Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future

Rate this book
An unprecedented and intimate account of one of the most business-savvy, influential, and defining icons of our time

Kim Kardashian is a self-made mogul, social media genius, fashion icon, and unlikely advocate for criminal justice reform. But she is also dismissed as a figure of scandal, spectacle, and reality television. The truth is more complicated—and revealing.

Stylish, incisive, and deeply reported, Citizen Kim is a portrait of a woman we think we know. Born into an Armenian American family in Beverly Hills and marked early by proximity to tragedy and notoriety, Kim’s sense of ambition was evident from the start. She rose from Paris Hilton’s sidekick to tabloid fixation, reality-television star, and ultimately, the luminary of a new celebrity economy—an ascent that reveals how precisely she understood the culture she would come to create in her image.

Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews with Kim and dozens of her closest friends, family members, and associates, the book is a symphonic portrait of a woman who comes sharply into focus as the major cultural currents of the past four decades—fame, technology, beauty, capital, family—take shape around her. Cutting through years of self-narration and relentless scrutiny, Jonathan Van Meter reveals a fascinating figure who has repeatedly transformed pressure and trauma into momentum. Equal parts cultural history, high-fashion chronicle, and intimate family study, Citizen Kim is a dazzling, whip-smart exploration of one of the most influential—and misunderstood—celebrities of our time, and the world that made her superstardom possible.

2.5 ⭐️
As a longtime fan and viewer of the show, I wanted more from this book. I didn’t come away feeling I had learned much that was new or particularly revealing about Kim or her family. I was hoping the access afforded to the author would lead to a deeper exploration of the parts of her life that we don’t already see on television.

Her relationship with Kourtney is a good example. The book touches on their competitiveness, but anyone who has watched the show already knows that dynamic well. What I would have appreciated was a more thoughtful examination of what drives it: why their disagreements become so deeply personal, why they can be so verbally cruel to each other, and how their conflicts have sometimes escalated into physical altercations. Revisiting those tensions without meaningfully exploring them felt like a missed opportunity.

I also found the author overly sympathetic to his subject, consistently favouring a positive interpretation of Kim’s choices and actions. At times, the book felt like another carefully managed presentation of someone whose public image is already extensively curated. That said, I can see this being a worthwhile read for someone who has dismissed Kim without following her career. It makes a convincing case for her work ethic, business instincts and substantial role in building both her own success and the platform her siblings have benefited from.

Ultimately, my disappointment comes from being an interested reader who already takes her seriously. I didn’t need convincing that Kim deserves attention; I wanted the book to use that attention to tell me something deeper.

My biggest issue with Citizen Kim is that it felt more like an analysis of what we’ve already watched for almost 20 years than an exceptional biography. Kim gave him access and information, but I don’t think he did enough with it. I wanted depth, intimacy and the uncomfortable details we couldn’t have gotten from KUWTK. Like who is Kim Kardashian at her core

What was her actual day-to-day marriage to Kanye like? Did she feel the weight of adopting beefs from Kanye, did she have plastic surgery done or any treatments? The intricacies beyond his bipolar diagnosis? What was it actually like to be married to one of the greatest rappers of our generation. The evolution of Kim and Kourtney’s relationship? The root of Kourtney’s resentment towards Kris? Khloé’s rebellion after their dad died, how did Lamar’s relapse affect all of them, Kris’s ambition and the ways her pursuit of money affected her children? Even her relationship with Reggie Bush deserved more attention.

And I HATE how he seemed determined to make her dad a villain. We know how much the kardashians loved their father. You can acknowledge someone’s flaws without reducing their legacy to them I don’t think he was a bad person he just made poor judgements and mistakes . When someone has passed, I believe in honouring the good in their memory, not rewriting them into a villain.

There was so much potential here. Instead, we got random historical trivia, unnecessary details and a narrative that sometimes felt like a friend of Kim’s trying to make us understand her rather than a journalist critically examining

I don't feel this was a particularly deep insight to Kim Kardashian. If you've watched any of the Kardashian shows, or read Kardashian Konfidential then you won't learn anything new by reading this book.

Even the insights from Kim were surface level, where the author could have taken time to really dig deeper, but he seemed more preoccupied with kissing her ass.

Kim is extremely well media trained, and guarded, and therefore any of her thoughts about what people really wanted to know (Kanye, her relationships with her sisters etc) were tightly guarded.

The timeline also jumped and was all over the place. One second we're hearing about Kim's high school experience, the next it's about SKIMS.

2/5 🌟 - if only because I learned more about Kris and Robert Kardashian than I did about Kim

I really enjoyed this!! I grew up watching the Kardashians and have always loved Kim K. I just think she’s so iconic and loved getting to learn more about who she is this book makes you feel a surge of ambition. I also really related to how she talks about having a perfect childhood without getting too deep into everything and how she chooses to remember the good in people and experiences from her past rather than focusing on the bad. I feel like I do the exact same thing!

As someone who has read a lot about them and have followed her journey since kuwtk started.. this was nothing new or exciting. I hated the chopped up timelines and felt like it lacked so much factual events, dates and perspective from someone interviewing her and the close ones to her for so long!
Seems like a long magazine article only. Disappointed

Even if you’re not a Kardashian fan, but perhaps have a little bit of curiosity, and/or am a pop culture addict, please read this. It’s such a window onto several formative slices of life / celebrity lore / pop culture / Los Angeles, you have to read it.

I love Kim K but I also really love Jonathan Van Meter so this 🤝 really got me going. (and the fact that this book ends with a 30 page works cited…. it is JOURNALISM baby)
