD. Although I must say... I'm extremely intrigued to see what will happen. There's that small, evil, fangirl-y part of me that hopes Ciel will become weak and helpless like he did back in the Emerald Witch arc...

I died laughing when Lizzie saw Ciel on the floor with Sully and for real instantly tried to drop-kick him into the Otherworld with the look of a true devil on her face.
And then Ciel's comment after made it 100x better: "I was more resigned to dying just now than when up against that tank..."

I love how Prince Soma and Lizzie embrace Sully and are all having a good time, but then there's Ciel over in the corner like: -_- i am surrounded by idiots

Fun bonus chapter, but I much would have rather gotten more to the actual story. I mean, there was that total cliffhanger ending! I'm in panic. Luckily, I have the next volume, but it's the last one!! I'm all caught up with this series... *cries* (This next volume better be the bomb.com and better not have a killer ending because I will flip a table.)
That bonus chapter was ridiculously extra xD I was expecting a few gags and other random, silly stuff, but instead I got characters constantly breaking the fourth wall, serpent monsters, duals, and sassy commentaries, as per use.

Anyway, those character rankings are BS! What is Charles Grey doing in the TOP 6?? That spot should be reserved for Finny, my precious child. And there's a bunch of other characters I think should be higher up *cough* Snake and Mey-Rin *cough* and some I think are a bit too high *cough* Undertaker *cough*

But that's none of my business. *casually sips tea*

Next Black Butler over and done with!

I’m getting more in love with the character Sullivan, The Emerald witch. And her companion Wolfram! We ended in a cliffhanger in the last book where I thought Wolfram was done for, but he gets helped here. So YAY!

Basically we follow them as they flee Germany, hang out with Ciel’s dads old friend (I do not like the look with that mustache, my guy…), and then flee to England. Now, Sullivan is extremely intelligent and has figured out how to make an extremely poisonous gas, so that’s what everyone wants from her. But here she learns how to play that to her advantage without actually giving out what kind of gas she invented.

So maybe we got yet another character to Ciel’s household? I wouldn’t mind honestly. Both Sullivan and Wolfram are really nice characters! I love Wolframs constant struggles with english! It’s cute!

And the rules and shit you had to go through before you were fit to even approach Queen Victoria, goodness… But here we get to meet Queen Victoria again! I kinda like her, I will admit. Toboso really played up the fact that she mourned her Prince Albert for so many years.

The other characters keep being awesome too!

There was a bit of an interlude at the end here though. The last chapter had nothing to do with the rest of the story. They had a competition where readers could vote on the most popular character. And then they made a comic with these characters! And depending on how popular you were, the more screen time you got. Kinda neat!

So all in all a very nice read! We still got a lot of plots to solve, and now with Ciel and Sebastian behind her back I’m sure Sullivan will be a bit of a force to reckon with!

Not the strongest of them so far, but definitely enjoyable!

Sometimes it's just fun to enjoy morally gray stories.
Black Butler is a dark and stylistic tale of revenge seeking and the lengths one will go when they have nothing left to lose. Set in the backdrop of Victorian England this series actually fits in the detective genre with it's very young protagonist working to solve mysteries with his not so normal butler and house servants. Aside from the main mystery, Ciel also works for the Queen of England, policing the underground element of society. What should be a dark and depressing story is actually surprisingly light and even comical at times. Thanks to a whole cast of colorful fleshed out characters, a surprisingly inventive setting and plot points that seem to come out of no where, I'm still reading the manga to this day as each chapter comes out, excited to see what crazy story line is coming next and how it'll be resolved with Ciel and Sebastian's unorthodox methods. That's not to say this series is perfect, there is one very large glaring flaw that I will get into shortly.

C’est avec ce tome 22 que l’arc de la sorcière verte prend fin. Il est également agrémenté d’un chapitre bonus qui résulte du vote pour les personnages les plus populaires de la série.
Nous retrouvons donc notre groupe qui a échappé au village et qui se dirige le plus vite possible vers l’Angleterre afin de rencontrer la Reine Victoria et aussi de commencer une nouvelle vie pour Sarivan et Wolfram. L’humour est toujours présent avec des personnages secondaires excentriques et haut en couleur. On découvre aussi les enjeux qui résultent de l’invention de Sarivan et les risques que cela pourrait produire.
Concernant le chapitre bonus, qui dit Vicomte de Druitt dit anguille sous roche, et cela n’a pas manqué. La célébration du classement s’est transformée en foire d’empoigne loufoque. On ne change pas des personnages narcissiques comme le Vicomte. En tout cas, ça a le mérite d’être très amusant en attendant le nouvel arc qui débutera dans le prochain opus.
Pour conclure, je suis toujours fan de la série et des personnages. La qualité des dessins est toujours présente. Encore un tome qui se lit vite et m’a fait passé un bon moment de détente.

A little slower than some of the other volumes, I still give it four stars for its beauty, character development, and a particularly suspenseful scene involving the Undertaker. This was more character driven than recent books, centering around the witch, Ciel, Sebastian, Lizzy, Snake, Finny, and Queen Victoria. Their interaction was developed in a peaceful interval between the action and drama we’ve been experiencing in Black Butler lately. Concentrating on the lighter aspects of this series was both a welcome breath of fresh air and an unwelcome jolt to a stop after the constant intrigue and darkness. The characters continue to be compelling, the artwork is gorgeous, and the more playful comedic side is expressed, which is as much a part of Black Butler as the darkness and angst. One of the things that makes this series so complex is that it’s all of these things; dark, dramatic, comedic, beautiful, character driven, and loaded with action. This volume leaned more towards the lighter, comedic elements. This made it not quite as arresting as other books have been for me, but it swayed the balance back in the direction of other aspects which are a vital part of it.

The aftermath of the Emerald Witch arc has Ciel and Sebastian bring Sullivan back to England to meet Queen Victoria - but first Sebastian must turn her into a lady. So happy that they managed to save Wolf! And we get a nice snippet of back story for him too.

There's loads here to enjoy - I love the foreshadows of WW1 and doesn't Dierdrich look strangely like Hitler... hmmmm. There's some nice Reaper stuff in here too - like how humans become reapers and the very welcome return of Grelle and the Undertaker. We get reference to past arcs and hints at the Undertaker's plans to come... oooh.

To end with there's a bonus story set around the character popularity poll issued for the 100th chapter of the series (which appeared in the last volume) - The top 6 ranking characters... and any others with a 6 in their position (16th, 46th etc...) all appear and we get a very silly story dominated by Viscount Druitt. This is pure fan service and ridiculously silly after the epic Emerald Witch story arc - still if you like the characters of the series then you'll enjoy it.

I still thoroughly enjoyed this volume but it was definitely slower than others. I know this was the end of the arc so that's to be expected. The end of the Emerald Witch arc was satisfactory; I enjoyed the introduction of other Grim Reapers as well as the return of Grelle and William. This cover was so good but I also feel like we need more scenes of sniper Mey-Rin but that's me.

I'm so intrigued about the eluding to more of Vincent Phantomhive's backstory and I hope we get to see more about it soon.

The bonus chapter to celebrate the 100th serialized chapter with the fan-voted top 10 characters was ridiculous in the most Black Butler way possible. The rankings, though they are not all exactly where I would place them *cough* Grey *cough*, I'm not shocked by any of them. And it give us another Vincent scene (can you tell I like Vincent) as well as the Undertaker so I'll take it.

Overall, amazing artwork per usual, great characters, a good ending to this arc and multiple open questions, but didn't fully hit the mark.
