5 'Hush' stars!
I am a reader who loves dark books. I love story lines that you aren’t supposed to love… the messed up ones. The books where you can’t tell if the hero has any good at all, but they eventually win you over. Books that make your heart beat fast and keep you on edge while reading. Where there are twists and turns at every corner. This book had all that and more.
If you’ve read Slack or the Dirty Dark and Deadly series, you’ve heard Merc’s name mentioned. You may have caught a glimpse of him here or there, but you don’t know the real Merric Case. Let me introduce you…
Merc made a choice eight years ago. He had a job to do, orders to follow. Things didn’t quite go according to plan. Now he’s back to fix what he needs to fix. For that, he needs Sydney. He needs in her head. To figure out what secrets she holds. And Merric Case will do whatever necessary to get the information he needs. Anything. He’s not above using any means necessary to break Sydney.
Merc is one of those characters that you love to hate and hate to love. I was very conflicted about my feelings for him in the first half of the book… if you love him that first 50% or so, there might be something wrong with you. I don’t think Merc is the most likable character. But the more I understood him, the more I saw him come out of that violent and messed up haze and see the more of him, I did start to fall for him. I always think it’s more satisfying to end up loving a hero that starts out as the bad guy. It’s a challenge. Merc is damaged, he’s rough around the edges and his heart is hard. But a few things can soften him.
Sydney… what can I even say about her? She might seem a little on the weak side, or compliant at times, but don’t let that fool you. She is strong. She is determined. And how everything came full circle with her character… I didn’t see that coming at all.
J.A. Huss is able to weave together a story line like no other author. By the end of the book, everything comes together and fits in a way you didn’t think was even possible. It seems like after every book of hers I read I’m left wondering how she does it. This one really impressed me. The writing, as always was great, and the story captivated me from the start. It’s a book you won’t want to put down once you start. It’s smart, sexy and mysterious. It’s dark in the best kind of way.
Meet Me in the Dark is not a traditional romance and it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s violent, gritty, dark and if you’re sensitive to these types of reads, I wouldn’t recommend it to you. However, if you’re like me and love a dark and suspenseful romance with a strong heroine and a hero you love to hate and hate to love, this is one I would highly recommend.
This book is a STAND-ALONE. You shortly meet Merc in one of the other books, and JA’s ‘Come’ series does introduce some of the players in this story, but you won’t be confused if you read this without that background. This is first and foremost Merc and Sydney’s story- so you shouldn't be lost just jumping into this.

Merc is the mysterous friend of Ford’s that we met in Slack, he was the skilled killer that resurfaced in the Dirty, Dark & Deadly series that lent his skills to Harper, James and Sasha. Now it’s time for his story to be told.
Merric Case, better known to the #fans of JA Huss as Merc made a choice eight years ago. He was there for a job. He had his orders and he didn’t follow them. But now he’s back. The Company might have destroyed from the top down, but that doesn’t mean the danger is gone or the questions have answers. Everyone else might be fine with moving on, but not Merc.
Sydney has been waiting for Merc to return to finish the job he failed to complete eight years ago. A Company Kid. A girl that had been used and abused and was so lost inside of herself that nothing could drag her out from the darkness. Escaping this life is not something that is possible. Being saved is not an option. Sometimes someone’s soul is just too fractured, split too many times to ever be made whole again.
But one thing is certain. Merric Case is going to use every skill he has to get what he wants.
Sydney... I don’t even know where to begin. I think she is probably the most complex character that Julie has created to date. She pulled me in instantly. I trusted her. I felt sorry for her. I pitied her. But never did I fully trust her. She was cunning and far more than just the broken shell of a girl that gave up waiting on being saved. There is no doubt that she is broken. Syd is one helluva cracked egg. But there was so much to her. A whole book could have been written just on Syd alone and I still don’t think we’d know everything there was to know.
Merc. Just who is Merric Case? Is the punk kid who grew up on the streets of Boston? The brilliant mind recruited by the MITs of the world? The soldier? The assassin? A man that wants to protect the few people he loves? Maybe he’s none of these things or maybe he’s all of them. One thing is certain. He is not a nice guy. This is not a dark hero that is simply misunderstood or a little bit damaged. His hard edges aren’t going to be soften with a simple touch of a woman. This is a man that has a job to do – a job he’ll do at any cost. Man, woman or child. It does not matter. Merric Case might not make you swoon or go weak in the knees, but he is going to get you hot and bothered. He’s going to push you and your limits and he’s going to do so with force.
Merric has to get through to Sydney. She holds the answers to the questions that he needs. The things that can finally put everything to rest. Even as skilled as Merric breaking Sydney isn’t as easy as it seems. She is unexpected. Hard when he wants her soft... but he knows that there is more than one way to break a wild animal. I was a nervous wreck during most of this read. I knew that there was going to be zero answers to be had until the end came around, but that didn’t stop me from trying to. I looked so hard to find a glimmer of hope within Merc. And sure, we got to see a side of him that easily made him less scary – but that was a window into him that the reader got. Syd wasn’t that lucky. Syd had to function, she had to make choices. She had to decide to trust him. She had to decide if she was going to save herself or self-destruct. And in true JA Huss fashion... you have zero clues as to what is about to go down.
I didn’t think that I would fall as hard as I did for Merc. I mean he punches her in the face... like more than once. But that was the messed up part of it. Although I saw Sydney as all sorts of broken I also saw something in her that made her a worthy opponent. And I think that is what made the violent parts not matter. There is no question that this might be a bit too much for some readers. But I think for fans of Julie – this story gives you so much. More answers as to the company, more excitement over the next release (which is Sasha’s book) and although this is a stand-alone – it ties in to the R&R and DD&D series.
There is something that is just not human about the way this woman’s mind works. There is zero predictability. None. There is reason in everything. There are little things that tie it all together and I seriously think she tossed in a few things just to fuck with our heads. It worked. I was on the edge of my seat during this entire read. I was up till 4 AM reading it. I was awake two hours later thinking about it. I slept and I went right back to the story. Got lost all over again.
I can’t recommend this author’s books enough. If this is your first JA Huss book, and you love the story, writing and the characters, I can't stress how much you should go back to the start and read from there. Not every book is this dark. Merric did carry some redeeming qualities, not all are showcased here – but they are there. So if you read this and you want more. Get ready to get lost in this crazy world, because once you start there is no stopping.
This is a a stand-alone. If this is your first JA Huss book, and you find the theme of this story intriguing and want to know more about the "friends" Merc mentions and just what happened with the Company... you can, by reading the following. Although there are references to the past stories - it does not impact the reading of this story or Merc's story at all.

A Total Mystery, Right To The End!
I don't know exactly what I expected when I started this book, but this book was unlike anything I've read before! It was immediately intriguing and suspenseful. It kept me on the edge of my seat, from beginning to end.
If you're expecting a conventional romance Hero, you will be thrown for a loop. Merc/Case is anything but the cavalier, lady's man that so often graces the pages of romance novels. No, he is a cold, calculating killer that is ruthless in his pursuit of vengeance. When he full-on punches the heroine, Sydney, in her face during an early scene in the book, I knew that he was in a whole other league.
Sydney has spent years waiting for Case to come and claim her. Half hoping he'll rescue her from her pained existence, half knowing he will only return to kill her, she runs away the night before her wedding, trying to avoid bringing danger to her fiancé and his family. She ends up running into the very man she told herself she should be running from.
From the start, there is a lot of anger from Case, directed at Sydney, that I couldn't understand. He was cruel and sadistic. I couldn't understand what poor Sydney had ever done to him. After all, it was him who had left her behind to a life of captivity eight years earlier, not the other way around.
However, as more of Sydney's story was brought to light, it became clear that there is far more to Sydney than meets the eyes. Her life has been a never-ending series of torments and tragedies. She has been emotionally, physically and mentally broken. She has never had a chance to figure out who she is or to make her own decisions. She's been programmed for one thing alone from childhood on.
Despite the fact that I could not stand Case until over half way in, I absolutely could not put this book down. Usually, if I don't like one of the main characters it's a no-go for me, but Case was the perfect "love to hate him" character.
As the storyline progressed, and more pieces of the puzzle were revealed, his actions began to make more sense, inexcusable as they may be. Sydney's past and present become more convoluted, raising questions as to her intentions. Slowly, the two begin to form a bond as they try to put together the fragmented pieces of Sydney's mind in order to find her former captor.
Overall, I give this 4.5 stars. It was a unique and captivating story that kept me guessing from start to finish. There was plenty of suspense and mystery. It is a stand-alone and wraps up nicely, without any unresolved issues.

2.5 stars...
I honestly do not know where to begin with this review. First of all, I feel like I have read a very different book then everyone else!!! Second, I decided that I will not get much into the plot of the story as I would not want to give anything away. So, I will mainly stick to how I feel about the book in general.
I spent the majority of this book confused with what was going on. The story takes place with Merc; an assasin with a major hate on for a woman named Sydney Channing. His goal for the past eight years (after he failed to save her from an evil man's clutches..)is to destroy her and kill her. He feels if he does this he will be able to move on with his life. The setting of the book is in a cabin where he holds Sydney captive. The story line had so much potential, but there was just no depth to the characters. By the end of the book it felt like the last five percent of the story didn't jive with the rest of the book. Last but not least, any kind of relationship between the hero and heroine was just not believable to me at all. I will add that calling them; hero and heroine just sounds wrong!!!
I've probably already gave up way more than I had already planned on, as well as I find myself having trouble articulating my feelings about this book. It was just so out there for me. I honestly questioned my intelligence several times while I was reading. I wondered why the heck I wasn't able to figure out anything. I had zip emotional attachment with the characters either. The bond just didn't develop for me. I mainly think it was because I just couldn't grasp their motives or who they were as individuals.
It did make me sad that I couldn't get into this one, as I have read some of J.A. Huss's work before and enjoyed it. I was really looking forward to this one; but it just missed the mark for me in such a big way. I do wonder if I had of read the series where Merc was introduced, then maybe I would have felt more for him??
All in all, I am just going to chalk this book up to one that was far from an enjoyable read for me and move on. Seeing as there are a great deal of five star reviews, I would probably give it a shot if you are interested in it as a reader. I seem to be the minority here and would hate it if someone missed out on a book that they might enjoy! Time to move on...!!

5 "Be the rabbit" STARS
Call me crazy but I do seriously LOVE a good mindfuck! And Julie Huss is just the author to deliver on that. The warning alone had me so ready for this…

Ms. Huss did NOT exaggerate. If you can’t stand violence, vengeance, servitude, humiliation and chaos – both physical and mental, then go no further. This is not the book for you.
If all of the above still has you intrigued then buckle up, buttercup, you’re in for one helluva ride!
While this is a standalone, if you’ve read Slack: A Day in the Life of Ford Aston, Guns: The Spencer Book or the Dirty Dark Deadly Series, then you’d have met Merc (Merric Case), briefly, or heard his name mentioned in covert, deadly ways. Then you’ll also know that Merc is...
...a ruthless, lethal, assassin and one mofo you don’t want as your enemy.
“I am Merc and there are three things you should know about me. Number one. You might be bigger, but I will last longer. Number two. If you fuck me, I fuck everything you ever loved. And number three. I never lose. My victory is only delayed.”
Unfortunately for Sydney Channing, I won’t provide any details as to who she is…you’ll just have to read to find out :D, she just may be on the wrong side of things where Merc is concerned!

This was a very dark, disturbing read with layers of deception, mind control, torture and revenge.
But within all that darkness, this story is also about the strength of the human mind, body and spirit as well as the innate need and fragility of craving affection, human contact and love.
It all began… One night eight years ago, Two young girls: Company kids. One illegitimate/collateral damage and the other a target/loose end.
One mission, Two killers – a decision was made that night that would set in motion a diabolical plan for revenge….sealed with a promise? Or a threat?
Merc is an anti-hero, or perhaps he may not even be a hero at all. I was all over the place with him. I can’t say that I ever loved him but I did have my moments of warm emotion towards him and I don’t hate him. He’s a trained assassin. Formidable at his job and this is his last job and it’s personal.
Sydney is another complex character. She’s flawed and lethal in her own way and also so, broken…yet, not. I felt a lot for her.
“Take me there, Merc. Meet me there in the dark and I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”
“I want Merric Case to desire me so much, he chooses differently. I want him to change my life. I want him to take it back.”
I cried for her, rallied with her and even bitched at her. The most poignant and moving thing about this entire story, for me, was how a choice had been made on one fateful Christmas eve that took two innocent girls in completely different directions. For one, it meant the beginning of something new, exciting and ultimately, good. For the other, it meant unmentionable abuse and captivity.
I will say, for this read, you need your big girl panties and a strong stomach.
It was riveting, suspenseful and there were some tender moments. I loved this and am so stoked for Sasha’s story!!

This was a very dark, disturbing read with layers of deception, mind control, torture and revenge.
But within all that darkness, this story is also about the strength of the human mind, body and spirit as well as the innate need and fragility of craving affection, human contact and love.
It all began… One night eight years ago, Two young girls: Company kids. One illegitimate/collateral damage and the other a target/loose end.
One mission, Two killers – a decision was made that night that would set in motion a diabolical plan for revenge….sealed with a promise? Or a threat?
Merc is an anti-hero, or perhaps he may not even be a hero at all. I was all over the place with him. I can’t say that I ever loved him but I did have my moments of warm emotion towards him and I don’t hate him. He’s a trained assassin. Formidable at his job and this is his last job and it’s personal.
Sydney is another complex character. She’s flawed and lethal in her own way and also so, broken…yet, not. I felt a lot for her.
“Take me there, Merc. Meet me there in the dark and I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”
“I want Merric Case to desire me so much, he chooses differently. I want him to change my life. I want him to take it back.”
I cried for her, rallied with her and even bitched at her. The most poignant and moving thing about this entire story, for me, was how a choice had been made on one fateful Christmas eve that took two innocent girls in completely different directions. For one, it meant the beginning of something new, exciting and ultimately, good. For the other, it meant unmentionable abuse and captivity.
I will say, for this read, you need your big girl panties and a strong stomach.
It was riveting, suspenseful and there were some tender moments. I loved this and am so stoked for Sasha’s story!!

5 “Mind Gripping Suspense” Stars
Meet Me in the Dark.....you can read the title and see the cover and I think you are safe to think, this is a dark read and boy was it ever.
This was a book that the less you know, the better off you will be. I will say that for a lot of the book, I was placed in a state of perplexity, anger, sympathy, and confusion. But in all, it was a twisted and crazy roller coaster ride. The twists and turns and the lies and truths, kept you guessing and pondering for the entire read.
Sydney Channing was dynamic, complex, strong, sad, broken and maybe a little crazy. She was dealt with a bad hand in life. She was taken and then thought she was to be rescued but it didn't happen. For 8 years she was tortured and brainwashed. She did what she had to do to survive. There was a time when she thought she was going to be rescued. Merc Case, an assassin, soldier, cold blooded killer, a man who was a ruthless as they come, was suppose to rescue her. She begged Merc to help her; instead he told her that he would be back. So for 8 years she thought of the man who would one day rescue her and the time has finally come. But is this the rescue that she has imagined all these years or does Merc have another agenda? Sydney has answers that Merc needs and he will do whatever means he needs to do to get those answers......lie, hurt, torture, starve, brainwash, drug......nothing is off limits in the name of Revenge. But what kind of person has Sydney become in those years of captivity? Is she weak and broken or cunning and strong?
I will tell you that I loved Sydney. I rooted for her the whole time. Merc was mysterious, violent and cold hearted and I despised him. But I loved that I got both POVs. There was so much depth and past scars to the characters that getting insider their thoughts was key to this story.
So with what I have given you above- you must decide if you want to jump into the fire. It's a fire that pulls at you, makes you squirm at times, hope at times, it's gritty, it’s violent, it compelling, it's gut wrenching and most of all it's good ole mind f*ckery!! The author has a way of telling a story that keeps you on your toes the entire read. You think you have it figured out and bam she throws you a curve ball.
I have not read the other books that Merc was mentioned in. I felt that the author gave me enough information about the past to make me comfortable within the book. I have discovered that Julie Huss writes a dark story in the most extraordinary of ways. She loves to start your journey and take you down the darkest, most twisted and highly unexpected ride you can imagine. I will say that I do love her endings. Even in the dark, the light must come around and Julie always brings the light for me.

OMFG... MEET ME IN THE DARK was one hell of a roller coaster ride!!! This book was an intense, gritty, scintillating, raw, unpredictable, suspenseful dark read. I am constantly amazed of Julie's brilliant and wicked mind as she writes and weaves a story that's so complex that leaves you in awe and shock. If I could describe this book in one word it would be CONSUMING!!! I was consumed and wrapped into this dark and twisted book that it left me in a book hangover.
When JA first introduced us to the character Merc, from her previous books, I was so intrigued with this mysterious man. I wanted to know more of Ford's friend. And finally in Meet Me In The Dark, we get to learn about this mysterious killer, Merric Case aka Merc. And what a story it was.
In true JA Huss fashion, Julie never fails to deliver a suspenseful story full of twist and turns. Trust me this book is so unpredictable and dark. If you are looking for prince charming, knights in shining armor, hearts and flowers, then I will tell you this is not that type of book. The characters are flawed, broken, raw, and dark. The story is so gritty, violent, dark, and suspenseful that in all honesty you don't know whom to trust. And when you think you have things figured out, Julie throws you in a whirlwind and you are left gasping.
This book is one of those reads that you MUST READ. JA's writing and storytelling is impeccable and brilliant. She has an amazing ability to capture her readers attention to be fully invested into getting to know Merc and Sydney. This book will have you on the edge of your seats and you will not want to put this book down. All I got to say trust me you want to MEET MERC IN THE DARK.

Okayyyy
This is another book that you will either one star or five.
It's another book that is so extreme in its LE unfriendliness that I hated everything in it.
But, I couldn't put it down. The writing itself is great. I've loved this author's previous work.
It's Dark for sure.
We met our antihero Merc in previous books from the author. The Merc in this book is not what I expected from reading about him previously.
Merc was sent to rescue our little h (Sydney) from a cult like military group. The mission went bad. He punches her in the face and leaves her there after her father betrays Merc and his partner is killed.
Eight years later he comes back for her. Then proceeds to beat and torture and rape her. The POV goes back and forth between the two of them. When we are treated to his POV, he states over and over he intends to kill her after he gets the info from her he wants. There is chapter after chapter of brainwashing bullshit. This girl was an innocent victim, but he wants revenge from her? Then when we get to the end all the sudden he loves her. He then reverses everything he previously stated. Oh...he meant to save her all along. Then the final nail in the coffin...he pulls out his guitar and sings the song Daughters from John Mayer. John Mayer is the douchbag who kisses and tells about all the women he slept with ( Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Anniston to name a few). So he picks a song from one of the least genuine men out there. Telling our little beaten to shit h he will always take care of her. I call bullshit.
Now if you read this
Grizz is far worse a person than Merc. I hated everything that happened in that book too. But Grizz's love for Ginny was genuine. It was believable. It was the ONLY redeeming thing about Grizz. I gave it five stars.
The love Merc says he has for Sydney isn't believable to me. The author did not convince me of that.
The fact we were also promised Ford in this book and never saw him? Makes me want to give zero stars.
One star. It's getting one star for the writing was good and the fact I couldn't put it down. It lost four stars because Merc is a douchbag.

I've had this book on my tbr forever ... maybe all the build-up was too much ... maybe my expectations were too high.
Every other encounter with Merc has been a good one. This book just didn't blow me away like I was expecting. It was good. But the mind games got too be too much for me ... we went in so many circles, that I think I got completely lost & then, by the time I found my way back, I'd sort of given up caring.
I still need to read Wasted Lust. But I've been delaying because Sasha is one of my favorite female characters ever & I'm afraid of what might happen ... guess maybe I should just suck it up & stop delaying? rip the bandaid off, like I finally did with this one.

This book was CRAZY good...from the mind warped characters to the whole dark disturbing tale. J.A. Huss wove a tale of complete suspense and taboo intimacy that had me both disturbed and turned on!
This book is hard to summarize as the mystique, the suspense, and the drama is all wrapped up in the telling of the tale, so attempts to explain would just ruin the experience for any reader. This is the story of a young girl whose life has never been her own. As the offspring of bad company, the captive of secret assassins, the pawn in a game of revenge...Sydney has no idea who she is. She is a cowgirl running a local bar on the verge of starting a new life. She is a sad woman raised to survive by a cold hearted assassin, Garrett, whose affection was chilling. She is a scared lady on borrowed time from the one man who haunts her dreams yet she yearns for, Merc. WHAT?????
Get on board with this book and buckle in. Try to piece the fragments of the story together while keeping your sanity. Hang on as the the twists will have you reeling. Try to come to grips with the affection you will develop for a merciless killer. Enjoy the aha moments when it all comes together and finally there is light in the dark!

The best thing I can say about this book is that I was never bored and I never, not once considered DNFing, and for me lately, that's a major compliment. With so many books unable to hold my interest in recent weeks, this one succeeded at keeping it for the entire length of the book, even if I did find it a bit uneventful and repetitive in parts. I'm by no means a big JA Huss fan, and the only other book I've read by her is 3,2,1 (which I found problematic but tickled my curiosity enough to give this book a try). I'd read at the end of that book that Meet Me in the Dark would be very dark and I'm a sucker for dark reads. EDIT I also read TRAGIC which I hated!
So, no, not a JA Huss fangirl, in fact I've questioned some of her attitudes towards publishing and bad reviews in general. However, here I am stating my mind because that's what a bitch does in this free speech world we're living in. So having said that, this isn't a rant. I liked this book just OK. Did not by any means love it and the thriller aspect wasn't as intense as I hoped. However I think I understand why she's so popular. Her books are fast paced and don't seem dull or cliched. There's a certain freshness about them.
As for Meet Me in the Dark, I have to say that although I found it a decent read, I'm not sure it's best read as a standalone. I picked it up because I thought it could be read that way, but I was a bit confused through the majority of the book and the names being mentioned didn't contextualize the story better for me because I didn't know any of these people. I also read on the author's note at the end that this is a book that has been set up for a while now through other books and that Merc has appeared in plenty books before this one. I feel that had I read these previous books, I would have had a better idea of who Merc was and it would have been easier to slide into the story. I read on a different review that people who haven't read the Come series, will probably not get the full impact intended, so that may have come into play.
I'm not sure I ever truly warmed up or understood Merc for the reasons described above. There was verbal and physical abuse to the heroine in the beginning and borderline rape as well, so the subject matter is dark in a very uncomfortable way. However this book wasn't as sexy as I expected it to be and I'm not sure I felt a true connection being developed between Merc and Syd for the vast majority of the book. In fact I felt more of a love and connection between Merc and a secondary character by the name of Sasha. I even wondered if Sasha would end up being Merc's actual heroine in some super twisted ending.
As much as I love John Mayer's Daughters, it did come as a bit jarring. We have this ruthless, cold guy for about 90% of the book and all of a sudden he's playing sappy songs to the heroine. It rang just a teensy bit corny. Which is something I've realized about Huss's books. She tends to go for the cutesy ending that borders dangerously on the cheesy in an attempt at hitting the emotional heartstrings.
All in all, not what I expected but something tells me that for people who are big fans of this author and who are already familiar with the Come series and with this hero in particular, it will be a much more satisfying read. Also... do not freaking read this thing if you're sensitive to super dark themes, physical or verbal violence.

Wow! This book was amazing and scary and has completely messed me up! This is labeled as "dark" and I totally get why. Now normally I would bypass this type of book. I'm more into the alpha, hero, protector type books, but I've learned that if JA Huss has written it, I'm giving it a chance. The is a reason behind her madness. She has such a knack for writing damaged characters and making you fall hard for them. I did find out that she wrote this book to show readers what it was like for the woman that were forced into "The Company" (in previous books) and it just re-enforced how emotional it is when one of these women get saved.

Meet me in the Dark is Merc’s story. Up until now, we have only read glimpses into Merc’s mysterious and dark character. Merric "Merc" Chase is a loner freelance assassin. Merc is strong, broody and exudes sex appeal in spades.

Sydney Channing is the product of the Company, a powerful clandestine organization that uses females as pawns to further their purpose. Consequently, Sydney is alone, distrusting and yearning for one man to save her.
“When all my power is stripped away, I still have choices. Like choosing not to give a shit. That’s a very powerful choice when a person thinks she has no power.”
Eight years ago on Christmas Eve, Merc’s mission was to save Sydney; however, instead of saving her, he saved 12 year old Sasha Cherlin. That night, Merc warns Sydney that he will return for her when she least expects it. Well, that day finally comes.
The story of Merc and Sydney is filled with anger, distrust, revenge and longing. With chapters alternating between each character’s POV, it allows the reader to understand the complexity of Merc and Sydney’s reunion and the mutual darkness they share. The tension starts from the first page and continues to escalate until the very end. So, sit back and enjoy the journey.

For those who haven’t read previous books that included the characters of Merc or Sasha, you will not feel lost, as this book can be read as a standalone. However, the reading experience will be more enriched if you read Slack/Taut, Come, Come Back, Coming for You.

What a RIDE!!!
I'm going to keep this short and simple because truthfully I had a really hard time with this book.
It's been since morning that I try to figure out what didn't worked but I have no idea.
J.A. Huss books are usually one hell of a fucked story And Meet me in the dark was probably the worse.
Not in a bad way but as in one giant headache. I should have let myself go and read without asking too many questions but I'm not that kind of reader. I'm always thinking two step ahead instead of reading what's happening especially in books like these.
Meet me in the dark is a stand-alone but I can't imagine myself reading this book solo. I read Come, Come Back: Dirty, Dark, and Deadly #2 and Coming for You and I strongly recommend to read them first to have a better overview.
I would say that it's even imperative to read it of you plan on reading Wasted Lust like me.
And you have to read 3,2,1 too because Wasted Lust is a spin-off of that series.
The whole time I was reading about Merc and Sydney, I had so many questions. What is real? Who's telling the truth? What is the truth? Are we going to have an honest answer from either of them?

This twisted masterpiece of a tale is not for the faint of heart!!! This is a story that takes place so far into the dark, even our beleaguered heroine does not wish to come into the light for any reason. By the dark, I mean it takes place under cover of darkness on a national, geopolitical, familial, interpersonal level and within one's own person.
The motivation for all of this darkness is appropriate to each level. Why darkness nationally and geopolitically...power in pursuit of greed. Power that is above law let alone human decency or morality. Why darkness in familial dealings...what else but twisted values preying on the weak to carry out an agenda for power that supports an individual's need for prestige and greed.
Now, darkness in interpersonal relations takes on a whole new dynamic...the dynamic of torture for control over one's mind. The subject of this torture and mind control eventually fractures and parts of this person slip into blessed darkness.
What Ms. Huss creates for us here is dueling operators in the dark who have been tearing Sydney apart mentally. We are not quite sure ever of the extent of gamesmanship among these three characters. Garrett who has had Sydney since she was sixteen until he seemingly disappeared from her life and Merrick Case (Merc)or(Case) who has watched Sydney since he failed to rescue or kill? her eight years ago. Sydney herself has fought back with inner mental fortitude and kept parts of herself hidden...in the dark.
On the eve of her wedding to a seemingly normal guy, Brett, Sydney runs away because she is afraid that Case will come for her and kill her fiancee, Brett. Because he always has watched her, Case knew exactly when and where she left. He brutally kidnaps her and begins his own brand of torturous debriefing. My dear readers...this is some tough reading!!! The torture that Sydney is exposed to is meticulously detailed for us by the author. We are suddenly in the dark with these characters as we wish for something more between these two. Why would we wish this?
We wish for Case to be the man for whom Sydney hoped that would rescue her from the unrelenting torturous conditioning of Garrett. We feel as bereft as we identify with Sydney while Case is visiting further torture and punishment on this brave and hopeful girl/woman.
The author proceeds to take the reader on a deep dive into mind control in the detailed telling of the interactions between Case and Sydney. In this dark, dark place a fierce battle for the goodness inside Case and the real Sydney is being waged. The enemies are lies and half truths, suppositions and tiresome plans for killing. Yet...if you can, dear reader, hold on and I mean hold on tight, we begin to see the first glimpses of a dawn approaching. The light is where next they meet.
But before this happens, there needs be so many obstacles to overcome. Truths need to be illuminated and Sydney needs to free herself from the taint of her past and begin again. How she gets there will blow your reader's mind away along with a character's head or two. Case needs to admit that he made a mistake and the Sydney he really knows is a far cry from the one he presumed to know. He needs to discover where she belongs and if he can, "'...Go do something genuine.'”
For those of us who like it twisted and dark with a crazy AF HEA, Ms. Huss does not disappoint. This one is gritty, grimy, shut your eyes but can't help peeking hot read. Even if we know better than to like it and are mad at ourselves for thinking this is so mesmerizingly hot.

Unfortunately this just didn't work out that well for me. This book was just okay, I didn't love it and I didn't hate it either. The writing wasn’t bad and the story was fast-paced. However, several tiny/major issues (depending on how you see it) made me feel completely indifferent about this book. I respect all opinions but honestly, I cannot figure out how this book brought in so many high ratings.
Mindfuck is the best word to describe this book. It was intense, brutal, and completely demented. But, I didn’t enjoy the storyline. I didn’t feel the connection between Merc and Sydney. I’d like to know more on Sydney’s abuse by Garrett and more details of her brainwashing in order to be able to understand her fears, her insecurities and her illusions. I think her characterization wasn’t well done and I could not sympathize with her. Merc was a mysterious anti-hero and I liked him more than Syd, but again I’d like to read more about his background.
The story was about the most screwed up relationship ever, not that it's romantic by any means. I still don’t get it how love grew between those two despite captivity, brainwashing, violence, sex abuse, trust issues. I was also confused with the concept of owning her after that incident eight years ago that marked their lives.
Finally, I know this will sound weird but I have the feeling that this book would do a good dark suspense movie, but unfortunately the book quite disappointed me. If you're just looking for crazy though, I'd give this one a go!

When I found out Huss was going to write a dark story about Merc, no less. I thought the Book Gods had shined down me. Dreams do come true.
Meet Me In The Dark is a standalone, but Huss likes to incorporate some hot sauce with her chicken, we always get little side dishes of the other characters from previous books. That's how I first met Merc, you know when you first meet someone and you just know. That was me and Merc. True dark love. It couldn't be denied.
"I like the taste of blood, Syd. Haven’t you figured that out yet? You don’t call yourself a killer and not like the taste of blood . It turns me on, bitch. Now beg for it."
If you've ever read the Boss, well, then you know the book is gonna be twisted, you know, everything is something, nothing is everything. Merc lived up to my expectations. Sydney was more than I expected. And the damn story twisted my mind. I'm thinking this girl had to do something to my Merc, why does he hate her? Then I'm thinking, she's out of her ever loving mind. And then I'm like, fuck it, let's see what's going on here. I did not stop until I read every last word.
Sydney Helena Channing. Company kid. Use her, abuse her, and she always comes back for more."
I'm labeling this dark chocolate with some colorful sprinkles. The readers that love the love will love this. The readers that crave the dark will appreciate this. My only problem, why can't the love of my life at least get two books, I mean, I thought you really wrote this for me, Huss?
Another Hit from The Boss. I'm excited to see if she liked to dabble in the dark and if she will make my motherfucking day, again.

4.5 I want you to save me stars
Wow. Talk about a TOTAL mind-fuck. I literally had NO idea what was going on for the first like 50% of the book! But I gotta say, it worked with a book like this. You find yourself as "in the dark" as Sydney and Merc are. It totally added to the twisted feel of the book!
This is my first book by J.A. Huss, and it certainly won't be my last!
I would TOTALLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an amazing read in which you are questioning your sanity right along with the characters! Pretty much, prepare to be completely and utterly MIND-FUCKED the entire time.

3 “Ok, what the f*ck did I just read?!” stars
I honestly don’t know!
Can I say I’m not sure I didn’t totally like it or that I liked just the parts of it but not really sure which ones…
Hell, I’m not thinking straight…
And my head is spinning…
This was the most messed up read I’ve had the chance to encounter after I read Break Her(and that was such a f*cked up story I actually had nightmares for days after I’ve read it)
I really wanted to like this, cause I really liked James Fenici in the Dirty series ComeCome BackComing for You where I first invisioned Merc…and was honestly intrigued by the mysterious and broody assassin…
But unfortunately all I got from him in his book is a
A psychopath.
A cold, emotionless, empty shell of a man whose only goal in life is to kill this girl and the man who trained her, so I can set my world straight again.
And I kinda expected more…and at first after these words…

I was like…wooohooo, this sounds so good…
But then the shit started piling up and I got lost in the endless mind f*ck game between Merc and Sidney.
“I know what you’re looking for. I know where Garrett is. But it’s locked up in that place I keep all my secrets. The dark place. Take me there, Merc. Meet me there in the dark and I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”
“I’m gonna reprogram you. Take you down into that dark place you love so much and turn the fucking lights on.”
And then I’m like
I’m totally thrown back by the mind turmoils that I really never developed any connection to either of them…I had a feeling I was constantly pushed back into this mind arena and I couldn’t grip on anything…past, present, future I was whiplashed by the events that happened but actually didn’t, or I thought that they had but they actually didn’t or did and I never picked up the trail…
Jesus, and as much as I tried I couldn’t not justify Merc’s actions in the process of interogating Sidney. After that I couldn’t make myself believe that his later actions and emotions were genuine or even real for that matter.
And Sidney, OMG, I just felt sorry for the girl. I wanted to reach out to her and give her a gun so she can put herself out of the misery.
Sydney Helena Channing. Company kid. Use her, abuse her, and she always comes back for more. If the girl has a motto, that’s it.
Never had I wanted to scream and fight more for the female character than I wanted to do for Sidney…and I just hated them all who f*cked this girl’s life for good and beyond repair…how can there be any “normal” for her…and what is she just suppose to forget everything and just…I don’t know…let go, I guess…and that exactly what she did…
So, yeah, I didn’t believe it, any of it…it just seemed to stretched and too unworthy…
Anyway, those two…
“You’re a sick bitch.”
“Says one psycho to the next.”
And I just keep reading the words from the author over and over again:
Merc and Sydney are messed up by themselves, but they are complete when they are together. I guess that’s my aim when I write. Take two fucked up people and make them better once they fall in love. :)

Or even better, Merc’s words are just lingering in my mind:

A riveting, twisted intense read, I didn't find this dark at all but I am a sick puppy so that may explain that!!
This is my very first book I've read by this author, I enjoyed the story line, the intensity of the story, putting pieces of the puzzle together chapter by chapter..raw, gritty and so fucked up!!

‘He’s the man who shows up when no one else will. He is the man who looks death in the eye and laughs. He is the man who will pull that trigger when the whole world stands in shock, unable to move.’
First of all we have to say that this ride we’re on with JA Huss has been and still is an amazing twisted roller-coaster ride. We don’t want to get off, rather we want more! Once again this Author has written something so intriguing, so warped and this time incredibly dark and gritty with powerful moments of sheer emotional intensity.
Though we have to say we’re still feeling in the dark in some respects and even though we met Sydney and Merc there…pun intended…we’re still a tad confused. At least though, as far as Merc is concerned, we think he too is struggling to understand the base reason/s behind the identities and the double crossings of some key players.
“Words can be poems, or songs, or gifts. Words can also be threats, lies, and broken promises. You should learn the difference.”
We have to offer our opinion on this story being tagged as standalone. In our humble opinion we do not believe that you will get the full enjoyment and understanding unless you’ve read the Dirty, Dark and Deadly series; even The Rook & Ronin series with the spin offs too for that matter. We feel that having read those added to the intrigue and understanding and definitely added more to the full impact of Meet Me in the Dark. Like we said, we still felt slightly confused at times and had to re-read a few scenes, yet knowing these characters and those mentioned beforehand added to the power of this story both emotionally and informatively. We had already made that important character connection and knew of where various characters have been and what they’ve seen, experienced and been through.

This story is so much more than just a story of torture, captivity and revenge. Through JA Huss’ flawless writing and ingenuity we experience a thrilling suspense and a story that has you constantly questioning and double guessing just who you can trust and what the hell the truth is behind every word or action. Once again we got some aaaha moments but yet again new lines of questioning opened which we are desperate to have answered. This is not a Miss Marple mystery; this is a fucked up JA Huss mystery and we NEED TO KNOW!!!!!
‘What does that say about me that a monster can’t love me? I’m so unlovable even evil men can’t stand to be with me.’
So darling Sydney, well, we felt so incredibly sorry for her one minute – like proper emotional despair and anguish. Then the next minute we’re like…hmmmm hang on there for a minute. Is this for real? Is she actually……Brilliant mind-fuck!
‘Do I believe in right and wrong? Sure. As long as we understand I’m always right.’
Now Merc – he’s intrigued us for a long while now and to get into his head was brilliant. Though we discovered a lot, he’s still a bit of a closed book and a master of mind fuckery. At times he gave us whiplash and what we felt was a sudden character change felt a bit strange and unexplained. We definitely don’t think we got a complete grip on him but what we did get we loved. Bit of a bloody cock though!

So; YES we enjoyed Meet Me in the Dark – YES we are desperate for more and YES we HIGHLY recommend every book the came before this one by JA Huss and now can’t wait for the next one!

This is a masterpiece of deception, as with any dark tragedy you are taken down a path of horror and pain through the lives of Merc Case and poor Sydney Channing. The book read more like a CSI, Homeland spie novel to me. And I love every minute of it. This is a story about loss, betrayal and deception. Some could say the backdrop of that story is a love story, but for me it was about loving and accepting yourself and how we create methods to cope during stressful times. There were several intense parts. I don't want to say anything to give up the details because that is what makes the experience fun. Overall, it was one of the most original themes, plots and characters I have ever read. J.A. Huss continues to floor me with her writing abilities. This book will touch you in many ways. It will bring up many themes and leave you with questions but doesn't that happen with most great reads? Buy this book and enjoy the ride.

J A Huss never fails to write an intricate story with unique characters and lots of character depth.
At first, yes I was a bit surprised with our hero in Meet Me in the Dark, his first encounter with the heroine involves him punching her in the face. He's pretty mean and violent towards her for the first half of the book, it made me wonder how on earth they were going to fall in love. Or even if they were.
I enjoyed both the storyline, the characters and the new take on a 'captive romance'. The romance and sex lacked a little for me, but more than made up for it with everything else.

**Merc’s story is closely related to Sasha’s storyline (introduced in Ford’s book and then carried over into James’s book) If you read this without reading those first, you will more than likely feel lost. (You could probably skip Ford’s, but need info from the previous book) **I’ll add a link to a summary of all the books at the end.**
I’m a fan of this series; not a superfan, but have liked each book until this one. I had several issues with it, but none of those were the content. I’m comfortable with dark/abusive/captivity concepts, so before I get to spoilery stuff… I’ll just say that if dub/non-con, abuse, torture are a limit for you, then I’d skip because IMO, this one is much darker than the previous books. I am going to provide spoilers, so fans of the series with some trigger limitations can continue on to Sasha’s book. There’s honestly not very much info you’ll need for her book. So, if you want to read this book, STOP here. SPOILERS

My poor head hurts! So many twists and turns I stopped trying to figure out who controlled who and why and just enjoyed the story. Afterall, it would all be revealed in the end.
J.A. really knows how to do dark twisted love. Even Killers and Pawns need love too. Sometimes they just don't know it.
My heart bled for Sydney and all she suffered. Her body was one thing, but her mind?? How they hell could you ever recover or know truth again?? I guess just like anything you have to decide then choose to believe, bite the bullet or forever live a paranoid life of your own mind.
I really really enjoyed this story and her EOBS always has me nodding my head. Sasha up next :)

Wow, just wow! Meet Me in the Dark is one of those books that I WISH I could go back and read again with fresh eyes not knowing what happens. Even though I pretty much felt this way about all of the books in this series (especially Ford and Spencer), this one, in particular, really got to me. It is dark – darker than dark at times – and it has some uncomfortable situations that perhaps not everyone will love, but that are so pertinent to the story as a whole there is no way it would be complete without. FINALLY, we have a book about the deliciously bad and brooding Merric Case, or Merc, who first burst onto the scene and stole the breath from my lungs in Ford’s novella, Slack. I have been waiting for over a year for this one because there was so much mystery shrouded around this character. He always seemed to be there in the background somewhere, doing something illegal no doubt, but the way in which Julie wrote his character left me wanting so much more. I now have answers to all of my questions and, even though it was no easy feat, I have absolutely fallen in love with our beautiful assassin, Merc. Who knew the hard fuck could be just as sweet as the soft one! This book has a little bit of everything in it. It is rough, it is disturbing, it is shocking as all hell and, at times, it is frustrating, but the feelings that it invokes are myriad and THAT is what makes it a truly fabulous book.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dark romance with so many twists, turns and mindfucks that it makes your head spin.
I need more Merc, I need more Ford, Spencer, Ronin, James – you name any H in this series and I. Just. Need. More.

I hate rating books so low, but I always try to be honest...
I LOVE Dark books and the synopsis sounded absolutely amazing. Sadly, I was left feeling disappointed!
I haven't read anything by this author before so I'm not sure if this is their usual writing style, but I found it really hard to connect to the story or the characters.
My difficulty connecting to the characters also made it impossible for me to believe in their love.
The ending was really great. I loved seeing such a vulnerable side to Case, but the problem was that it just didn't fit the rest of the story. It felt like I was reading about another couple. So even the part I enjoyed the most sadly couldn't make me rate the book any higher.

Dark is only the beginning when it comes to Meet me in the Dark! Merc is even more twisted that I thought he was, and Sydney is so confused, broken and out of it she amazed me when she was able to show me she truly did have a backbone after all.
