Putting together a graphic novel limited series based on a currently active movie series puts the writer in a tough place - first, the story has to work within the already established SMILE universe, while at the same time not being able to use any elevated, 5-star golden ideas (as I am sure that the movie producers would want them for the more profitable movie franchise).
As a result, Smile: For the Camera is not doing anything groundbreaking with having a group of supermodels as the protagonists - especially as Smile 2 had a super famous pop-star as the target (and therefore the potential for spreading the Smile curse has been turned up to eleven at the end of the movie).
What Smile: For the Camera does anew is telling the story of multiple cycles of the curse taking effect. So while you do not get too connected to the stakes for any single protagonist, you are given a quick run through the different potential ways a cursed target could try to escape or meet their fate due to the curse.
In addition, this series also adds an interesting new 'curse rule' to the mix. Whether or not the rule will be picked up by the movie franchise remains to be seen.
The artistry is very top notch - there was one variant cover that I wanted to share here, but I felt it was too scary for an unassuming audience.
