What breaks the pattern might build the pathAniI wanted to escape the pressure of fame, but abduction isn’t what I had in mind. Is this what I get for being terminally online? I suppose a planet with no technology really is a cosmic joke.
Except I’m not laughing.
It’s dangerous here, or so this giant feathered freak claims, but who's the enemy? Why is he helping me? I can’t figure out his agenda, but if life has taught me one thing it’s that everyone always wants something.
Always.
Szhe’kaThey took my wings. They took my sky.
Then they sent her falling into my world like a star I could never deserve.
Finding her has left me tangled in both promise and doubt. I was told she would imprint on me. No one said I’d be the one enthralled.
It doesn’t matter, though. A female would never accept such a broken male.
My favorite author <3 All books in this series are very interesting because they're so different. The characters are complex and not all of them are likeable from the start. You learn to love them all the more for the hurdles they have to overcome, though. That was especially the case with Ani, who was quite unlikable at the beginning, but the more you learned about her, the more you understood her and rooted for her. Szhe'ka was a sweetheart from the beginning to the end. His story is one of the most tragic ones of all the MMCs in this series, and you really feel his pain. I loved the glimpses into the way his people live - every species in this series is unique and really well fleshed out, with different culture and habits and behavior that stems from them. I can't wait for the next book, I love how the overarching plot progresses.
Actress Ani has a mask for every situation, but when her ex sells her to aliens, her usual approach clearly won’t work. She is abandoned in a metal box up high in a tree on a planet for hunting sentient creatures with no way to escape safely. When the strange, and awkward Szhe’ka approaches her and claims to be there to help her, Ani is guarded. She knows better than to trust anyone. But as the two work together to elude hunters and find the other humans, Ani realizes that to truly survive she needs to do two things she’s never been able to do: be herself and be vulnerable.
Ani is a complicated character with a darker background due to the abuse she’s experienced at the hands of her mother and the Hollywood business scene. She knows in her bones that you are always in competition and people are always using you. She is so used to protecting herself by pretending to be different facets of herself, that she has no idea who she truly is at her core. Her cynicism and distrust hampers her ability to initially make good judgement calls as she awakens on the hunting planet. Her slow realization that her usual techniques are no good and she truly needs to determine who she is as a person creates a beautiful character arc of personal growth.
Szhe’ka is an excellent foil and romantic interest for Ani. His wings have been butchered and he quickly has to learn how to cope with walking and climbing on limbs not well suited for the task. Furthermore, he is not a predator and he is not naturally violent. Instead he is incredibly earnest, and he takes on the mission to save Ani as his main motivation to keep living on the dangerous planet rather than giving up and dying. Szhe’ka struggles with his own perceived weakness as well as finding purpose now that he no longer can fly.
Both characters’ struggles with identity and finding meaning in life nicely dovetail together as they address the dangers facing them. The main language of Szhe’ka’s people is largely colored by emotion rather than words, which adds some interesting dynamics in the communication between the two as Ani is forced to be more open about her emotional state than she would like to be.
A poignant addition with lots of psychological brooding that continues an already stellar series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
She was kidnapped from Earth and experimented on by aliens.
He was kidnapped by aliens after they attacked his home. They cut off his wings. He can't fly anymore.
Hunter aliens are trying to hunt them.
They grow to love each other. I really liked the story and could not put it down.
There were some heavy topics in this story but the happy ending was well deserved.
SPOILERS. . . .. . . . . .
He was planning to die after his wings were cut off but she needed rescuing so he decided to help her instead of giving up.
She had a very traumatic past. Her mother was evil. She was raped as a child. Having suffered so much, I thought it was heart warming to see her learn to trust the hero.
He was so sad about the loss of the sky. He thought he could never mate or have a family. She told him she loved him and he truly felt it.
At the end, they come up with the idea to make him prosthetic wings so he can fly again. They just need to find some hunters with the technology they need to make the wings.
This is book 6 in the series. The author tells you everything you need to know. Previous couples from earlier books make an appearance so it was nice to see them.
This is book 6 in the series and the author raised the ban higher than ever. The plot is rich and immersive with all the talent of Kyla Breene. Unique and imaginative characters with flaws and real struggles. Rich world building that kept me in a top engagement until the last word. Even if you missed books in the series the author tells you everything you need to know. Love to see characters from earlier books make an appearance and how,in their own way, support Ani and Szhe'ka. *Ani the fmc is a human, former porn star *Szhe'ka the mmc,is a male kind of avian,a gentle giant *mental rep, panic atacs and ADHD *Trauma due to loss of limbs *abduction *mutations
Well, Ruby becomes something that will need your imagination. I love the creativity of this author. I enjoyed the story and it makes me curious for the next one.
