The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan, a classic of English literature published in 1678, has subsequently been printed in over 200 hundred languages. Hence its distribution has been second only to that of the English Bible. Barry Horner, a recognized authority on Bunyan and his writings, within the context of seventeenth century England, here provides his Accurate Revised Text of this incomparable biblical allegory. His faithful rendering, incorporating thirty-six chapters, is designed to be a careful yet appealing contemporary revision supported by additional Bible references and colorized, classic illustrations. Horner draws upon the definitive text of The Pilgrim's Progress edited by J. B. Warey and Roger Sharrock, published by Oxford Press (Clarendon) in 1960. Of foremost consideration has been a style of simple, conversational English that, while not being racy, yet maintains faithfulness to the style, meaning, doctrine, and purposes of John Bunyan. A select variety of archaisms has been retained, with modern equivalent terms in brackets, since these expressions have gained a certain timeless quality and quaintness about them that are intrinsic to the whole narrative. Antiquated modes of sentence construction have been modified to produce more up-to-date styles of expression. An especial desire of Horner has been that the text might be faithful to the Bedford tinker’s expressed purpose, namely that the reader perceive the intended substance of Bible truth, and especially the gospel, that lies beyond the veil of allegorical style. Full background details concerning The Pilgrim’s Progress, biblical, theological, historical and social, are contained in two separate volumes by this editor titled An Outlined Commentary on The Pilgrim’s Progress (600+ pp), and The Pilgrim’s Progress: Themes and Issues (500+ pp), they being a product of Horner's doctoral studies. Both volumes will subsequently be published in eBook formats. Also refer to www.bunyanministries.org.
Can you believe I've never read this book? I've read picture books and children's versions and seen movie versions, but never actually read the original. I think I was worried that it would be in KJV English and therefore slow to read, but that was not the case, esp. since Dr. Horner helpfully included definitions of antiquated words in parentheses. A must read for every believer!
This story was a beautifully written allegory of the Christian life! I found it inspiring and thought-provoking. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a deep story to affirm faith! 3 stars! Happy reading! ✧・゚:* *:・゚✧
