Have you ever read a book and when you finish it you just sit there thinking "what did I just read?" Trust me, not in a bad way! This book will have you going on a ride that you do not want to miss. You will experience so many emotions and will not want to put it down. This book is so much more than just a fantasy and abduction. Summer's writing will pull you in and take you on a journey then leave you asking for more. It has been awhile since I have read a dark romance that will stay with me and this one definitely fits that definition. Do not miss out on this book!

ARC Review - 🖤A Dark Novella Adventure 🖤

I had no idea what to expect and from the moment this story started I was captivated. It started with our FMC booking a luxury holiday adventure and then next minute she is dr*gged, k1dnapped and woke up in a house in the woods. She asked “why is this happening?” and I was asking the same dam question. WTF just happened!!! Adam the MMC is unhinged and soooo morally grey and Mia is sassy and has this deep fire inside of her and possibly a little unhinged herself deep down. Their chemistry was undeniable and I loved seeing them fight over control.

We then get to the bathroom scene and I was on the edge of my seat thinking OMG is this not a HEA and then BAM 💥 everything about the entire book made sense and I had no freaking idea. Some holiday adventure I say.

I have never read a book like this and WOW well done Summer Riley.

This is a standalone novella and if you love an unhinged, morally grey MMC and dark themes then I suggest you give this a read.

One of my favorite things about dark romance books is the ability to be pulled in and giddy while also sayin “dear God please never attract this kind of crazy into my life”. Adam and Mia do exactly that for me. The whole book had me at the edge of my seat and holding on for quite literally my life. Mia is a fiery fierce take no prisoners kind of woman, and Adam is a take no shit, never back down, I take what I want kind of man. Throw them together and it’s like the Fourth of July smoke from the fireworks. Also the visual representation I created in my mind by Adam’s “ modifications” is really quite fun, but also my brain can be a wild place to be. Also cue a single sentence to one of her other series “the Douglas brothers” which was a fun little treat for me as I’ve had the chance to read the first one of those.

Anyway, The plot twist was hot, the ending was hot, the beginning and middle….you guessed it. H-O-T.
The book has enough plot to keep you interested and enough smut to make you drool. 🤤

This is only my 2nd read from this author and I’m definitely a big fan. They’re easy quick paced books. This is the kind of energy I crave ONLY in my books! lol

Phew! This was a spicy and wild one! 🔥
It has Scottish accent and it’s kinda hot 🫠 - but I needed a little time to adjust to (maybe bc I’m no native speaker) but you quickly get the hang of it!

Mia spent an absurd amount of money on a, what seems like a luxurious holiday, experience. I knew there was something going on - spending THAT much money.. giiiirl 👀 But on the way to the airport she got kidnapped and has no remembering how she ended up in that house.
What then begins is a game of power and survival with her handsome captor. While Mia tries everything to escape - you’re constantly wondering who’s actually in control. And Adam’s bat shit crazy but Mia is a feisty FMC who stands up to him and is willing to fight for her freedom.

Slowly Mia is slowly torn between her feelings for her kidnapper (desperately wanting him yet wanting to get away) and it gets really hot there in the mountains - let me tell you! Adam also has some modification made to you know what (🍆 iykyk 👀)

And the plot twist left my jaw on the floor!

This was an intense and spicy read, you think you know whats happening, but then the script is flipped and you’re left wondering what the heck is going on. Mia has paid an obscene amount of money for a luxury vacation to fulfill her darkest fantasies. She wakes handcuffed in an unfamiliar room and then Adam enters, from there it quickly spirals into a dark and twisted game of cat and mouse. You’re left feeling like that this has to be related to her vacation but then Adam will say something that has you second guessing yourself. Mia is a fighter and looks for any way to escape and/or unalive Adam. You can feel her fear and rage jumping off the page. But this only makes Adam want to keep her more. He’s intriguing, terrifying, and feral level obsessed for Mia. He can’t keep his hands off of her, leading to some epic spice. Mia is fiesty and isn’t afraid of standing up to him to gain her freedom. That twist? Unexpected, shocking, and perfectly revealed. This is a short, fast paced, edge of your seat chaotic rollercoaster perfect for readers who aren’t afraid to get a little dirty.

Honestly, I've never done a pre book review before so this is my first I loved it.

Summer is back at it again, striking us all down with another dark romance-captor/captive. She's had me around her finger since "Mine"

And this felt like that. It felt like Summer Riley.

10/10 would recommend.

It's a fresh take on, careful what you wish for. Adam is truly nutty for sure, the accent made me giggle for the first few chapters, but the deeper into madness we sunk the more I warmed to it. Who knew the Scottish accent worked like that...

Our little Hellcat, she's something special, she's a real firecracker. I love the constant divide in her.

Such a valid statement because I finished it literally five minutes ago and I already want more Adam. I also want to know more about his life tbh, it sounded like he's got some stories.

There were moments where I just kept telling her to stop, stop and enjoy the rollercoaster girl cause...ooff. His modification...goddamn she's a lucky gal but I bet that hurt, even if he says otherwise.

I loved the subtle nod to another book. But I'm a sucker for a good little easter egg or reference with writers and other books.


10/10 again, will 100% read again.

This is completely bingable and at no point did I want to put this down. In fact, I want more! I need more! Adam and Mia had chemistry, tension and passion that is off the charts hot.

THEN Summer has the audacity to turn this masterpiece into an AUDIOBOOK! And not just any audiobook.. She just HAD to read in my favorite accent ever! I think @summerrileyauthor and @chase.laroit.narrator are trying to send me to an early grave.

@chase.laroit.narrator has been one of my favorite narrators for quite some time. Listen, if this man narrates it you need to listen to it. Plain and simple. I do not care what it is. He can craft his voice perfectly into any character and completely transform a story.

Now, we have Summer coming in hot (and I mean HOT) narrating her own book, and now I need this woman to read me her grocery list and her taxes. She reads this with such passionate and conviction that I was so invested in this character. I was rooting for Mia. Mia needed to win everything.

Like seriously though, that was such a wild ride! Plaything by Summer Riley was so freaking delicious, I ate it for all my meals. I am SO glad that I got this in audio because the duet between Chase & Summer was mind-bending good! The scenes? Holy hot! And in the woooooods?! My favorite microtrope was so well done, such a sensation, and it really helps a few communities feel seen ;)

Our girl Mia, first of all, was totally gypped financially BUUUT I think that it really all worked out in the end. I love how quick this book got down to business! We got a perfect amount of story before Mia really became Adam's plaything and between all of the chaos these two get into during their time together, a perfect amount of info drops for it all to come full circle. Was this book pure smut? No, but it was reallllllly hitting that fine line (in the best way!!!)

Plus, the audio narration between Chase and Summer was SO freaking good. The accents were done very well. Their lines were perfection, and they made it so easy to immerse myself into their story. The literal only change that I would make would be that it would be done where the MMC/FMC speak their lines through the book and not by chapter, but that isn't something that bothers me either way.

I had no idea what to except with this besides it being a dark romance and let me tell you this was fan freaking tastic! It takes a special author to write a novella and make it seem like its not rushed in any way. This was not rushed at all.

This quite literally has it all! Tall, dark, and morally grey with a SCOTTISH accent. Yes you read that right SCOTTISH accent. Mia, our FMC, starts but planning her dream vacation and next thing she knows she wants up handcuffed on a bed with no clue how she got there. Adam, our MMC, is literally perfect. I don't want to give anything away but just wait until the first spicy scene. Then we can talk lol ;) Mia tries her hardest to escape but Adam refuses to let that happen! And that forest scene... spicy spicy spicy.

I mean this book is less than 200 pages but it hits just like a 400 page book would! Highly recommended for all my dark romance babes. Captor/captive romance, Scottish accent, and someone who literally knows everything about you! Adam is just amazing. So if you're looking for a quick read that packs a serious punch then this is for you! You can thank me later! <3

This novella leans heavily into the spice, and it delivers exactly what it promises. The chemistry between the FMC and MMC is undeniable, and the tension is fun. Even with the shorter length, the characters are surprisingly likable, and their dynamic kept me engaged from start to finish.

The banter between the FMC and MMC was one of my favorite parts; its playful, sharp, and perfectly balanced with the heat. I definitely found myself wanting more of the MMC; he has absolutely earned a spot on the dark romance book‑boyfriend list.

Overall:
A quick, spicy, and satisfying read that hits its mark and leaves you wanting more of these characters.

What did I read? Wow I went into this blind but what a ride. I enjoyed this so much I am actually sad it’s over but I did not expect that ending in the sense that i didn’t see this coming but it is welcome. I wondered how this would play out but I love how unhinged both the FMC and MMC are that it just works. Definitely worth the read.

Pros in my opinion:
I love that we do not have a virgin FMC and that she is actually a horrible person so I didn’t bother feeling sorry for her but it also worked for the story so I found it refreshing. The MC’s Mia and Adam’s relationship in the book is so messed up that you wonder how they could work but I found they’re so unhinged that it felt intense but right for them. I did not want their time to end.

Cons in my opinion:
It was too short and I wanted more because I liked the MCs. My only issue was that the mounties were confusing and without giving spoilers away, were they meant to be there or was it part of the experience?

"Plaything" is a standalone short novella that offers a quick, nonstop, hard-and-fast read about Adam and Mia's dark romance. Mia truly embodies pure boss-woman energy both in and out of the boardroom. After signing and finalizing paperwork for a much-needed vacation, things take an unexpected turn as she heads to the airport.

Mia finds herself abducted by a hot, sexy Scotsman named Adam. Tied to a bed, she is left wondering about her whereabouts and unable to remember what led to her capture. The tension and intense chemistry between Mia and Adam are completely insane and absolutely scorching, even though she knows she shouldn’t feel any attraction to her kidnapper. It quickly becomes a cat-and-mouse game, as Mia is determined to escape from Adam before time runs out.

Summer truly outdid herself with this dark romance novella, combining heart-racing suspense with twists and turns that left my jaw dropped and me craving so much more. You definitely must read it!

I received an ARC of this book. To start, I am an inexperienced romance and dark romance reader. This is maybe the 3rd dark romance I've read.

I had an absolute blast with this book. I read it all in one sitting, and I thought it was very well paced. Even though I thought I knew why Mia was in this situation, there were some things that happened midway through that had me questioning.

I loved Mia as an FMC. The author did a great job balancing her attraction to this ribbed psycho with constant instincts for self preservation. Right up until the very end, she was willing to do what it takes to get out of this dangerous situation. She definitely earned the nickname Hellcat.

Adam was great too. I was worried I might be distracted by the Scottish dialect being written out, but it quickly became more natural to read and hear in my head, and I think it was a good choice by the author.

The spice was spicing nicely as well. Overall great story with good chemistry and some nice action and spice throughout.

Before you get into it, know it stops at 190 pages 😅 I mean, I knew it, the description says novella, I'm just greedy and wanted more.😅

Mia signs up for an exclusive experience to live out her fantasies. Adam is a tattooed Scotsman who abducts her, holds her captive and does deliciously dirty things to Mia. But Mia is fighting for her life and the resulting story gets intense as she tries to escape/survive her captor.

The part with the Mounties had my heart beating so wild, the story officially dragged me in and refused to let me go here on out.
The writing had me holding my breath because of the suspense, and my cheeks aflame because Mia and Adam had such amazing sexual chemistry; I was heated 😮‍💨🫠.

Adam is terrifying and intriguing all at once. The way the dynamic shifts kept me guessing switching from survival to Stockholm to something real. He is most assuredly obssessed with Mia and I truly love to see it 😮‍💨

This book was such a good time! Fast, dark, suspenseful, and surprisingly addictive.

Plaything is a quick, spicy, cat and mouse story that will having you guessing what is actually happening.
Mia is heading on vacation when she is abducted and wakes up with no memory of how she got where she is. A man named Adam is there though, and tells her that he is going to have the best time with her for the next 30 hours. Mia has no idea what is going to happen after the 30 hours though and is scared for her life. Problem is, she feels an attraction to Adam when she knows she shouldn't. She does make several attempts to escape, which lead her to getting punished, but, punishment, as it turns out, isn't as bad as she thought it would be.
I did sort of guess where this story was headed. Adam seemed a little intimidating to me. The fact the he handled pain so well, scared me a little. But he also genuinely seemed so sweet and caring.
If you're in the mood for a quick, engaging story filled with spice, I recommend giving this a go.

Mia and Adam’s story is so fun! Who wouldn’t want to be in a captor/captive situation with a “morally grey” man with a Scottish accent? Mia thinks she’s planning and going on her dream vacation, until she is taken by Adam, who has other plans for her. He pushes her to her limits and her being the “Hellcat” that she is, she pushes him as well.
Honestly didn’t know what to expect going into this and it surprised me with how much fun it was. Such a quick read too!

The cover got my attention straight away and after that i pretty much went in blind.

The story started a little wobbly for me, my attention dwindling until just past 50% of the book then it ramped up a bit more which kept me engaged until the end.

The twist was not what i expected at all and was an addition that definitely elevated the story.

Mia's and Adam's dynamic was 🔥. Even through the uncertainty and fear they had a very strong pull towards one another. The accent was obviously what we all needed along with Mia.

Overall a solid read and for my spice loving baddies there is some excellent scenes in here.

​Mia is an incredible lead; her strength and confidence are everything. And Adam? Let’s just say he’s giving her exactly what she wants, even if she doesn’t realize it yet (IYKYK).
​I really want to give this 5 stars, but the ending felt a little rushed for me. I was so invested that I desperately wanted more closure on the characters and the plot—especially regarding the "game." Still, a fantastic read that I definitely recommend!

This novella was filled with everything you could want in a dark romance. All of these tropes were new to me, and while I am definitely learning the ropes of the dark romance world, I am here to say I was loving all of them! I especially loved her writing style, she immediately put me in the shoes of Mia and had me scrambling to figure out why Mia was being held captive and how she was going to get out of there alive. The pacing was smooth and consistent and made this novella fly by. And the spice level? Off the charts 🌶️ 🥵! This one had me truly stumped as I absolutely did not guess the ending, an ending which had me literally saying “oh sh*t!” out loud, to myself, alone, in my living room!

Plaything was a fun, quirky, high spice novella. A solid 4.5 stars. I love the concept, well off Mia pays for a fantasy "vacation" where she gets to live out some of her darkest desires. We should all be so lucky. I loved the chemistry between her and Adam, they were sizzling hot. I could hear that accent when I was reading.

I throughly enjoyed Mia's internal dialog as she fought her feelings towards Adam based on the situation at hand. The banter was great and overall this is a fun, very enjoyable read with an amazing primal play scene that left me hot and bothered. Just read this. You won't be disappointed.

Loved this fast-read novela in the same universe as The Douglas Brothers. Has interesting tropes (most would consider triggering), intense characters, banter, spice and HEA. This psychological thriller could easily be made into a movie. Mia is a high-profile executive in the lookout of having a well deserve tailored vacation that suits all her needs. But things for Miar are about to take a turn when she is not careful of what she wished for. Furthermore, you wouldn't want to mess with Miar in her survival mode, something Adam, an ex-military, will learn at a high price. They will take to extreme measures to gain the upper hand in a sexy trap of a cat and mouse role playing game.

Summer writes darker, spicy like no one else. This book delivered.

I think writing accents can be tricky, but the way she did it, I could literally hear the MMC talking in my head, and I was blushing.

In short, Mia is taken after she signs up to go on a vacation of sorts. She wakes up trapped with the MMC, and that’s where the spice begins; it’s insta-love/hate/attraction, no messing around, and let’s admit it, sometimes we need insta-attract books. I want it right, not fifty chapters later.

I love that the FMC has a sharp spine and gave it right back (literally his poor hand, read it and find out).
As the plot deepens, things start to unfold, and I loved the twist at the end.

I have no words except read it! It checks all the boxes... morally dark gray man, twists and turns, kidnapping, spice... Adam is schmex on a stick. Mia is a total bada** in the boardroom and life in general. Like so many of women, she does it all.. literally. Which is why she decides to plan a vacation but things never go to plan... especially when you wake up in a place you don't know, don't remember how you got there or who the tall, dark man with the Scottish accent it.
