Elise gave her life on Earth pulling a drowning boy from the surf. She expected peace, or perhaps oblivion. Instead, she opens her eyes in the body of an unacknowledged noble's daughter—illiterate, penniless, and two months away from being sold into serfdom. Her options are marry a hunter's son who reeks of wet dog, become the plaything of a steward's lecherous son, or beg a grandfather who would only laugh her off his estate. Then, a status panel materializes in her mind. [Light Theology] (Lv. 1) [Yassian Language] (Lv. 1) No combat skills. No free stat points. Just one terrifying anything she learns, she retains forever. Now, Elise has a new choice. Become a nun. Master the Codex. Awaken to the transcendent. She may have started as a destitute and forgotten outcast, but she is destined to become a legend—the most radiant Saintess the Church of Light has ever known.
It was very repetitive. And there wasn't a lot of thought behind it. Although I didn't go into this expecting deep theology, still it was all superficial. I just wanted to read a story where for once the church isn't depicted as the big bad.
As I mentioned it is all superficial. Elise has absolutely no issues. She spawns into a life of poverty and proceeds to cheat her way out. Which to be fair is par the course for the Isekai genre. She doesn't meet a god who gives her a new chance at life. (which would have been a better set up in my opinion. She joins the church of the god who gave her new life. Interesting premise.) Nope she dies and wakes up in a hovel. and immediately ,as we're told ad nauseam, uses her modern day education and sensibilities to level up and cement herself as a genius. Not terrible but as I said it's boring.
There are no conflicts. seriously. In the beginning she's destitute. She also has a persistent suitor who's faults are he doesn't bathe and is dirt poor. The priest initially doesn't want to teach her, but is won over within a day. She's threatened by a stewards son, but is safe the next day by becoming a nun. The knight who's sent to escort her immediately falls in love and is ready to lay his life on the line for her. (never mind he didn't want the escort assignment to begin with.) She gets both prominent mentors, instead of having to choose one. Everyone is envious of her. Including her mentors and her classmates. But nothing comes of the jealousy because she's blessed and highly favored. The major fight happens around her. And in the end she gets a revelation about needing to revolutionize the world.
I did not enjoy this story. I could go on, but I don't really want to talk about it all that much. It was boring, nothing new and wasn't even good for a quick diversion. There was just one other thing. If the narrator isn't established as having a running commentary with the reader, don't add phrases like: "Little did she know that in the future this would happen. Yada, yada." That is not good foreshadowing and absolutely breaks the immersion for me. Of course she doesn't know we haven't gotten to that part of the story yet. So recommended? No Buy/Borrow? Borrow
The original conflict of becoming a serf and marrying some disgusting guy is set up and resolved in the first 5 chapters, may as well not be there. The way the escalating people targeting of her doesn’t seem very convincing to me. If the man cares so much for his son that he was willing and able to spread rumours to result in assassins being sent after her surely he would have been capable enough to send his son away. A lot of the novel is just people being like ‘there’s no way she can do the thing’ then she does the thing and then they’re like ‘woh, she’s a genius!’ There’s no actual conflict either even in parts where it seems like there should be. The one fight scene/ actions sequence is over in seconds with ‘bands of light’ capturing the cultists immediately. While it does demonstrate how dangerous awakened are among normal people it is kinda a shame we don’t get to see any of the conflict except its aftermath in the village. Definitely flawed, the system, magic and world building is just interesting enough for me to keep reading. Overall still an enjoyable read.
I love this book and I love her thought processes. My issue is the description of casting magic and her understanding of the theology in general. It’s very wordy round-a-bout jargon. If they wanted to to seem hard I feel their would be a better way to do that instead it just seems because if her “modern mindset” every thing just makes sense to her and she can essentially brute force through it idk I don’t understand what they are implying it just feels like forced to be unnecessarily complicated.
This story proves you don't need a super powerful or overly suffering MC to have a great time reading a book, there was no romance, incredible action sequences or betrayals you just need a solid coherent main character who grows constantly and acts in an intelligent fashion with the information she has. It's been a while since I couldn't put a boom down. I can't wait for the next book.
I liked the premise of the book, but there was no major conflict. The main character resolved all issues through studying and devoting herself to a church. There were parts of the book that came across as either AI generated (or edited). If that is not the case, I apologize. The author reused paragraphs of text, the narrator would randomly shift, and some of the details would change as the story progressed.
I read an insane amount, at least 300 books a year and it's rare that I review any.
I've just read this in one go, unlike a lot of progression books Elise isn't instantly the saviour of the universe. Steady growth, both as a character and story wise. Can't wait for the next
Just like the first series(which I am eagerly awaiting to be released again so that I can read it and the redo as well!) I simply could not put this down.
As always love Liliths books and will be eagerly awaiting the next ones!
The story is very engaging, the only criticism i have for it is the convoluted magic system, or how it was presented. It could have been simpler to explain in less words, and those pages could have been used to progress character development.
Excellent world and religion Building opti.magic but not unbelievably ideal. About to pre-order book 2. Unique presentation. Looking forward to series.
