Pornsak Pichetshote was a Thai-American rising star editor at DC’s Vertigo imprint where he worked on such comics perennials as The Sandman and Swamp Thing. His books have been nominated for dozens of Eisner awards—be it the award-winning Daytripper, the New York Times bestseller The Unwritten, or critical darlings like Sweet Tooth and Unknown Soldier. He left Vertigo to become an executive in DC Entertainment’s media team, where he started and oversaw DC TV’s department. Infidel marks his first major comics work as a writer.

Whoa!
Right out of the gate, this one just grabs hold of your throat.
You are not reading your average Green Arrow comic.

description

First things first, you should read Absolute Evil #1 before you read this, if you want to get the most out of everything. You don't strictly have to, but the premise of the whole comic is that someone is murdering billionaires using green arrows as a calling card in a revenge spree to avenge Oliver Queen's murder.
Why green arrows?
Well, that was the name of Queen's trading app that was supposed to level the playing field for investors and allow people from all walks of life the opportunity to grab the brass ring.

description

Dinah Lance is Oliver's ex-girlfriend, an MMA fighter who used to be a cop. The cost of her father's failing health has pushed her into the private sector, and she's now a personal bodyguard to the rich and famous. Unfortunately, her temper cost her her last job, which is how Merlin managed to get her to join Hector Hammond's team.
And now she's on the trail of a serial killer.

description

The horror is in your face with the chilling tone of the plot and the dark vibes the art gives off.
Fucking excellent start.
I can't wait to read the next one!
Highly Recommended.

The Absolute line just keeps delivering and this one is great. Pichetshote and Albuquerque take Green Arrow somewhere completely unexpected — a serial killer hunting corrupt billionaires, green arrows sticking out of corpses, and Dinah Lance right in the middle of it all trying to figure out who Oliver Queen really was. It’s a full-on horror murder mystery and it grips you from the first page and doesn’t let go. Albuquerque was born for this — his line work has always had a darkness to it and Maiolo’s colors push every scene into something genuinely unsettling. The social commentary is sharp without being heavy-handed and the mystery is layered enough that I’m already suspicious of everyone. Intense, beautiful and one of the best first issues I’ve read in a long time.

A hot-tempered former cop and MMA fighter named Dinah Lance is now a professional bodyguard struggling to help pay for her sick dad's meds. To get more money for the meds, She’s forced to protect some evil billionaire tech bros from a brutal, green arrow-using, masked serial killer who’s been hunting them all down.

In the past, Dinah used to date one of said billionaire tech bros way before he got rich, Oliver Queen. Unlike the others, Oliver was a good guy whose idea for a Trading app made him and his friends/colleagues very very rich. Until he was recently mysteriously killed after a falling out with Jubal Slade, one of said colleagues, over underaged sexual assault charges.

The tech bros are convinced Oliver was hiding something important to them in his personal doomsday bunker. So they take Dinah and a robust security detail to raid the place, and surprise surprise, the Green Arrow serial killer shows up, kills everyone except Dinah and one of the tech bros named Hammond. They then find the corpse of what looks like a kid with multiple eyes all over his body, hidden in the bunker.

Yep! They got me again guys. I can already tell this is going to be great: a well-written Horror detective mystery, and not to mention the top-notch, very “Something is killing the children”- like art that just matches the Horror setting perfectly. Don’t think I’ve read anything from these creators before but the chances of that changing have just skyrocketed.

Way back when, Marvel Comics used to pride itself on being the world outside your window, tackling real-world issues and socially relevant subjects. It feels safe to say that particular baton has been passed to DC Comics’ Absolute line-up. Damn near every month, openly political titles like Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman, and now six-issue limited series Absolute Green Arrow tackle the social rot and evils of capitalism plaguing American society, and the vigilante heroes fighting back against it all.

In it’s opening pages, readers are introduced to tech bro billionaire Jubal Slade, an antisocial incel who got rich off developing an app and has been credibly accused of raping and trafficking children for his fellow Richie Riches on his private island. Slade is slaughtered in short order, along with his large team of ex-military security. The murder is the mysterious entity known as the Green Arrow Killer, thanks to the colorful arrows left in the corpses of his victims.

What follows is straight-up comic book horror. Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque’s Absolute Green Arrow introduces a unique wrinkle to the Absolute line by making its titular character an honest to god horror movie slasher. Much of this seen through the eyes of ex-police officer and former MMA fighter turned private security agent, Dinah Lance, who is forced into working for mega-rich asshole Hector Hammond. This is less the mainline DC Comics’ Oliver Queen and more like Michael Myers with a bow and arrow. Heck, it might not even be Oliver Queen beneath the mask, given that he was brutally murdered himself in the Absolute Evil one-shot some months past. Then again, when has death stopped either a comic book hero or a slasher icon? Regardless of who’s under the mask, he moves with a supernatural swiftness and a single-minded pursuit toward killing the billionaires that have bankrupted society.

And let’s face it, there’s a hell of a lot worse ways to spend a New Comic Book Day morning witnessing artificial stand-ins for very real evil personalities getting exactly what they deserve and then some. Albuquerque deftly brings in a proper horror movie aesthetic, which isn’t surprising given his past work with Scott Snyder on American Vampire, and colorist Maiolo keeps it’s all dark, grimy, and gritty. Absolute Green Arrow distinguishes itself amongst the Absolute line with its very particular tone and appearance, while also being very much a part of that shared world. Throughout these panels, Pichetshote smartly details the evils at the heart of America’s elite with a script that screams “Ripped From The Headlines!” damn near every panel. I suspect some will accuse him of being too heavy-handed. I’d argue that given the state of this country today, previous fiction wasn’t heavy handed enough given how so many goddamned people missed the whole fucking point and practically tripped over themselves getting to the voting booths to help usher in all this awfulness.

This particular incarnation of Green Arrow may be a horror movie slasher, but that doesn’t make him a bad guy, does it?

I have been waiting for absolute green arrow since the series started. I could rattle on and on about how awesome green arrow is as a hero normally.

This follows Dinah Lance (not yet with Black Canary powers) as she tries to catch the green arrow killer who is avenging Oliver Queen’s death.

The panels are great, I am hooked. Going to wait for the multi-volumes to come out before I keep reading.

Also one of the murdered billionaires is basically Epstein which is fun to see him killed (not suicide).

Okay, Green Arrow had been a cheater too--what a guy! I'm done with most of these Absolute comics. They're just like sleazy soap operas now. I'll try more of the Wonder Woman ones, but that's it.

I was going to try the Absolute Flash series, but I'm not bothering anymore. He'll probably turn out to be a wife-bea-ting pe-dophile anyway.

A new Absolute title seems hard to pass up on and "Zombie Green Arrow" seems like an awful idea or just crazy enough to be the next Absolute hit. This issue suggests it's more on the "hit" side of the equation.

One grumble I have here is how Ollie's death occurred in another book which feels like a bad way to launch a book. I'd have liked a recap within #1 as it's a pretty vital aspect of the story. While it's hinted at in the dialogue I don't think it's good enough. That aside, the book is very accessible with a great introduction to Ollie as a do good entrepreneur, and to the "Green Arrow" that is out killing the rich and those who slighted Oliver Queen.
Are things as straightforward as the story appears? I sort of hope it isn't. In fact my crazy idea is that this is an Absolute mash-up of Green Arrow and Swamp thing and that the monster is part of the "green" and somehow mistakenly has acquired the body/memories of Oliver Queen. Absolute madness, I know but that's the kind of crazy twist I'm hoping for as the mystery is unravelled. I think there's a reason we're not really seeing Green Arrow clearly.

The art is great and there's a reason Albuquerque keeps drawing horror. This book in particular reminds me of a twisted hybrid of "tales from the crypt" Vs "Batman:TAS". The colouring also adds to the mood especially in the dark scenes with explosions or fire.

I probably will read the next issue as there's clearly something very weird going on regarding Oliver Queen. It's also curious how it's more a Dinah Lance book in terms of protagonist. Given how Oliver was initially killed I imagine the "Green Arrow" will soon attract the wrong attention turning this into something more than a murder mystery.

Definitely for fans of horror and revenge fantasy against the ultra rich bad boys.

Overall impression = 4/5
Writing = 4/5
Art = 4/5

Will I read the next issue? Probably

Wait for the trade collection? If this is a genuine mini series and not one that will be promoted to an ongoing, I'd say wait for the trade.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? Absolute Evil #1

Will I read previous issues I feel like I need to read Absolute evil #1 to know how he died.

Awesome first issue! I totally love the turn this book took after Ollie got killed off in the Absolute Evil one-shot, and the first issue fully delivers on that concept. This is a horror-tinged murder mystery that strikes the perfect balance in terms of how much info it gives and what mysteries still remain. Dinah Lance is such a good lead for this, too. Following on DWJ’s Absolute Batman annual story, Pichetshote really brings in some biting social commentary. This book goes pretty hard, and I’m glad DC is letting the creative team run.

What a great start! It does such a good job of setting a basis for the world and characters we will be following and the central mystery at the center: who is the green arrow? But I love the real world political feel this book brings in with it, especially with the use of social media to comment on the death of the ex-co-ceo of GreenArrows trading (alongside Ollie before his death) and exposed rapist Jubal Slade at the start of this book and the very real world comparisons that can be made there. The book doesn’t hold back in establishing that billionaires are monsters, but questions the reader and the public at large on how far we should go because of that. Also right out the gate, I love the morbid use of trick arrows to contain poison elements, or even a grenade later on, and when it comes to initial predictions I hope this GA is still a version of Ollie but one in desperate need of redemption as it seems like, as always, he is just trying to do the right thing. But even with the longbow killer looming overhead and sending the billionaires scurrying, our central focus is through the eyes of Dinah “Black Canary” Lance. Black Canary is her MMA name, but that doesn’t pay the bills in this economy. She started out as a cop, then MMA, and now private security as she has moved back into her dad’s place to save on money while taking care of his heath issues. Although Dinah has an utter disdain for the rich, she is forced to spend most of her time looking over their shoulders as she continually sees firsthand the effect money as power has on people. There is also continual and mysterious references to Dinah’s mom and something she did.

Dinah ended up suspended from her pop star protection gig, only to have another firm immediately pull her in for a special assignment with her manager being none other than Malcolm Merlyn. Getting the archer train started right here, lol, except it turns out he works for Hammond, the guy who had Ollie killed by Hawkman in the absolute evil special, and because of Dinah’s close proximity to some of the people who have already died she is the perfect person to head up the protection for Hammond and CEO Reese Tyler, a billionaire who filed bankruptcy after being exposed for covering up the highly addictive nature of his pharmaceutical company only to be bought out by Hammond and placed as the new head of Hammond Pharmaceuticals…just the absolutely best people imaginable, heh. But speaking back to Dinah’s connection to the deceased, it turns out 8 years ago she was neighbors with Jubal Slade and Oliver Queen when they were setting up their GreenArrows stock trading app and she was in a close personal relationship with Ollie. Queen’s discussions with Dinah during this time perfectly leave no room for misinterpretation as he talks about building the affordable stock trading app in an effort to redistribute the wealth and in effect the power. Ollie’s comments on corporate lobbying to influence elections especially hits close to home today. Ollie was the face man who secured the funding as Jubal programmed. There is a line here which also completely caught me off guard as Dinah mentions breaking it off with Ollie after catching him cheating. I’m not going to deny that happened, but I wonder if this is included, besides giving a reason the two are apart, to show Ollie’s rise and acceptance into the billionaire class of this world…in returns embracing it himself and all of the immoral portions of it before realizing his mistake way too late and being killed because of it as at the end of the day, as Dinah knows, Oliver was always focused on trying to do the right thing.

As Dinah is informed on more aspects of the case, she is shown images of Jubal’s death…including the green arrows stabbed into his eyes and the severed body parts he “allegedly” used to rape underage women with. The files also contain other suspects who could be taking up the killer’s identity, including our favorite red head Roy Harper, Mia Dearden, and one archer I had to look up named Tom Hallaway aka the spider. But as Dinah looks over all of this and the monsters she would be assigned to protect she can’t bring herself to do it…until Hammond and Tyler walk in to see how their protection detail is doing. Tyler is especially excited about Dinah’s help as he found her files and connection to Queen himself. But as Dinah informs them that she cannot take the job and she has to attend to her sick father, Hammond is enraged. He grabs Malcom’s tablet and looks over her file, containing way too much info he should have, as he promises if she works for them her father will never have to worry about health insurance again…but as a show of force he proceeds to cancel her father’s health insurance anyway to send her home to wallow in the pain before coming to work on Monday so everything will be better again in her small little life as to these billionaires everyone else is nothing but children ready and waiting for their candy to be stolen.

Dinah is now stuck in a situation where she has to work for these insane billionaires to take care of her own father. As it happens, they have been trying to crack the security on Ollie’s doomsday bunker known as the “arrow cave” for months and on her first day they finally get in. Of course they find the usual stuff like the arrow car and all the archery stuff alongside it, but it seems Hammond and Tyler are looking for something very specific and important. But as Dinah moves with the rest of the guards, she quickly senses the volley of green arrows coming for them! She calls for everyone to move as she grabs and snaps an arrow right as it scratches Tyler…but a scratch was all it needed to send the poison into his system. The grenade arrow comes next to take out the car as in the midst of the first the demon faced green arrow killer finally shows himself. He activates a dope as special mechanism in his now to turn it into two blades connected by the bow string which he immediately uses to start lobbing heads off as he makes his way to the guards and right to Hammond. As he grabs Hammond he yells about what he did to Oliver Queen, and as Hammond starts to make excuses the killer makes it known that it’s time his like finally faced consequences…starting with Hammond’s hand being sliced off! The killer runs off into the smoke, promising Hammond that he will slice off more next time. Dinah witnessed and hears all of this, Hammond knows who killed Ollie, and now she is forced to help stop the bleeding…but that doesn’t mean she can’t smile while seeing him suffer in pain. Later, Dinah and Malcolm returned to scour what’s left of the arrow cave for clues…only to find a fake wall the explosion jarred loose. It hasn’t been opened on months and must contain what Hammond and Tyler were looking for, but as the pair get inside what they find is a young boy’s dead body. It’s oddly not decomposed, but that’s not even the strangest part as the boy’s body is covered in eyeballs! Is this the absolute ten eyed man? Or in this case…the 21 eyed boy?! Once again, what a strange and hitting close to home depressing start…I can’t wait for more.

I thought the beginning was pretty solid, but I honestly don’t fully understand why so many people rated the first issue so highly. It mostly feels like setup. The main purpose is to build the mystery around Oliver Queen’s murder, introduce the characters and establish the Longbow Killer.
My biggest disappointment was probably the art. It’s not bad at all, but I expected something darker and harsher. Even the colors sometimes feel a little flat and not quite as alive as I hoped. Looking at some of the covers, I expected a story that would feel much more like someone operating from the shadows.

I also wish the Longbow Killer had been introduced in a more horror-like way. His first reveal was cool, and I really like that the series is more brutal and violent than I expected, but I wanted that darker atmosphere to be pushed even further.

Another thing I would have preferred is a more street-level beginning. Instead, we immediately get involved with extremely wealthy and powerful people. I think starting smaller and slowly building toward that world would have made the Longbow Killer feel even more mysterious.

What I do really like is the social commentary. It fits Green Arrow extremely well and also works naturally with the main plot. I haven’t read much Green Arrow before this, but I watched the TV show, and the earlier seasons had some of that social and political commentary too. So I’m glad the comic is leaning into that side of the character.

Overall, a decent start with an interesting premise, but I expected a little more considering how much praise the first issue received.

This could possibly be one of my new favorite ‘Absolute’ characters. Strong start to this series so far.

Oliver Queen is dead. Body found washed up on a beach with horrific head trauma. The man Dinah Lance used to love now dead, spends her days as a bodyguard for pop stars and millionaires she cannot stand. Dinah gets a job from Malcolm Merlyn to begin looking for the allusive psychotic killer Green Arrow. When she denies, Merlyn demonstrates that she has no other choice, or her father will get the worst of it.

I like the way this issue is structured. A brief origin of Oliver from Dinah’s perspective of how he started a stock trading app that gives more access to the people. ‘Redistributing the power,’ they said. Of course she saw very little of this companies rise to fame as she left Oliver a month in after finding out he cheated. We most likely won’t hear much more about this company, but to hear anything at all is refreshing. Hearing Queen Enterprises all the time with no real meaning was starting to become sickening in comic media.

Green Arrow becoming this monstrous killer I would say has me interested, but he’s always been this way at the start of his career. The end of the issue and the art of his face seem to show the different from this Oliver to the one we know and love so I can’t wait to find out what it is.

This was a lot of fun. There were definitely some aspects I felt could have been handled better than others, but overall it was still an enjoyable ride. I have only kept up with a handful of the Absolute titles, and this was one of the first I jumped into. It does make me wonder if reading Absolute Superman or Green Lantern beforehand would make this issue or series hit a little differently. I'm aware of the Oliver Queen connection through Absolute Evil, even though I haven't read it myself yet.
I really enjoyed seeing Green Arrow in action and definitely want more of the character. As for Dinah Lance, I'm still on the fence. I really like her as a character in the mainline universe and understand why she's being chosen as our protagonist, but I am not sold on her design yet. More importantly, I need to see more of who she actually is as a character. Right now, the book feels very focused on telling rather than showing, so I need more time with her before I fully buy in.
Overall, I do recommend this issue. It was a fun read and left me interested enough to see where things go next.

Absolute Green Arrow 1 is a DC Comics issue written by Pornsak Pichetshote, art by Rafael Albuquerque, and colors by Marcelo Maiolo. It is cover dated July 2026.

Former MMA and police officer turned private bodyguard Dinah Lance has a new client, billionaire pharmaceutical CEO Reese Tyler who is the target of the Green Arrow Killer, an assassin targeting the scummiest and most despicable business titans

This first issue does a great job of making you think know what’s going on in the first couple pages to make you question everything you know about Green Arrow’s lore by the final panel. I was a bit confused about the timeline of events but that may be on purpose so that you aren’t quite sure who these characters truly are. I like the book is set in the very current familiar real-world sentiment of the average American’s opinion of tech conglomerates leaders. Albuquerque’s art is fantastic capturing the brutal and dark nature of the book and the story writing, visual style, and overall tone gives me a very David Fincher feel.

I was promised a superhero slasher story and I certainly got it. A very promising start with an intriguing twist at the end.

The one drawback, and I almost held back another star for this, is that it handles its theme of rich people being assholes with all the grace and subtlety of a bull handling the task of navigating through a China shop. I know that's par for the course with a Green Arrow story, but if you're hoping for a nuanced approach to discussing the evils of wealth and privilege, you might want to keep looking. Every rich character (except for a dead Oliver Queen) are depicted as irredeemably awful with no room for nuance.

But if you, like me, are looking for a slasher horror comic where a guy in a scary mask kills irredeemably awful people with a bow and arrow, you're in the right place.

Pornsak Pichetshote tackles the most relatable enemies of modern-day readers: insurance denials, tech CEOs, and predatory billionaires, as well as the difficulty of making a living without sacrificing your morals, all in a big first issue.

You are immediately thrown into a world that feels just a little too realistic, along with a protagonist who might just be a little too relatable, except for the fact that she’s an excellent fighter. Otherwise, completely relatable lol. And if this feels to left-wing for you, don't worry. There's a dash of copaganda too.

Definitely do yourself a favor if you’re wanting a realistic, action-packed story with relatable real-world themes. Just take note: this is probably not for the youngest readers.

Okay Oliver!

This was a great start for this Absolute Green Arrow run. I am certainly being subjective here because I'm a huge Green Arrow CW series fan. There's an Wade here to this arc because it's dark and filled with lots of mystery. All the two percenters gotta go! There's definitely going to be some political daggers thrown here. The writing and artwork both are top-tier.

I actually enjoy the emphasis on Dinah especially since it took a long time for her character to grow on me, in the past. I'm feeling an intro to Absolute Black Canary brewing.Looking forward to the next issue! Who's up next?!
