Transferring in your junior year of college isn’t always ideal. For me, it was a deal I had to make with my overprotective dad and brothers to be closer to them. Thankfully, my cousin, who is more like a sister to me, is coming with me. On the first day of school, the last person I expect to meet and befriend is the campus god, Caleb Judge. Quarterback for the Tigers and future NFL draft pick. He’s tall, dark and handsome. He also has a playboy reputation that rivals my brothers (gross). The last thing I expect is for him to be interested in me. Boys were never interested in me, maybe due to my family, but Caleb doesn’t know that I come from football royalty, it’s a fact I like to keep to myself as long as possible. Caleb becomes relentless in his pursuit of me, but there’s something in the shadows always pulling him away and I'm beginning to wonder what he's hiding from me and what his true intentions are.
Caleb
I’m the campus golden boy and regular playboy. I’m not being cocky, it’s a fact. Texas small towns live and breathe football, and Canton is no different. This year, I’m the starting quarterback and there is already talk about me being drafted to the NFL when I graduate. Football and my mom are everything to me, well, and my best friend Carter. This year, I can’t afford distractions, I want to go all the way and for that to happen I need to be fully locked in. Enter, Nya Kingston. The day I meet her and my eyes lock with hers, she knocks me on my ass and flips my entire world on its axis. Suddenly, my playboy ways and motto of one and done aren’t appealing to me. With her I want more, I want it all. She’s the ultimate distraction, one I can’t stay away from, but there’s other people at play, doing their damndest to rip us apart and I’m not letting that happen. She’s mine and I’ll prove it to her and anyone else who gets in my way.
I think I need a new shelf - H too stupid to live because he was A good first book - def needs editing, and maybe a smidge too OTT drama but I didn’t hate it
3.5 Stars. This book is a complete hot mess express. But I kinda loved it?! 🤷♀️Don’t read this expecting literary genius or insight. You can tell it’s straight from WP, and in serious need of editing. I went in for the OW drama and it did not disappoint in that regard!
Spoilery thoughts…
MMC is a college football god. He’s absolutely struck love-dumb on seeing the FMC for the first time. FMC is gorgeous, smart, and her family is football royalty. I appreciated that the FMC was described as practically a goddess. Purple/grey eyes and all. 🙄 This girl has options. Every man wants her. So often in this genre the FMC is the ‘overlooked’ girl. This MMC knew he had to up his game to get her. That was fun.
The characters (ESPECIALLY the MMC) seem to be children cosplaying as adults. It’s college, so that checks. College kids are often inherently dumb, immature, and still figuring it out. (No offense youngins! We’ve all been there!) The MMC’s dumb decisions were somewhat realistic for a 21’ish-year-olds mindset, who has never been in a real relationship.
MMC has a FMC bff (oh boy.. here we go). He’s been screwing her off and on for three years. 😱 There is no actual relationship, and he’s been clear on wanting to just be friends. Well… bff has vastly different opinions on that situation, and she turns into a full out bunny boiler after he gets into a relationship with FMC. It was hilariously awesome for angst readers. She was a complete psycho.
Anyway, lots of shenanigans ensue. Lots of angst before a HEA.
I enjoyed this one and it satisfied my OW drama craving. 😎
This is a debut novel and for a first book it was a really good read. It follows the story of Nya and Caleb. Caleb is on the college football team and the stand our star. He is your typical jock enjoying all the benefits that go with it right up until he meets Nya who has just transferred to his college. From the moment he meets her he is all in and convinced Nya is his entire future. This does not sit well with Caleb's best friend from home who also happens to be his friend with benefits up until recently. Nya hails from a famous family and is trying to get away from her over protective brothers and make a life of her own along with her cousin Jasmine (who I believe is getting her own story).
It's abundantly clear from the very start of the book that Caleb has zero interest in his best friend but she thinks they are destined to be together. Caleb is too stupid to listen and lets the bestie manipulate him multiple times where he messes up pretty badly and it always ends up with Nya getting hurt. He needs to do some serious grovelling and it's clear he only wants Nya but he really is just a bit of an idiot. None of it is deliberate, he just doesn't think and does not listen to others!
I really enjoyed this book and will 100% be reading more from this author. It is a debut novel so there are a couple of inconsistencies and plot points I might have liked to see updated but they don't detract from the story too much.
So a few things. First off the reviewers that say it needs some editing are correct. There is definitely some issues with punctuation or the wrong word with put in there, etc. You had to use some context clues to figure a little bit of it out, but overall, it didn’t distract from the story really. One of the writing issues that I would say that did detract from the story worth the run-on paragraphs. You really do not need a paragraph that is 2 1/2 pages long. Even if it’s the same thought that they’re expanding on you can just cut it down. However, I really did feel his apology and his regret and once he was all in you really never felt like he wasn’t so I believed in the relationship and the forgiveness overall, I really did enjoy the book. It would have been better with lots of editing, but otherwise a solid read.
This book would have been much more entertaining and readable with an editor. There were walls of text in desperate need of punctuation. I liked the dialogue and characters were likeable, if not too predictable. And its obvious the writer did research on US college football but not on US college life. Still, because I finished it and was entertained, I'll give three and a half stars, rounded down to three
I have to say I enjoyed the storyline. The female lead was strong in her convictions and I understand why she gave him chance after chance. For me the only annoying part was the repetitive acknowledgment of how gorgeous she was. How stunning, breathtaking etc etc. even for her cousin and her mom and aunt. There was way too much emphasis on that alone. I got it after the first ten times it was mentioned.
Plot was typical clueless college jock, at least the FMC was strong. OW drama was great until it went OTT 🤪. Questionable as to age of this ‘author’ AP classes are not college courses. SERIOUS need of editing…lack of punctuation, oddly placed punctuation, many misspelled words. And ummm somehow Thanksgiving came before Halloween 🤷🏻♀️. Who knew 🤭 Skimmed towards the end. Left with some loose ends.
The story was good, juvenile, but I have a feeling it came directly from Wattpad and had no editor or someone to go over formatting. The characters definitely seem to be 18-20 by the way the writer made their active voice sound. The grammar and writing errors did throw me off in some areas that I just ended up scanning the last 20%.
For my OW drama loving readers—this was a good time! The drama is throughout the entire book, but I promise the evil skank gets what she deserves in the end. There are quite a lot of misspellings, but not enough to ruin it for me. If you’re looking for a rage read with a like-able MMC who happens to be TDTL for most of the book this is for you.
Absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down. Caleb and Nya have such great chemistry and reading about their journey, through ups and downs, had me hooked. I just hope some of the other characters get a book of their own and it turns into a series. I'm not ready to leave their world behind.
This book went on way longer than it needed to. A lot of the drama was repetitive and the same goes with the MMC stupidity. He’s a clueless idiot. I’m not a fan of any of the characters. Storyline was too over the top for me, it felt like the book just dragged on with Caleb’s obsession and being a dumbass, Nya worrying about OW drama. The good days only seem to “pass by in a blur”. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Ok yes, this story needs editing. But I liked it. Lots of drama, an angel FMC and lots of grovel. I liked all of the characters. I don't really know anything about American football but I still really enjoyed this.
I really enjoyed this book. The story flowed nicely, the characters were age appropriate. The ow was doing what they do. There were a few grammar mistakes but not enough to take away the story line. Very good book and I can’t wait for Cater and Jas.
Why does it feel as if I'm reading a fanfic that has a lot of unnessary drama. I won't be surprised if this is originally from wattpad with how bad the writing it. As much as I love OW drama, the mmc is too dumb for my liking.
