Jane Smiley, John Irving, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Gail Godwin, and nine other prominent masters of the craft share their thoughts about creative writing, reflect on their own experiences, discuss specific teaching methods, and offer advice for other students and teachers.
I started reading this to find tips and encouragement from fiction writers to share with my composition students, but instead it turned out to be more beneficial for me! I like hearing what writers have to say about writing, so this was a fun read.
I am a new writer. I found this very helpful to get to hear about the lives of writers, but especially about creative writing workshops and MFA programs. Although dated, a most read if you are looking at taking classes. Gives good tips about how to choose a program and teacher.
As an English instructor, I enjoyed the read, though I found some writing instructors more helpful than others. The best advice and insight came from RHW Dillard, Stanley Elkin, Gordon Lish, Clarence Major, and Jane Smiley. I will incorporate some of what I gained into my own teaching, especially when it comes to providing feedback to students.
Interviews with accomplished writers - including John Irving & Jane Smiley - with a focus on MFA programs and writer's workshops. Interesting, but comes with an agenda.
