I received an advanced copy of this book. This was well researched and laid out in an easy to understand way. There were practical tips and recipes to enjoy!
We live in a world where everyone’s cortisol seems to be running high. As a menopausal woman, and someone who has had autoimmune conditions most of my life, I’ve learnt first hand how bad cortisol is for my health and quality of life.
This is the third book that I’ve read by the author Heidi Moretti. Again it’s a quick and easy read. It's packed with both accessible and natural solutions to reduce cortisol levels, that anyone can try. Some of the stuff I already know. However, lots of it I didn’t. Now, I have a list of things that I can try, to reduce my cortisol levels and improve my health.
What this book is: a basic introduction for patients/consumers who want to learn how nutrition affects cortisol and how cortisol affects our nutrition. It provides basic information, like why fat is important in our diets, while encouraging readers to consult a healthcare professional for their individualized nutrition needs.
What this book is not: a desk reference for healthcare practitioners looking for in-depth info on lab analysis, titrating supplement doses, calculating individualized nutrient needs, etc.
Positives: - The author acknowledges that cortisol management is more than just nutrition. She doesn't provide false promises that a supplement is the magic pill. - The author tries to make healthcare topics understandable to readers without a medical background. - There's an entire chapter on recipes. More than that, the author explains why the ingredients in them are healthy! -It's written by a credentialed healthcare professional. (I have read other books on health & nutrition written by people without any credentials in healthcare nor any educational background in health or nutrition. Those books are probably less reliable.)
Negatives: -The references seem sloppy. I understand that URLs change. This went beyond that. I spent hours trying find 36 references (3 chapters worth). I even searched multiple databases, in case articles had been removed from PubMed. I think I found 16. I say "think" because 13 of the 16 didn't completely match the references in the book. Sometimes the study's publication date/year was different. Sometimes, the journal name was different. Sometimes I found a study by the authors published that year in that journal but the article name was different.
As a fellow nutrition professional, I read many research articles and books on nutrition, stress, hormones, and wellness—and I recommend Cortisol Fix.
Heidi moretti has a gift for making complex topics understandable, fun and interesting without oversimplifying them.
Throughout the book I found myself thinking, "Yes! I recommend many of these same foundational lifestyle and nutrition strategies to clients." But Heidi also expanded beyond the basics, providing thoughtful guidance on herbs, foods, and nutrients that may help support stress response and anxiety, along with the science, rationale and scientific references behind their use.
I especially appreciated that she didn't simply tell readers what to do or take. She explains why certain options may help and also includes important cautions about when something may not be appropriate. The charts, recipes and practical recommendations make the information easy to use in real life.
This is not a fad or "magic fix" book. It's an intelligent, practical, compassionate guide and I think you’ll return to multiple times and the recipes look amazing!
Whether you're someone struggling with stress and anxiety, or a health professional looking for a well-written, patient-friendly resource to recommend, this is a valuable addition to your library.
The Cortisol Fix is an eye opening account of the importance of cortisol resistance and how to practically manage it.
I learned a great deal about the importance of this vital stress hormone and actionable ways of balancing it - too much or too little is a problem, much like insulin.
The great thing about this book is that it provides information that is steeped in solid science while at the same time explaining it in common language.
While reading it, I felt confident that I could indeed understand the principles and how to apply them to my daily life. Ultimately, that’s what counts the most, IMO.
I highly recommend The Cortisol Fix to anyone who is interested in better regulating their stress response and the many mind-body implications that are connected to it.
