For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. ~
Newton’s Third Law of Motion

Brandon “Brand” Carmichael’s life was the stuff dreams were made of…too bad it was an illusion. As a guitarist for Inert Motion, Brand traveled the world, performing with his brothers in all but blood. He never stopped moving all the while his mind played in a never ending loop. Now outside influences have changed the band’s course, leaving Brand’s life void of the balance he craved. Once again, his dream had become a recurring nightmare. Brand coped the only way he knew how; retreat into solitude.

Magdalena “Layna” Delacroix had achieved the long sought goal of her Ph.D. in Psychology, but success came at a high over one hundred thousand dollars in debt. After being presented with the opportunity to fulfill her desire to help someone in the aftermath of tragedy, along with earning enough money to clear her debt and start a psychology practice of her own, Layna had to balance the means against the outcome. Could she be the force to stop the downward spiral of someone who refused to seek help?

Neither Brand nor Layna expected the reaction they had to one another. It was the opposite of everything they sought.

Could Layna live a lie while pushing Brand to live in the truth?

Would Brand forgive her for committing one unforgivable sin?

Or was he branded by destiny to be...

4 Paying Attention Stars * * * *

This was a find on NetGalley. It seemed to call to me as I read the blurb; a rocker who has secrets held from all of his band mates who he feels is family. He has been pulling away from them and no one knows what to do. He meets a young woman who happens to have moved in across the hall. They develop a budding friendship.... but there are secrets she is hiding as well.

So as I pondered whether to read this, I decided to see what developed.

I am glad I did. The reading was very easy to feel... the author gave me all the understanding I needed for this Man/boy... Because that was what Brand was...He was a in a man's body with the innocence and awkwardness of a 16 year old when it came to women.

Brand was this guy...part of a pretty successful band. He was able to get around in his hometown due to being "part" of the band... not the main front players. This group of fellas were as close to him as blood brothers; for 13 years, since college, they were a unit...always the guys before any women... never to break that code.

Until they all did....each one has found their other half...slowly they all have either married or started to live together and be serious with the one they care for....leaving Brand feeling abandoned and alone in a crowd.

At least he can talk with his brother Barrett.... they stopped communicating for awhile but they are back in touch and Brand will do anything to keep him by his side now.

As the band is on hiatus from touring, Brand is even more isolated. He goes for periods of drifting...time passing and he seems unreachable by his mates or anyone else. This causes huge concern by the guys... they love him and want him to be who he was before all this pulling away.

The first part of the book opens with shouting and cursing from a voice outside Brand's condo. It takes him out of his daze and goes to the door to see what the deal is...there in the hallway are groceries scattered all over the floor with a young woman leaning on the wall with one foot being held by her hands as she balances on the other. Brand doesn't know what to make of this as he sees her there...He sort of remembers the last person leaving...as he takes in this long legged, curvy woman. He tries to figure out what to say and she looks at him like he is dense... more cursing for the pain... and he goes to help her into the apartment. He settles her down, does everything a "gentleman" would do... as he says his parents raised him with manners, after all....and finds himself in this apartment looking at this woman and shock of shock...feeling a bit aroused.

Layna's foot is killing her. She dropped a massive jar of pickles on it and it may be broken...at least this is what this guy keeps telling her...
She cannot get rid of him; he keeps insisting on taking her to get a an xray...he is good looking but not in your face about it and since he trying to be nice by getting her ice and pain pills, she finally lets him take her to urgent care.

It seems he was right and crutches, meds and future Dr.visits happen. Layna and Brand start to have a friendship beginning and Brand doesn't even understand how it happened...Barrett is encouraging him to allow himself to have some relaxed fun time... to loosen up...and even threatens to pull away again if he doesn't just go for it...so Brand does...He opens up with Layna and little by little he becomes more comfortable with her.

We are in Brand's head... and it is a very complex place. He is a man who has deep rage about things from the past. He has shutdown most things which guys do on a daily basis...and focused mostly on trying to be one of the guys in his band...but with the dynamics changing... he is lost.
With this new thing of Layna... we get to hear him thinking of just how to handle everyday things...normal stuff which seem kind of hard for him...which reminds us of how he talks of not knowing or having "game" like the other guys...It is sweet, innocent and geeky charming.

Layna is a sharp, witty and insightful person. She is not intimated with the rock star status or the other band members...she is sarcastic and holds her own. She is not really forthcoming about herself and seems to have her own secrets she is hiding.

What is happening, though, is both of them are falling for each other and taking it very slow.

This was a short book but what it put into place kept me interested. There was a very big picture happening and all of the foundation was laid to allow it to build and then come together in the end. Although my mystery reading past lead me through most of the book, there were parts I was not clued into. When it all came together, it was a bit of a rush but I let it pass. To have done more would have turned it into a 3 part series and for me... sometimes a stand alone is a joy.

I like what the author presented; I will look for more from Libby Austin...she has a clear cut voice and knows how to do dialogue and characters. I will keep an eye out.

~~~ Before Reading ~~~
Hmmmm, Brooding Rocker...has a secret even his bros from the band don't know...
Very cool chick moves in next door during the break in his touring....
I am thinking a friendship to smoldering romance may take place....
But you know they both have secrets....so how will that play out....
I have to start my review stating right away that this book had me at hello! Maybe it was the story or maybe the characters or even the narrative style, i don't know. What i do know though, is that the moment i started reading it, i knew i had to finish it in one sitting.
And that's what happened. Reft is beautiful, Reft is nicely written and a bit darkish. It certainly puts the reader into a state trying endlessly to guess what's the big secret and i loved not knowing, but in the end the secrets were a big surprise.
A few words about the main characters now, Brand -Brandy Handy, yes that's his nickname- is a member of a well known rock band, he is a multi-talented person, but carries too many secrets inside his heart and mind. For him everything was going great until his band-mates, started falling in love, one by one. On a break from touring and recording, he starts feeling alone again and his nightmares are coming back with a vengeance.
Layna is Brand's new neighbor, she is smart, beautiful, stubborn and funny but she holds an even bigger secret than Brand. They will come closer to each other and ultimately they will fall for each other, but their past connects them in a vicious way. How it will work out in the end? Love or hate? Pain or redemption?
I really loved this book, mostly because it was fun and had a very good flow. The secret part was absolutely mind-blowing and unexpected, but in my opinion a bit too much. Still though, i had a great time while reading it and i would love to read more from this author.
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK
- I love Jocker and Ruff, another unexpected aspect in this book.
- Bow is the ultimate archetype of the crude, loud, egomaniac rock star, but has a sweet heart, i'm sure.
- I want books for the rest of the band.
- Brand's inexperience was very refreshing.
- I also loved that he was a normal person and not over the top at all.
- Patsy, that girl was the most loveable diva dog, ever.
- His brother. I thought he sounded so cool at first, then i read the truth and my heart broke.
3 "Reality is relative." Stars
After noticing this book cover on Netgalley and reading the blurb I was quite intrigued. I'm glad I requested the title and have read. It wasn't a favorite for me but I enjoyed the time I spent reading Reft.
The plot of this story is very unique, told solely from the point of view of the hero, Brandon Carmichael. I loved this aspect, being inside Brandon's head was a total experience. He's a damaged soul hiding his pain and his true self from the world. Solitude amongst chaos he prefers rather than chaos in his personal life. The detailed writing of his thoughts lent itself as a more cryptic plot device giving clues throughout about what might have happened to Brand but never revealing the whole truth to the reader. This proved intriguing and kept me glued to the pages.
The heroine of Reft, Layna, proves to be seemingly predictable to the plot. I had her figured out almost straight away but I enjoyed her just as well. Her ways of handling Brand and his quirks, her love of good banter, or just how she treats silent moments proved to be really great moments in the book. And there were a lot of really great moments between the two to make this enjoyable. Brand's band mates were great additions as secondary characters as well lending some humor to the book and also a nice glimpse in the stability and love Brand has in his life.
Everything added up to a story I'm glad I read one which held my attention and intrigued me. I thought the conflict came rather quick and the result of that conflict resolved the story. I thought there were some clues left throughout that didn't quite add up in the end, maybe that was purposeful I'm not sure. And the ending underwhelmed me a bit. I was hoping for a bit ... more, from Layna especially. But overall I enjoyed and think anyone interested in a unique, contemporary romance would get an enjoyable read from Reft.
Never expected a story like this!
This book is about the whirlwind of consequences that take place after a tragedy occurs. It’s a rocker romance only in the sense that the characters are in a band and they tour. That’s it. Reft focuses on a great cast of characters who become all mixed up in its aftermath.
So many lives become affected during the years that follow and the domino effect comes full circle at the end of this story. I was really taken back with all the twists and turns—and the major reveal in the final chapter. It made me realize how we all have the power to change a bad situation, and what happens when we connect with those who were involved, and make something great out of it.
I‘m sure I sound completely cryptic, but just know that this is a heartbreaking story that deals with such profound grief and guilt that one of the MC’s, Brandon Carmichael (Reft), winds up being institutionalized after he couldn’t make the distinction between reality or imagination anymore as it was Barrett, his twin brother’s tragedy.
I thought I had the plot figured out, but I was very wrong. This book has a great cast of characters, the writing was flawless, and although it was bittersweet, I’m glad it ended the way it did. I highly recommend this one.
This is my first book by this author and the writing is excellent. It is told in the H's pov and is available through Kindle Unlimited. This is the kind of book that is best to go into without spoilers or it doesn't work. Unfortunately I figured the plot out around 10% and missed the wow factor but the rest of the read was enjoyable and kept my interest.
Brandon is a member of a rock band who is off the road for rest and relaxation when he meets his new neighbor Layla. They become fast friends after she breaks her foot in the hallway and he helps her out. As their friendship progress they start to fall in love. Brandon has lots of secrets from his past he has not shared with anyone including his band mates although they suspect he isn't doing well. His brothers as he calls them have his back and are there for him when the secrets come out. Layla is also there for him but they take a little more time to work through their relationship issues to get their HEA. I highly recommend.
This is my first Libby Austin experience. This book was sweet and innocent but quite predictable so I was starting to lose focus than bam had a moment of surprise which made it more intriguing in the end.
As I was reading it I felt like I was missing information within the whole book about the other band mates. Throughout the book we were given bits and pieces how they all came together but it felt more like when you read a standalone book part of a series where they summarize so you don't feel like you were missing anything. At times this made it feel disjointed and random. Facts about characters were given way after the characters were introduced making it a bit harder to get into.
Brandon “Brand” Carmichael has some issues and his band is trying to intervene but don't know where to go for help. Magdalena “Layna” Delacroix is his new neighbor and the spark that helps him want to get better and move forward.
Brand's a bit stuck in time but with Layna he's finally exploring new things. The more he explores the more he heals and moves forward but then his past comes to the forefront and all hell breaks loose causing Brand not to be able to trust and forgive easily.
It takes awhile for Brand to comes to terms with his past so he is able to finally move forward.
"I know enough, and it doesn't feel like I'm rushing into anything. Just the opposite, it feels like I've been waiting my entire adult life for you."
It was one of those books that is sweet but a bit forgettable. It didn't make the impact I would have liked. However, I am intrigued enough to read more from this author.
I fell in love with Libby Austin's unique writing style with her Infinity series so I was anxious to see what she brought to the table with Reft. I was intruiged by the cover and synopsis and I also knew that Reft would be quite different from the Infinity series. What I didn't know was that Reft would take me through twists and turns that I didnt see coming, and capture my heart more than Austin's previous books.
One of the things that I loved most about this book is it is different. It isnt the same ole storyline of bad boy rocker romance, where the playboy hero does something stupid and tries to redeem himself. No, Brandon Carmichael may be hiding a secret but he is far from a playboy and he has a heart of gold. He is more of a sweet, innocent 16 year old boy trapped in a man's body. Sexy and successful are two character traits that Brandon has, but doesnt flaunt. He opts to spend his time alone, secluding himself from woman and his bandmates, suffering over his past. That is until Layna comes along.....
Layna is a heroine that I love. She is quirky, fun, and intelligent. Just what Brand needs to get him out of the solitude that he prefers. Layna moves into the condo across the hall from Brand and the two slowly develop a friendship. Something that Brand craved, but wasnt familiar with either. Layna was everything that he didnt know he wanted or needed. Watching the relationship evolve between the two of them made my heart happy. Brand seemed to be getting better and happier the more he spent time with Layna.
But, things arent always as they appear and Layna has a secret of her own. Secrets that could destroy Brand and their relationship. And for the last 25% of the book Libby Austin hits you with twist and turn after twist and turn. NOTHING that you could possibly see coming. At all. So what happens when the actions of your past come back to haunt your future? Can they forgive and forget and try to move forward? Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Libby's writing has definitely developed since the release of her first book. Her dialogue is witty and fun. Character development is well thought out and the plot moves at a steady pace. And the plot twists!!!!!! Man does she throw you through a loop. From the prologue you know there's a secret, a big one at that. I was enthralled with reft from the very first page and I highly recommend that you pick up a copy, strap on a seatbelt, and enjoy the ride that is Reft!
When I started to read this book I expected a story including a typical manly, handsome and frankly protagonist who finds his challenge in the surprisingly refreshing Layna who isn't afraid to speak about the things she has in her mind.
When the story developed you get to know not only the two protagonists, also other characters(especially important the brother of Brandon). During the course of action it's obvious that there are "some" problems from the past which influence the present a lot which is in my opinion perfectly presented in the characterization of Brandon who tries to appear strong, but on the inside you are congronted with doubts and fears.
At first it seems like he learns to deal with it, so it gets easier and easier when Layna surrounds him, but then there is this special and very important point....which doesn't only change the plot...also they way how you see the book as a reader(or how I see it).
I thought about this a lot, but came to the conclusion that this is something I need to point out here: in my opinion the change came so abruptly that it was difficult to believe this is actually happening. Before this point, the story felt natural and comprehensible, but frome there on, I just thought: This is totally not what I expected! That does not mean that I am not able to cope with such an ending, but it's not the ending at all, moreover the point which let to the final pages including a touching and sensitive ending which was perfect in reference to the things I have read before the turning point. Of course you know that there has to happen something, but I wished the way the solution is introduced to the reader would have been a different one...
However, at the end I was happy to have read the book which shows something I haven't seen before, but I am sure future-readers are going to see as well....
It would be interesting to get to see some scenes through the eyes of Layna who I really like even after the things happening during the course of action. The way she challenges him is something which made me smile a lot.. :)
It saddens me to say I was disappointed with this book. The synopsis intrigued me and the beginning held so much promise, but quickly I realised that not a lot was happening. I think the main problem being that the entire book is told in Brand's point of view. Now whilst I accept that chapters told in Layna's view could be problematic, having read the entire story, but I do think it would have given us more insight into her personality, because to me she came across as bolshy and not someone I could relate to.
As for Brand, it was hard to imagine him as a grown man, because his personality at times was that of a 16 year old boy. I also couldn't understand Brand's aversion to women or the lack of sexual feelings, despite this being explained towards the end of the book. From the very beginning we are told that something very traumatic has happened to Brand, but we are given absolutely no clue as to what that is until near the end. Now this normally would be a good thing, because this book is not predictable in any way, but as a reader I feel that we need more to hold our interest. Suspense and intrigue is key to a book like this and I felt they were both missing.
As I've already mentioned, the lack of excitement for much of this book made it hard to get into the story and too much focus was placed on minute details that I just felt didn't add to the story. I didn't feel much chemistry between the couple, even sexual chemistry was absent.
Now once the story reached a conclusion, I did think that the overall basis of a story was good, but some of the details didn't feel plausible to me. So my overall opinion is that this book isn't for me, but the story as a whole has potential.
4 1/2 Stars
I found this book to be very unique. Brandon is a rock star but in profession only, no sex or drugs in his life. Just an unnatural desire to become a recluse. When the feisty fowl mouthed Layna shows up at the condo complex not only as his new neighbor but one who managed to break her foot at their first meeting, Brandon's inner gentleman decided to help her out, but nothing is what it seems.
For more than half the book I was trying to figure out Brandon's demons and believe me it is worth getting there. This story has some very light moments and Brandon's introduction by Layna to the Rocky Horror Picture
Show was very funny. I found Layna to be a breath of fresh air as the non filtered sarcastic did I mention fowl mouthed female in an almost role reversal, whereas so many rock star books portray the females as door mats for the "manwhore" ,definitely not this one.
The only reason I gave this book 4 1/2 stars and not 5 was the band. They are introduced in the story as if they had been part of a prequel or previous book which made me think I was missing something but that's not the case, a shame really as I found them very funny and loyal to a fault even the damn dog
I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
Reft by Libby Austin is a good read. I sat down with it and read it from beginning to end in one sitting. The book is a slow, sweet read with a big bomb at the end. Brandon is a troubled musician with a big secret. The reader spends the first half of the book trying to figure out just what’s going on with him, why is he withdrawing away from his band, the only family he has. As Brandon struggles with his own problems in drops Layna. She is beautiful and funny and slowly starts to draw him out of his shell and into the land of the living.
Both characters are very mysterious and atypical. Brandon is a rock star who is quiet, macho and sensitive. Layna is loving, generous, loud and foul-mouthed. Seeing them slowly fall for each other is fun.
The book grabs you and hooks you in with the mystery and you keep reading to see if you think you have it figured out. By the end things go really crazy super-fast (my only problem with the book) but things are resolved by the last page and we get to see Brandon healed and loved.
Thoughts on this book:
~ The prologue was an intriguing way the start of the story. I liked that it gave nothing away in regards to the storyline.
~ Brandon was such a sweet character. Loved him!
~ I liked that, apart from the prologue, the story was told from one pov (Brandon). Even though Layna is the other main character of this book, you don't get to see anything from her perspective which by the end, I liked - it would have spoiler so much if her pov was written as well.
~ Barrett was a twist to the storyline that I didn't see coming.
~ I liked that Brandon kept things from the reader but also something big was kept from him and we got to experience it with him.
This book has a LOT of bombshells, one dropped after another. Your heart goes out to Brand/Brandon, and everything he's been through.
You have a lot of things thrown at you from midway to the end of the book, and it's a lot to comprehend and get through.
I didn't like in the end that everyone was mad because Brandon had hurt Layna, when it was actually her hurting him.
This was an okay book, it just went from a slow easy read to very hectic and smashed together in the end.
Written from male POV
Reft was a pretty good story. The plot was unique to me. Some of the plot was predicable but there were some twists at the end. The characters were developed and likable. We have the virgin hero Brandon who was sweet and hiding big secrets from the people he is closest to. He is not your typical rockstar. Layna is the foul mouthed new neighbor. She is also hiding big secrets. The writing was good. The dialogue between Brandon and Layna really clued eas at times sweet and funny. This a surprisingly good find.
I never saw it coming!
I really am glad that I came across the book. It honestly is a book worth reading! (I hope it turns into a series because I would like to know what happened/happens to the rest of the band.)
It was a fast read for me because I was so riveted. I kept telling myself “just ONE MORE chapter”. When you think you have it figured out the author hits you with the biggest bolt out of the blue! I want to read it again and see if there were any clues I missed.
I really don't want to tell you the story because that’s not what I do. I'll just recommend you read it.
It started with, of all things, a dropped jar of pickles. Which when dropped on a foot can result in some loud swearing and broken bones. This was Brand’s first impression of Layna – well of her butt actually as she tried to pick up spilled groceries while hopping on a probably busted foot. All because of a damned pickle jar. Odd way to meet – but, hey, whatever works.
Brand lives in a very exclusive building, with tight security so he was surprised to find a lovely lady with a very foul mouth hopping around in pain right outside of his apartment door. Turns out Layna is his new neighbor. He does the nice guy thing, helping her get into her apartment, r-i-c-e for her injured foot and picks up her scattered food from the hallway. Brand is very, very much a loner so it’s a big deal for him to even notice Layna was in trouble let alone help her out. Seeing she is still in a lot of pain, he finally convinces her to let him take her to an urgent care for that foot — which was broken.
So begins our story of a man who is a member of a popular band coming to grips with his fellow band-mates pairing off into couples and to his mind messing up their group. Cos you cannot trust a female to not mess up a good thing.
I don’t really know how to get into too much more than a brief introduction to Reft without giving away more than I’m willing to give.
This novel is a journey taken in steps, slowly unfolding and emotional from the first page to the last. Brand is more than what we see on the surface at first. Like an onion, there is layer upon layer upon layer to this man. It has not, by any means, been an easy journey for Brand. He’s been through hell, as we will gradually find out.
Layna is foul mouthed, bubbly, easy to talk to and seems to be the perfect woman for Brand. She is all of that… and more. She holds the key to his happiness in her hands. Question is… will it last forever?
I read through Reft in one sitting. Each time I thought I came to a spot where I could step away – I had to keep on to know what was happening next. There are indications, clues, hints all through this novel about what is happening… will you see them before the ending, maybe or maybe not. I was looking for them, some are obvious others more subtle.
This is a highly emotional, deep on so many levels, while coming off at first as a light romance novel. It is a powerful read, treat it that way and you won’t be disappointed at all. I loved Brandon, he is walking wounded but I was rooting for him throughout this story. Layna was a charmer, I enjoyed her but all the while I kept thinking, “Oh do not hurt him, do not harm this man.” You will become emotionally involved in this one. I don’t see how that can be avoided at all.
I know I haven’t given you much to go on — but yes, you should pick this novel up at or soon after release. It is an excellent novel of survival and love and doing what is best for those you love – no matter what. It is simply amazing.
*I received an e-ARC of Reft from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
The Ultimate Fan Blog’s Review of Reft by Libby Austin
Libby Austin first captured my heart with her Through Infinity series. You can imagine the joy I felt when she asked me if I wanted to read and review her new book, Reft. There was no question about it…..yes!
When I read the synopsis I was intrigued to say the least. It appeared to be very different from her other series but it was definitely just as catching. Within the first few pages it has you hooked so just be warned, get comfortable and enjoy the ride.
The beginning sets the scene a little bit in that it gives you a few snippets of “behind the scenes” so to speak. You’ll realize what I’m talking about soon enough. We meet Brandon or Brand Carmichael, guitarist for the band Inert Motion. It seemed that Brandon was becoming a bit of a recluse. At one time he was touring the world with his band and then it was time for a break. You can tell that he has a lot he’s trying to deal with and this is the only way he knows how. Then in stumbles Layna……literally.
Layna moves in next door to Brandon. She crashes into his life like a freight train, snarky attitude and everything. She has injured her foot and Brandon steps in to try and help. Layna is a little put out about the whole situation but accepts his help because he doesn’t give her any other choice. Brandon starts coming out of his little box by helping Layna and you hope that all is well. Keep dreaming! There’s an attraction between the two and they start spending time together. Brandon prefers her company over his band mates. His band mates on the other hand are not willing to be shunned so they start hanging out together. I loved his friends and would like to see more of them in the future. They are all a truly caring bunch.
I have to mention here that one of my favorite (and most exasperating) moments in a book is a having a good old twist thrown in the mix. I of course can’t mention what that twist may be so you’ll have to get the book! I want to end this review by again thanking Libby Austin for sending this to me for a review. She has once again proven how talented and awesome she is as an author!
ARC gifted in exchange for an honest review.
So I have to say I didn't really know what I was getting into and this book almost lost me. Just about the time I thought it would, things started flowing. Events started happening fast. At first I felt it was happening too fast but when you have someone that has been as closed off as Brandon, I guess I could see feelings coming fast for him.
Sometimes a tragedy happens that changes the course of events in someone's life. Then healing and moving forward start to take place and eventually people reconcile what happened that made them change. Except for Brandon, it didn't. Scarred by the events of his past, Brandon just stops living. He goes through the motions of every day life but doesn't actually deal with his grief and what caused him to be the way he is today.
Then he meets Layna and it all changes. Slowly they form a friendship or a bond that allows him to open up to someone else. As this bond grows stronger between them, his feelings do too.
This book wasn't at all what I expected but it was something completely different. It was hope and growing and learning to move forward for someone that had simply refused to do so. This book touched me on so many different levels.
All in all, this was a good read. I wanted some more "feels" from both of the characters because the subject matter was heavy and while I get that Brandon was healing, I still didn't feel like he dealt with the tragedy. I also wanted more than being told that they were in love with each other. While their relationship was a slow build and I got they developed feelings, I didn't feel those feelings like I wanted to.
I did like this book and would find myself reading something else by this author.
4.5 Stars
In the beginning it was plan to see that Brand was struggling. He was slowly removing himself from those that mean the most to him. Tired of hiding behind a mask pretending that all was good. The events from long ago are still sitting very heavy on Brand and he is hoping some time away will make it right. Brand has missed out on so much and it is fun to watch him come out and slowly come into the man he is capable of being. Learning life lessons as he goes.
When Layna moves in next door, Brand decides to step out of the box and see if he can help her. Slowly they start to spend more time together and get to know one another. Soon he is spending more time with her than his band members. They have a fun relaxed nature about the time they are spending with each other.
Layna comes across a very compassionate and soft spoken with Brand. It is almost like she is carefully taking ques from him as to how much to push. What questions to ask. When to leave things alone. But he seems to be completely oblivious. You can see that she is slowly starting to fall for him.
Just as I thought that I was figuring out the story and had a handle on what might happen next, everything is slowly revealed and I was so not heading in the right direction. These new findings are very intriguing and keep you reading and trying then to figure out why and how events have come to light. Libby does a great job of bringing the characters to life and making you feel a closeness to them as you learn their story. Can they overcome the events and still find their way together?
I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
Reft by Libby Austin was such a surprising read. Just when I thought I knew what I was reading, when I thought I knew what this book was about, Libby Austin hit me with a twist in this story that really shocked me.
I was so excited to be on the review team for Libby Austin, I had read other books by her that I loved and expected that this book would be the same. Starting out reading Reft, I could tell there was some kind of underlying issue but, I could not figure out what was going on, at all. Austin was not letting the cat breathe, must less out of the bag. So, I started to think Reft was going to be a "fluff" piece. I. was. wrong.
Brand has something going on in his life. He has been keeping a secret for 13 years, his band mates didn't even know about this secret! When the band takes a break and Brand finds idle time on his hands, his world starts to crumble down around him.
He meets a new neighbor, a beautiful young woman named, Layna. Things seem to just fall into place for them, it is such an easy- go -lucky friendship. Things end up heating up for them and then the big twist, turn, and secrets start happening.... things get a little complicated.
Reft is such a strong emotional book, it gutted me. Austin continues to write outstanding storylines and shows uniqueness in her characters. This isn't your typical love story, this is different, you will fall in love with Brand, because you want to help make everything better. He has the heart of a saint.
I give Reft 5 stars!
First off, I Love-LOVE this cover! The black and white with the bright orange Reft, just catches your eye. I find it to be a simple, sexy and appealing cover.
Reft is a story about Brandon and Layna. Brand is a musician and in a band. He has been carrying a big secret for 13 years, which is making him keep everyone at arms length that he cares about. When the band decides to take a much needed break, everything around Brand starts to fall apart.
Layna is Brandon's new neighbor. She is a foul mouthed, caring, funny and loving person. They meet one day because she was carrying groceries in and the bag breaks and a pickle jar lands on her foot. Brand comes out to help her and a relationship starts to blossom.
The first half of this book I found to be a slow and easy read about a friendship that turns into love. A love that neither Brandon or Layna are looking for but sometimes love hits us hard when we aren't looking for it. You discover they are both hiding things from one another, big and potentially devastating secrets. The second half of this book, a lot of things come at you at once.
Can Layna and Brand reveal their secrets and come clean with one another? Will they be able to deal with what's being uncovered and commit fully or where there be too much hurt once secrets are revealed? Can Brandon start putting everything behind him and dealing with his past so he can get close with his band mates and family again?
Brandon was in a rock band but avoiding his band mates. He craved and had solitude the last couple of months. Layna became his neighbor across the hall. She hurt her foot and Brandon went to help. Brandon didn't get to know people very often. Yet with Layla, he nagged at her to get an x-ray and gave her a piggy-back ride to the car. Brandon's band mates had gotten better halves, which took the freedom away to tour and have day-long jam sessions. Brandon kept women off limits. Barrett was Brandon's twin, his other half to whole. Brandon had a nightmare for the past 13 years. Brandon called Barrett after he woke from the nightmares. Barrett always had a way of making things better. Brandon and his brother hadn't talked in a long time. They started talking again when Brandon realized his surrogate family had been the band and they started having their own lives. He also felt he needed his own blood and best friend from the beginning. He starting reaching out and one day Barrett responded. Brandon and Layna started playing Band Jam together. She promised not to tell anyone what they talk about and what she sees when she's with him.
Brandon had been really messed up from an incident during his youth, but as the story goes on, you root for him as you watch him grow. Layna acted like she was hard, but in reality she was a caring and kind person. This was a great story. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone that likes a book with lots of twists and turns.
4.5 stars! I enjoyed this story that starts off mysteriously, hinting at a secret that is destroying Brandon. I liked Layna a lot. She enters the story with a lot curse words and attitude. Brandon's story is told in first person, yet I never quite connected with him, surprisingly.
Then Barrett, his twin brother, converses with him intermittently, adding to the mystery of what has caused Brandon to shut himself off from other people. The only one he is connecting with is Layna. I liked that they became friends first and didn't rush into anything.
The story at first seemed a bit slow to get going, and the mystery was the one thing that kept me interested. And then it picked up as hints were given. When the secret is revealed, there were a few twists. I almost guessed a couple correctly, but was surprised by two more.
The twists were not a gimmick, but added to the story and gave it more depth and meaning. When a tragedy occurred and Brandon cut himself because he blamed himself, he gets a second chance to heal and move on.
I appreciated that the author wrote of a way for a tragedy to not be in vain. Forgiveness, healing, and facing one's fears can be healing and redeeming.
There is a sex and cursing and romance.
Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is my honest review.
This book is one of those books that you stumble upon- not knowing how it was going to be, so you just take a chance on it. And in this instance, I am so glad that I chose this book. It kept me immersed in the pages and I didn't want it to end.
Brand is a very diverse character in my opinion. I didn't know what to think of him. Or how to take him and that's not typically the norm for me. I can usually pinpoint what I *think* is going on with the main character but Libby went above and beyond to make sure you never figure out the pieces to Brands puzzle until THAT moment. The big one where you gasp out loud because you weren't really expecting the events that come. Brand has definitely been through a lot and he CONTINUOUSLY made my heart bleed for him.
Layna is smart and beautiful and exactly what Brand needs in his life. She is just a very fun character and I loved seeing her and Brand slowly start to fall for each other but, yes there's a but, Layna is not without fault. She has secrets of her own. And this is about the time the secrets of them both start unfolding and once they do, you cannot look away.
I think that this was a truly fantastic book. It had just enough mystery and just enough angst to keep you on your toes, all the while you get to see this amazing love blossom. I definitely recommend it.
Libby Austin has made it to my must read list. She takes a story and makes it wrap itself around your heart and not let go. In Reft we meet Brandon who you know has a secret. Throughout the story Ms. Austin does a great job of keeping you guessing what that secret is but I had not idea until it was revealed. Layna is his new neighbor and even though Brandon leads a pretty solitaire life he ends up spending time with Layna. Layna is a sassy lady and Brandon is a quiet and sensitive. This story is about facing your past and dealing with tragedy and also finding yourself.
The mystery will keep you hooked throughout the story but the relationship that evolves between Brandon and Layna is sweet. The story moved slowly at first but in the last 25% took off but is well written and the story works. Once again Ms. Libby writes a story that is about how in life you need the support of friends and family and you don't have to be alone.
If you want an unique storyline and characters then pick up this book you won't be disappointed. Be prepared to feel many emotions as you discover the life of Brandon.
Reft is so much more than your typical rock star romance book, of bad boy sex rock n roll. Brandon Carmichael (Brand) is a very complex character with a damaged heart. He has been carrying around a lot of pain and anguish for something he blames himself for, that was completely out of his control.
He has a very close relationship with his band mates but they have no idea what has happened to him in his young life.
Brand becomes emotionally distant and soon withdraws himself from his band and the outside world. His band mate desperate to find out how to help him turns to his parents with his concerns.
A young woman, Layna, soon moves in across the hall from Brand, he is immediately drawn to her, which is unusual, he never gets close to any woman. Layna and Brand start out with a quirky friendship that develops over time. This is where the book begins to open up and revealing a lot of secrets
not only about Brand but Layna too.
Reft is a book full shocking revelations, and is intense but worth it to read. I loved Brand, he has an innocents about him that makes him sweet, and your heart hurts for him. This book is one that will make you sit down and think about it long after you have finished it.
