About the author

was an Indian writer, of Bengali origin, who wrote social-realist fiction. He was born in Bhagalpur, part of the Bengal Presidency in British India. Bhattacharya gained a bachelor's degree from Patna University and a doctorate from the University of London. He returned to India and joined the diplomatic service. Bhattacharya served in the United States, to which country he returned as a teacher of literary studies once he had left the service. He taught in Hawaii, and later in Seattle. In his mid-thirties Bhattacharya began writing fiction set in historically and socially realistic contexts. He wrote in English, his chosen medium following the advice of two prominent literary figures.
Bhattacharya is described as belonging to the social realism school of Indo-Anglian literature. His writings exhibit the influence of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. Unlike other social realists like Premchand, Bhattacharya adopted a pedagogical approach to making novels out of ideas, utilizing satire and making his ideas more tangible through situational examples.

The main characters Satyajit and Suruchi are hard nuts to crack. Their daughter is no less unshakable. They are hell-bent on setting up a community on Gandhian principles of self-sufficiency, righteousness and cooperation. But modern India's aspirations to grow fast come as a challenge to these simplistic values. The designs of a technology driven modern nation is drawn by a young foreign educated engineer who is determined to uproot the Gandhian village and set up the steel mill to supply raw material for India's weapons factories. They come face to face and the result is more rigidity in their stands. The problem is all of them are first-grade bores in the context of a fiction. The engineer is not able to get over his fixated persona to appear romantic in the company of the amiable daughter of Satyajit.

While all these take place in the quaint corner of India, Chinese aggression looms large over India's northern borders. Satyajit wants to melt the Chinese aggressor's heart with, what else, Gandhian principles. The result is a highly contrived and many layered narrative.

1962ல் நடைபெற்ற சீனா - இந்தியா போரினை மையமாக கொண்டு எழுதப்பட்டுள்ள நாவல். போர் தளவாடங்களை உற்பத்தி செய்யும் எக்கு தொழிற்சாலையை அமைப்பதற்காக, அருகிலுள்ள காந்தி கிராமத்தை அழிக்க முயல்கிறது அரசு. சத்யஜித் தலைமையிலான காந்தி கிராமம் மக்கள், எவ்வாறு அகிம்சை வழியில் அதனை எதிர்கொள்கிறார்கள் என்பதே கதை. காந்திய சமுக அறங்களுக்கும், அறிவியல் - தொழில் நுட்பத்திற்குமான கருத்துரீதியான மோதல், காதல், மனிதநேயம், உறவுகள், இராணுவம், போர் என பலவற்றின் கலவை இந்நாவல். மெதுவாக நகரும் இக்கதையில் பல வலுவான கருத்துக்கள் நிறைந்துள்ளன.

எதிரியின் துயரில் துளியளவு சாதகமாக எடுத்துக் கொள்வது அஹிம்சைக்கு மாறானதாகும்.

எதிரி வெல்வதற்கு, சாத்தியமாகும் ஒவ்வொரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தையும் காந்தி எப்போதும் வழங்கினார்.

வெறுமையான வெற்றி தோல்வியை விட மோசமானது. நம் உயிர்ப்பை வலுப்படுத்துவது மோதல்தான்.

காந்தி கிராமத்தின் மீது தொடுக்க பட்ட வளர்ச்சிக்கான போரில், பாஸ்கரின் எக்கு நகரம் வெல்கிறதா அல்லது சத்யஜித்தின் காந்திகிராமம் வெல்கிறதா என்பது கதை. இந்திய சீன போரில் ஊறி செல்கிறது கதை. காந்தியின் நகலாக வாழும் சத்யஜித், அவர் மனைவி சுருச்சி, மகள் சுமிதா, ரூபா, பிரேஸ்வர், திருமதி மெஹ்ரா என்று உயிரோட்டம் உள்ள பாத்திரங்கள் கதையை வழி நடத்தி செல்கிறார்கள். மிகவும் சுறுசுறுப்பான போக்கு. உண்மையில் சிறிது நேரம் எடுத்து படித்து முடித்த புத்தகம். Its a nice read given the fact that our journey goes into the yesteryear and thoughts of the sociology and reality then.

Dealing with variant forces in Indian life in the 1950-60's. From setting up a factory in a town dedicated to handicrafts to spiritually to the Chinese invasion of Ladakh to saving the town to women's roles. I found the writing style slow-going like wading through knee high mud.
