Five-Star-Chef Zoe Griffin walked away from her dream job. Did she make a mistake?

Her engagement off, Zoe Griffin retreats to tiny Wildflower Island in the Puget Sound. Hiding out as a cook and maid at a shabby bed-and-breakfast seems crazy for a chef who’s used to running her own five-star kitchen. And just as she starts to feel at home, her klutzy mishaps make Zoe fear her handsome new boss will fire her.

Dr. Nick Jackson is done with medicine, and owning a B&B is as far from doctoring as he can get. He needs help, but his only employee’s mistakes give him doubts. As Zoe lets her defenses down, Nick begins to see a competent and caring woman. One whose wounds are as deep as his own. But as they fall for each other, Nick and Zoe must learn the hardest lesson of all—to forgive. Only then can they heal the past and embrace the future . . . together.

This is a sweet contemporary romance with believable characters in a lovely island setting off the coast of Southern WA State. I like books set at a bed-and-breakfast where you meet more than just the hero and heroine--and you get a glimpse into the inner workings of hearts. You won't be sorry if you decide to take a chance on this author and this book. It's the first one in a series, and I'm looking forward to the next two! I was given a review copy by the author and this is my own opinion--I was not asked to give a good review.

Island Refuge ( Wildflower B & B Romance , Book 1)
by: Kimberly Rose Johnson
Fantastic, I just want to say that Island Refuge was my first book to read by Kimberly Johnson and I absolutely loved it , and I will be reading more by this new author I have found. Island Refuge is one of those books that when you get started you do not want to put it down till the end. It is a good clean romance and the first book in the Wildflower B & B Romance. Dr. Nick Jackson has left medicine behind him and is now the proud owner of a bed-and-breakfast that looks pretty shabby. What has he got his self into? The B & B is on a tiny Wildflower Island in the Puget Sound. Zoe Griffin has walked away from her five-star chef job that she has always dreamed of . She loved her job till something came up and then she just has to get away. She has been hired by Nick to cook and clean at his B & B. She is a little klutzy and messy her first day on the job. She just knows that her new handsome boss will fire her before the first day is over. As I was reading , I caught myself laughing several times. Nick and Zoe both are easy to like. There is some attraction between both, but they both are running away from their past and guarding their hearts. Can both forget and forgive to be able to go on with their lives? Wow, I can’t wait to read the next book in Wildflower B & B Romance.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review, which I have given.

Island Refuge, *****Wildflower B&B Romance Series, book 1
by Kimberly Rose Johnson

This is a sweet romance set on Wildflower Island in the Puget Sound. Leaving his past behind, Nick Jackson is starting a new chapter in his life as the owner of an old B&B. Heart broken Zoe Griffin leaves her past behind and is now the chef/housekeeper at a B&B. As they work together, can they really leave their pasts behind, or will it follow them to Wildflower Island? Will they open their hearts to forgive and allow healing of their past hurts?

I enjoyed Nick and Zoe's story showing their struggles as they deal with past hurts. The other characters staying at the B&B capture your heart as well. I like the way the author showed the characters vulnerability and their struggles with life-challenges much like the ones we all have faced in our own lives.

This book has it all: past hurts, betrayal, guilt. How can you move on when your past is weighing you down? Do you turn it over to God, or keep it to yourself?

Nick Jackson opens Wildflower Bed-and-Breakfast in Wildflower, WA. He bought the place when he closed his medical practice. He doesn't feel like anyone can rely on him. He let he wife die, after all. Even if he hadn't known anything was wrong, he feels he should have known and taken better care. How can he forgive himself for that?

Zoe Griffin is an executive chef from a five-star restaurant who becomes Wildflower B&B's cook and housekeeper. Her ex-fiance and ex-best friend betrayed her and she's come here to start over. She's been deceived once. Can she trust Nick with her heart? Does he even want it?

Nick and Zoe are running from pain, but soon realize it follows them no matter where they go. Zoe is reminded she needs to take time and talk to God. She needs to forgive the ones who have hurt her so she can move on. Nick needs to forgive himself over something he had no control over. Will they let God heal their hearts and find love with each other?

I loved this book. The characters grabbed my interest and the plot was engaging. Forgive as God has forgiven you. God never leaves us, but sometimes we forget He's there. This book drew me in to the characters' struggles and their weakened relationship with God. When we are struggling or don't understand why things happen, God is right there to comfort us. We just need to turn to Him and let Him heal our hearts. I look forward to more books by Kimberly Rose Johnson.

This book was free on my Kindle and I was desperate for something to read. Enough said right there. This book has five star ratings after five star ratings. I am baffled.

It's Christian fiction. I didn't know that before reading. I don't have a problem with that as I am a Christian who loves to read. But Christian fiction is always terrible. This book just didn't do anything for me. It was so juvenile...in dialogue, in character development or the lack there of, and in plot. Yeah...not a fan. But keep trying Christian fiction writers and I will keep hoping for the best.

My Rating: Skip it.

This was a very entertaining story--easy to get into the characters and their frame of mind. Easy read, hard to put down. I especially enjoyed Zoe and her tenacity at this job that wasn't her first choice. Delightful romance included, making me wish the book were a little longer. Waiting for sequel.

Island Refuge, Book #1 of the Wildflower Bed and Breakfast series, is another beautiful story by Kimberly Rose Johnson. She never disappoints. The story and the characters drew me in. I did not want to lay it down.
I loved the Bed & Breakfast setting! And what could be even more romantic than a B&B located on an island? Picture ferry rides across the waterway, beautiful wildflowers, adirondack chairs overlooking the water—ahhh, just the kind of place that beckons to me.
Off to a difficult start in their employer/employee relationship, Nick and Zoe soon start to see the softer side of each other. Pain and unforgiveness stand in the way of them learning to let go of the past and move into a relationship though. What will it take for them to move beyond their past? This romance is coupled with a bit of mystery that compliments the story well. Who is this person staying at the B&B, and why is she here? She obviously isn’t your usual overnight guest.
Ms Johnson writes on some tender issues such as the loss of a spouse, broken relationships, foster parenting, lost confidence, and learning to trust again beyond the pain—trusting both your heart, and the Lord to help you work through your future. Her use of both prayer and scripture reinforce the theme of the book.
A copy of this book was provided to me in exchange for my honest review. I was not asked to give a positive review.

This is a delightful inspirational romance.

The title couldn't be any better “Island Refuge” says it all. There are three prominent characters; Zoe, Nick, and Rachel. Each of them is carrying a deep hurt inside that they aren't willing to talk about at the beginning of the book. They simply need a safe place to stay while they heal. The B&B on Wildflower Island is the perfect place for that. The development of these three incredible characters is wonderful. I love the way the author gradually brings out each of their stories and reveals their broken hearts. Then a secondary character mentions that she prays about things and the journey to reestablish a relationship with God begins.

I had never read anything by Kimberly Rose Johnson before. This novel is a job well done and I will be looking for more of her books.

I received a free eBook copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Rough start. Ending way too quick

The beginning and ending need more work. I liked the characters and was interested, but the story needed more development. And the end is completely unbelievable. Spoiler: how can two people end up declaring their mutual love and desire to get married without a single define-the-relationship conversation?

In spite of occasional poor syntax ("He'd been waiting for what seemed like forever...") and an awkward synonym for kissing (lip lock), this book is better written than most Christian fiction.

Sadly, it falls into the typical pitfalls of most modern CF:

1) The heroine is wallowing in insecurity (Jane Eyre and Elizabeth Bennett, where are you when I need you?)
2) The protagonists tingle every time the touch.
3) A few simple prayers make everything come out all right in the end.

But if you want a quick, clean read with a dash of humor (and mouth-watering descriptions of food), this will do the trick.

I rarely ever read contemporary fiction. The point is to escape, right!?! But it’s winter in Minnesota and life on an island with only breakfast to cook sounded so appealing. This book did not disappoint in the least!

Plus it raises an interesting question: can we truly hide from our past? Life is not easy, but sometimes we just need to forgive others, let go of our own guilt, learn to trust again, and follow God’s leading. After all, life is meant to be shared.

Short, but so sweet!

Okay. WHERE does it say on the GR blurb that this is a Christian romance??

Nope. I cant see any reference to god or church or 'inspirational' so it was something of a shock when this novel suddenly became "church-preachy-praying outside to god" at the 60% mark. Nothing up until then. Ad then it was as if the author was making up for not mentioning god earlier in the book.

I stopped reading at 67%. The story seemed to have little if any structure or reality. A five star chef who burns bread and seems fairly incompetent at times? The peculiar long-term guest? The 'friend' who was particularly obnoxious? A sub-plot that seemed farcical?

I am not rating this at the moment, because had I realised it was 'churchy-preachy' I would not have downloaded it.

Dr. Nick Jackson has decided to quit practicing medicine and buy a bed and breakfast on a beautiful island in Washington state. He hires Zoe Griffin, a chef from a five-star restaurant, to cook and clean for his bed and breakfast. They are both looking for a change of pace and to get away from pain in their lives. Will they find what they are looking for? Will they be able to look past their pain and hurt?

I loved this book! What a great story about relationships between the characters in this story and about their faith in God. From the very first chapter, it held my interest. So many times during the story, I could relate to Zoe's personality. I found myself thinking I would have said or done the same thing. I love when I can relate to a character in a book!

I really like Kimberly Rose Johnson's style of writing. She gives you enough detail and information to feel like you really know these characters and can feel their pain. I found myself not being able to put the book down, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The cover for this book is beautiful and just as I picture the bed and breakfast to look like. I will definitely read more from this author and can't wait to see what the next books in this series will bring.

I was given an e-copy of this book for my honest review.

Chef Zoe Griffin catches her boyfriend cheating with her friend, since all three work together at a 5-star restaurant in Portland, Oregon Zoe decides to quit and move to Wildflower Island, Washington. After a tragedy strikes Dr. Nick Jackson sells his practice to run and own a Bed and Breakfast. Was buying an old B&B that needs a lot of TLC a hasty decision though? Zoe becomes the new cook and housekeeper but will that be enough for someone who has always dreamed of being a prestigious chef? After a few mishaps Zoe is convinced that Nick is looking to replace her. Rachel is a guest that is staying at the B&B for the whole summer, for some reason Zoe immediately becomes suspicious of Rachel. As the book progresses you put the pieces together that due to her childhood trust doesn’t come easy for Zoe. Something happens that really puts Zoe on alert so she decides to confront Rachel, Zoe finally finds out why Rachel is really there.

Will Nick and Zoe learn to forgive and let go of past hurts or will they let their past dictate their future?

I gave this book four stars only because I felt there could have been more detail in certain places to help the story flow better. I have read other stuff by this author and detail is not an issue, that’s why it’s hard for me to give this book four stars instead of five.

Heart-Warming, Gentle Romance...

Kimberly Rose Johnson has written a heart-warming gentle romance in Island Refuge. Nick Jackson, "doctor in a former life," is hiding from a past failure. Zoe Griffin, executive chef of a five star restaurant, has been hurt and humiliated beyond her ability to bear and needs an escape. Their paths cross when Nick establishes a B&B off the Washington coast and hires a cook via his former employee.

Overhearing a phone conversation early on, Zoe is convinced that Nick is set on replacing her. This fear rules her life and many decisions she makes regarding her employment and relationship with Nick.

Nick struggles with his own demons from the past, while a mysterious guest at the B&B holds answers that can affect them all. This is a sweet, clean romance that lopes haltingly along because of the characters' all too - human failing to trust in God, but trusting in their own understanding and acting thereon.

Will Nick and Zoe decide to put aside their self-doubts and trust God for healing, or will they cling to their own understanding and muddle along? A light, fun read that was a breath of fresh air.

I was enjoying this as a light fluffy read until it suddenly went Christian lit. I often enjoy christian lit but dislike when it comes on suddenly and hasn't been a part of the story all along as this did or when it becomes a sermon. Guilty on that count as well. Sometimes it just feels like the author is telling a story and then remembers "oh yeah, this is supposed to be Christian lit so I'd better add something". And that is what this one felt like to me.
I often didn't really understand why the characters behaved like they did. The boss is super nice and seemingly forgiving of goofs but has called the employment agency for a replacement. And he is forgiving of what amounts to breaking and entering and what would be theft if he didn't go along with the girl taking it in the end and reprimands his employee for being suspicious of the guest before he knows what is going on. If you want to protects guests wouldn't you want to do more about crime going on in your establishment?
I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop but nothing bad ever really happens aside from a few arguments.
So in a nutshell this book is clean, overly simplistic and overly sermonizing. But if you just want to read something light and not think too hard it may still be okay.

Island Refuge

I would have loved to see the antiques that were left in the Wildflower Island Bed and Breakfast. Interesting that that is the first thing I talk about? Maybe, but because our heroine Zoe does not really like the style, it sets the tone for the story. And later on in the novel you see how this furniture figures quite largely in the interactions between the different characters. I have a friend whose name is Zoe, and I was reminded of her as I read the story. Both are strong in the face of hardship, both persevere. Nick is also a strong character, but both he and Zoe are running from their past. I loved how Kimberly had them work through the things that bothered them, how some minor characters were the catalysts for change and how it all came together. Including Aidan and Max in the story made for some humor. I really loved this book, and am sure you will too.

Thank you Kimberly Rose Johnson for the opportunity to read this book.

This is my first book by this author. I love books set on islands especially if the island is made for romance. A second plus was the book takes place in an old B&B which is being refurbished. Any books with this setting and atmosphere are a winner. Seriously though, this book had just the right mix.

Zoe Griffin has left her life in the big city working at a 5 star restaurant in order to start over at this small, up and coming B&B. She walks away from the world she always dreamed. Has she made a mistake?

Dr. Nick Jackson wants as far away from medicine as possible. What could get him there? Owning this small, up and coming B&B. He also wonders if he has made a mistake in buying the Inn and trying to refurbish it.

Throw in a semi permanent resident with secrets of her own and you have the makings of a great story.

Will these three come to find out who they really are? Will Zoe and Nick decide that their decisions may not have been the worse they could have made? Read the story to find out how it all works in the end. Cannot wait for Book 2!

This is the first book I have read by this author. I will read more since I enjoyed this one so much.
I am partial to the B&B setting as I have always wanted to own one myself.
When Zoe Griffin comes to Wildflower Island to work in a B&B after a heartbreak, she soon comes to terms with the pain of a life lived in unforgiveness and heartache. When she meets owner Nick Jackson she is afraid of what this choice she has made may cost her.
Nick, having his own heartaches from his past plans to make this work. Soon, they work side by side to make this into the Island retreat many would use.
Along the way, with a long term resident, that holds secret from her past as well; the three are thrown together and become friends. Will hearts be healed and made whole? With a God moment will Nick and Zoe be able to open broken hearts and trust again?
This was an easy read, and I read it in one sitting. I will patiently await the next in this series. I have found another author I know I will enjoy!
I was given this book to read in return for a review.

Island Refuge is the first book in the Wildflower B&B series by Kimberly Rose Johnson. Zoe Griffin walked away from her dream job as a five-star chef and retreated to the tiny island in the Puget Sound. Now working as a cook and maid at the rundown bed-and-breakfast, she begins to feel at home Dr Nick Jackson is done with medicine and decides that owning and running the B&B is just what he needs but his new employee is giving him plenty of doubts. But as Zoe begins to let down her defense, Nick sees a competent, caring and yet deeply wound woman. As they begin to fall for each other, they both learn the hardest lesson of all. Can they find a way to forgive, heal the past and move forward with a future together?
Island Refuge is a clean romance with a hint of Christian faith. I say a hint because it didn’t read like a faith based romance until suddenly it was. It seemed to come out of nowhere as if the author suddenly remembered she needed to add the characters' faith. And the faith was a little more fluffy than I would have liked. However, I liked Zoe as a woman searching for a fresh start, a place to hide and lick her wounds. Nick was a harder character to like as he was a bit more hardened. However, as the two grew to know each other and their wounds revealed, it was great to see them together. Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was a quick read for a lazy afternoon. If you enjoy clean romances, I recommend Island Refuge.

Island Refuge is available in paperback, eBook and audiobook

The good news is, this was a typical three-star book, it didn’t “wow,”, but it also didn’t offend. I finished it a few years ago, record my thoughts on my Excel list, but failed to write a review. Here it is.

My first test I give a book is its ability to grab me, to pull me in and compel me to engage with the book. I found it far too easy to stop reading, no late, night reads. Now and again it felt tedious, especially with the angst between the lead characters, and the periods of self-reflection. I admit, I do not relish protracted angst used as a plot device to stretch out a story. It appeared that the faith-element was not organic, almost as if faith was not a comfortable thing, but an add-on. I wasn't as invested in the story or the characters as I enjoy being with an engrossing story. Like I stated above, the story was not offensive, but rather it was an average read, a get-away read, a long-distance airplane flight read. The next book I read from Johnson on my to-be-read list is “The Sleuth's Miscalculation.” Try out, Island Refuge, by Kimberly Rose Johnson and find out if this is your type of book. Readers have divergent opinions; this book might be just what you need for a good getaway read.

This was my first time reading anything from this author. I really enjoyed the book. Yes, it's a sweet book, and a slow burn kind of love. It was so sweet though! There's a bit of mystery, humour, love, and a little bit of everything.
It did start off a bit slow for me, but with all the twists and turns, I couldn't stop thinking about what would happen next.
Nick buys a B&B on an island and needs a cook and housekeeper. In walks or I should say, driving crazy, is Zoe. Zoe is a bit clumsy, and things happen, and Nick is there to support her. They both have backgrounds they keep hidden from one another. When Rachel, the suspicious guest finally comes free about what is happening, they all pitch in to help her, even Aiden.
Both Zoe and Nick have a bit of soul searching and need some guidance from God, and they both get it in their own time. They need to find themselves again.
I really liked the storyline, and the twists and turns, but again it was a slow burn to find love.

Great

How can one go on after being hurt, having so much guilt, being betrayed?
Nick Jackson, was a doctor. He quit his practice and moved to Washington state. He opened a B&B. He felt guilty after his wife had died.
He hired Zoe Griffen, a chef from a five star restaurant.
They both needed a change of pace because of their own circumstances. Their faith in God had been tested.
They both issues with trusting others.
Wildflower Island is so beautiful and relaxing.
Zoe doesn't trust herself around Nick.,and he doesn't trust himself around her either.
Rachel, one of the guests has problems also. She will have help to deal with them.
They each somehow help each other.
This is a great story.

This book was a quick read that I enjoyed. As Zoe in the book said reading romance novels helps her escape reality for a while and they always have happy endings.

The story is about Nick, a new b&b owner to an old house in need of fixing (just like his heart) and Zoe a chef that is running to a do-over as a cook at the b&b. As Nick repairs the house (like his heart) and Zoe finds peace, they find each other.

Great read

I thought the book was just a great read all over. I loved the descriptive writing, however I felt it was a rather “rushed” book. Everything built quickly and finished quickly.

Finished the entire book in a few hours and felt I needed more from the story. Still not sure what though. I needed more of something. Will have to see what happens in the next book.

Thank you.

This book is exactly what you might expect, a sweet little cozy romance. There are no real surprises or huge struggles. The characters are interchangeable with most books of this type. It is an easy read and basically a Hallmark movie waiting to be filmed. I will not seek out more stories by this author but I also will not avoid her. If you want great literature you don't get free downloads on Kindle.

Island Refuge is a heartwarming story. The author did a nice job of showing the realistic workings behind the operation of a bed and breakfast without making it tedious. The characters are well developed but I related more to Nick than to Zoe. At times her immaturity or overreaction to a situation annoyed me. Having never visited the Pacific Northwest, I enjoyed the descriptions of the area and was able to visualize its beauty. A fun read with a nice happily-ever-after.
