Sometimes medical science can take lives just as easily as it can save them.
A genetically engineered and unstoppable cancer is spreading through Baltimore’s citizens. Doctor Robin Haynes is used to dealing firsthand with this unforgiving disease, but when every medical tool at her disposal fails, she becomes desperate for a cure.
Christopher Morgan is a former illegal genetic enhancement dealer. After paying for his crimes, he’s devoted himself to developing genetic therapies to save lives. He eagerly joins Robin on a quest to engineer a treatment.
As the cancer spreads across the country, Robin and Chris discover the disease may be connected to a criminal organization. With the body count rising, they find themselves embroiled in something deeper than they ever imagined—an underground world of scientific intrigue, organized crime, and medical conspiracies.
They set out to save lives, but now they might lose theirs in the process.
Anthony J Melchiorri is a scientist with a PhD in bioengineering. Originally from the Midwest, he now lives in Texas. By day, he develops cellular therapies and 3D-printable artificial organs. By night, he writes apocalyptic, medical, and science-fiction thrillers that blend real-world research with other-worldly possibility. When he isn't in the lab or at the keyboard, he spends his time running, reading, hiking, and traveling in search of new story ideas.
Genetic enhancements make you stronger, smarter, healthier, and if you got them on the Black Market could make you dead.
Christopher Morgan earned his PHD from Northwestern University in biomedical engineering. But a nice safe job working for a legitimate enhancement company just didn't suit Chris, he decided to go into business for himself making black market enhancements. He was making a fortune until he got caught and went to prison. When he got out he and old partner Jordan Thompson started a legitimate company manufacturing genetic enhancements for dogs. Everything was beginning to look rosy until an obvious enhancer cornered him leaving for work one morning. The man was obviously ill, began convulsing, each muscle trying to tear itself loose from the attached bone, screaming his pain and accusations that this was Chris's fault. The man died badly before the paramedics Chris had called for could help him. The police arriving to investigate were familiar with Chris and he knew them all too well from before he was incarcerated. During his onstreet interrogation they let slip that they were seeing several more cases like this. It seemed to be a contagious cancer affecting enhancers. Contagious cancer!?!? Could it be tied to the enhancements he sold before? In the next few days it became obvious that someone thought he could fix them and kidnapped his old ex-girlfriend to force him to fix the problem.
Genetic enhancements - now that's a sci-fi dream! 90 pound weakling? Get a shot and you're Superman! Can't see your hand in front of your face? Get an injection of programmed nanites to fix your vision! Now you can see clearly for miles and see in pitch black like it's a sunny day. Feeling a little short in your briefs? Get an injection and you're John Holmes! Medical miracles used to clear the zits off your kids face! Black market enhancements were not thoroughly tested and side effects could be wild, but that didn't matter to enhancers in need of a quick fix.
But Chris and his partner Jordan Thompson were trying to go legit. Animal enhancements were a growing and legal market. Someone from the black market enhancers was forcing them to fix the problem. They kidnapped and held Chris's ex-girlfriend to force him. And that's just the beginning of the trouble for Chris and Jordan.
Biomedical machines to perform all kinds of operations are on the cutting edge of medical science. This is a burgeoning niche in the medical research field, and processes, equipment, and the jargon are fresh and accurate, lending believability to the storyline. The characters fit their roles perfectly as the storyline twists them from one problem to another. The background of the story is accurate. I think maybe a story enhancement was used! This is a great read!
The Black Market DNA books continue to be compelling to read and hard to put down. The possible future with genetic enhancements is not hard to believe.
Still not feeling any love for or connection with any character, but would like to see how this group works together in future books so #3 has been added to my KU downloads.
In a continuation of the first book, Enhancement, Chris Morgan is faced with the possibility that people might be dying as a result of black-market enhancements he previously developed. He finds himself, along with his friend Jordan, Officer Ana Dellaporta, and Dr. Robin Haynes, caught up in a race against the clock to figure out the cause of and a cure for the mysterious cancer that is rapidly killing Baltimore's enhancement users.
This is a very good, fast-paced book. I found it more exciting than the first one in the series. I'd definitely recommend it, and I recommend reading the series in order because they do build upon each other.
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This one might not be as good as the first book but it's still a very good read. I think a lot of middle books of a trilogy end up suffering as the middle child and turn out not so good, but for the most part this one is great.
I really enjoy this series and look forward to the end. It has been a great ride so far and it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way.
Really enjoyed reading this book. The story had several good twists, kept moving and strong character s . Quite bad bit of techno medical terms but they didn't bury you even if you d I didn't know what they were it was written in so it was covered good enough for the average reader to flow with it. I enjoyed. Reading this one very much.
