Had to DNF this. I may pick it up later but I just couldn’t connect with the characters

Deep End is the sequel to Full Court Press
Carolyn is forty one. She used to be arm candy to an executive in a high earning position. She has a nineteen year old son.
She has been ignored and taken for granted for quite a few years. She’s unappreciated as she does all the thankless chores to keep the family happy.
Mark is a conceited, thankless, arrogant, asshole. To say that he takes her for granted is a huge understatement
When her son comes home from school, he brings a friend along for Thanksgiving. His friend is Carter. A seven foot basketball player.
Carter does something nobody else thinks about…..He notices Carolyn. For the entire weekend, Carter is never over a few feet away from her.
They accidently run into each other in the kitchen at night, getting a drink of water. Carter is wearing a pair of basketball shorts with no underwear. They stumble into one another in the dark and Carolyn notices,….
Carter must have at least ten inches,…..flaccid.
The next day, The ‘boys’, Mark and her son, spend the day on the golf course. Carter stays home with Carolyn. By this time, she’s at least a little afraid of him. Nobody looks at her like he’s looking. She is apprehensive, Turned on,.. wet, and afraid.
She is making the beds that Sunday morning when the boys leave,… Carter catches up to her in the bedroom. He's not flaccid,.. and he's much longer than ten inches. He's not there to look,...and he doesn’t ask,.. he ‘Takes her,.. over,.. and over,.. and over,. Then he flips her on her stomach and repeats it.
He is a machine,.. he never tires. He continues for hours,…and he’s still inside her when the front door opens as the boys return.
The readers are spared the chaos of Mark catching them.
The second episode,..
In Deep End,..
Carolyn is in a truly miserable existence.
Mark, is no longer ignoring her,. He’s set out to punish and make her life a living hell. She is forced to service him twice a day. Morning and evening. She is nothing more than a Indentured servant. A set of fuck-holes with a mouth. The abuse is non-stop.
She had more self respect when he ignored her.
The neighbor, next door, is a widower. His wife of thirty years passed away in the spring. Mr Roberts. He caught her at the mailbox and asked her if she could help clean out his wife’s closet.
Ms Pike’s empathy as Carolyn helps him determine what to do with this lady’s personal items, is heart rending.
As she’s there, she discovers that Mr Roberts had an in-ground pool installed for his wife. His wife loved to swim. Mr Robert's back yard isn’t visible from Carolyn’s yard. Mr Roberts extends an invitation for her to come over and enjoy it.
They have a warm spell in the spring and Mr Roberts removes the tarp, cleans it and preps it for use. He then invites her again. She takes him up on his offer. It would be rude to refuse. Her suit is a one piece with a skirt,.. strictly for ‘mom’s.
They build a friendship as she visits.
He asks her to wear a bikini…(for an old man). He actually SEES her, for what she is. A beautiful, forty one year old woman, stretch marks, her struggle with gravity, but still a very sexy woman,.. (he sees exactly what Carter, and the reader sees).
To not respect his flattery would be an insult. So she buys a bikini,.
Ms Pike outdoes herself.
Carolyn’s pain, her forced humiliation, the destruction of her self respect, her need to escape…
It all comes thru,.. even the empathy as they clean out the closet.
This Lady,... Carolyn,. ..She’s not perfect.
She's a wife and a mother, and she's built her life around creating a family.
She was ignored for years,.. then she fell victim to a much needed seduction. A one-off.
Now,...She needs escape,.. self respect, sex, and someone to care.
I'm not going to spoil what happens next.
Ms Pike has given us a beautiful character study.
The heat is awesome and I hope there’s more about this lady in the future.
