I am amazed at how fast I read this, could be because it's very intriguing, wanted to see what would happen next, I just couldn't put it down. Thinking yep this bear was going to take what he wanted, darn!! he didn't he was too much of a gentlman. Which could be good, i just wanted to be BAD! When I got to the end I was a little miffed you see I've never been a fan for cliffhangers. As I'm into this book I guess I have no choice. Hopefully it won't be to long for Part 2.
Ryker is a Black Bear Shifter, in the military special forces unit, as its top secret he can't tell anyone anything about his job. Making the decision to become a lifer figuring he'd build his career then think about settling down.  Ryker took a few days off and went hiking to the top of the mountain at
Emerald Lake, he needed to let his bear run loose. Thinking of hurrying to get to the top  he hits something and falls down. Can't believe he tripped over a boulder because he was hurrying only to realize it was a body, a live body that's moving!
Charlene was running she did everything she could to make sure he couldn’t find her.
She even bought a new laptop  in case he had the old one bugged, not even leaving a paper trail. Skypeing him on his week out of town for meetings to let him know she was leaving. After years of abuse she finally had enough and ran. I was gifted this ARC for an honest and truthful review.

I received this for a honest review. I have read several books from this author. I should of known that she would end part 1 in a way that makes you stomp your feet and scream for book 2. My thoughts to the author is “You little tease”. LOL

Ryker was more than this handsome bear shifter. He was in the military and was in the Special Forces Unit. The military knew he was a shifter and used that to their advantage. Ryker was just out enjoying nature and wanting to let his bear free for a bit. What he was not looking for was his mate. Ryker did not want a steady woman at the moment. He wanted to spend more time with his military career.

Charlene was a beautiful plus size woman. She had a hard life putting up with an abusive ex. No this did not make her weak. Charlene was every bit of a strong woman. She was a survivor. I found I had a lot of respect for Charlene.

Charlene had found herself hurt with a twisted ankle hiking up to her destination on Emerald Lake. Lucky for her she had the sexy angel come along and help her out.

Charlene and Ryker cannot deny the attraction for one another. Ryker feels the strong need to protect her and keep her safe. The problem is Ryker has a secret. One that he must protect. How will Charlene react when she finds out he is a shifter? Will Ryker be able to keep Charlene safe?

First part of story. So it is a short read and there is a cliffhanger.
Minor misspelled/repeated words and inconsistencies in scenes that had me confused. e.g: Overall I was excited to read about a BMWW BBW story. Not that many I've come across. Will read the next parts =)

Great start to this shifter romance I can't wait for the next book
Ryker is a black bear shifter working in the military. On a much needed day off her was running in the woods heading to Emerald lake. He ends up almost falling over Charlene who had hurt her ankle so he carred her. On the hike he finds outs she is running from an ex.
Great story. Love the characters and the build in the story. It's a really fun read.
Book gifted for an honest review and I honestly loved it.

I am shocked by the number of four and five star ratings here because this book was absolute crap. Totally crappy. Rubbish. In the garbage bin type trash. Because that is how Wright writes.
Wright has no idea how to form a sentence. In a book of 73 pages there are approximately 150 incorrect sentences. A writer can break a rule for emphasis, but they need to understand the rules first. In regards to her correct sentences there is variety in formation but, once she uses one type of sentence, she will use that form repeatedly for several pages until a different form is introduced and reused for the next pages.
The plot itself is okay — Wright introduces some new ideas and that is refreshing but ends with a cliffhanger, encouraging the reader to buy the next book. Unfortunately for her, that is only effective for a well written story. She tells, over and over again, rather than showing through action. She is the master of restatement and there is no subtlety in her work. This combination results in a very immature writing style. If the superfluous words were deleted, the book would be halved.
Lastly, I felt no engagement with the characters. Charlene has potential as a strong female character, but Ryker as a 23 year old special forces soldier of considerable experience does not ring true. I particularly didn’t like the idea of him pushing prescription drugs onto her as pain relief. Vicodin is an opioid pain medication and has no place in a book like this, especially without a prescription.
I will not be reading the second story.

1.50 Stars. (WW/BM). Audible romance package book with narration by Steven Washington. The narrator is good; but the story falls short. I know the story is short; but I expected more interaction between Ryker and Charlene as a means of developing their romantic interests in each other and as way of demonstrating their romantic chemistry. Instead of the story portraying Charlene and Ryker as a couple, the author related several unfortunate incidents of each of their childhoods followed by an unwanted and unexpected intrusion by Charlene’s estranged abusive husband. Ryker saves the day again...cliffhanger.

Ryker and Charlene

He found her in the worst of times. Running from her old life headlong into a new brighter future. This has a wicked cliffhanger but is a super sweet and well thought out story. Good stuff overall.

Shifter: Black Bear book one by Emerald Wright was a good quick read. Ryker and Charlene meet when Charlene is on the run from her soon to be ex husband. I loved reading about how they met and the secrets they hide. This is a good quick read.

Yet another wonderful story that touches on a delicate subject, spousal abuse. Charlene has had it! After too many years of physical and mental abuse at the hands of her spouse, and all in the name of BDSM, she has finally gathered up enough courage and money to make a run for freedom. But, as in most cases, not all goes as planned. While on her way to what she believes will be her safe house, she trips and falls on the trail, severely spraining her ankle. Ryker needs to let his bear out, or who knows what disaster will happen. He’s on his way up the trail to Emerald Lake to shift and give his bear some well deserved and needed time to run free, only to trip over a woman. And not just any woman, but an injured one, who, by the smell of her, is his fated mate! What are the chances? He’s not ready in his life to find his mate! He’s just starting his military career and there’s no room for anyone else in his life at this time! Or is there? Fate tends to play cruel tricks on us from time to time, enjoying the task of throwing us off of our life course, even though usually it’s for the better. Will Charlene ever manage to get rid of her soon to be ex-husband? Will her and Ryker ever manage to overcome the many obstacles in their way?
Well written and easy to follow, this story will have you on the edge of your seat, and keep you there until the end.

Received this book for an honest review.

The characters have potential to develop into full body participants in the story as the books are written. Right now you get a glimpse of who each person has started to be. I have given this book a three star rating not because I did not like but there is not enough story for me to rate it higher. I plan on reading the other books as they are written because I have faith in the author to do this story justice.

You have Charlene a woman that married before she knew what life was really like and what she could truly accomplish.

Then there is Ryker who had a loving family until he was 5 years of age and then ended up in the foster care system where he had to had who he truly was from everyone. The military was his escape and allowed him to bring his other self out still the world does not know.

Trevor the egomaniac that believes he can own people is the cause of Charlene and Trevor meeting. He will either regain his property or die trying.

This is the first book in the serial so you know there is more to come, stay tuned.

This is an amazing read, I loved every moment of it and was kind of gutted when it finished, I am now dying to read more from this author! For all shifter lovers that love action and a happy ending then this one is a definite read. The character that impressed me the most is Charlene. Running from an abusive husband she is scared and skittish at the beginning, hurting and wary of everyone but as the book continues she begins to build up her confidence and starts to begin a new life. I want to thank Emerald Wright for writing about this hard topic and showing that we al have an inner strength and nobody deserves abuse, that there is always a way out! I really enjoyed Ryker's character, how protective and loving he is, throughout the book he never pressures Charlene and lets her set the pace their relationship went at. I loved the whole book, it is an exciting, fast paced, enthralling novella and I cant wait to read more !!!

Wow what a cliffhanger...

Just as I became engulfed in the story the author hits me with a "to be continued."
Outside of that this book has a well thought out flow. I am really starting to love Ryker and his gentleman qualities. Being a bear shifter is hard for him being in the military because he has to control his shifts. It's hard living in a world where that's unheard of as it is. But the military usually requires that aggressive nature and at 23 yrs. of age Ryker has worked himself up the ranks not thinking about any thing else but his military career. That is until while on a hike he runs or actually trips over a woman that his bear is drawn to. Little does he know that this woman is on the run from an abusive husband. His bear nature takes over and the feeling that he must protect this woman beyond all cause. So as the author says, until next time my review ends here.

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. This is mine!!

This is the start of a serial. Already I feel the characters are well developed.
You love and feel for Charlene. A woman running from an abusive spouse.
Ryker a black bear shifter who found his place in the military after years of bouncing around the foster care system and hiding his bear. Also a lovable character.
Trevor Charlene's abusive husband she's running from. A man who considers her his property. The villain!

The book is told from two POVs Ryker's & Charlene's which I find cool and captivating!!! It shows how both parties have their own insecurities and challenges to overcome!!! You want to see what happens next and if Charlene can accept Ryker's bear. I can't wait to read more!!!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!

Ryker has his life planned, with no interest in having any committed relationship beyond the military. An interesting meeting between Ryker and Charlene. Charlene planned for and left her abusive husband, hoping he would not find her. Ends in a cliffhanger.

Charlene is running from an abusive marriage. Ready to begin a life free from the pain and strife caused from the years of her marriage, she leaves to go to a secluded little town and sprains her ankle on the way there.
Ryker comes along, while on a personal break from the military. He is a were-bear and needs some time to decompress. He literally trips over her on a hike and stops to rescue Charlene from her current situation.
Their attraction is palpable and Ryker feels a connection to Charlene that can only be felt with a mate. He must protect her at all costs.
Charlene's husband finds her and puts her in harms way. Will Charlene ever be able to get away from the life that she has left behind? Will she and Ryker ever be able to be together?

This is a fantastic book I have read. The storyline within this story is riveting and it's interesting and obviously the real point is the love back and forth between the two characters and all of the romance. I enjoy this so much, I couldn't stop reading until I was finish. I love the fact that it's so easy to feel like you're there with the characters . I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a Scorching Hot read with a few plot twists and, of course it's a fantastic love story. This storyline reminds me why I love reading Historical romance. Emerald Wright is truly creative, gifted and very talented. The storyline is well written. I enjoyed the storyline so much from the first page to the last page I was so amazed.

Ryker is a sexy, bear shifter and a military man that is also a gentleman. Charlene is a woman running from an abusive husband. As Ryker meets Charlene out on a hiking trail where she has tripped and sprained her ankle, he carries her on his back to her cabin. He begins to wonder if she is his mate. He also feels very protective of her. Charlene is very attracted to Ryker. Emerald Wright does a great job painting you a picture using only words. I received this book from the author in return for an honest review. It does end with a big cliffhanger, so now I am impatiently waiting for the next book.

A beaten and battered woman, a soldier on a mini vacation and a ex who just won't let her go.
Charlene is on the run from her ex-husband. Hoping to get to her aunt and uncles house before anything else goes wrong. But she has a mishap and meets a stranger on the trail... Will he help her?
Ryker is on leave. Being in the military is hard work especially if your a shorter. You have to shift periodically so as not to shift by accident during a mission. So when he meets a scared and hurt woman on the trail, he is stunned none to less. But why is his bear going crazy over her? And will he act on it?

If it weren't for the humongous cliff hanger, this would be a 5 star read, that and it's just a little short for my taste. Charlene is a woman on the run, her abusive past is literally breathing down her neck and on the way to her hiding place, she trips and injures her ankle. Along comes bear shifter , special forces man Ryker, who feels an instant, overwhelming need to protect her. This book gives a great back story and sets us up for book 2 beautifully, but as I said, great, big cliff hanger !! Ito still a solid 4☆ read for me. Audio review

Nice short story "

What did you like best about Shifter? What did you like least?

I loved how protective he was of Charlene even thought they hadn't know each other long

If you’ve listened to books by Emerald Wright before, how does this one compare?

The narrator was ok but he could use some work on his narrating. He makes the story a little flat not horrible but in a long book it might become annoying.

Any additional comments?

While I liked the story it was short and ended on cliffhanger so I will have to get the next one to see what happens. Not a bad thing just FYI for those who hate cliffhangers

Cliffhanger ending. Charlene is escaping an abusive marriage when she literally trips and sprains her ankle on the way to her family's vacation cabin. Lucky for her Ryker just happened to be in the area and helps her out. Despite the complications of a pending divorce, neither can deny the sizzling attraction between them. "He was being smart. Being a gentleman. Being sensitive to her situation and circumstances." Short and sweet, great start to an interesting story, just wish it wasn't written into a serial. Enjoy! This was a wonderful start to the series, and it ends in a true cliffhanger, with danger and suspense and lives possibly hanging in the balance. In such a short installment, you already find yourself loving the characters, and hoping they get their HEA. Charlene who is just breaking away from her abusive husband and Ryker who has emotionally closed himself off after a childhood in the foster care system just need to break away from their pasts so they can start their future together, I can't wait to see how it ends.

This is an interesting start to a new series. Charlene has been through a lot, and is trying to escape her abusive husband, when she meets Ryker. Ryker doesn't have time for a mate in his life right now, but he can't deny the feelings Charlene brings out in him.

We're left with a cliffhanger, but that is to be expected since it's part one, and warns us of that right in the blurb, so at least it's not a surprise. I can't wait to read the next part in the series and see what happens.

This book is a good start to the series. The charters are likable. The beginning of the story has Charlene and Ryker literally falling over each other as she tries to escape an abusive husband. The story is more about Charlene coming into her own and finding the strength to overcome her past than the developing relationship between her and Ryker. Those parts, particularly at the end, feel rushed.

Overall, the book was enjoyable, but even for a novella, I wished there was a little more story to this one.

I really enjoyed this story, Ryker is a black bear shifter and Charlene is running from an abusive soon to be ex husband, Ryker is also in the special ops, I like how this story is playing out they both feel the mutual attraction, yet Ryker is being cautious because he knows Charlene is still dealing with issues, this does end in a cliffhanger but soo worth the read!! Looking forward to part 2

Her hero, her bear! Charlene is running away from her abusive, soon to be ex-husband. She has sprained her ankle and is trying to figure out how to get to the cabin, when Ryker trips over her. When Charlene invites Ryker to dinner, she is in for a surprise, her ex has found her. When Ryker confronts the man she gets an even bigger surprise. Fantastic book, loved the characters and look forward to the next book!
