Thirteen words in a want-ad turn Tess Cooper’s world upside down after she signs on as a paranormal research assistant to the mysterious Davin Egypt. He reveals a world of grave robbing, clockworks artifacts in blue amber, antique revolvers that fire strange ammo, and powerful forces beyond human comprehension.

As ancient occult energies threaten to destroy her city, Tess must use her journalistic instincts to stay one step ahead of the public works director, Drew Dawson, whose agenda seems bent on destruction rather than maintenance. And possibly murder, but will anyone believe her?

Yeah, right. When garbage trucks fly.

If Tess teams up with the hunky police lieutenant, Kirk Gunther, and the pale, oddball Mr. Egypt, they might be able to save the city in time. That is, if Egypt even wants to. And if Tess overcomes her phobias long enough to do battle in Granddad’s 1983 Subaru Brat.

Eric Turowski is the author of Willing Servants, 21st Century Pulp, as well as numerous short stories. He is the general manager and part owner of the Alameda Sun newspaper in Alameda, California, as well as a resident of that fair city.

Interests are writing, fencing, anthropology, ghost hunting, painting, drawing, inventing things already invented, cryptozoology, dinosaurs, playing guitar and being an american "idle".

Like to write and play music, punk rock, for the most part. Influences are the Beatles, the Ramones, Blue Oyster Cult, David Bowie and the Buzzcocks.

Some favorite movies are Jaws, the Exorcist, Buckaroo Bonzai and Star Wars. Anything with zombies, big bugs and demons a big plus here, love the blood and gore of a horror flick. I can also appreciate a really bad B movie as well.

Television shows I enjoy are Eureka, Sesame Street, Josie &; The Pussycats, Scoobie Doo, X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Night Stalker, Lost, Murder and Ghost Hunters(to name a few).

Heroes besides my mother, father, and girlfriend... Darren McGavin, William Shatner and Stan (the man) Lee. Batman, of course...why? He can kick Supermans ass and he has no super powers! Plus he has all the cool toys!

If you like Evanovich's Stephanie Plum you're sure to love Turowski's Tess Cooper. There are many laugh out loud moments with Tess getting into all sorts of trouble. The characters are very likable in this fast paced book, I had a hard time putting it down. The writing is very clever and well done. I am hooked on Tess Cooper and can't wait for many more journeys with her.

Inhuman Interest by Eric Turowski is a fun paranormal mystery novel that follows Tess Cooper as she discovers that there are some awfully strange things going on her world. Tess Cooper is a reporter who wants to write hard-hitting and important pieces. Unfortunately, the newspaper that she works for does not want that type of story and she keeps getting assigned fluff pieces. Sooner or later, she's going to lose her job. When Tess spots a strange want-ad in the paper, she soon finds herself working for a very weird man named Egypt as a paranormal research assistant and she must delve into the weird new world around her to save her town from impending doom.
The Good
Inhuman Interest is a fast-paced and fun novel. Firstly, Tess Cooper is a great character who feels very realistic. She is a young woman who wants to work and make a name for herself with hard hitting journalism. She doesn't let her backwards newspaper editor stop her from following her leads into anything she thinks needs investigation. It's nice to read a book about a woman who works hard and, surprise surprise, goes to work! I've read too many books where the main character seem to have infinite time off, no matter what their job is. Once the story starts, they essentially abandon their careers and go on with the story. Not Tess! Her ambition is integral to the story.

The world itself is very interesting. Tess's town is your average small and downtrodden town that you'd find throughout America. Below the surface, though, there is a great deal of magic going on. When the town is afflicted with a rash of repeated grave-robbings, Tess discovers that there is an underlying network of people who know about the paranormal and who use the powers for good and evil. Tess has to use her experience in investigative journalism to find a solution before her town is utterly destroyed.

The storyline is very quick paced but easy to follow. There is enough mystery to keep you wondering who the culprit is and the book moves at a pace that keeps you interested throughout the whole book. The secondary characters are all realistic and really well-written. Tess lives with her grandfather who is a supportive character and adds a bit of humor to the book. Egypt, her new boss, is a very strange man who reveals his softer side as the story progresses. The antagonists are threatening but not over-the-top.
The Bad
The only real negative I had with this book was the romance. Tess, as a reporter, often works with the cops for her stories. She meets a new police officer who recently took over the PR liaison job at the local station. Though she doesn't like him at first, she is immediately attracted to him and he shares the sentiment. Their relationship develops rather quickly.

I didn't think that the romance was particularly unbelievable but I did find that I just didn't care about it. I didn't connect with the police officer character and I didn't feel any real chemistry between them. By the end of the book I felt that they were closer to each other than they should have been and I would honestly have rather had no romance at all in this book.
The Verdict
This is a really fun book! If you like paranormal mysteries, I'd highly recommend it. The world is fun and it's such an easy read that you can finish it in no time. I look forward to reading the next one.

original review @ JC's Book Haven.

"The one from the want ads?" Granddad worked the chaw around in his mouth. "Seems kinda hinky to me. Just remember what I always taught you. If he gets out of hand --"
"I Know, I know. Go for the eyes, but kick him in the balls."
He smiled, "That's my girl."

The Good

Tess Cooper is a well written protagonist. She's a reporter who does what she thinks is right despite the cost. While doing so, she tends to stumble upon life threatening situations.

She ends up meeting Davin, Egypt a expert in the occult. She also meets Lieutenant Gunther who seems to take a special interest in her. While Supernatural things happen in the book, you never feel like you're in a fantasy world. It feels very real.

The Bad

I was hoping for a bit more action I guess as most of the supernatural occurrences happen off screen so to speak. I would have liked to see a bit more happen in real time instead of the main characters trying to figure out what happened most of the time.

The Romance

Tess and the Lieutenant do strike up a bit of a romance while she briefly ponders what it would be like to date Davin.

Conclusion

Overall, Inhuman Interest was enjoyable. To be honest, it felt like an episode of the x-files. If you like a bit of the occult mixed with mystery and investigation all wrapped up with a bit of bad luck, then you’ll enjoy this book. Plus, I really love the granddad in the story. He was my favorite character.

Tess is a reporter at a local newspaper. There had been four cemetery burglaries in the city, each about a month apart. Tess called the police and asked for Detective Austin and asked if they had figured out that the guy hit during the full moon. It had been a five month investigation. Corpses had been taken, but the valuables hadn't. Tess loved mysteries, but felt she was going to get fired from the paper as they had her working on stories she didn't like. Devon Egypt ran an ad for an assistant for two years starting ASAP. Tess was the first to apply. He wanted her to help with occult research. Devon worked at night. He was a very odd man. I found Tess to be quite a character, not really knowing what she was doing when she started working for Devon. She grew to trust him. She was smart, mentally strong and could be a very determined person when she chose to be. She was also compassionate and caring. I enjoyed this book. I would probably recommend it to science fiction readers.

Just finished today and I want more! Inhuman Interest is a quick, easy engrossing read. Your interest is piqued immediately and you'll continue to want to know what happens next! Tess Cooper is a reporter for the local newspaper who gets herself in to all kinds of situations! She is more of a detective and at times wiser than the police when it comes to all the mysterious events happening around the city. While reading it was easy to step in to her shoes and go for the journey of this story along with her. Author Eric Turowski flawlessly combines mystery, humor, sci-fi and romance into his writing of Inhuman Interest. You'll laugh out loud. You'll root for the characters. You'll be trying to solve the mystery right along with Tess and the police. Can't wait for the next book in the series! I was left with questions that just need answers!

Uhm.. this is a hard book to really place into one genre. This book will have you up ALL night, and when I say all night, I mean just that. There is no sleep when reading this book! Seat gripping! The situations that come along as you're reading are enough to make you need more! A new to me author and can't wait to read more of what this author will bring to the public. I can't say that there is anything in this book that wasn't liked or enjoyed. I can't do spoilers! It's just not in me, but it you really want to know happens behind the cover... I dare you to purchase this book and see for yourself!

This book was fun and seemed to go so fast. It's a bit of a relief to read a supernatural romance that doesn't involve werewolves or vampires. Tess is a lot of fun, in a Stephanie Plum sort of way, while Egypt is creepy but you get the feeling that he's been through things (interesting things) and want to know more. The cop boyfriend (whose name I've already forgotten) is pretty generic.

I did feel like the book could have spared some time to develop the characters more completely but hopefully that will be explored in the next book. In particular I hope we learn more about Egypt as he seems like an interesting (and mysterious) character.

I read this book for NetGalley.

This book is fun and funny. Mr. Turowski takes the old girl reporter theme and blends it in with humor and creepy occult/paranormal characters.

Tess Cooper, the protagonist, is a really likeable investigative reporter who has to take a second job as a researcher/assistant to the mysterious Davin Egypt. Mr. Egypt is an occult researcher who leads Tess into weirder and weirder situations. They eventually battle an occult master intent on destroying Egypt and well as most of Tess's hometown.

This is an enjoyable book with a lot of humor. If you want some spooky entertainment, this book is it.

I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange of an honest review. Thank you, Booktrope!
A cross between Doctor Who and the X Files, Inhuman Interest is a lot of fun. When Tess Cooper, a no-nonsense journalist, answers a want ad to become a paranormal research assistant, she discovers a new world she didn't know existed. And this new world is creepy but awesome, especially her new boss Davin Egypt, a mysterious man who seems to know everything. The bad guys are a little obvious, but the development of the plot is entertaining and well written.

I love an author who can tie genres together, and make it all seem plausible.

If you like: well drawn characters who get themselves into impossible situations; mystery and the occult; plotting and planning set in the real world that actually affect the metaphysical one; and a story that will leave you waiting for more, then you need to read this book!

I look forward to the next installment in Tess' adventures into the weird with her mysterious companion.
