I ended up enjoying this book quite a bit. The atmosphere was probably my favorite part the eerie lake town, the damaged magic, and the emotional tension around Aella’s past all created a really immersive vibe. The story has that quiet supernatural mystery feeling that slowly pulls you in instead of forcing action every chapter, which I appreciated.

Aella also felt believable to me. Her reluctance to reconnect with magic and the emotional weight she carries made her more human than a lot of fantasy protagonists I’ve read lately.

The reason I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 5 honestly has more to do with the presentation than the writing itself. After finishing the book, I don’t think the current cover fully reflects the depth, mood, or emotional pull of the story inside. The book has a darker, richer magical atmosphere than the cover communicates, and I almost passed on it because I assumed it was a lighter fantasy read.

That would’ve been a mistake because there’s actually a strong paranormal mystery and emotional core here. I genuinely think a cover that better matches the tone could attract a much wider audience for this series.

Still very interested in continuing with the Four Corners books.
