It seems I have a longing that can’t be satisfied by reality. Immersing myself in literature allows me to escape into worlds where I could become someone graceful, witty, and popular.
I obtained a master’s degree in Christian Studies from Logos Theological Seminary, a PhD in biochemistry from Ohio State University, and an MBA. in finance and management from the University of Illinois.
Currently, I work for a small biotech company and have published 120+ scientific books and papers.

I dropped into this book with the same chaotic energy I get when I decide to “just check” a weird noise in the house — brave, stupid, and already preparing to fight a ghost or a possum.
Travis Young is an astrophysicist doing normal astrophysicist things — you know, casually poking at hypothetical space‑time windows from a lunar station — when something dense yeets itself straight into the Sun.
Not grazes it.
Not politely taps it.
Plunges. Into. The. Sun.
Me: “Oh fantastic, the star is having a medical emergency.”
Back on Earth, the Assembly immediately goes into “deny everything, silence everyone, pretend the Sun is fine” mode. Intelligence Officer Lucas Sato is the poster boy for “I will ruin your life to protect my agenda,” and he wants Travis quiet. Permanently quiet.
Travis refuses, because he has the emotional stability of a scientist who’s seen too much. His access gets cut, his technician vanishes into a government facility, and suddenly he’s running around Earth like a man who’s lost his keys, his job, and possibly the future of humanity.
Enter Laura Rhode — childhood confidante, biochemist, stubborn, brilliant, and rocking a level of faith that makes Travis twitch. He loves her. He’s annoyed by her. He’s terrified she’s right about things he doesn’t want to think about.
Their dynamic is:
him: “science says no”
her: “God says maybe”
me: “oh fantastic, we’re in the ‘existential crisis meets romance’ phase”
Meanwhile, Sato is convinced the space‑time window could open a bridge to an unseen realm — one where he might reach his deceased wife. So now we’ve got grief‑driven espionage, cosmic danger, and a man willing to break the universe for love.
Travis gets driven underground, teaming up with Flood — an exile district — and St. Jude’s, a faith community holding a fragile truce between rival powers. It’s political tension, spiritual tension, scientific tension… basically every flavour of tension except sexual.

It’s ambitious, thoughtful, and packed with ideas — but sometimes the pacing wobbles, the threads tangle, or the emotional beats need a little more punch. Still, the worldbuilding is intriguing, the stakes are high, and the blend of science and faith gives it a unique flavour.
A 3 to 3.5‑star read — smart, layered, atmospheric, occasionally uneven, but absolutely interesting enough to keep you turning pages while muttering “the Sun needs therapy.”

This was an interesting premise for the story, and I did enjoy the sci-fi elements. Unfortunately, this story was not for me. I would have liked more detail about the world Travis lived in, as that was honestly so interesting when it was focused on, but I felt like some of the details were given without any real explanation or context, so I sometimes felt a little lost. I admit this could just have been me; I am on some pretty strong tablets at the moment, so some things could have been lost on me, but I did want to linger more on the world-building as it was honestly so cool.
The spiritual elements were honestly a little lost on me, which is why I don’t think I am the right audience for this book. I am always up for exploring moral dilemmas brought about by the advent of technology and AI becoming commonplace, especially when it comes to what AI is, and how we compare it to true consciousness and the right to consent. However, I do not feel that was the point that Whong was making in this book, or where the focus of the moral dilemmas lay. A lot of the issues brought up felt very much like the issues that are explored in churches today, and I just didn’t really engage with it.
I did think the relationship between Laura and Travis was sweet; however, I felt that as the book went on and the focus became more spiritual, the way they interacted felt less natural. I think I would have liked to have seen a more human side to Laura and had them both talk more deeply about their feelings.
I think that this would work for anyone who is looking for a good sci-fi to read with deeply spiritual and Christian messages. This is quite a nuanced genre, as I don’t think it's often that sci-fi books incorporate overtly Christian messages, so I definitely think this will appeal to Christian audiences who were maybe looking for a sci-fi book to read that represents their beliefs and worldview.

Eclipsed System is a thought-provoking science fiction novel that blends futuristic galactic catastrophe with themes of spiritual reckoning, personal growth, and human connection. The futuristic setting spans, primarily, two vastly different communities and introduces in-depth scientific concepts, creating a backdrop that feels expansive, even if I occasionally wished for more grounding details early on to better visualize the environment (Atmosphere 8/10). The characters were equally varied, resulting in varying levels of connection for me. I found the MMC, Travis, intriguing and complex as he explored certain relationship dynamics, while other supporting characters felt as though they had more story left to tell, such as Valve Mother, Ori, and Brian (Character 7/10).
The writing is clear overall, though the heavier scientific and technical discussions occasionally overshadowed the plot and pacing for me (Writing 6/10). The plot combines large-scale events with spiritual exploration and reflection, creating a story with a gripping internal and external journey. At times, I found myself wishing certain aspects had been more thoroughly explored (Plot 7/10). Even so, the novel contains several memorable ideas and passages that stayed with me after reading, prompting personal reflection beyond the final page (Intrigue 7/10).
While some more technical concepts may be challenging for readers without a strong science background, the author’s knowledge and passion for the subject are evident throughout (Logic 6/10). Travis Young is a man on the moon, an astrophysicist who is studying the effects of the sun and celestial alignments on the creation of windows in time and space, it was going very well until one day when something hits the Sun, damaging the base he was working from and causing all the instruments to give out unusual readings, not to mention the damage to the moon station and the people working there.
When he is sent back to Earth to report on the situation, he finds that nobody in the governing body of the Assembly wants to listen, or at least, they don't want others to and so he is stopped from speaking by one of their Intelligence Officers Lucas Sato, he is also frozen out of everything he has worked for and so has to turn to a past friend to help him, a woman he has loved for a long time, but never told, Laura, a biochemist who has also noticed strange readings since that day.
Will Travis and his group be able to gather all the data and prove his theory before the Assembly proves theirs and what will become of himself and Laura, with her strong faith and beliefs? This is a not so distant dystopian sci-fi with plenty of action throughout as two different groups work to control the future while one man also has a crisis of faith and self, a read which will pull you in and through to the end.
As the two work to collect data, Travis has to go underground to the Flood to stop the Assembly moving him to a secure facility for a fellowship, like they have done to his coworker, but they don't stop there, as Travis works to prove his theory that the Sun is becoming an immediate danger to Earth, the Assembly is working on a different one with just as terrible consequences.

*Eclipsed System* drew me into a captivating science fiction adventure filled with mystery, danger, and the vast possibilities of space exploration. R. F. Whong creates a story that combines imaginative world-building with compelling characters, making it easy to become invested in the journey from the very beginning.
I enjoyed the sense of discovery throughout the novel. The challenges the characters face feel meaningful, and the story does a wonderful job of exploring not only the unknown reaches of space but also the personal struggles, choices, and relationships that shape the people on that journey.
One of the things that stood out to me was the balance between action and deeper themes. The book explores ideas of survival, identity, trust, and humanity’s place in the universe while still delivering the excitement and tension expected from a science fiction adventure. The unfolding mysteries kept me curious, and I found myself wanting to uncover the secrets alongside the characters.

So it’s been a ridiculous amount of years since I have read anything Christian, let alone Christian Sci-Fi, but the premise sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a whirl. I was not disappointed at all! I will also be looking to see what other works the author has done as I am very curious to see what else she has written. I really loved the characters in the novel, Travis trying to figure out what is going on with the sun, while also realizing that he can’t trust everyone and the consequences of trusting the wrong person could lead to serious consequences, not only for him, but humanity. I found the story drawing me, despite my initial hesitation and it struck a delicate balance between the science piece and the religion piece and how different characters react based on their beliefs. I enjoyed the science pieces of the story, but it was the relationships that kept me turning the pages, how were they going to respond and deal with what is happening and is it something deadly and dangerous, or could it be something more unexplained? If you are interested in sci-fi, I would absolutely recommend the book, and if you prefer to read Christian novels, this is one you should check out!

I went into it expecting a science-fiction story about space and the unknown, but it turned out to be so much more than that.
I really liked Travis as a character. He's trying to understand what is happening to the Sun while also trying to figure out who he can actually trust, and watching him get pushed further and further outside the system kept me hooked. I also really loved the relationship between Travis and Laura. Their different views on faith made their relationship so much more interesting, especially because Travis is trying to understand things through science while Laura sees them through faith.
The whole idea of something entering the Sun and potentially threatening Earth's future was fascinating, but what really made this book stand out to me was the bigger questions underneath the science. Truth, faith, redemption, sacrifice, and what people are willing to do when they're desperate for answers all play such a huge part in the story.
I also loved that the book made me think. It's not just "cool space stuff" (although there is plenty of that 😅). It actually made me stop and think about humanity, what we believe, and how far people will go when they're afraid of losing the people they love.
This was such a unique combination of science fiction and faith, and I can absolutely see why it received the Christian Book Excellence Award. If you like sci-fi that gives you something to think about long after you've finished reading, I definitely recommend this one. 🌎☀️🚀📖

This was a really interesting sci-fi story. It had everything elements of danger, government coverups, end of the world feeling and an element of romance. It makes the reads thing about things such as loneliness, lack of humanity, sacrifice and so much more.
Travis Young is an astrophysicist when he is investigating a space time window he witnessed something collide and plunge straight into the sun.
Knowing this could have a catastrophic impact on Earth Travis knows he needs to make people away.
However the Assembly on earth don’t want people know the truth and they will stop at nothing to keep Travis quiet. Now it is a race against time to bring what happened to the attention of everyone before the Assembly gets to shut him down and before the earth suffers the consequences of the sun being damaged.
Add to this story the love story between Travis and Laura and it adds another element to this story. Will Laura finally realise that Travis is in love with her and is she in love with him?
There are so many elements to this story that it was a gripping page turner that I couldn’t put down

Eclipsed System is a science fiction thriller with a strong religious angle. This intrigued me and it is a captivating and thought- provoking book.
The scientific side of the story draws on a variety of disciplines including astrophysics and botany. I really liked how Laura could interpret the changes in the sun through the changes in plant behaviour!
I did find it a little bit off-putting that the book begins with quite a long glossary of world-building terms, a mixture of established scientific terms and ones created or adapted for the story. In the end most things made enough sense in context that I wasn't always having to refer back to it most of the time but it still felt a bit daunting going into the story via a dictionary.
Eclipsed System gets four stars from me! I'd recommend it to sci-fi fans who are Christian or interested in stories that explore religion in speculative contexts.

This story is by an author that is new for me. A scientific story that has a romance aspect to it. A story about human nature and redemption. A time space story where something crashes into the Sun. Back on Earth the truth is covered up and silenced. Travis knows the truth doesn’t want to stay silent. But when his access to things disappear, he turns to his friend Laura. As the story evolves Travis realizes that Earth is in trouble. Laura and Travis’s relationship also grows but it remains to be seen if Laura feels the same way about Travis. What will happen to Earth and its future? The characters in this story are relatable and engaging. They are creative and well developed. There is great growth of the characters and the plot throughout which makes the story easy to read. This is a good story and I recommend reading it.

This book was a pleasant surprise for me. There were so many aspects of this book that intrigued me from the way a possible future could be as well as consequences of damaging our sun. I had never heard of christian scifi but i must say, it is nice to read something that make me come along on the journey. With all the changes in technology and governing systems, humans continue to search for answers. We are by nature very curious creatures, always searching for more, answers to the hard questions, and even with technology we seem to reject what we do not understand. Even with the science and doubts it is nice to read something that leads us all to question things and discover that there is decent humanity that is worth fighting for. I would really recommend this book to my church scifi nerds. Good read!

This book was an interesting balance between science and faith. One character scientifically inclined to find the answers and save humanity where as the other character is religious and believes in faith and redemption.
Travis Young is an astrophysicist, when he is investigating a space time window, he accidentally finds something plunging into the sun. Travis thinks this might cause a huge impact to Earth and tries to warn the authorities. But the Assembly has a different opinion and they in turn try to shut Travis down. Travis develops a friendship with Laura who has a more spiritual viewpoint, but will Travis be able to save Earth?
This was an interesting book; there is a lot of science and technology in there but in the end, it is the relationships and humanity which wins. That was so heartwarming to read.

This is a fascinating novel not because of futuristic portrayal of the universe and the consequence of damaging the Sun, but because of in-depth exploration of human nature and relationships. The topics such as self-esteem, respect, jealousy, sin, love etc. indeed transcend cultures and languages, and in this case time. Regardless of the changes in technology and governing systems, humans continue to search for answers regarding humanity. The setting may be some time in the future, readers are led to think decent humanity is still worth to maintain.
I almost didn't read this novel, but decided to give it a chance, I am always up to reading something new and this is the first novel I have read from this author. Definitely gives you some food for thought when you read this novel. I am glad I gave this book a chance.

Eclipsed System by R.F. Whong is an imaginative story that has woven sci-fi with layered planetary politics, inventive technology, Christian themes/values, and thought-provoking ideas about humanity, loneliness, intimacy, hope, sacrifice, and redemption.
The character/s have intriguing traits and motivations, but unfortunately I just didn’t connect with them and therefore wasn’t fully invested in them or the outcome of the story this time around. I can’t really pinpoint why, just that I didn’t find my groove here, and I normally love sci-fi … so I have decided to revisit this one in a few weeks to see if I still feel the same way, or instead, I may discover that I was just having an ‘off’ reading day this time around.

This story was very thought-provoking; it had me pondering life and what matters most to me. This book combines science fiction and the questions of faith and humanity. The future of the world is at risk due to a mysterious impact hitting the sun. The people in power try to cover it up when people start disappearing; Travis and his friend Laura must go underground to protect themselves from those trying to quiet them.
I liked that the beginning of the story included explanations of words that might not be commonly understood, which served as a quick reference throughout my reading experience. I wish more authors would consider doing this, because the storyline was more interesting when I understood what I was reading.

This was a really interesting sci-fi novel that took me a little by surprise when I started reading it. I almost didn’t give this book a go, the description not having grabbed my attention. However, something prompted me to read the first couple of chapters and I am glad I did. The story had much more depth to it than I was expecting and the author had created a world that was great to read about.
I really enjoyed the characters too. And not just the main characters but the secondary ones also. They all fed in nicely to the story that had been created and added to the overall experience of reading. This was a great story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Eclipsed System is an engaging sci-fi thriller that kept me hooked with its mix of space mystery, suspense, and thought-provoking themes. The idea of a wounded Sun and the ripple effects it has on humanity is incredibly creative, and the story balances scientific concepts with personal relationships and questions of faith in an interesting way. I really enjoyed following Travis as he navigated both the larger crisis and his own personal struggles, and the fast-paced plot kept the pages turning. Some of the ideas are ambitious, but they come together in a satisfying and memorable story. A great read for anyone who enjoys science fiction with plenty of heart and depth.

I was hooked from the start. The opening sequence of events that shows the reader the beginning of the issues with the Sun is so well written you can put yourself beside the scientists who are fighting for their lives. Then we follow Travis as he tries to save humanity but is thwarted by his government at every turn. I loved how God was given the glory as creator throughout the whole book. The story really touches on sin in a way that id logical and understandable. Plus the slow burn romance between Travis and laura is so good! This was a great read and a perfect example of amazing Christian Sci-fi.

Boy what a surprise I literally went past this book four times before it really caught my attention and I took a chance on this new to me author. There’s a lot going on and I dove right in. I've not read a sci-fi, Christian thriller before and I was surprised with how well this was written and captured my attention. I picked this book up based on cover alone and went in blind.
While not a genre I pick often I was thrown into this story and all that happens between the pages.
I was scared by the glossary at the start but while appreciated it wasnt totally needed but it did make it a little scary to start not knowing how often if at all I would need to flip back to figure out what something meant(wasn't often for me as there were context clues for me to get gist without pulling me out of my reading groove)

Eclipsed System by R. F. Whong. While sci-fi is not my favorite genre with this one being a Christian sci-fi I was intrigued. Its the story of Travis who is a astrophysicist who does normal astrophysicist stuff when he sees something fly directly into the sun. The only problem is the people back on Earth want Travis to remain quiet because they don't want this new out. So when Travis tells them no, he's not going to be quiet then they cut off all his access which is kinda important when you are in a lunar station. Then Laura enters the story and she is biochemist who believes in science but she also believes in God and thinks He can do things no scientist can. Travis loves Laura but he also hates her sometimes. When Travis gets sent underground he teams up with the Flood district & St. Jude's, a faith community. Travis is torn between science, romance and spirituality. Such a different read but I really enjoyed it.

Eclipsed System by R.F. Whong isn't my typical kind of read, but I'm really glad I decided to take a chance on it! I really enjoyed getting pulled into this world and figuring everything out right alongside the characters. There was plenty of action and suspense to keep me turning the pages, and I loved never quite knowing what was coming next. It definitely had me saying, “Okay, just one more chapter…” more than once. Sometimes stepping outside your usual genre pays off, and this was definitely one of those times!

This Author has extensive knowledge of world-building terms that they share at the beginning, this knowledge is clear throughout the book and really makes for an interesting read outside of the main story.
The Author has created a great dystopian type of story, with a touch of faith. A main character battling inner turmoil of his own existence and how his life has, or hasn’t, impacted those around him as well as his fight to help save humanity.
I really enjoyed this book, it is a very thought-provoking and engaging story!

Who can you trust? Who would have thought you could mix science and religion and get such a nice read. Travis is trying to find out what is wrong with the sun from a scientific standpoint, Laura relies on her faith in God. You wouldn’t think they would work, but they do, and it was so intriguing to watch their relationship grow, while trying to hide from the Assembly. I could never imagine the earth not being habitable. My faith is strong and this book really has me interested in the science within the universe.

The pacing was occasionally uneven, yet I appreciated the creativity of the plot, the strength of the characters, and the way the author skillfully blended theology with modern sci-fi, creating a story enriched with touches of romance.

A story of human nature in a Sci Fi universe with a hint of romance thrown in. This is a the first book I have read from this author and really found the premise and storyline fascinating. I found myself quickly setting down and buckling in to find out where this story would take me. A very interesting read and enjoyable. The author does a great job drawing the reader in and keeping them engaged.

A gripping read that sits perfectly balanced between the realms of Science Fiction and Dystopia. The narrative follows Travis as he witnesses the collapse of the solar system as we know it and the apocalyptic life that follows. The book also begins with an interesting index that helpfully delves, in detail, into the more technical and scientific things mentioned during the story! Definitely a unique read!

First time reader of R.F. Whong and while I have read several sci-fi thrillers this was my first Christian sci-fi thriller. It took me a little bit to fully get into the story but once I did, I was fully invested. The combination of adventure, thriller, and thought-provoking moments combined with a touch of romance built a wonderful story from beginning to end. I look forward to my next read by this author.

I had a hard time really connecting with this book, as it’s not my normal genre. However, it was a very interesting read. It took me a while to get past the technical jargon, but once past it the story took hold and wouldn’t let go. Science vs God made for a really interesting concept. And the love story was excellent. The characters were amazing. Not one I’d put on my reread pile, but it definitely is a good book.
