Growing up during the zombie apocalypse I think God took all the good people away. If there is a God. I'm not so sure anymore. Wait, will I go to hell for thinking that way? -- Decay of Innocence
When the Dead walk the Earth, the REAL demons emerge... -- Death of Innocence
First, I need to point out that these books were originally published as 6 separate graphic novels, Kellie's Diary #1-6. Then they were published as two compilations. Kellie's Diary - Decay of Innocence (Kellie's Diary #1-3) and Kellie's Diary - Death of Innocence (Kellie's Diary #4-6). I was confused about this and ended up buying Kellie's Diary #2 after reading Decay of Innocence. When I started reading, I was like, wait I already read this.. I eventually figured it out. Looking back, I don't know what confused me so much.
Decay of Innocence starts off in January of 1993. At the start of the book, Kellie is 9-years old and she is living a fairly normal life. Gradually, we hear that more and more people are getting sick. By Chapter 5, we realize that something is terribly wrong. Kellie is stuck by herself at school and trying to escape the zombies.
Kellie is very smart and resourceful, even though she doesn't seem to know anything about zombies. Her first goal is to get to her house. Once there, when she doesn't find her family, her goal is to get to Oregon (to where her grandfather lives). She is hoping to find someone from her family alive.
Throughout the series, Kellie is very strong and does what she needs to in order to survive. She protects those she loves and tries to protect herself as well. She meets many people along the way, some good and some bad. And it seems like the zombies are not the worst thing left in this scary world.
I enjoyed this series very much. I started reading the Decay of Innocence during the Readathon last Saturday and when I finished, I immediately bought Death of Innocence and kept going. It was hard to read about the abuse Kellie suffered. No child should be forced to deal with such evil. It was interesting to read about the zombie apocalypse from a child's point of view (a child who manages to survive on her own for quite a while).
Recommended to: Fans of graphic novels and apocalyptic stories. This is definitely an adult book. There is a lot of graphic violence including child abuse and sexual abuse.
This is the omnibus edition of the serial. It includes parts 4 to 6.
Several years have passed since part 3. Kellie and her younger sister have been captured by a group of slavers. They addict Kellie to drugs, force her into prostitution, and often physically abuse her . After her eventual rescue, she makes her mission to track down the leader of the slavers and to get her sister back.
The serial became extremely dark. The whole time on the train with the not so subtle foreshadowing of troubles to come was dropped in favor of this new, extremely darker story. It also relies on the cliche zombie tropes. The army of psycopaths that manage to arm themselves and set up a compound where the strongest rule and women are treated as disposable property. The massive group of zombies that appears with no warnings to wipe out a group and then disappear with hardly any traces. The possible cure and the safe haven that is always hinted at are even thrown into the mix.
It also has some bad science. They are still driving trucks after society collapsed 10 years ago. Gasoline breaks down and becomes unusable after a couple of years. They are still relying on scavenged items including food and weapons (and yet the bad guys always have plenty of ammo). Let's face it. After 10 years, the zombie population should be declining. The humans that are left have learned to fight back. They always seem to manage to kill several zombies for every human killed. Also, The zombies are supposed to be eating the people. If someone is eaten, there won't be a zombie. There is only a zombie if someone is only bitten of partially eaten (and the brian/spinal cord isn't destroyed). In fact, this point is always ignored in zombie stories.
This serial has become too dark and full of zombie cliches for me to continue. I would only recommend this to hardcore zombie fans that just can't get enough of them.
After mowing threw the first volume, even though I had trouble with it keeping my attention, I hoped the this volume would be a bit better. It's much darker than the first book. And like the first book I felt like there were huge lapses in Kellie's diary entries leaving me feeling lost. This book is 99% her dealing with sexual abuse and 1% zombies. I was looking for more of a zombie novel from a child's point of view instead of a sad and dark tale of sex trafficking. Not to say it's a bad book, it just didn't do it for me. They mystery of Lydia and her fate is what kept me reading. Lydia's death was a huge let down for me at the end of this book. I would have liked a bit more details as to why she was so mutilated and more about Victor. It just feels like a lot of loose ends and as I said before it's very dark and sad. This is not a happy ending book. I won't read the next volume mainly because I don't care to read about sexual child abuse
This was much darker than I was expecting. For something so short, it really paints a picture. I would warn anyone reading this installment that it's less about zombie survival and more about how horrible people are when there are no laws to follow. Can this girl possibly go through anymore? I only hope they eventually finish the series so I can get some closure.
